Take a quick little quiz; before you read the rest of this, jot down as many names of Supreme Court Justices as you can. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Done? How many did you get? Three? Five? All nine? Well if those were the numbers you are doing better than 2/3 of your fellow countrymen who could only name one. That’s right nine of the most important people in the nation in terms of impact on our lives, and most citizens can’t name more than one.
Findlaw.com has released a poll asking folks to name the Supreme Court Justices. Most could only name a single Justice. Even the newest Justice Sonia Sotomayor who was confirmed just last year was only named by 15% of those surveyed!
This is a real problem, even though as FindLaw notes the Justices rule collectively if people don’t understand who is on the High Court and why that makes a difference in how rulings are decided it is nearly impossible to get them to care about it. While President Obama will have at least another two years in the White House and the chance, perhaps, to name one or two more Justices if Republicans manage to recapture the Senate (not very likely but not completely impossible at this point) then who is confirmed to a lifetime appointment will be radically changed. We have already seen the damage that conservative justices can do with the appointment of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. We are also in the position of having to live with less than liberal Justices because of the White Houses weak-kneed concerns about confirmation. What would we get if they had to get past a Republican controlled Senate?
It has long been a frustration of mine that the people of this nation know so little about their government and how it functions, but this really takes the cake! If you don’t even know who is saying that a law is or isn’t constitutional, how in the world can you have a valid opinion about the job they are doing?
By the way, only 1% of those surveyed were able to name all nine. Think about that for a second.
This kind of stuff makes me weep for the future of our nation.
Oh, if you want to check your answers the Justices of the High Court are Roberts (CJ), Scalia, Alito, Thomas, Sotomayor, Kennedy, Breyer, Stevens and Ginsburg.
The floor is yours

So? How did you do on your quiz? It took me a minute to get the last couple but I could name all 9. That puts me in the 1% category of all Americans. Sad, just sad.
One point deduction – it’s Breyer. Breyers is the ice cream.
Hey I knew the name! I just suck at spelling! Thanks!
Bill, if you can still get in to do it, you might want to correct the spelling in your headline – Supreme, rather than Superme.
Btw, of course I got all nine – but then I’m a recovering lawyer and a firedog. The latter obviously more significant, since if all lawyers got them all right, surely the percentage would be above 1%.
Thanks! I thought I spell checked that!
Yeah, it is shocking that even attorney’s can’t name them all. It a flat shame.
Well, I consider myself ‘informed but only got 7; missed Breyer and Ginsburg.
I’d love to see the terms for Scotus judges changed from lifetime to 20 years; given the length of life now as compared to when the Constitution was written.
AND “No mechanism presently exists for removing a Justice who is permanently incapacitated by illness or injury, both unable to resign and unable to resume service.[82]”
And the latest idiocy by them: “Court: Suspects must say they want to be silent”
At least Sotomayor commented on the lack of logic.
Yeah, I am with you on the change in terms of term. Though I think 25 years is better. Still there has to be an end point.
I missed Breyer too. So forgettable, I guess…
Without wracking my brain too hard I managed all but Kennedy and Breyer (mmm… ice cream).
Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and Scalia were easy, aka the “Four Assholes of the Apocalypse.”
The only good thing, IMHO, about this opinion is that Sotomayor not only sided with the “liberals” on the court, but wrote the opinion, using words like “unfortunate” and “turned upside down.” (see my comments on this decision at Attackerman.)
I forgot the Breyers too.
Always like to read this to put the court in perspective:

Alan lays it on.
I am going to invoke my right to remain silent even if I have to say so out loud.
No wonder these idiots keep electing clowns like Bush and Obama!
And now for a super-test!
For each Justice, how many of his or her predecessors in the same seat can you name?
For example, for Sotomayor the list goes backward through David Souter, William Brennan, and then…
Who?
Don’t tell me you forgot Sherman “Shay” Minton, that very liberal senator who morphed into a surprisingly conservative Justice!
And for extra credit…
Why are there eleven “seats” on the Supreme Court, but only nine Justices?
