Tim Kaine epitomizes the Democratic Party’s two-faced approach to LGBT rights. Barack Obama’s choice to head our party speaks volumes about his own double standard on LGBT civil rights.
Barack Obama’s tapped Tim Kaine to run the Democratic National Committee, which is sorta good and sorta bad for the gay community as Kaine was the only candidate who responded to the Washington Blade’s 2005 request for Virginia Governor’s candidates to answer questions about gay issues (and said all sorts of nice things),but then once Governor, he signed the Marshall-Newman Amendment, which defines marriage in Virginia as being between a man and a woman, even though he had previously opposed it.
So, Tim Kaine is polite and nice to gays, but lacks the political fortitude to stand-up to anti-gay measures; he really is the perfect person to run the DNC.
"Polite and nice" we can get as members of the Log Cabin Republicans. LGBTs should hold our Democratic officeholders to a higher standard than the Log Cabin gets from John McCain. The Log Cabin boys called John McCain the most gay-friendly presidential nominee of their party in its history.
And, John McCain was gay-friendlier than Tim Kaine. We’ve known about Tim Kaine’s anti-gay stance for a long time, at least since he was tapped to give his lackluster SOTU response.
Do you want to know if Tim Kaine still opposes civil unions for LGBT couples? Do you want to know if Tim Kaine deserves your support as DNC chair?
You can ask Tim Kaine a question right here.
My question: As a gay Democrat I shouldn’t even be able to have a civil union, right? So tell me why I should support you as DNC chair, Governor.

Digg is Open!
Thanks Teddy. I’m going ask Tim right now. Dugg and recommended.
Are actually going backwards with DNC chairs? Howard Dean signed the first civil union bill in the nation as Governor of Vermont. Tim Kaine opposes civil unions. This is not progress!
It does seem that way. It would be fitting though if during his stint as DNC DOMA get repealed.
Having been the victims of hate politics and divisiveness for eight long years of Bush/CheneyCo, LGBT Americans have a long list of overdue accomplishments: repeal of DOMA and DADT, enactment of a fully inclusive iENDA, passage of the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill, and inclusion of LGBTs in the federal civil rights laws.
Whether an anti-gay DNC chair will help with this huge agenda remains to be seen.
Thanks Teddy, I’m kinda baffled by this pick myself, for this and more.
(speaking of lbgt civil rights, don’t forget MM’s call to action)
It’s a puzzle.
And, yes, thanks to MM for the 1 Million Strong March to Repeal DOMA — tomorrow!
Thank you for pointing this out, Teddy. As for me, I have not yet removed my black “Where have you gone, Howard?” mourning arm band.
It’s no puzzle, bro! It’s a direct repudiation of the Progressive arm of the Party, for any of us who were too dense to understand it before! Jim Jones, for Christ sakes! But what do I know? But damn sure seems the wind blow now, doesn’t it?
I’m aghast, but not surprised that damn near every elected official in this Country endorsed killing those Palestinians-Israel Forever, Baby! Proportionality be damned. Any excuse is better than none I suppose. The people’s voice doesn’t make a whit’s difference anywhere now.
