There is some encouraging news on the full civil rights out of Maine today! The Pan Atlantic SMS Group has released a poll on the ballot issues for this fall in Maine. The voter veto issue question 1 (which if passed would overturn Maine’s landmark marriage equality law) is beginning to look like it will not pass.

The polling found that 51.8% of self described likely voters would be voting No on 1! 42.9% would be voting Yes on 1 and 5.2 % were undecided. This is good news, but it is not time to start letting up on our efforts just yet. The margin of error on this poll is 4.9% so if the undecided voters all break for Yes, and the poll is off on by the whole margin of error then this question could still pass, if just barely.

This vote in Maine is a critically important one in terms of full civil rights for gay citizens. There have been almost no state wide votes were the voters have rejected the institutionalization of intolerance. This is our best opportunity to show that when given the facts, when given the choice and when not overwhelmed by out of state money and organizations the people of this nation will vote to allow their fellow citizens to have the same rights and responsibilities they enjoy.

There are only 20 days until Election Day for us to make sure this is the turning point in this fight. The forces of intolerance will not rest. They have seen these same kinds of numbers and are putting out Code Red e-mail blasts calling for donations and volunteers. They will generate some of each as those who have some unreasonable dread of their fellow citizen’s sexuality act out of fear and ignorance to try to deny civil rights passed by the legislature of Maine.

You can help make sure this does not happen. What will it take to win? Well for a start we have to get all of those self-identified likely voters to the polls.

Early voting has already been going on in Maine for a week. What is needed is for the No on 1 campaign to get in touch with everyone who will vote to defeat this question and make sure they vote! You can help by signing up for a shift or two making phone calls to voters who have been identified as being willing to vote no on this question.

This week there are two shifts left. Thursday night from 6:30 to 8:30pm EST and Sunday from 4 to 6pm EST. Making the calls is fun and easy! No on 1 provides you training, a list of calls to make, and a script. All you have to do is dial for voters! Most of the time you are going to get the folks on the phone and they are going to tell you they are behind this 100%! Remember you are calling people who have already been identified as No voters so you are talking to the choir here.

So, will you help? Will you take a little time out of your busy life to be able to stick it to those who would discriminate against people merely because of who they love? Will you stand up for the gay families in Maine and nation wide? I just knew you would! Click on this link, it will take you to the web-page where you can sign up for the shift (or two!) that works best for you.

It is not often you can make a real difference in politics by a couple of hours of action. This is most definitely one of those times. So don’t wait! Sign up now!

The floor is yours.
