Today Copwatch put up this video of undercover police officers at Occupy Oakland protests.
“Copwatch@Occupy Oakland: Beware of Police Infiltrators and Provocateurs“.
I would like for people in other Occupy cities to watch this, and if they have the skills, I encourage them to create the same kind of video or photo document. This is the kind of work that Charles Grapski has done on the New York and DC protests and Matt Kresling recently did on the Oakland Occupy protest. (Kresling was the blogger who took the KTVU footage of the protests and produced a video that clearly showed a police officer throwing a flash bang grenade into the crowd around Marine Scott Olsen.)
Police departments in various cities talk, they use some of the same tactics and methods. If I lived in Portland and supported Occupy Portland I could do this kind of video. When done, I’d post the video and contact the local media covering this story. They would then go to the police for comment.
The police will often say, “We don’t have undercover operatives.” They can then be shown the video to see how they respond to the video. (Remember when the police said, “We didn’t use flash bang grenades, it was protesters with M-80s.” then they saw the footage?) Next they move to excuse number two, “We didn’t’ know about it.” Then to excuse number three, “The police officers are there to protect the safety of the protesters.”
The police will object to this kind of video for many reasons including the fear that an undercover cop might be in danger if he is in another undercover operation. That’s really not our problem. The police made a decision to use an undercover cop in this way and they got caught. The MSM might agree with the police and refuse to run a story which would amplify the undercover cop’s identity, but now the protesters know and some of the public following along at home will find out, giving them more sympathy for the protesters and more suspicion of the police’s claims.
I understand that police departments decide to use undercover cop’s for multiple reasons and I’m not saying they are just there to incite violence. They could be there to gauge the mood of the crowd and calm them down. But as a number of old hippies will tell you, and as the 2010 National Lawyer’s Guild report points out (PDF link), historically this is not the role of undercover cops at protests.
From a perception point of view OWS loses support when the public believes violence started with the protesters. Today Justin Elliot at Salon did a great follow up story on a police union official who claimed over 20 officers have been injured in the protests — but he won’t give details. I suggested to Justin that if he does hear back from the police spokesperson that he ask for video proof and if they can’t provide it ask for the dates, times and locations of the alleged injured officers. I’ll bet there are some Occupy Wall Street person who has video of the alleged event. If not, there is always the Lower Manhattan Security Coordination Center with its thousands of public and private Wall Street security camera feeds. Wall Street has eyes and ears folks, if we can’t use our tools to incriminate them, we can use theirs.

By the way, thanks everyone for reading and tweeting my articles, because of your help my advice got to the Occupy Wall Street people on the ground. It also got to the right wing website run by serial liar and known fabricator, Andrew Breitbart.
Remember the post “What to do when the Media says a Protester Attacks a Cop.“ I put up here at FDL? Well over 500 people tweeted it and it got to the double secret listserv that some Occupy Wall Street people read and that Breitbart people got access to.
Apparently Big Government now believes I’m in charge of the PR strategy for Occupy Wall Street. I’m totally putting that on my Spocko CV.

Congrats on your elevation to the, Enemies Of The State List, Spocko. You can wear that bullseye on your back with pride.
The infiltration, psyops and Cointelpro will continue and must be countered luckily there are more resources today than in the ’60s to uncover these distortions.
The small GA i attended in Albuquerque Sunday even has one, not so undercover, snoop with a camera. The University police were parked behind a tree using their mirror to observe the proceedings, clownish amateurs.

You can gauge the crowds mood by walking through the protest in uniform.

20 cops injured but no details? Right the Main Stream Media would have had 24/7 coverage of that if they had details and it really happened.
Congrats on your new job, Spocko! That Soros moolah is so, so sweet! :)
Funny 20 police injured supposedly but no arrests? Was there a riot and the police lost control? The NYPD was bragging about all their surveillance cameras on 60 Minutes a few weeks back and how they can track any terrorist in the city with computers pulling pictures of for example anyone with a certain color coat on a certain street at a certain time.
Now the police claim they can’t find these guys who injured 20 police officers despite I am sure some of the police getting a good look at the people who supposedly injured them and adding those details to what the computer should look for in their surveillance camera video files?
Either the police are lying about the 20 officers injured or they lied about how good their surveillance cameras are at finding terrorists.
Which is it both statements cannot be true.
Proof Spocko is getting Soros money? And when do I get my check:)
Ah yes, that sweet sweet Soros money. I’m getting a gold plated fedora made.
I told him, “George, I just want a piece of the actions.”
Andrew Breitbart gets his funding from who? Given his record lying he should not be getting his articles published in the Press but America’s press is a right wing hate propaganda machine.
Given his record lying I wonder if his books are published in England? Given their libel laws we could take him down in England if his publisher sells his books there.
James O’Keefe has claimed that he did not write the date rape script he planned to pull on that CNN reporter given Breitbart’s connection to James I wonder if it was him who had the never been laid date rape fantasy planned for that CNN Reporter?
MTV is talking about doing a reality show about OWS my guess is the police have to create violence something horrible to stop the show from being made very soon.
The last thing the banks want is for the brain dead reality show tv viewers to get politically involved and aware of whats going on.
The last thing the banks want is for Red State Real America to develop empathy for OWS people.
So I suspect that Spocko’s idea of watching for police Infiltrators and Agent Provocateurs is necessary.
But how will we catch Blackwater Infiltrators and Agent Provocateurs thats the banks next logical step.
Thanks spocko. not sure if you posted the link to cops undercover, but here it is. if you scroll down the page you can play the video.

Thanks mswinkle. It’s there, I would have embedded it, but we can’t do that with diaries.
[Ed. Note - yes, you certainly can embed standard youtubes. We'll embed your first link for you.]
When are you buying me lunch? :)
Both statements could easily be lies; they are not contradictory.
Thanks! I obviously haven’t figured it out. I appreciate the help!
I stand corrected :)
Spocko, again recommended. Your stuff should certainly be front page, at least in these times.
I have to remember to start using smiley or frowny faces. My comment to you would have been a smiley.
Hey, Spocko – this one’s for you!

Right? Check!
You pointed out the cops were bigger liars than I thought I don’t mind being proven wrong if it helps OWS.
My logic skills need to be brushed up more I can live with that:)
Everyone needs to improve at something and i need to improve on the logic.
I’ve got to find a credit union to deposit my check in. Then of course there is the conversion of Euros to quatloos to loonies and then to dollars. It will be awhile.
Will any police dept admit that the banks are asking them to hassle OWS protesters? Will Andrew admit he’s funded by the banks and other GOP forces?
Will they admit funding the Tea Baggers to in part try and take people’s minds off the banks destroying the economy?
Sooo funny, Spocko. Because of the Occupy movement, I find myself, 71 years old on Wednesday, figuring out how to do all kinds of stuff – like embedding photos, video is still down the road.
[Ed. Note - there is a complete "how to" guide recently published here: http://dissenter.firedoglake.com/occupy-coverage/activismkit/ . Sorry, should have put that in the earlier note.]
Think they should start every GA by saying something like “Shake hands with the person next to you, tell them your name and ask them if they are the local police or FBI infiltrator.” Whatever their answer, take their pic with your cell phone. It’s a way of reminding everyone that there are infiltrators as well have possibly having some record for future purposes.
not a bad idea.
Given many cops are on the banks payroll etc not sure they need to admit banks are doing the banks bidding, it is obvious.
Good for you. I could say that this technology is so primitive that I can’t figure it out, but the reality is that I post using multiple templates and I can’t always find the embed video button on different templates.
I was so proud of my late father who totally got on the computer bandwagon when I bought him a computer back in the late 1990′s. I learned a lot about how people learn technology and I reminded him that it’s not just your fault things are hard to learn, interface design is such an important factor in learning but the computer “priests” often assume things are “intuitive” that aren’t.
I worked with some of the developers of one of the Unix Graphical User Interface and it was often hilarious to listen to their assumptions about what people knew. Then we would do testing and find out that a lot of those assumptions were wrong. Some crappy designs we just take for granted even to this day.
Think about the way windows puts the shrink, expand and close buttons with in 1/4 of an inch of each other. Fine motor control is needed and it’s easy to miss. My dad used to say, “Ah crap, the windows disappeared!” and I figured out he missed the expand button and hit the minimize button.
sounding like a veteran there, ecahn….
Devious mind.
Thank you, Ed :-)
A “Devious mind”…
would be a terrible thing to waste.
But both can be false
damn! i love that idea!
great video and post, spocko! looking at what breitbart had to say, i discovered our very own lisa fithian is in new york with ows. that is superb. she is soooo good at protest, it just gives me another level of confidence in the strength of the occupation.
I held my nose and read the biggovt post…amazing how they can twist one thing into another, totally different, thing, isn’t it?
gw: Is Lisa Fithian known here by nom de clavier? (such as tejanarusa or greenwarrior, *g*)
You don’t want to read the comment on that blog. Here is an example:
“So the folks carrying around signs calling for mass murder, carrying around effigies of severed heads, calling for the expulsion of “Zionist Jews” — we’re supposed to believe these people are NOT capable of violence?”
You can’t reason with these people, they make up their own reasons for their hate.
Sickening.
While it is wise to be vigilant, going overboard with paranoia will just brand us and marginalize us. While it is obvious that these two individuals are cops. Were they breaking any laws or ethics by being there? If this information is presented to the media will it be beneficial to the cause? Or will it just make us appear incapable of dealing with trivial predictable behavior?
“Were they breaking any laws or ethics by being there?”
Idk, but stories like these provide an outlet for that type of discussion.
“presented to the media will it be beneficial to the cause?”
Doubtful, if by media you mean msm. For the people’s media I am going to go with absolutely yes.
“appear incapable of dealing with trivial predictable behavior”
Huh? How do you know the two peace officers were there just to observe? I’m not saying they weren’t. We deserve a police force that is transparent and serves the community. We know law enforcement does not have a clean record when it comes to dealing with civil disobedience. If police are going to participate/infiltrate, why shouldn’t the burden be placed on them to demonstrate good faith?
I don’t think this is as trivial a thing as you seem to suggest.
Cuomo was also funded by the Koch brothers during his election.
http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-10-07/gossip/27077419_1_tea-party-koch-industries-koch-and-cuomo
The video only shows to individuals in a undisclosed location. The video has no audio of what the two were saying. Far as we know they were off duty cops doing whatever they want. Or they could indeed be trying to instigate something. But we have no way on knowing the intent by watching an over dubbed video that was designed to incite us.
And yes infiltration is trivial because it is completely expected. The video above shows us possible suspects, good detective work yes. But what does it prove?
Good faith and trust are the main ingredients to peace. Should we pay attention to undercover cops, obviously yes. Should we make paranoia our rally call? No because paranoia is a tool to control people. There is simply many more useful things to do. The video above was designed to make us against the police. The police are part of the 99%. What about the officers that have gave their help and their support? Divide and conquer.
Personally I am in this for the long haul, I do not want this to turn into a 15 minutes of fame sort of thing. If we are not careful all of this could back fire and set us even further back.
Hmm. The techie in me wonders how hard it would be to set up a face recog database so that OWS protesters can quickly match faces of “supporters” to members of the PD as seen in uniform.
Of course, as soon as you do this, it will quickly become illegal to take pictures of police…
Thank you for your concern.
