Today Fox and Glenn Beck’s production company said that Beck, “will be transitioning off his daily Fox News program.”
I’m very happy to hear this (don’t let Bones see me smiling). Beck and Fox are trying to spin this as some kind of “moving on to greater things” action instead of what it is; a big defeat for them and huge win for us. Beck is going off the air at Fox because of a successful, sustained action to convince advertisers that Beck is bad for their brand.
The folks at Color of Change and Angelo Carusone of @stopbeck (now directing the DropFox program at Media Matters) did all the heavy lifting in this work and I hope that the media covering this story will talk to them about it. However, knowing the media as I do, I doubt it.
The media will talk to a Beck spokesperson, a Fox spokesperson and some “expert” who has no real knowledge of the real financial situation at Fox, who will dismiss it as no big deal since Murdoch is still richer than God and NewsCorp made their projected numbers. Later this year John Stewart will have Beck on the show when he is ready to push his new programs and Barbara Walters will name Beck one of her “Most Fascinating People of the Year” Meanwhile there will be multiple magazine and newspaper profiles of Beck instead of Gabe, Rudy and the other fine folks at Color of Change or Angelo at Media Matters.
David may have defeated Goliath, but Goliath still has all the PR people on his payroll.
Beck leaving Fox shows that some propaganda purveyors are not acceptable to corporations. Blatant propaganda needs to be subsidized even though the corporations would still like to make money on it. (Nobody talks about think tanks as money losing organizations, yet that is what they are).
Beck losing his daily TV show should be a reminder to the left that advertiser alert programs are one successful way to impact right wing TV hosts. Presente did it with Lou Dobbs. I did it with radio hosts Melanie Morgan and Lee Rodgers at KSFO.
NewsCorp, a public company, should acknowledge the left’s advertiser alert program-but they won’t. NewsCorp and Murdoch have tried to dance around the impact of the advertiser alert campaign since it started. The media didn’t want to question him on the impact, so I did. For those of you who haven’t heard the story let me tell you about it.
How I Rubbed Murdoch’s Nose In Beck’s Advertiser Losses
I met with the Color of Change folks after their initial successful campaign to convince advertisers to leave. 81 advertisers left Beck’s TV show. I suggested contacting shareholders to point out to them that Beck isn’t making as much money as his ratings would indicate. I then contacted top NewsCorp and media financial analysts as well as the major NewsCorp institutional investors and pointed out the loses and suggested they question Murdoch about how long he will subsidize Beck. Here is one of my later letters to the largest NewsCorp institutional investor.
Next I contacted the advertising trade press and business press and pointed out that Beck wasn’t making the kind of money he should be even with good ratings and maybe they could ask Murdoch about it (I didn’t publish any of those letters). I hoped that one of them would ask Murdoch about it, but they were more interested in his plans to greenlight an Avatar sequel.
Finally, during a financial conference call last May I asked Murdoch myself.
I know that you don’t break out revenue numbers for Fox News beyond the top line, but with 81 advertisers leaving the Glenn Beck show following the Color of Change action, the show now seems limited to in house ads and gold ads. Do you have a time frame for how long Fox will subsidize the show until it to starts to generate revenue in line with its ratings?
Here was Rupert Murdoch’s response:
“It’s not subsidizing the show at all. And it’s giving a terrific kick off to the whole evening schedule. It has plenty of advertising, and those advertisers you talk about, I don’t think there is anything like that number, but if there were they are on other shows.”
Read the rest at Rupert and Me: I question the NewsCorp CEO about Subsidizing Glenn Beck
Murdoch’s response was treated as a legitimate response and not as a violation of the Sarbane Oxley Act of 2002 which requires the CEO to know what is happening financially inside his company. This isn’t the only case of Murdoch’s lack of knowledge about the internal workings of Fox within NewsCorp, but nobody is going to tell the SEC. I guess if a RW CEO says it, it must be true, even if it is a demonstrable lie.
I wish that some people on the left could seize the opportunities to impact RW media when they present themselves. Then I want them to press the advantage. If opportunities don’t present themselves, we have to create them. That is what I did.
I spent a lot of time developing concepts and methods that would work against right wing media and I did it without violating their First Amendment rights. I’m always pleased when some of these same techniques are used against race baiters like Glenn Beck.
I want to thank everyone who retweeted @stopbeck’s tweets to advertisers, who wrote letters during the Color of Change campaign or during the Tides Foundation campaign.
I also want to thank all the corporation communications people, the VPs of marketing, PR and HR would understood that you shouldn’t taint your brand by associating with someone like Glenn Beck. You have helped make America a less nasty place. This time you weren’t on the side of lies and ignorance. Feel good about yourselves for a bit. You did the right thing.

Bravo!
tweeted and recommended with thanks spocko.
difficult job, very effectively carried out by you, outstanding, thanks very much.
I neglected to give you the credit you deserve in my earlier diary on this, spocko. Sorry about that. Your diary here means a lot.
Beck did more than enough to kill himself off, but you’re doing a great job.
I’m glad you’re on our side, dude.
Thanks.
I know that Angelo and folks at Color of Change did all the heavy lifting. But I helped.
S
Thank you and the whole crew.
Fascinating.
(Wonderful work Spocko! I just wanted to start off in Spockspeak.)
Yay! Front Paged!
Now on to Limburger?
So did Fox cancel Beck’s show or did Beck leave on his own?
What a great story and fantastic outcome. Many kudos to you, spocko, and the whole group who made this happen.
I particularly liked the way you questioned Murdoch.
Thank you so much. You actually made an impact! What the progs need are lots and lotsa people to work FULL TIME doing what you do! I’m sure there are some, but the Republicans seem much more proficient at it unfortunately.
This is a great victory but FOX will probably find somebody as crazy but not as toxic to put in the slot.
x2
Beck will just have to find another table to leave his bucket by, eh Spocko?
;>)
If I could triple recommend, I would. Thanks for all that you have done for this and the other campaigns. Your work on the radio station advertisers was a good leadoff for the follow-on campaigns.
Well, it is my name.
Awesome job, Spocko…! *g*
You know, it really is all about money (as Marx would have pointed out if he were still with us). The networks are like parasites on the American psyche. They will present whatever they can sell. If it’s fear, fine with them. If it were fuck the rich, they’d do it too, because they could find a means of isolating themselves from any practical effects (like Teddy Roosevelt’s friends did). Beck is a parasite. The people who advertise on his shows parasite the parasite.
There’s got to be a biological model for this pathology.
Good for you and all the rest of the team, Spocko!
We will have to see where he tries to go and swat that nasty away.
You know the interesting thing is that the funders on the left are finally getting this (at least at Media Matters). I’ve been doing this since 2005.
Of course I have lots of other ideas on how to do some other work directed at the people and organizations that actively fund and harm the people on the left. All legal. But I’ve been talking to some of the funders and they all get kind of squeamish when I talk about programs that will financially hurt a company, legally get people in trouble or fired.
I think it is because it’s one thing to donate to a group who want to help the poor it’s another thing to give to a group that wants to make someone poor.
Plus, the fear of retaliation. The right wing people are nuts and they have lawyers guns and money.
I’d like to think that there are some funders out there who would fund me and a team of people going after folks like Limbaugh, Pete Peterson, Koch, Breitbart, Hannity and Heritage. They all need different tactics and have different weaknesses. But they all could be set back on their heels.
Instead people wait for the politicians or journalists to do something. Not going to happen.
Hopefully the Spocko Squad will be real some day. We’ll all get fedoras.
And a big thanks from me, too, Spocko. Amazing work. It’s a model.
Maybe Beck is leaving FOX to run for president. That would be fun.
Be careful what you wish for.

There needs to be some special web award for your images.
Thanks. Coming from you, that really means something. I listened to 2 quarterly conference calls so I could develop the right tone and wording.
When the story got picked up by the LA Times, Think Progress, and Olbermann they didn’t use my name, I was just some “analyst”
As far as I was concerned that was a total win, I sounded so much like an analyst they called me one.
Approaching NewsCorp like a shareholder and demanding to know when they are going to deliver greater quarterly earnings is something that I’d like to do with other funders of right wing causes.
Sadly buying congress people, funding RW think tanks are actually a good “investment” and ROI. What I would do is ask them “How soon do you expect to see an ROI on your funding of Chamber of Commerce ads. They will want to 1) Say it’s not a lot of money 2) Not say that it will pay off right way 3) Ask how you found out they were donating to the Chamber and deny it if you don’t have proof.
The Citizens United spending will be huge, but companies are hiding it from their customers AND their Shareholders. Why? They are afraid of both finding out and wondering if that is the best use of their money.
“I’d like to think that there are some funders out there who would fund me and a team of people going after folks like Limbaugh, Pete Peterson, Koch, Breitbart, Hannity and Heritage. They all need different tactics and have different weaknesses. But they all could be set back on their heels.”
As an eCAHNomist, I always get stuck on the money differential which is HUGE.
So I really admire a creative approach that can overcome that, and yours is one of the best I’ve seen.
Exactly. Better a Beck than a Hannity me thinks. Beck is obviously a wack-job who is all over the map. But truth be told, his recent Federal Reserve show was better than anything you’ll find on MSNBC.
Kudos, Spocko. Good job, well done!
Thanks. I’ve been thinking about ways to use it on twisted local DJs (like Jon and Ken and a few in Arizona) I’m also thinking about
methods where you simply activate the limited regulatory bodies still in place.
I’ve been looking at Qui tam laws, SEC laws, IRS laws as well as looking at plan ol’ criminal laws. So for example what if someone was hired to keep an eye on Rush when he was on parole? Do we really think that he stopped cold turkey with the drugs? Do we know the age and sex of the person he used that viagra pill on in the DR?
Some of the work is just good detective and journalism work. Some is technical, looking at tax structure as well as SEC laws. I’m thinking of a group of Untouchables with a skill set customized to the group/person we are looking at.
Spocko: Your methodical and deliberate approach in trying to get Beck removed was very smart – and obviously very effective. Instead of going for the cheap, 10-minute sound bite win, you chose the longer path. And as we should have already learned from the wingnuts (unfortunately), the long-term approach invariably works best. (The right has been working very methodically for at least 30 years to (essentially) gut the progressive/liberal/left movement, and it’s been very effective in that effort. We now know how it’s done, and so (hence), it’s time to start beating these gangsters at their own game. The Beck departure proves that it can be done.
I find this remark, in particular, very important: “I wish that some people on the left could seize the opportunities to impact RW media when they present themselves. Then I want them to press the advantage. If opportunities don’t present themselves, we have to create them. That is what I did.”
In other words, beat them at their own game.
Very good job. Go ahead and do a few victory laps. You, the people at Color of Change, Media Matters, etal deserve it. You brought one home for the Good Guys.
Next stop: Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Savage, and a host of others…
I like the way you think, and you seem to have a wide enough skill set to apply different specific approaches where they will matter most.
Only one of the approx 100 people I interviewed for my research assistant in the course of my carrier (6-7 interviews to hire one every other year) ever asked me the most obvious and best Q: What is the most important skill I would need to do this job well.
Having never been asked it before, I paused to think a bit before answering: You’ve got to wake up every day and say ‘There’s got to be a better way.’ (She expected me to say something specific like ‘a really good knowledge of macroeconomics.’)
I’ve been trying to apply that principle to overcoming the money advantage, but so far haven’t.
Yours seems to be the better way.
Beck is a delusional nut who has been helping drag this country into the gutter. Too bad this won’t be the last we’ve heard of him.
Meanwhile, calling this a “huge win for us” is a bit of an overstatement.
Convincing Obama to be the president he promised to be… now that would be a huge win for us!
And Angelo Carusone (@StopBeck on teh Twitter) is going to be on the Ed Show, which fortunately CHris Hayes is hosting tonight.
I expect Angelo to say something he has said many times before:
“Impotent frustration is not a strategy. Persistence Matters.”
Thanks again for your persistence Spocko!
Is Limpbaught half the menace he used to be?
Great win Spocko, interesting that you used cost-benefit analysis to attack Beck while the Right, with help from dems, has used it since the ’70s to dismantle the Dew Deal, enviornmental protection, worker safety and now the remander of the safety net.
Speaking of impotent frustration…
Can you not ONCE participate in a celebratory moment of a Companion who made a difference?
Bachmann-Beck. Has sort of a nice, wingnut ring to it. Princess Dumbass of the North would be pissed, but she could be made Secretary of Cash Registers…or some other position which comports with her particular skill set. Perhaps that would placate her.
I don’t know the answer to that question but either way, I’d enjoy seeing him be publicly humiliated. And then wife #4 would clean out a substantial amount of assets and leave him for, ya know, a human…Sorta complete the cycle of life.
Add Laura mean-girl to your list.
I don’t think the underlying implications of this should be understated. The fact is that a long-term, well-organized campaign succeeded in getting a class-A, card-carrying lunatic removed from cable TV – at least as a regular “contributor.” As I said before, what this tells me is that it can be done. Moreover, it most certainly SHOULD be done. It’s time for some righteous ass-kicking. It’s been a long time coming…
“Impotent frustration is not a strategy. Persistence Matters.”
Bingo.
Copy that.
Love your work. Maybe David Brock and the friends who fund him should take a closer look at developing a ‘Spocko Squad’ under the wing of Media Matters. This is exactly the kind of media activism that progressives should be potentiating with our ‘patient capital.’
It’s a great win, spocko.
Agreed!
Thank you!
And thank you for noticing the time, strategy and tactics.
I studied other programs to see what did and didn’t work and then I kept tweaking them as they went. The right contacted advertisers too, but they threatened a boycott. I never did with KSFO. I knew that the advertisers hate the idea of a boycott. In this case it was about convincing the advertisers to make the decisions based on their stated values. Most of them say, “We are not race baiters and do not support them.” That was color of change’s message.
For KSFO hosts I focused on their violent rhetoric, wanting to kill journalists, Muslims and liberals.
As I said each can be beat, but different ones need different strategies.
I’ve developed strategies for Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Keefe and his buddies. (I actually helped a group called “HateHurtsAmerica” bust Savage to the tune of 1 million dollars and 18 advertisers. They got sued by Savage but won.) Savage got kicked off the air in SF for awhile too.
But it would take some time and money. Funders don’t want to touch this stuff because they think I’m going to do dirty tricks or because they would rather fund good journalism or campaign ads.
I wish I could get them to see what the ROI is of an action like this. How much would it be worth it to the left is Limbaugh was in jail? If O’Keefe as severing time for his felony? Would the people at the Heritage Foundation be able to get as much money if their funders found how they were misusing the money and surfing porn during the day?
I have a track record both as Spocko and in real life, but the same stuff that would get me a six figure job on the right I’m expected to do for free on the left AND to donate to the causes I’m helping on top of it!
Right and great stuff, Spocko. So far, for 2011, You Are The Man!
In passing, it’s been more than fascinating to both follow your work-in-progress as you often presented it for us at Late Late Night, and now to see it bear such delicious fruit.
Don’t ever stop.
You’re right. In context, it does matter. As Spocko points out, Presente did it with Lou Dobbs at CNN and it’s been done successfully in other cases, too. And, as you say, it most certainly SHOULD be done.
Well done, Spocko!
When it comes to Obama and the rest of the sellout Democrats, I don’t think my frustration is any more or less impotent than anyone else’s around here.
Maybe Fox is rushing to drop Beck ahead of the feds going after his Gold Coin advertisers? Huckabee, Laura Ingram a bunch of other Righties also shilled for the gold.
Beck today Huckabee tomorrow with Huckabee out Mitt the boring faces Sarah and Michelle for first and second place.
Take a bow Spocko:)
Thanks AitchD. Talking this stuff out at LLN really helps, both for clarify and for imput. Not all my actions work out because I can’t scale them enough or they are just two subtle.
I really need to hear from people because people who are in the real world who actually agree with me tell me stuff I need to know.
One example of that is the way that I had to create a “Liberal FAQ” for my work on the radio stations. Explain to the liberals that this was not an infringement of the hosts first amendment rights and why.
That helped a lot.
Bravo and kudos to you Spocko!!! Yay!!!
The network of Glen Beck has a lock on older White males who don’t spend as much as younger people.
Plus with Beck, O’Reily, Hannity etc Fox has just how many African American and Hispanics watching?
It must be a real hard sell to advertisers to advertise on Fox. Fox’s ad people must reassure their advertisers that no don’t worry Glen, Bill, Sean etc won’t say anything that will get your company boycotted.
This economy is bad Spocko even a 3% drop in sales can hurt a company. We have power we just need to use it.
Look at Rush’s maid and servants to be his bag men look at them buying oxy and viagra in large amounts.
No he has not gone cold turkey but he may have switched to another drug maybe even a legal one. Notice his huge weight loss recently coke would do that also the guy is still one big mac away from buying the farm.
We need pictures of him with his shirt off I suspect several ultra rich unhealthy GOPers have gone to the black market for organ transplants.
Between Oxy, viagra and 300+ pounds Rush looks like a heart transplant candidate to me.
“All legal.”
Legal and above the board. Right in the wallet, where they’ll pay attention. Just pointing out the lack of viability. Beautiful.
Spocko, you’re awesome! But then you already know I feel that way from all the years back at Echaton.
I would love to be able to get up to speed on corporate tax laws and SEC laws. Actually, we discussed this a few months back with Margaret. It would make America a better place if the SEC would just throw the book at the biggest portion of these crooks.
A laurel and hardy ‘well done’ spocko, thanks for fighting the good fight for us all!
Thanks for all you do, Spocko, from the staff at MercuryRising. :-)
I remember just how nasty KSFO was to you, how you hung in through it, and knew then that you have the right stuff.
How strange that in 21st century America, telling the truth, not making stuff up, and not demonizing others are cutting edge morality.
Bravo Spocko.
Glenn Beck has lost more than a third of his television viewers in just a year; his radio show has been dropped in several major media markets after its ratings declined; advertisers have abandoned him in droves, and sales of his most recent book fell far short of expectations. Soon he will be relegated to the AM band, and soon after that, relegated to barking at passing traffic from a street corner in downtown Seattle.
Bye Glenn, it was truly horrible knowing you.
Beck is a loose cannon. I just know he is going to trash talk on FOX and I can’t wait.
“Later this year John Stewart will have Beck on the show when he is ready to push his new programs and Barbara Walters will name Beck one of her “Most Fascinating People of the Year””
Just like the Demopublican uniparty, media mavens do great kabuki theatre but enjoy snorting white powder together like billy-oh when the cameras are off. All just one big happy family.
Gagged through watching Beck for two days to list the advertisers I will boycott for the rest of my life. That’s what I did about his influence.
hmmm… :) Many Thanks (to everyone who worked on this) and a huge (((Spocko))) xox
per everyone else, AWESOME.
Spocko, thank you.
Great work, Spocko!!!
Are you ready to take on the Koch brothers yet?
Surely, they are becoming wary of committing so many financial resources to folks like Scott Walker who clearly has a real election nightmare coming up.
I have nearly 800 twitter followers, and they’re mostly pretty intelligent people.
How do you spell relief? I always thought Beck was spaced out on something, sort of like Elmer Gantry.
There was one interesting episode when he focused on Friedrich Hayek, but he beat that to death, too. The rest was a tiresome reason to switch channels or turn off the TV entirely.
Celebrations are premature. There will be replacement stuff at Fox. Whoever doesn’t like it (e.g., most of the magpies here) should simply not watch that, either, if it’s upsetting. Just as before. . .
“In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.”
George Orwell
The highest of kudos to you, spocko.
As Margaret Mead said, don’t ever underestimate the power of a small band of thoughtful people to change the world-indeed,it’s the only thing that ever has.
You did a great job in getting him off TV
- of course being off daily TV does not mean he is totally gone (Fox will use him in “reports, specials, etc.”) and his radio world continues (as Rush showed during all those years when he could not get radio advertisers, the right wing folks will absorb a $50 million loss each year so as to have someone on the air).
But it is good that economic pressure made Fox feel he could be replaced by a biased lying new face that others in the media will not assume is without credibility. He was at a personal level slime.
Great post, Spocko! Thank you so much.
“I also want to thank all the corporation communications people, the VPs of marketing, PR and HR would understood that you shouldn’t taint your brand by associating with someone like Glenn Beck. You have helped make America a less nasty place. This time you weren’t on the side of lies and ignorance. Feel good about yourselves for a bit. You did the right thing.” No offense, but that’s Bullshit, they only fired him because of the BOTTOM line. Murdoch (Mordor) and his evil flunky monkees ( which only do what he tells them to do) gave Glenn his walking papers because he was losing the brand $$ and fast. If he had ranted and raged all day and night and the nos. had gone in the opposite direction they wouldn’t have cared a bit what he was saying.
This dude bears looking at very closely, I think.

Obviously a low-rent operation. However, the idea of using paids trolls to bomb blogs can, I think, do some damage to progressive / sane causes over time. They must not be allowed to get a toehold.
http://www.advantageconsultants.org/index.html
Please take a look at these guys, too. This sort of shit needs to be stopped before it really gets rolling…
congratulations to everyone involved and especially to you Spocko, for confronting Rupert Murdoch. Neil Chenoweth has another book coming out about NewsCorp where in its essentially criminal nature will be painfully obvious.
