From the “Holy Crap Republicans Are Insane” file we get this little nugget from Minnesota. If you had to guess what the biggest issue facing this nation in this generation is what would you say? Terrorism? Maybe. Global Climate Change? Probably. Lack of fresh water world wide? As a long shot sure. But you would be all wrong if you guessed any of those.
No, according to this Republican running for to against Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN First District) the biggest danger facing the nation is, Democrats. Allen Quist is a Republican from Minnesota who says:
“Our country is being destroyed. Every generation has had to fight the fight for freedom… Terrorism? Yes. That’s not the big battle,” he said. “The big battle is in D.C. with the radicals. They aren’t liberals. They are radicals. Obama, Pelosi, Walz: They’re not liberals, they’re radicals. They are destroying our country.”
If you would like to see the whole video you veiw it below. A word of warning though it is likely to make you want to bang your head against the keyboard, repeatedly.
Mr. Quist is not just any crazed Republican. He was a State Representative in Minnesota and ran for Governor there twice. He is obviously taking a page from Rep. Bachmann’s play book and running right to the edge of the Crazy Zone . Does anybody know what they are putting in the Republican drinking water in Minnesota?
As funny as it is on one level, on another it is scary. When it becomes okay to not just compare Democratic leaders (including the President) to terrorists but elevate the threat from them above that of real killers of Americans there is something really wrong with the Republican Party.
Just when I think they can not or will not go any lower, they get the keys to the secret subbasement out.
The floor is yours.

Perhaps Quist is projecting and the biggest threat is himself?
Well, from our point of view, that is probably true…
This is getting to be something of a theme with Republicans–Quist is not the first to say something like this. State legislators Sally Kern (Oklahoma) and Buttars (Utah) each declared that gay people are the biggest threat America faces, bigger than terrorism: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/13/16519/6829/939/476044 http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705285940,00.html
My guess is that other Republicans have made similarly idiotic statements. These are foolish, foolish people who are making clear they have no business being involved in governing. If Pete Hoekstra, Peter King, and Jim DeMint were genuinely concerned about politicians who downplay the threat of terrorism, they’d do something about these imbeciles in their own party. It makes me angry to think about the enormous cluelessness and bigotry (for Buttars and Kern) rooted in these comments. Yet another reminder that the Republican party is not to be taken seriously.
He is correct. Note that he does not use the terms “socialist” or “far leftist” which would legitimate the contention of the piece as some lame right wing lashing out at the liberal lefties again. But he does not go there.
It is radical to meld government and big business into too big to fail enterprises that get bailed out by the government with tax dollars while taxpayers fall further and further behind. That is what the government of the so-called “people’s party” is doing right now, with no help from the “corporate party.”
To my mind, the hijacking of democracy in this corporate coup is more dangerous to the US than being subject to more asymmetrical attacks, attacks which are largely in retaliation to our conduct in the regions involved.
Do the math, 3K dead in 9/11, a few hundred in Cole and embassy bombings and subway bombings, versus tens of thousands dead through lack of access to health care, what’s more dangerous to Americans, corporate government that kills us at home by denying us the basics of survival because it is not profitable, or corporate government that makes us a target for others to kill at home?
If the US ceases to fund Israeli war crimes against Palestinians and ceases to support brutal dictators (think Mubarak and Musharraf) in the region, then the political legitimacy would be sucked away from islamic militants. But these drone attacks on civilian targets will engender more attacks on the US from people we’ve screwed over directly. The GOP would never speak this but we’ve got to when they make these comparisons.
So many of you are following the bouncing ball, allowing power to direct your attention to a desiginated safe spot, buying and legitimating the terror narrative of power instead of thinking this stuff through on your own.
Go, doggie, fetch that bone! Good doggie! Now again!
The GOP needs to keep the crazy going they need like serial killers do to talk themselves into violence against us.
You own me big time, Bill. THanks to you, I watched the entire video.
And this is what I learned:
The radicals in Washington are destroying our country.
They are taking away our freedoms.
They are destroying the American Dream.
Gover Norquist has one of the most respected web sites in the U.S.
Single women vote for Democrats; married woman vote Republican.
And Mr. Quist is working day and night to defeat the health care reform bill because there is a “marriage penalty” clause in there — which Mr. Quist believes justifies scrapping the whole thing. (Even though the bill is not yet in final form.)
There. I have saved the rest of you from having to endure watching Mr. Quist in action (and I use the term loosely). Some day you’ll thank me for this.
Why? I don’t bang my head when I hear Dems make the same claims.
