Radio host Nicole Sandler tried to ask a question to her congressional representative Allen West (FL-R) at a Town Hall last night. Instead of getting an answer to a follow up question about Medicare she got ejected and arrested. Later in the Broward County Florida jail she was put in solitary confinement and maced.
Remember all the Tea Party people who were ejected, arrested and put in jail for asking questions about health care in 2009? Remember all the stories on Fox of them being maced in jail? I wonder if they are still serving time.
My friend GottaLaff at The Political Carnival has updated arrest details and video. In addition Brad Friedman of Bradblog has more info from Nicole following his interview with her on KPFA today.
I’m an email buddy of Nicole’s and I early this week I passed on some suggestions for asking questions at a typical town hall event where you line up to ask questions. That format is usually: one question, no follow ups, limited number of questioners, limit the time devoted to questions. Imagine my surprise this morning reading that Nicole was arrested for trying to ask a question. I felt guilty that I didn’t provide her my advice and strategy for what West’s “Town Hall Meeting” had become, a tightly controlled staged speech with filtered questions. Sorry Nicole.
I designed my team strategy of asking questions at a town hall to show well-behaved Americans asking honest questions and then being rebuffed by a recalcitrant representative. I forgot that the GOP doesn’t want to even be in the same area code with honest questions. When you can’t win the fight you fix the format.
People here at FDL probably know about all the methods politicians use to manage journalists and constituents but I found even educated people start accepting structures as normal when they are in fact designed to be limiting. Look at the above Town Hall questioning set up. It makes it easy for the politician. Even then, this set up was still too scary for West’s handlers so he got rid of the constituent’s microphones, limited the questions to written ones which were then selected by his staff and then read by them. Wow. Way to control the box West’s staff!
Now it may be obvious to us, but think about what happens when you force written questions and remove microphones. Say you wanted to follow up to a question that you have written that the staff selected and read. With no mic you have to shout to be heard. Suddenly you are a “heckler” instead of a constituent who wants an answer. As General Akbar might say, “It’s a trap!”
What was the Question Nicole wanted to ask?
One thing I wanted to know was what the question that West was so afraid to answer. From her interview on the Tom Hartmann show today here it is:
“How is privatizing Medicare SAVING Medicare? How does making something less efficient, more expensive save it?” I wanted to ask “Give me the name of an insurance company that would cover a 75 -year-old” with several ailments?”
- Nicole Sandler’s questions for her representative, Allen West.
That question got her arrested last night. The set up of the venue helped her look more like a shouting heckler than what she is, a constituent who wants an answer.
Nicole will be needing support from our community, if you have the means consider donating to her defense fund.
If anyone is interested in going to GOP Town Halls and asking questions let me know and I’ll detail my patent pending Spocko team question structure. But be advised, many GOP congressional handlers are switching to a written question format, no microphone rule and they would rather arrest people than answer a question.
You know they are running scared when they can’t even manage a handful of spoken questions for 10 minutes.

Nothing like that will happen in my district. That’s because Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI-11) doesn’t do town halls. He doesn’t even show up at League of Women Voters candidate forums. I think he’s allergic to constituents.
tweeted and recommended spocko
I read the rest of the story on Bradblog. All I can say is wow, just wow.
In a story I read earlier today about these town hall meetings in Florida yesterday, one of the reps had the nerve to blame the dems for “infiltrating” their meeting. Hello asshole, you got you some dems and progressives in your districts, get over it.

Hmmm. Interestingly, I don’t remember the people threatening Lloydd Doggett’s life being arrested or the armed people showing up and shouting down Democratic Reps going to jail.

I honestly don’t remember that even when they brought guns snark tag needed? Also whats the charge for asking a question how much time do you do for that?
If West was a Dem, and Nicole a repub, this would be the lead story on Fox News for the next week and then some.
Repubs always forget that the oath of office they take includes representing all of their constituents…not just the loyal Kool-aid drinking gop.
Ann Coulter has had police patrolling her audiences and roughing up pesky questioners. SOP for the brown shirt mob.
Sounds like abuse of office and wrongful arrest for political purposes the Feds should investigate. Or did we just step into Orwell territory and Obama is just a sad puppet is Obama even more like Bush than I though?
Again the Feds should be investigating tax payer dollars are being wasted. Elected officials job is to listen to their voters.
What a story, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Tea baggers are allowed to carry automatic weapons to town hall meetings, but someone who is a political journalist asking a fair question is given the bum’s rush and Bradley Manning-esque treatment?
If so, the jackboots are much closer than we fear.
Hey spocko, Maloney (Dino, NY silk stocking) set up a mock town hall last spring with 7 “guests” to talk about employment, none of them union reps. The plan was to eat up all the time with presentations so constituents would be voiceless.
By way of background Maloney has no real oppo, so she rarely holds town halls at all.
RW showed up to heckle (maybe 100-150 constituents in attendance). Those were the TP days. A little discontent from the left, but very little. Very revealing for me, who never went to such a meeting.
Peggy, Peggy, Peggy –
Must you keep bringing up pesky facts and comparisons? How very gauche.
When they own the police force…..
I thought the Tea Party was popular heck I saw a poll at FDL today saying people were divided on Ryan’s budget? Ryan’s budget is the only GOP issue happening now I smell fear we need to keep pushing. They retreat we advance. The Dems, the media stand around we march without them.
Tea baggers are allowed to carry automatic weapons to town hall meetings, but someone who is a political journalist asking a fair question is given the bum’s rush and Bradley Manning-esque treatment?
The GOP fears the question is more dangerous than the gun?
This is SO wrong!!! The videos of the tea party audience yelling at the Dem’s town hall meeting without arrest and then a video of Nicole Sandler’s arrest needs to be shown to the pubic. Good material for Rachel Maddow Show. Also agree totally with TCU on abuse of office and wrongful arrest. Maybe it is time for our peaceful revolution – if Egypt can do it facing tanks, we can do it with our Constitution in hand.
Yes. There are all sorts of tricks used. I included them in this post but figured that it would be boring to FDL people.
Ryan’s Path to Prosperity never passed the smell test. The huge reaction against it is telling. The GOP is rocked on its heels. Don’t expect anything good from Democrats.
If Congresspeople don’t want to answer questions they should not get paid heck even WallMart employees at those wages have to deal with angry customers Congresspeople get paid the big bucks for a reason if they don’t do their duties well their pay is mandated by law but not their healthcare benefits.
Anyone read Newsweek or Time my Mom gets them anyway the MainStreamMedia was calling Ryan’s plan brilliant. They were calling it a serious plan that address the National debt.
It seems we got the message out and the people listened to us and not the media.
We still need to force change but hey we got through to the American people:)
Agreed. West designed the whole Town Hall location and format so that he could get rid of pesky people who didn’t agree with him.
1) He chooses a hall that is a private facility (a church) so that he can evict someone for trespassing.
2) Questions are limited to writing. In a large crowd if you want to talk you need to shout to be heard. The optics of that means you MUST shout. When you shout you look angry and that could lead to a RIOT! (BTW, look at the police report on GottaLaff’s site to see that is exactly how they wrote it up.)
3)West’s people work very hard to “control the box” (the venue and all that goes into it)so that he ‘wins’ the event. All politicians want to do this, ones that are less skilled need to use tricks like West.
Yeah, I want the “patent pending Spocko team question structure.”
Minor thing– no picture or video on the front page? :-t
Perhaps if she’d been packing heat…/S…..
“Even then, this set up was still too scary for West’s handlers so he got rid of the constituent’s microphones, limited the questions to written ones which were then selected by his staff and then read by them.”
Years ago, a family member and I tried to question a politician campaigning for county executive about his role in the fraudulent alteration of court documents. When we tried to ask the question at a campaign event, they had the same M.O.: written questions only, screened by staff.
We tried to question him after the event and he ran away very fast. The opposition got a tape of him running away from us and frequently aired it on public access. He lost the election.
Good. Mzchief. I’ll do a diary on it. I always feel want to know people are interested before I write stuff up.
My Front page has the flip phone video Nicole shot. I don’t know why your’s did not.
And is Mr. President, the eloquent speaker, taking up this issue? Defining the interests of working people, and the working poor against the monied interests?
He has the so-called bully pulpit, after all. But he is MIA as usual.
Funny all the Media experts got the facts wrong again. Funny all the serious journalists could not sell the voters on the latest day is night night is day lie. Funny the Media companies are going bankrupt.
It seem people don’t trust the Media because they think its to rightwing, to much corporate owned, to many lies etc.
I mean a budget that cuts our benefits to give the rich a tax cut? A budget that does not fix the National debt because war and military spending is off the table?
Pull my finger!
This might be what we will need to do if the rest of the GOP starts doing this. The word from a GOP conference call is that the staffs are all going to move to the “written questions only” M.O.
It is just good politics not to allow your opponents to mess with your town hall meeting with uncomfortable questions.
Fox is covering it, but not quite like they covered the teabaggers’ attendance and questionings last year and in 2009:

Ryan’s budget is the Corporate GOP’s wish list along with getting rid of Unions, Child Labor laws and Pensions the government promised employees in lieu of higher pay.
Its hard to believe but the Corporate GOP’s agenda/ideas are whats caused weeks worth of protests in Wisconsin. Whats causing GOPers to hide from their own voters.
Its hard to believe the Fundies and Birthers have less negatives nobody is protesting them.
Trump, Sarah, Michelle are back in the game Ron Paul is going to have problems.
The Corporate GOPers like Mitt can’t even make the news cycle for 5 minutes but they have all the cash, bought the best campaign staff, polsters, Public Relations people to frame their positions on issues heck they crafted the Ryan budget to appeal to voters in anticipation of the Presidential election.
The Corporate GOP needs new issues to run on STAT. Funny they can’t talk about creating jobs. Nobody is buying tax cuts will create jobs anymore.
HOW can arrest be made for freedom of speech exercise?
Barry’s mouthpieces aren’t much better. They’re just better dissemblers.
All governments lie.
If these guys are so proud of Ryan’s plan, why are they afraid of their constituents? Why are they afraid to defend it? Rhetorical I know.
Maybe that is what should be asked at these town halls: why don’t you have the balls to defend yourself?
Since these R’s don’t find it necessary to “represent” those of differing opinions, maybe their pay should be cut to that percentage of voters in their districts who agree with them.
The event was on private property. The arresting officer said that she was warned to leave and then when she didn’t he said that he pushed her several times. (of course the video shows differently.)
Their is a reason they hold these on private venues. It gives them more legal control of the people attending and an excuse to get rid of them via trespassing.
I don’t think she will get charged for trespassing, but I can’t read the report very clearly.
I adjusted an add-on for my browser and the video displayed properly.
So constituents get arrested for rebutting the statements or asking questions of elected officials? That’s craptastic.
I was able to read all but one word of the probable cause affidavit. I don’t know if it’s any help, but here’s my reading of it:
Arrested was at a Town Hall Meeting for Congressman West when she became very disruptive and loud, interfering with the meeting. Her behavior caused many of the audience members to enter into a verbal altercation with her that threatened to become physical. I instructed defendant to leave the property no less than a dozen times. Defendant kept stopping[?] refusing to leave; as I attempted to cuort [sic] her out she because physically aggressive with this ofc [sic], pushing me several times. Def [sic] was finally placed under arrest.
Any chance that the people in West’s district won’t be stupid enough to re-elect him?
I lived in Rep. West’s district 2006-09 and proudly voted against him (and for Ron Klein) in 2008. We all knew the guy was a menace and a charlatan then, but I guess the disillusionment of Dems in ’10 really cost the district — and the country.
I suppose I should be amazed I wasn’t arrested when I spoke at the Pensacola (FL) Tea Party rally in 2009 (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/30255102#30255102), but then they weren’t quite as good at message control and propaganda as Rep. West.
Sorry, that link was bad. Try this one instead:

As a closeted gay man, Allen West (FL-R) should be ashamed of himself. To be such a frightened coward is a disgrace to brave gay people everywhere.
Thank you, Spocko. This is a disturbing event. One among many.
They are cowards through and through and they can’t hide it any longer.
The mask is coming off.
That is the meaning of “apocalypse,” you know.
I went to my first town hall during the HC debate, and this format was used. Longtime D Rep said she’d been doing it this way for ages. Probably in response to a prior policy melee.
To be fair, she didn’t cherrypick the question cards, although her answers sometimes left something to be desired.
The long “presentation” and charts were a staple at Congr.Webster’s Orlando meeting. ” He tried to run down the clock so much, people were shouting begin the meeting stop the propaganda. ”
Maybe picketers outside with the written questions on signs?
