Listen carefully — I think they like us!
In other No-on-1 and Approve-Ref-71 news, the White House issued a statement in response to the Advocate’s Kerry Eleveld today, reiterating President Obama’s opposition to anti-gay referenda:
In response to an inquiry from The Advocate, the White House issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s position on same-sex relationship recognition voter referenda in Maine and Washington.
“The President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same-sex couples, and as he said at the Human Rights Campaign dinner, he believes ‘strongly in stopping laws designed to take rights away.’ Also at the dinner, he said he supports, ‘ensuring that committed gay couples have the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple in this country.’”
Maine’s Question 1 asks voters whether to overturn a law that legalized same-sex marriage earlier this year; Washington’s Referendum 71 asks voters to affirm or repeal a law passed earlier this year that expands domestic-partnership rights for same-sex couples and some senior couples. Voters in both states will weigh in on the measures November 3.

This is really cool, so glad it was successful! And a shoutout! Too kind.
It’s really fun to see the real people working on the project in Maine.
Totally. I had the pleasure of meeting Jesse Connolly months ago in DC. He was down pitching some bloggers on the campaign. I’m glad we came through for him.
Gee, I guess I forgot the strong stance Obama took in opposition to Prop 8.
Oh well, better late than never.
If Maine voters defeat this measure it will establish a great precedent.
The forces of bigotry are actually 30-for-30, at the ballot box, if you disregard the momentary lapse into non-bigotry of Arizona voters which they “corrected” the following year. So defeating this one is very important — if Maine Equality wins, the forces of light will have broken our opponents’ very long ballot-box streak.
We need a ballot-box win for equality to break their spirit and funding.
Obama’s statement, while on Friday and in response to a question, is important. He remains popular in both Maine and Washington state.
