The official gays are angry now, and Joe Solmonese of the Human Rights Campaign has written a letter to the President-Elect asking him to reconsider his horrible decision to have Pastor Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his Inaugural Ceremony.
Here’s the letter from Joe to Barack:
Dear President-elect Obama –
Let me get right to the point. Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans. Our loss in California over the passage of Proposition 8 which stripped loving, committed same-sex couples of their given legal right to marry is the greatest loss our community has faced in 40 years. And by inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table.
Rick Warren has not sat on the sidelines in the fight for basic equality and fairness. In fact, Rev. Warren spoke out vocally in support of Prop 8 in California saying, “there is no need to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2 percent of our population … This is not a political issue — it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about." Furthermore, he continues to misrepresent marriage equality as silencing his religious views. This was a lie during the battle over Proposition 8, and it’s a lie today.
Rev. Warren cannot name a single theological issue that he and vehemently, anti-gay theologian James Dobson disagree on. Rev. Warren is not a moderate pastor who is trying to bring all sides together. Instead, Rev. Warren has often played the role of general in the cultural war waged against LGBT Americans, many of whom also share a strong tradition of religion and faith.
We have been moved by your calls to religious leaders to own up to the homophobia and racism that has stood in the way of combating HIV and AIDS in this country. And that you have publicly called on religious leaders to open their hearts to their LGBT family members, neighbors and friends.
But in this case, we feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination. Only when Rev. Warren and others support basic legislative protections for LGBT Americans can we believe their claim that they are not four-square against our rights and dignity. In that light, we urge you to reconsider this announcement.
Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese
President
Human Rights Campaign

me: a genuine blow to ALL Americans
Our fucking representative democracy isn’t even good enough to be a farce anymore. It’s just a big fucking lie.
I trust that Joe and HRC will be emailing a petition for us to sign. I hope we can inundate the President elect with the response of all Americans to this horrid decision.
hey teddy–
here is the contact page to send a letter to tell them to change their plans to have Pastor Warren anywhere near this Inaugural.

my letter could have been better, I hate those little boxes, but didn’t go to a text page. oh well. at least I wrote one.
I hope many many pups send one off immediately. Let’s get the outrage we feel about this across to them.
Dear President-Elect Obama;
Whomever made the decision for Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the Benediction at your Inaugural, and whomever suggested it, should be fired. Reverend Warren most certainly does not qualify as someone who exemplifies the teachings of Jesus and the actions of a man of God.
I can name at least 10 ordained women and men who espouse a level of excellence who should have been given the honor of delivering the Benediction on the historic day of your Inauguration. A myriad of choices, yet you chose the most offensive one besides James Dobson. And the one out of San Antonio, Hagee.
Surprisingly, I would rather hear the pastor at The Wasilla Bible Church; I listened to his sermon last Sunday after the fire and it is exactly what people should be hearing every Sunday. Unconditional Love. That is what he preached after having his church destroyed. You should listen to that sermon. I even wrote to him to compliment him.
Pastor Rick is not someone I would look to for insight or leadership, after seeing and hearing him telling others that love is conditional, who creates division and calls it being a leader. He is an appalling human being for the hate he creates and then hiding behind his other ‘works’ to ‘call it even’. That is not the conduct of a man of God, at least that is not what I was taught, especially coming from a preacher. i’ve noticed that he sounds great in interviews, but take a look at what he says in public, what he is really saying in front of his congregation, and news outlets. It is atrocious that he gets away with it.
Whom should you have asked instead, if you wanted a fundamentalist? Joyce Meyer. At least in the middle of her interpretations of the Bible she is also teaching people tolerance, and how to be fine human beings. To be responsible for what you create in others by being tolerant and loving to all, no matter your creed or religion. Or lifestyle.
I am dismayed that you would give such an honor to such a despicable person.
I spent countless hours working during your campaign, and I have to say, I wish I could take those hours back. I cannot believe you would do such a thing, yet you did. I truly don’t understand how this has happened.
Out of all of the people from which you had to choose, you chose the one who is the wolf in sheep’s clothing. I don’t think you realize how offended people are by this choice. If you think more will be offended if you change it, you are wrong.
I hope you change your decision about this.
Sincerely,
Methodist, and heterosexual, in case you wondered.
Obama’s selection of this bigot is an insult not only to the LGBT community but to all truly Christian pastors in the United States. Why not select a true Christian rathar than a hypocrite?

i posted a diary about reverend joseph lowery who is doing the Benediction. I think in order to let him speak, obama had invite warren.
not going to be an even match. at all. heh.
You have been Sister Souljahed!
I wonder how Obama would feel about a preacher speaking out in support of another bible issue getting on the ballot that God has spoken in support for, the right to own slaves?
We are at a post Bible morality we can figure things out for ourselves. The Bible is wrong.!
Just how is Obama being inclusive and forgiving by inviting the other side who wants to take away supporters of Obama’s rights?
Has Obama in his quest to be liked to Assimilate given up his old friends to run with the unpopular 30%er crowd?
Ya Dance with the one that Brung ya as the old saying goes.
