Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, makes the extraordinary claim that Mitt Romney "has acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith."
Might this indicate the beginning of a schism in the Prop 8 coalition? After all, the Prophet said Mormons are Christians, and have always been so:
Are Mormons Christian? This article explains why Mormons are Christians which is one of the most common accusations that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contend with.
Answer: Yes, Mormons are Christians.
Speaking on this topic, President Ezra Taft Benson stated:
"The question is sometimes asked, Are Mormons Christians? We declare the divinity of Jesus Christ. We look to Him as the only source of our salvation. We strive to live His teachings, and we look forward to the time when He shall come again on this earth to rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
Does Mitt Romney know that James Dobson’s henchman says "Mitt Romney has acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith?" Why is Focus on the Family attacking Mitt Romney and Mormons after their successful alliance to pass Prop 8 in California?

Dugg and recommended, Teddy
an intriguing issue. let’s hope they fight among themselves over this.
Ah, the Chimpy card:
The question is sometimes asked, “Is our religious really a religious?”
Dugg, Teddy!
So, this matters… how? They’re just fundies with different rituals (and possibly more money).
if Mormons are Christians then so are Muslims, both have Christ as an important figure yet neither pray to him.
Um, perris — Mormons have Christ in the actual name of their church which is more than many fundie churches do….
tiz a trick teddy, like “the patriot act” nothing at all to do with patriotism
in fact mormons think everyone is a god, for various wolrds, they believe satan is Christs brother as well
paganism, not that paganism is a bad thing but it certainly is to the fundy Christians
But did Mitt Romney say so?
teh pretty good explanation of mormon in a cartoon
ps, that cartoon is banned by the mormon church so I guess it’s not representative of how they want to present their belief
if Mormons are Christians then so are Muslims, both have Christ as an important figure yet neither pray to him.
Ironically, Mormonism is the only ‘major faith’ Baha’is do not recognize… Amazing, considering we embrace all of Abraham’s sons…
tutle, could you explain this?
I never heard the expression “baha”
oops, hand are cold, I meant tuttle
Not, ‘baha’… Baha’i…
Whereas, God, has sent successive ’sons’ throughout history, from Abraham to Zoroaster, etc… including Jesus, Mohammad, and lastly with Baha’u’llah…! ;-)
Basically, we evolved…! ;-)
aha, I know I am one of gods children so I don’t think there is a “lastly” until the earth stands still
You mean Baha’i isn’t the peninsula where they have the 1000 mile desert race?
‘Evolved’?
Pretty optimistic POV hoss . . . ROTFLMAO!!!!
I think there’s evidence religon is one reason we HAVEN’T fully evolved within our capacity as humans . . . . along with the garnering of power and control of others, which is any religon’s or leaders purpose. *G*
That shit holds us back and HAS held us back, for a long, long time. *SMILE*
it’s an inter-league game with these fuckwits — xianist bibliolators (sola scriptura hardcores) see the mormons as addin’ on to the Ollie Bibble (read the last verses of the last book — revelation –of the new testicle: a curse to any who would add on to the word a’duh lord…you’ll roast joseph smith if you go addin’ on with your gold plate bullshit.)
so the book of mormon, the gold plates, all that crapola breaks the law of the very perfect word of god… and so these later day dudes are none of the real flock of jeebus. period. end of story.
in the same fashion, the muslims are johnny-come-latelies with their Koran, and it too is a big no-no of those who worship of the book and by the book — the only book, to wit: the jewish bible and the xian bible.
and they dont allow no channeling by mohammad or joey smith to cut one iota of slack in the holy book they revere more than life itself (well maybe yours and mine).
their book-bound jeebus aint got that big a love. “no muslims and mormons allowed” is scrawled right across the clubhouse door — which is kinda funny.
the the muslims and the mormons hate girls justas much as the xianist dudes do… you’d think… aw fuck it.
No not if the Christians say that Mormons are not Christians. Electricians can make you take tests and charge fees before you become a Union electrician.
Nuns don’t have to accept men into their club.
Groups can define their own members there is no affirmative action law strong enough to make Christians accept Mormons.
In fact I am surprised the Christian churches have not sued the Mormons for claiming to be a Christian church there are copy right issues to the term Christian Church which must be defended now or ANYBODY could use the term.
Oh wait Anybody is using it already.
“Are Mormons Christians?”
Is this a reprint from a RELIG412: Comparative Religions exam?
When my family was in SLC in 1971 we visited Temple Square. During a propaganda leg of the tour, I noticed a big whoppin’ statue of Jeebus. It would have made a boffo dash accessory for Paul Bunyan’s car.
Ah never worry bout storms or freezes
Long as ah got my plastic jesus
Ridin on the dashboard of my car.
This is the one I want on my dashboard.
fine piece of dash flesh..
I think he’s been giving my dashboard hula girl the eye…
For shame. That’s heresy.
Lust In The Dust Meets Must On The Dash?
Cue Meatloaf, Martha and The Tubes . . .
Dashboard Lights to Don’t Touch Me There . . .
Did anyone read that Val Diamond, bless her heart, has done Beach Blankey for 30 years now? *G*
Yup.
On reflection, blasphemy is a better description.
I stand corrected.
If Dobson says Mormons are not Christians this is going to throw the “base” into a tizzy. Oh, well, there’s always Sarah in 4 years. Mitt may have a difficult time.
I thought Mitt’s big speech about religion during the 2008 campaign (does anybody remember that?) was all about alleviating the fundies’ concerns that he wasn’t a Christian.
Now the Dobsonites are quoting him saying Mormonism isn’t Christianity.
It’s a schism!
Whole new reason to pull up a chair: this I gotta see.
Popcorn?
ianam
BUT
from what I understand, all mankind are children of god, saying christ is a child of god is saying nothing
christ was given this world to command and the rest of us gather round to act like christ so we can have our own stuff
those who sided with christ are white, those who sided with his brother are in the underworld, those who couldn’t decide are “not white”
that’s my understanding in a nutshell
I don’t recall ever seeing a Christian depiction of Jesus in magic underwear. I don’t recall so much as a debate among Christians about the garden of Eden being in Missouri.
But I don’t follow these things in great detail.
As Atrios is fond of pointing out, once religion takes hold in our political process the fighting will begin about which version of God worshipping is the right one. Or, as Monty Python put it, The Judean People’s Front is not the People’s Front of Judea.
What’s all this fuss?
Don’t you have a New Year’s Eve Party to go to?
If the No On Prop 8 people had a better campaign, Teddy’s question would be moot.
For what it’s worth, I’ve heard non-Mormons say they don’t consider Mormons to be Christians.
I don’t really care.
But I do wonder What’s all this fuss here about?
I hope any Mormons attending the inauguration next month will make time to shlep on over to the leather fetishists convention.
the magic underwear tour….
The magic underwear would be a bold fashion statement but I think they could pull it off.
Well I think a more important question is how do Mormons and their very closed self-serving Good Old Boys system and tentacles of influence shape politics and policy? Living in the intermtn West, once you start tuning into it – the power and influences of Mormons is inescapable. Not just Utah, but also a big part of what makes Idaho red, and rural areas in places like NV so anti-government. I was reading one of the other posts here about Harry Reid doing what he does best -selling out Democrats. It is perfectly understandable to me – his first allegiance is to the Church, and it is a world away from being aligned with the Democratic party.
Oh for crying out loud, who gives a shit what they or anyone else worships?
Keep the eye on the goal, don’t let the religon sidetrack your goals TeddyP.
You plate’s full . . . no need to pile up unnecessary baggage.
Like Islam with the Shia and Sunn spliti, like First and Second Testaments with THAT split that manages to draw in Jews, Christians, Catholics and about a hundred other offshoots, and Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues . . . dont’ put on any fancy airs down on Rue Morgue Avenue.
Happy New Year Teddy and all the LGBT Community and may Prop 8 and all who support it die like the dinosaurs they are from your meteor. *G*
not a question of what you worship it’s a question of who you are coddled to, romeny is coddled to the christian right and he has to face what they preach, teach, believe even though it is the antithesis of what he believes
Romney will not be relevant (except for a minority few) for the forseeable future of his years left on the planet.
Neither will most RepugLiCans.
They are dust.
Why waste time on them or their religious postulations when they are marginalized? Other than to keep them marginalized, that is . . *G*
power corrupts, absolute power stupidifies, we are not immune
our critters WILL corrupt themselves, obama has corrupted himself already, with fisa, with the bailout for bush’s banking buddies and with liarman
romney won’t be a factor because the fundies will throw him to the lions, our job is to educate
Yer gettin real, real close to my POV, real close . . . almost reeled me in there . . . nice work, as always. *G*
And may I extend to you and many, many other FDL’ers a laurel and hearty handshake for the educatin process in progress . . . . it does indeed lift us all higher to the heaven of our own callling . . *G*
they are not only america’s enemies they are their own enemies, they have power because the republicans gave them power now they are coddled to them, the base is their only hope and they have become their only voters
HOWEVER
when, (and it is when not if) the democrats corrupt themselves there will be a populist among them who WILL win votes and voters, mine for one I might add, I am not tied to this party I am tied to progressive strategium, I don’t care which party that strategium comes from
in the mean time, romney is a corporatist and he must not get play, this is why we pit the fundies against him
I don’t think WE pit anyone against anyone.
If yer referrin to the blogosphere, alt media, international media, and sources of info other than the US MSM, then yes, I think WE are reshaping not only the INFLUENCE of things, but the actual dialogue of reality.
However, I’d posit that the lack of gain by ‘he masses’ during their time of worship at the alter of NeoCons, PNAC, ReThugLicans, Christian Fundie’s, the MIC and corp biz and their war machine is more likely the reason anything has been reshaped.
The masses got hammered, and now they is pissed and they are realizing their own ‘gods’ sold them out, be it the one’s in the pulpit in church on Sunday morning, or in their voter ballots or in their investment planning. *G*
Like BustedKnuckles is recently fond of saying, the reich wing and their media mouthpieces are getting handed a plate full of blowback full of their excrement they’ve poured out for 40 years and more. (loosely quoted, Busted, don’t hate me for blogwhorin ya!)
We’re likely talking the same things, and we likely agree on much . . . but I enjoy it being nice to belabor the niceties of things sometimes, hope ya don’t mind if I do . . . ALWAYS love your comments and posts, so here’s a HatTip Of Respect! *G*
happy new year all, going out, see all next year
Happy New Year, perris. Have a joyous and safe celebration.
happy new year, perris – have fun and live to tell of it!
Staying in, but now going elsewhere.
As Ratfood said at #48, to all Pups . . . and back at ya, too, Ratfood. *G*
Thanks, same to you. Bob and I are also staying in. Bit of a tradition in these parts.
What is a Christian? Jesus the Christ wasn’t one. Christianity, in all of its many forms, follows the teachings of Saul/Paul. It does not follow the teachings of Jesus. Jesus was a Jew. Saul was a Jew killer. Christianity today follows the Old Testament history of the Jewish people. That is why we have so many right evangelicals using it to justify killing in the name of God. Lots of cases of genocide in the Old Testament. Genocide that God is always said to order and/or approve of. The winners always write the history of the world.
A whole bunch of White House war criminals are trying to rewrite history right now. Rampant lying in the age of videos that quickly expose their lies, and they keep doing it anyways. Imagine how easy it was to tell people what to believe when the majority of people were totally illiterate?
Christianity would be a religion of peace, love, justice, equality, and freedom for all, if Jesus’s ministry was preached in churches. Not the wanton death and destruction of the Old Testament. The odds of that occurring any time soon, is likely zero. The Religious Industrial Complex is as insidious as the Military Industrial Complex. The combination of the two that is happening now is evil and is not Christian. Or maybe it is Christian? It seems to be what the majority of evangelicals are preaching in the 21st century; kill, kill, and kill some more. All in the name of God of course.
For better or worse, religion accurately reflects the values of the individuals who practice it. Compassion and benevolence in some cases, greed and corruption in others.
Yes..since the beginning of humanity..It is the side effect of that free will thingie!
Happy New Year to you.
Happy New Year to all who read here.
Very well said *s*
Thank you..
You rock, by the way!
Thanks…two nice comments so close together from people I enjoy reading..smiling, blushing…
Perris. You often share brilliant insights – much appreciated here.
Wishing us all a very good new year.
And a splendid new year to you and everyone, SunnyNobility.
The thing about the Christian right – there is diversity in their various weird slants on things religious. In the Mormon Church, that is just not the case. You can’t pick up and go to a different Mormon Church really – you are stuck with the Stake, Ward, Tabernacle where you live. Your only choice is to go off the deep end and back into 1800s to the FLDS world. And the same doctrine comes identically down from the same group of old (living) men and the geriatric Prophet who heads it all. There is no diversity in the blind mindlessness that is Mormonia.
I’ll leave now to read my 15th book of the day. Got to break the Bush-Rove record by year end.
Boy in all seriousness the fundies are heading for a huge collision. Pope John Paul managed to paper over the differences with just sheer force of personality but Benedict is making it clear that there is only One True Faith and that when it comes down to it he is the Decider.
Religious conservatives have three major legs to their stool and each claims to know the source of Irerrancy. For Mormons it is the Prophet, for Catholics it is the Pope, for Southern Baptists it is the Book. That all three have Jesus somewhere near the center of their belief system doesn’t eliminate the deep divisions here. Jews believe they are the Chosen People who alone have a Covenant with Y*HW*H. Muslims believe deeply that ‘There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet. Southern Baptists believe there is no route to Heaven that is not guided by a personal commitment to and submission to Jesus. While Catholics believe that you can pray to the Saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary for some intercession on that path. And as long as all these faiths continue to CAPITALIZE everything all the Interfaith Councils in the world are not going to break the logjam which originates from the concept “I am going to heaven, you are going to hell”.
Dobson and Romney and Donohue can all appear on TV and smile and wave and shake hands for the cameras. But in the End they have very, very different ideas about the Highway to Heaven. “I say potato, you say potatoe, lets call the whole thing off” is my prediction for the theme song of the fundamentalist movement over the next few years. Absent the cynical, secular leadership of the Gingrich/Rove folk who kept everyone on the same page for the purpose of maintaining political power there is NOTHING that ties these groups together. (Except an unswerving commitment to patriarchy and control over women’s sexuality. But then that is something they share with plenty of other reactionary faiths/cultures).
Mormons can and do call themselves Christians. Christian Scientists call themselves Christians. Heck most Unitarians probably consider themselves at least nominally Christian. Well Pope Benedict doesn’t agree. I don’t know whether 2009 is going to be the year of the big breakup but it is coming sooner or later. Because world views that variously rely on Prophet, Pope, or Book as the source of big-t Truth are fundamentally (sic) incompatable.
not true
first of all, Judaism is not one religion at all, there are legions of separate beliefs and interpretations and customs
for the most part, most sects believe Jews believe they are the chosen people, they have no idea what this choice is for and they have no doubt g-d chose other people as well, they believe they have a covenant with g-d but they also know they don’t speak for g-d and g-d can have as many covenants as he chooses, he is g-d after all
in addition the Jews do not believe they have a lock on who does or does not “live” past life and they are not even allowed to peristyles, they believe g-d chooses not by religion but by how you lead your life
and of course there are extremists in Judaism as all religions have their nuts
If you claim to be something, yet no one else agrees, are you real? really?
link please.
I don’t care if Mormons are Christians, a cult, an offshoot of Zeus worshippers, or figure skaters.
They’re all nuts. Except for the figure skaters. :)
Why does anyone cae what other religions think of their religion?
Regardless of whatever Romney may have said, he is a member and not a spokesperson for the Church. Do the Latter-day Saints (Mormons is just a nickname) consider Jesus Christ to be their Savior and the only one that can save people? Yes. Do the LDS consider themselves to be Christians? Yes. Are there differences between the LDS and other Christians? Certainly, since all Christian churches differ from one another in their doctrine. One difference is that the LDS do not believe God the Father and Jesus Christ are one person. We also believe that the Holy Ghost is a separate person. A perfect example of where all three members of the Godhead are clearly shown is when Christ was baptized. Look at Mathew 3:16-17. “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
