Now, every dollar to No On Prop 8 will be matched (up to one million dollars) by philanthropist Steve Bing and Equality California. Please dig deep this weekend to help defeat discrimination and bigotry in California.
Please donate right here to get your No On Prop 8 dollars matched 2-1.
Your doubled donation will help keep this great ad on the air in California. This ad works, by the way — uncommitted voters break 2-1 against Prop 8 after viewing this ad alongside Yes ads. So, whether or not this ad is your ideal ad, please believe this: it’s been tested. This ad works; your money won’t be wasted.
Here’s what Equality California says about their new ad:
The ad gives voice to the broad coalition of organizations and newspapers that oppose Prop. 8—from the Los Angeles Times and La Opinión to the League of Women Voters, the California Nurses Association and the California Teachers Association.
Won’t you please join this broad coalition of fair-minded Californians who don’t want discrimination written into our state’s Constitution?
Please help today – your donation between now and midnight Sunday will be doubled!

I’m in
Thanks, eg!
Me too. Nothing feels better than seeing my wee pittance work double-time!
Teddy,
This is fantastic! Where did you get this info: ” This ad works, by the way — uncommitted voters break 2-1 against Prop 8 after viewing this ad alongside Yes ads. So, whether or not this ad is your ideal ad, please believe this: it’s been tested”?
I believe it, but it helps when arguing against someone who says, “the people support this measure, and the pro-prop 8 advertising is simply bringing it to light.” Thanks!
The ads were focus-grouped among uncommitted voters, although I don’t have a link. But I think it’s important for folks to understand that the No On Prop 8 ads, while not exactly what we might prefer, do work. Some people like to pick apart every single ad that come out — it’s more important to donate now while your ad dollars will be matched!
I would certainly make a different ad, but I’m not the voter No On Prop 8 needs to reach.
Hey, whatever works! And, your point about the target audience is well-taken.
At least the information is true, as opposed to the Yes ads which are full of outright falsehoods.
Teddy,
Thank you sooooo much for keeping at this – I haven’t your energy but I do share your passion.
I’ve recommended and DUGG – you other firepups should do the same! Teddy and I thank you.
Teddy!
Dugg, recommended, lauded.
The “No on 8″ folks are playing this just right, and as this is a Constitutional issue, deserve our support.
Hey jacqrat!
Thanks for the rec and the Dugg!
Hey Teddy,
Many thanks for your vigilance on this. My plan was to donate this weekend as my budget would allow it, and now I see it will be matched.
Recommended, dugg and donated.
Some folks question “Why no gays in the ads?” but I think maybe the straightforward approach is best: don’t take away rights, California never goes backwards, fairness is right.
I know that I am not the audience for these ads — and I know that reaching uncommitted voters is a science that’s hard to understand from a strongly committed position.
Isn’t it great to know that every single dollar you donate will be matched this weekend?
Make Andy Hamilton sing like Andy Jackson!
I gave $10. I’d give more, but I’m unemployed.
People can also go to the No on 8 website and get information to do phone banking from the comfort of their homes, anywhere in the country.
This is critical. I hope people will give whatever they can, in whatever way they can – because if Prop Hate wins, the glbt rights movement will be sidetracked for decades.
Unfair.
Unnecessary.
Wrong.
Nice tag line to finish the ad! Nice response to the “be afraid! be afraid! be afraid!” from the other side.
It’s also a great ad. It distills the message down to where it should be, and any decent human being would agree with it.
Thank you, Ryan, for your donation. Your ten dollars will be twenty dollars! Isn’t that wonderful?
Good point about the other ways to contribute, too. Here’s the No On Prop 8 website.
If people can’t afford much money, maybe they can afford some time?
Thanks!
Note: I changed the post to make clearer that this million dollar match is dollar-for-dollar. If you donate ten dollars, Steve Bing and Equality California will match that, so your donation is doubled.
OT Glenn Greenwald had a post about the media meme that McCain is an honorable man despite the slimey, nasty nature of his campaign. A great illustration of this was delivered by Shields and Brooks on the NewsHour weekly roundup this evening.
Brooks praises Bush and Paulson’s “bold” moves in the bailout and “wonders” if Obama is too cautious. He says that Bush is the master of the big gesture. I would say that Bush is the master of the big fuckup just as Brooks is the master of the big BS.
Great ad. Saw a bumper sticker the other day that said “Restore marriage. Vote yes on 8″ – “restore”? They act as if this is going to break out like a big case of measles. So stupid.
Actually, I changed the post on the FDL front-page, but I can’t change the text here in Oxdown. Just so people understand, my description of this match as 2-1 isn’t correct; it is actually a dollar-for-dollar match. Still sweet, but I didn’t want people to misunderstand.
Just for everybody’s info, FL has one of these on the ballot too. maybe even more odious. Outlaws gay marriage and “the substantial equivalent tehreof.” Forget about even civil unions.
can i put up a link, Teddy or no? I don’t think it’ll pass.
I like the ad.
Of course, put up a link. We need to defeat hate wherever it appears.
AR has it’s own version as well… outlaws all unmarried folks from adopting. period.
I still think it will pass here, because folks just hear the anti gay foster parent meme and don’t know the details.
You sound pretty focused, as i imagine you are. Didn’t want to detract from that. But they’re saying thsi one is going to lose. it still might get a majority, though. In CA do you only need 50% + one to pass?

I’ve done my donation on prop 8, Teddy. I want to donate to whomever is running against Michelle Bachmann.
i think you’re right. i think there are people-who think about these things and say “That’s not fair” and would oppose it. But if they actually see two gay people so much as talking affectionately, they get uncomfortable.
I don’t think prop 8 will go the way of the great Salt Lake City. People couldn’t care less for the most part. I do hope that the pro-marriage folks get out the word on the economic benefits of gay marriage in this environment.
In CA do you only need 50% + one to pass?
Most props in CA need 2/3.
speaking of Bachmann… what the hell has happened to MN? I know they’ve always been …. well… mavericky. But a Repub governor, repub senator (hopefully not for long) and this whackjob bachmann. what up MN? I didn’t see her tonight but i’ve seen her before and she wasn’t very effective for McCain.
I gotta apologize, i really haven’t been following this because I assumed it would lose. is it going to lose?

This Prop (8) only needs 50% plus one to pass. To amend the state constitution. Unbelievable I know.
And on top of that, the state legislature needs a 2/3 majority to pass a budget…
More sarah Sez:
However, [Palin] added that Obama heard things from Wright “that most people would find a bit concerning,”
Um, did she mean disconcerting? What the hell does she mean? Dope.
wow. crazy. I’m told that it was like that in FL before I moved here and teh constitution was getting amended and un-amended and has all kinds of crap in it now. so they raised it to 60% to pass.
Crazy is right. Recently read that CA has over 500 amendments to its constitution currently on the books.
I’ve already given my limit to No on 8. I hope it’s not too late to bury it.
Ian is upstairs with another insightful Post on our economic meltdown!
Thanks TCU!
This is a 50% amendment.
Thank you Loo Hoo

Recommend we call the senior elected Democratic officials in California and request they hit the campaign trail and speak out against Prop 8 (as well as Prop 4 – Parental Notification, which is also in danger of passing):
Senator Feinstein – (202) 224-3553
Senator Boxer – (202) 224-3841
Lt Gov Garamendi – (916) 445-8994
Brown – Attorney General (916) 445-9555
Bowen – Secretary of State (916) 653-7244
Chiang – Comptroller (916) 445-2636
Lockyer – Treasurer (916) 653-2995
O’Connell – Superintendent of Public Instruction (916) 319-0800
Yee – Board of Equalization District 1 (916) 445-4081
Chu – Board of Equalization District 4 (916) 445-4154
See here for more information on statewide Democratic office holders in California and here for Senators Boxer and Feinstein.
And don’t forget to call your U. S. House Representative, State Senator, and Assembly Member. Ask them to speak out against 8, and 4 too.
Many of our leaders will want to pursue higher office in 2010. Support now will be remembered and repaid later.
