It has been widely reported that Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president of Egypt and a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, has claimed new and extensive powers, doing so, it has been stated, in response to impasse of Egypt’s Second Constituent Assembly and to persistent street violence. An English language version of Morsi’s Constitutional Declaration can be found here. His subsequent explanation for his deed: “He told… [his followers] he was leading Egypt on a path to ‘freedom and democracy’ and was the guardian of stability.” We should interpret his actions while remembering that coups affirm neither democracy nor stability. They do, however, affirm the coercive power of the state.
Morsi’s auto-golpe will replace the rule of law with rule by decree and, to be sure, Egypt’s transition to democratic governance with a putatively limited dictatorship. Obviously, secularists and those groups who wish for or need social and political pluralism fear the instauration of a constituent dictatorship serving the interests of Egypt’s Islamists or the sectarian interests of the Freedom and Justice Party. Some have already taken their opposition to Morsi’s recent coup to the street. We should recall here that Egypt’s revolution originated in a divided society and that Morsi gained the Presidency with a thin victory margin in a runoff election. He has, at best, only weak popular support, although we might suspect that the recently purged Egyptian Armed Forces affirmed the November 22 coup. So far, the United States has only faintly criticized the coup.
Situations like this can end badly, as recent history has so often demonstrated.

As long as American Empire is throwing billions ( tens of billions ) of $$ around the ME and across southern, central and southeast Asia things that end badly will keep unreeling as thses billions of $$ equate to cause/effects that most often go awry with unforseen/uncharted outcomes. It is easy to believe ones own propaganda and in this WashingtonDC excels as it reloads American Militarsim – Imperisism -Corporatissm with round after round. The Military -Idustrial-Complex and its sibling American M-I-C long ago passed any flashing or steadily glowing yellow lights and now is running one red light after another.
What Tel Aviv and Cairo have become and now are is a product of know too little or know nothing American M-I-C — with the 2003 invasion of Iraq by Imperial WashingtonDC serving as Exhibit A.
On a side note speaking of 2003-2012 Iraq Debacle and what Obama has done or clearly intends to keep doing to shield G.W.Bush from any downward consequences ever touching G.W.Bush I saw this bit of news at Yahoo earlier today.
Jeb Bush is considering a 2016 WH run and is reviewing positions that would allow or greenlight a 2016 WH bid and run.
Bush – Obama – Bush … Bush shielded by Obama then Obama shielded by another Bush after 2016. Political/legal perfection.
Americans really need to let the Israelis,Egyptians,Syrians,Libyans,Yemenis,Afghans and Iraqis take care of their own politics and stop with the meddling and $$ diplomacy boomerangs.
Double down with not meddling and not doing American M-I-C $$ boomerang throws with China and Iran.
Americans need some serious political resets and clean outs at home.
Idea of a Bush – Obama – Bush WH gaming by UniParty becoming a good place to start the stop.

It’s always about the oil….
Is anyone surprised? Obama made this happen. He and Morsi are on the same side – the side of Islamic clerical fascism.
When he lectures Burma (or any other country) on an open society, he really means a society open to Islamist takeover. That’s what he meant when he lectured Mubarek. Morsi is the result. It’s no accident.
Obama is on the side of Islamic clerical fascism?
Wow, that’s one of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever seen posted on FDL. I’d expect that on Conservative Cave or Redstate, but not here.
Don’t you even remember how the Obama Administration acted during the first stages of the Egyptian Revolution? Or how the Israelis did? Basically, they didn’t know what the hell to do. They were quite happy with Mubarak, who was a willing tool of the American Empire and a tacit supporter of the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
The last thing the American government wanted was a popularly elected President of Egypt who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. I’m sure the Israelis weren’t exactly thrilled, either.
To imply that Morsi’s rise is somehow the result of some nefarious American plot is absurd.
Or, could it be that the Obama administration correctly evaluated the likely fate of the Mubarek regime, knew from past practice that Mubarek could not retire to the United States and accepted regime change in Egypt as a fait accompli?
Yep.
There is no reason to indulge in paranoid fantasizing. Reality is disturbing enough.
Thank you. Reality is indeed disturbing enough.
Gee, gosh, golly, who could have possibly imagined that an Egyptian ‘democratic’ election controlled by an Islamic military dictatorship which brought into office a card carrying member of the Islamic Brotherhood would do anything other than immediately inaugurate a radical Islamic- military dictatorship?
Has anyone looked around the Middle Eastern world and seen anything other (one or two exceptions noted) than a militant, Islamic dictatorship or monarchy?
Lemmings earn their sobriquet and surely are not born that way.
Hey, lemmings, the cliff is in that there yonder direction.
Get on your mark, get set, and you’re off and running.
The best of luck with your leap of faith!
Bedonk says it’s actually Glenn Greenwald’s fault. But he says that about practically everything, so perhaps I am mistaken about this particular event. I’m hoping he’ll butt in and clear things up about this person who has assumed dictatorial powers in whatever country we’re talking about.
Religious nutjobs don’t get along with others very well, I’ve noticed.
But that’s not what happened in Poland. Poland succeeded in its transition to a liberal democracy, and managed this despite the reactionary inclinations of Poland’s Catholic Church.
Monkey see. Monkey do.
Radical Islamic Dictatorship? Har har har. Paranoid hasba… er, bullshite.
