Saving one animal will not change the world but it will change the world for that animal.
Namaste.
With the exception of hairballs and Bapu poopin’ on the floor Chez Tigre has been a dull place this week. I watched My Neighbor Totoro yesterday. Forest spirits. What a cute film.

Afternoon,
pupsFirecats.Hmmm…
Caturday!
I just love love love the hugging kittens – and the video of the napping kitten cracks me right up.
Isn’t this crew the Firecats? ;)
Ya know, I’ve thought of various things but nothing sounded right. Mebbe it’s just me.
Love the pics and the kitties…thanks for your work.
Best Friends Furever. Great pics this week.
They remind me of Gabby and Shiimsa. Two peas in a pod.
x2.
I have a friend on FB who works on animal rights issues, and her posts are sometimes soooo freaking intense. What hoomans do with/to animals is often a horror for the animals.
Otherwise, a quiet week here. I am going to have to take Mr. S for some mouth surgery when I catch him next. He has tissue growth in his mouth associated with his stomatitis that will have to be cut out. It is not infected and bloody, but it is inflamed, and it is going to strangle him, I am afraid. So I am trying to figure out how I am going to catch him, a pretty daunting task.
The two in the picture spread bit in the hips as they aged. Heehee. Sweet kittehs.
ooo, boy.
Poor Mr. S.
I worked a little bit at an animal-centered non profit, and I recall doing some research that included looking at sites with info on vivisection. I am permanently scarred from it.
Lottsa treats.
Saw this Tiger Sanctuary story and thought of Caturday.
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/06/08/india-approves-four-new-tiger-sanctuaries/
Oh, yeah, I saw that. Maintaining them properly is another story, sadly.
Hiya, Caturdenizens, firecats, whatever we are! Love the pics…Best Friends maybe my fave. I’m reserving the linked ones for later…as usual, I slept too late and am running behind. Got laundry in, getting ready to run to the library (returns due) and the last minutes of the sunday farmers market.
I took Friday afternoon off to take Smoodgie to the vet…she was hanging around at the time I called in. When I went out to get her…you know the rest. Despite several searches and calling her name, she didn’t turn up until evening.
Same story yesterday. She’s pretty obviously uncomfortable or in pain now. Hanging out at a distance from the patio, when she’s in this yard at all, so I have to go look for her. Since I was late with breakfast, neither she nor Big Boy was here when I got up, but BB turned up shortly. Haven’t seen Smoodgie yet.
Last night I brought her to the patio to eat..yes, picked her up and carried her, holding her feet firmly–she struggled a couple times and then gave in…because she wasn’t coming on her own. Then put her on my lap to pet. She definitely likes that…I could feel the purring, and she dozed off. Sadly, I had to put her back down so I could go in and use the bathroom, after quite a long pet. Poor baby.
But she still won’t come in thehouse, darn it.
Good afternoon firecats. Nothing much new here. Kuroneko has added a wrinkle to the attack the foot game. After a few minutes of attacking one foot and me wrestling with her, she’ll roll over and pretend to ignore me but as soon as I drop my guard, she pounces on the other foot. Clever but vicious kitty!
Totally agree. Sadly, one reason that a sanctuary would be established is for tourism. Still, I can’t help but be glad that the issue is on the radar of the PTB in Inda.
So sorry, that is heartbreaking.
You’re such a good mom….I hope she lets you find her and get to the vet if for nothing other than help with the pain….Good luck.
x2. ((Smoodgie)).
Not sure I’m so good. If I were, I’d have gotten her to the vet before now. Still, I’m trying.
I did read up on feline facial tumors, and it seems there are some that might not be malignant. So that made me want to get her in and see if something could be done, rather than just wait for her to fade away.
And, I’d better be moving along. Time to switch the laundry to the dryer, (and check whether Smoodgie has turned up)
Abner has been saving up his antics, I fear. It’s been strangely quiet here.
Heh. Looking over your shoulder, are you?
Peggy–”clever but vicious kitty.” Funny. They appeal to our masochistic side sometimes, I guess.
Now, outta here, for realz!
I’d be a fool not to…

‘Neko was just trying to bury her left over breakfast on the kitchen counter but obviously there’s nothing up there to bury it in. She’ll dig at the counter for a bit and then look at her food. Since it’s not buried, she’ll try again. Sometimes she spends several minutes up there, futilely attempting to bury her food. Just now, I came up behind her a put a paper towel over it. She turned around, sniffed the paper towel, gave me an incredibly smug look and jumped down. Sometimes clever, sometimes silly, always entertaining.
All cat, that Neko. Can’t imagine why you don’t have dirt on your kitchen counter for her special digging and burying requirements.
Here’s a “go figure” moment for you. My house tiger goes nuts over cream but has no interest in milk (even whole milk) – Right now she’s checking her eyelids for pinholes. Odd behavior that one has.
Making some sourdough bread today. Made the starter last week and working getting the loaf to rise today. Its been over 24 hours and the loaf is now just about double in size. Wonder if its the altitude – live at 6500 feet or the natural yeasts we have in this area. Should be baking soon though. Yum.
I don’t have one with a sense of humor or the ironic. I’m just glad if I can get a snuggle once in a while.
They don’t bug me relentlessly about food, that is the best trait they have, as a group.
I’ve never done a starter. Is it complicated?
Yeah…that ain’t gonna happen!
Margaret, Its very easy, this is my first attempt too. All it takes is flour, water, clean glass jars/bottles/bowls, and a little patience. Nature does the rest. I ran across a blog site that provides some really good insight and instruction even though its oriented towards Colorado. Its a site called Rural Spin. Check out the sourdough pages and view the videos.

Enjoy!
P.S. I’ll provide an update on my bread backing later today.
Where is the edit function for posts? Sheesh My apologies yellowsnapdragon, see my post #37. Not only that I mispelled baking. Good grief.
No edit function at MyFDL. Supposedly in some future upgrade. We read typonese and misdirect pretty well.

Awesome cute.
Hey, y’all.
Some of you may remember last summer when we made a nice outdoor “room” for picky. And, yes, Dragon, we Did make it mostly for him. Well, yesterday, we Re-Did it. Not a canopy this time, but a nice 8 ft. umbrella and all cleaned up. Weeded, raked, and a few new things planted. Bird baths cleaned and filled. Yesterday morning, after I made breakfast I thought it’s about that time of year to start eating outside again, but the table out there was Full ‘O stuff – mostly empty pots and a few dead plants and gardening stuff. But, it’s all cleaned up now and a new (to me, from the thrift store) tablecloth.
The Kitty King is all happy now.
Lotsa of lizards out there. More than other years. I wonder what that means.
(Thank Goodness.)
I mean, what it means besides the potential for “Drained Lizard” body presents on the side porch steps. Thanks, Picky. :)
Cool. More lizards means less bugs.
Saw some ladybugs on the tomato plants out back yesterday. They are supposed to be good luck, no?
Watching Evita right now. (My mister asked me, who is playing Evita? Huh, he’s not much on pop culture, but what he does know is amazing.) I like him. A lot.
We’re sitting down together a little bit later to make some camping reservations for summer trips. Yay!)
And, may I just say, oh, that Antonio Banderas. Ay yi yi. He may not be the finest of singers, but, oh, that face.
Update on Smoodgie.
When I went out to move the laundry to the dryer, there was Smoodgie, eating Big Boy’s leftover breakfast that I forgot to bring inside. She had a lot of blood around her ear and down her shoulder and back.
So, I let her eat, and brought out a soaked washcloth; when she finished and came to lie down beside me, I washed her bloody fur and around her ear; she not only tolerated that, but seemed to like it.
Then, I got a glimpse of her chin, and realized she had torn the bottom out of the tumor/lump! That was the source of the blood! Of course, she wouldn’t let me get a close look, but what I saw was ugly enough. Yeuck.
Poor baby.
Although, I think she actually felt better…she hadn’t actually come to the porch in a couple days, though she ate well if I got her the food.
I’m thinking now maybe it was more of an infection than a cancerous tumor, but worried that it will get worse infected.
I called the emergency clinic, and they said she needs to be in acarrier, of course.
I tried, guys, I really tried to get her into the carrier. You know how they suddenly have the strength of ten (strong!) men? That was her. I held her legs as tight as I could, but once she figured out what was going on, she fought like the very demon, and she won. Of course, then she was outta there as fast as possible. Doubt that I’ll see her again today, even if I hang around, or that she’ll respond to my calling her.
Sigh. F*ck f*ck f*ckety f*ck.
I failed, and now I worry that infection will kill her. If she shows up for breakfast, I’ll make another attempt (no early court or anything tomorrow).
But I’m actually going to be out of town Wed. evening, Thursday, and Friday for the State Bar Annual Meeting. Finally decided last week to go, even though I’d have to borrow the money, because there’s only 3 1/2 mos to get 8 more hours of CLE, and it would probably cost more to do them individually, plus finding the time and remembering to do it. This way I get more than enough in two days, and the chance to schmooze and make contacts for a possible better job or referrals, etc.
Hopefully I’ll schmooze better this year; last year I was too embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t been practicing, but I did meet someone who got me into the lawyers support group that was part of what gave me the confidence to try again.
Anyway, I worry that Smoodgie will avoid me the next two days and then I won’t be here. Darn her wary little feline feral instincts.
Sorry to hear. (Smoodgie) ((Mom))
This is a wild-ass suggestion, but is there any way you could put some kind of a sedative into her food, one that would calm her down enough to get her into the carrier?
I’m no expert on kittehs, so maybe this is a bad idea or too risky, but others with more experience like SD could maybe chime in?
Alternatively, is there some medication for the infection that you could get from the vet and put in her food? Maybe take a pix of the infected area to help the vet diagnose?
Just scramblin’ for some solution, and hoping for the best.
Thanks, demi.
I need to ask bgrothus how she gets Mr. Sadness to the vet once she catches him. Apparently she’s done it before. Unless she has a vet who makes house calls.
Guess everybody else is off doing their afternoon things. I might as well, go too, I guess; Smoodgie ain’t coming around any time soon.
Take care of yourself too, Missy.
It sounds like you’ll have a better time at this years Bar Meeting.
Go. Schmooze. Meet. Sounds like fun. And, who knows?
Hi, bp – I’ve asked the vet in the past, and they always say they can’t prescribe anything sedative before they’ve seen the cat at least once. The emergency vet’s office warned me she might need sedation just to be examined, but I had anticipated that. The time I, er, she needs it is before we get there!
I’m afraid that putting it in her food would also alert her…she’s pretty good at noticing anything unusual. Although I did manage to put the contents of a joint pain reliever into Itsa’s food without putting her off the food. Still, I have to have the stuff to try putting it in her food, and I’m not trying anything not vet-approved. Thanks for the suggestion, though; in theory, that’s what I’d love to do. Poor thing, she’s thoroughly frightened now.
But maybe tearing this thing open was the right thing, sorta like lancing…proving once more how sharp kitteh claws are…she seemed to have less and less energy the last two days, but she moved pretty darn fast today.
Hmm, just re-read the rest of your post, Beach Populist. I wonder if taking a picture could help with diagnosis? Of course, she has to come back and hold still long enough for me to approach! But she will calm down eventually. Trying to remember how long it took the last time she was upset with me trying to get her into the house.
I had an appointment for her with my regular vet last year, but she disappeared during office hours. First failure.
Ah, yes, Itsa. Remember her from your previous posts. For some reason I really liked that cat, even though from afar. Remember being so sad and angry at what happened to her.
Just wanted to say that you’re such a good soul for what you’ve done for Itsa and Smodgie and Big Boy. Are you sure you’re a lawyer? As a breed, they’re not really know for being warm and fuzzy!
That sounds like an abscess.
My vet once told me he had a pill that would give me about 5 minutes to get one into a carrier after it took effect. Doesn’t knock them out, apparently, but makes ‘em loopy or something. I’ve got years of experience with my vet so that may be why he told me.
Wow! Sucks about Smoodgie. I’m with SD though, it kinda sounds like an abscess and if that’s true, I wouldn’t worry too much, now that it’s draining.
If you could get some neosporin or something on the injury it would be helpful. I had some success with getting it on Suteneko, even though I was never able to get him into a carrier.
Yeah, they’re pretty adept at handling abscesses if ya can’t get them to a vet. Blood plus pus spells abscess in my book. Tumors don’t normally burst and drain.
I don’t remember the precise situation, but I remember that there was a cat that needed to go to the vet and we rented a trap…sounds awful but it was just a souped-up carrier.
What I do remember was that it worked.
Just sharing a past experience that may help. I wonder if the Animal Shelter has one you can borrow, or something?
Two things ya gotta have in every household, duct tape and neosporin.
Agreed. I’ve never seen an animal tumor burst.
I’ve often said that the keystone of civilization is pressure sensitive tape.
usually the animal cops have wire box traps for rent.
Hi everyone and happy Caturday, kittenses. Thank you, SD.
Cat bites are notorious for causing abscesses. They are puncture wounds that seal up and trap bacteria and the next thing you know your cat develops a nasty looking swollen area that needs to be lanced. When Ti was an outside kitteh she had at least two episodes.
In my Christmas stocking someone gave me a little squirt container of Neosporin. It looks dangerously like one of those little Listerine mouthwash pumps. Wouldn’t want to confuse the two! I guess that wouldn’t be much help, though, even though you could get some good coverage, she might freak out at the sound or sensation.
Around here those things are much more likely to catch a skunk or a raccoon.
When I glanced at that I thought it said skunk or moose!! LMAO!!
Whoa! WTF? I meant moose! ;)
I believe you owe me a Mimosa.
See my #54.
We could share. :)
*oh, spew!!*
Speaking of confusing the two…I have two bottles in the bathroom that look just alike, because they are both cvs generics. One is Witch Hazel, for my facey, and the other is isopopyl alcohol, for boo boos.
The other night, when we got back from Sonny’s Award Night, I grabbed the wrong bottle and splashes in my hand and rub rub rub. OMG. I actually screamed before I grabbed the wash cloth and turned on the water.
Thankfully, there was no harm done.
C’mon, you guys. You know these stories are why you love me.
What a sting…..
One time in the dark Abu Ali picked up a small bottle of contact cleaning solution and thought it was saline solution for his sinuses….he was suddenly foaming at the mouth.
Try putting some red electrician’s tape on the top of the bottle of the bad stuff.
Oh Noes. I’m always very careful if I put eyedrops in. I have nail glue, the bottle of which look the same.
It was a sting, to be sure.
So…I really, honestly did just get back from getting more neosporin. (You know, to go with the stinging alcohol.) I’m a clutz, and I live with my animal spirit guides, and I garden a lot.
Just the way it is.
And, I am a Girl Scout.
I LIKE that!
Thank you.
Is it cold at the beach today? It’s pretty cool on this NorthWest side of the Valley.
(Not complaining.)
It’s perfect at the beach. Sun’s shining, air is clear, very slight breeze.
Just a note to all: don’t let my screenname fool you into some vision of me sitting on the Strand watching the sun/sand/waves/sunset and the bikini babes go by while I have a drink with a little umbrella in it. I live a mile back from the beach in any area with no view, on a very narrow lot and even narrower house. One Beamer (dentist) and one Benz (dunno) on the block. The rest are ten year-old mini-vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks with a smattering of Saturns and Corollas. Everybody on my block that’s not retired works for a living. Hard. (And I gave up drinking 40 years this August.)
tejana, I also concur with the abscess diagnosis. It is telling that she was low for a couple of days prior, this is a symptom of the infection, and it seems to sap them for a couple of days before the thing bursts.
If you can help her keep it clean as you have helped her already, that will be good. Hydrogen peroxide is kind of brutal, you can dilute it and use that. You can also use some kind of iodine that will help to keep it clean. If it is on her chin, she will be able to work on it by herself, it is when it is on the back that it is very difficult for them to clean.
Mr. S is very docile when he is caught. Miss Sissy would not be, she would be more than a handful. But Mr. S gives up when I can catch him. He does not like getting put into the carrier, but he tolerates it, and he is very good at the vet. It is simply very hard to catch him, unless he is feeling bad or has his hardy “fur handles” as he had last week that I was able to grab. Now the “handles” are off, I have nothing to grab.
But I think the prognosis for Smoogie is good.
I believe an abscess is what Gracie had when her leg blew up like a balloon. Antibiotics did the trick, but poor thing did need to have her leg shaved to verify the nature of the wound.
Well I’ve spent a good portion of the day at the emergency room because my little one got hit with a falling board as Mr was doing work on the siding of the house. Scared the living bejesus out of me, but he’s totally fine no breaks or puncture wounds, just a freaked out mom.
That’s good to hear, not the freaked out mom part though.
I’ve seen squirrels with ‘em the size of golf balls, then one day it’s flat but you can see where it’s draining. Lots of clawing and biting goin’ on out there and Mother Nature has taken that into account somewhat.
I could use a stiff drink.
Here, throw down this single malt nip. Straighten ya right out. lol Don’t have any brandy.
*whew* Glad no one was hurt!
There is nothing worse. So very glad that the little one was ok. Don’t be surprised though if you have unsettling dreams tonight. That is a lot to process.
((ysd)))
x2. Hugs for everyone at your house.
Sharking. Back in a bit.
It’s always miraculous to me that we manage to raise them to adulthood. And, shit, then you still worry about them!! Little wretches :)
I had a ‘lost baby’ dream just the other night. Could hear John crying somewhere and realized that I hadn’t seen or fed him in days……used to have it when he was tiny…… He is 34 now, lol!
So good to see your fonts, bg.
Gotta run to finish dinner, bbl I hope.
ER!! Not a bit fun…But very glad for the good news. Some true excitement in your day….Let’s join SD for something cold….
Injured Iranian Cat, Maloos, Finds Home In Napa, California, After Cross-Border Rescue
What a great story! Thanks.
Too bad about the surgical mistake, Margaret, but he’s doin’ okay.
Gonna call it a day, y’all.
Thanks for coming by.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Goodnight everyone and thank you, SD
Night firecats.
Well, I see I’ve missed our host, but if he looks back in tomorrow, let me say thank you for the abscess “diagnosis.” I looked it up, and yes, it does seem likely that’s what it is.
I got a pretty good look at it, briefly, a little while ago while scritching her head on the good side…she stretched her neck up and I got a glimpse…frightening: looked like ridges, like I was looking at her spine or something. Pretty sure it isn’t, but I’d sure like to get a better look and be able to clean it.
Yes, she let me approach after all. Early evening I was planting a few things on the front porch, and passed my new neighbor’s front porch on the way to the trash barrel. There was Smoodgie, on her porch, in the corner by the door! I’ll spare you the details, but eventually she allowed herself to come into the patio for food. Wouldn’t come all the way, but when she lay down with a “thisfarandnofarther” look, I took the dish to her, and she ate eagerly.
I read up on abscess and some treatments for it; one “natural” treatment recommended washing it with a tea made from echinacea root and marigold. So I wasted the afternoon looking for such; neither Whole Foods nor Sprouts, thesuccessor to our local “natural foods” store carried the root, let alone marigold leaves. I would swear that at one time both had it in the bulk herb section. One of the things displaced by “pink Himalayan salt” and stuff, I guess.
So, while Smoodgie ate, I brought out a plastic syringe filled with peroxide (I didn’t dilute it, but guess I will go do that), wet washcloth, and sticks to itself bandage and put them on the step where her food usually is. Then I sat down to see if she would come for more scritches.
Sigh. The neighbor came down with the (small) dog, and of course, Smoodgie took off at high speed. I gave up and came back inside for awhile. I’m hoping she’ll come back later, but I know it will be awhile.
Yes, I am a bit relieved; if she can avoid infection, this is a lot better than a malignant tumor! But at some point, she’s just got to see a vet! Sheesh. It’s taken three years, nearly, to get to this point, so I’m not so optimistic as I was about getting her to come inside to live. But at least, I think she’ll survive this. I’d just really like to get in there and clean that thing.
Thank you SOOO much, everybody, who made helpful suggestions. I really appreciate them all. I have never seen an abscess, never had a clear idea what they looked like. Whew. Nasty.
Thanks again, everybody. Nice of Smoodgie to have her crisis on Caturday, so I could vent, share, and get good advice. Love to you all, and may you have great weeks.
Oh and ysp, so sorry you spent the afternoon in the ER, but glad all turned out okay.
well, the skunk might be real problem. ;)
I pulled a yoplait yogurt cup off a skunks head last year, and it didn’t seem to appreciate the favor at all!
Snort!!! That’s a good ending for the day. Also our friend newdealfarmgrrlll won TBogg’s DeadBreitbart photoshopping contest, well, tied, with bluegal;both entries were awesome.
Good nite, everybody.
