Despite Bart Stupak’s July letter announcing his (and eighteen co-signers’) intent to submit an amendment to health care reform further restricting American women’s reproductive rights, Village insider Ellen Malcolm waited until TODAY to sound the alarm, while list-building and fundraising on a purported petition to Harry Reid to "Stop Stupak." Bart Stupak bragged about "taking down the rule" back in July, regarding another bill but also about abortion. Liberal outlets support the "eleventh-hour" framing of Stupak-Pitts so convenient to Veal Pen occupants.
Ellen Malcolm’s cynical email amounts to political malpractice: writing to EMILY’s List large list, asking for money and petition-signing to Harry Reid, when everyone who understands Capitol Hill knows the time to start fighting Stupak-Pitts was when it was announced in July, not now after it has passed the House and can only be stopped in the Senate. "We’ll fix it in conference" is a fools errand for progressives.
And Ellen Malcolm, as head of a long-time Washington institution, should know this.
But three-alarm fundraising and list-building can only be accomplished when women’s rights have actually been put on the chopping block. It wouldn’t suit EMILY’s list, or any other women’s rights Veal Pen denizens, to try to actually stop Stupak back when it mattered and could be headed off completely — much better for any organization’s visibility to let the issue come to a full boil.
Here’s Ms Malcolm’s email today:
Women’s rights are on the line, and we need your help. Right. Now.
I believe you and I have something in common: Last year, we both worked to elect progressive women candidates dedicated to making change. And now, their work in Washington is under attack.
When the House passed the health care reform bill, the legislation included the Stupak/Pitts Amendment, which would deny millions of women access to safe, affordable reproductive health care. It would prohibit millions of women from getting coverage for abortion in their health insurance, even if they pay for it themselves!
This amendment goes further than any previous federal law to restrict access to abortion — and flies in the face of an important principle of health care reform: that no one would lose benefits they already have.
EMILY’s List helped elect pro-choice Democratic women who are working to ensure this amendment does not pass. But our women in Congress need our support to make that happen.
Every single one of us needs to speak out in opposition to this amendment — and, with deals being cut left and right in the Senate right now, we must act immediately.
Add your name to the petition at STOPSTUPAK.com today and tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that the Senate bill must not include new restrictions on a woman’s ability to get coverage for abortion in her insurance plan.
The health care bill would make significant progress for women — ending gender inequalities in health care costs, halting discriminatory practices such as treating domestic violence as a "pre-existing condition," and making coverage more affordable for American families. That’s why it’s so crucial this bill not include a provision that would set women back.
Every EMILY’s List woman in the House voted against the Stupak/Pitts Amendment. And we know our candidates in the Senate will also fight tooth and nail to prevent this new restriction on women’s rights. They are the firewall against any new restrictions on a woman’s right to choose, but they need our voices to join with theirs if we are going to win this battle.
Sign the petition today and send a message loud and clear to Congress: this amendment must be removed before this legislation is enacted into law.
Sign the petition at STOPSTUPAK.com right now to take action against this dangerous restriction on women’s reproductive rights.
There’s no point in passing a health care reform bill that makes women less healthy, less safe and less able to exercise their constitutional rights — and that’s why we must join together today to prevent that from happening.
Warmest regards,
Ellen MalcolmEllen R. Malcolm

Here’s my response (since this seemed like such a newly arrived EMERGENCY to Ms Malcolm, I used ALL CAPS and lotsa punctuation!!!):
WHY DIDN’T YOU START THIS EFFORT BACK IN JULY WHEN STUPAK ANNOUNCED HIS INTENT???
WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE — AFTER THE HOUSE HAS ALREADY PASSED THIS ABOMINATION — IS POLITICAL MALPRACTICE, UNLESS YOU INTENDED ALL ALONG TO USE HIS AMENDMENT AS A FUNDRAISING VEHICLE FOR YOURSELVES!!!
SHAME ON YOU FOR BEING IN DEECEE AND PRETENDING NOT TO KNOW HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED!!!
YOU SHOULD RESIGN.

Really, what is the point of having these insider institutions attending all the fancy cocktail parties in Washington if they won’t use their insider knowledge and money to make an impact before danger actually arrives? Letting this issue get to this point is idiotic. This could have been, and should have been, resolved long before the last week of getting Health Care Reform out of the Rules Committee.
I can see this from far away on the opposite coast; why can’t our national advocacy organizations and their longtime leaders?
My phrase of choice is “willfully obtuse.” They don’t want to see it so they don’t until it is absolutely necessary. Even then, they just take the minimum effort (that usually being as you note, the request for more donations so they can continue to be obtuse).
Today I happily took myself off of their email list. Good riddance.
P.S. As a former (due to redistricting) constituent who volunteered in her first campaign in 1986,
all I can say to Louise Slaughter is, What were you not thinking?
I understood this decision to have been made above Chair Slaughter’s paygrade. I thought the Speaker was responsible for the breakdown of the Capps compromise. But I could be wrong.
Doesn’t Louise run Rules pretty much the way Nancy says to?
I, and my neighbors in NY-28, wouldn’t know because
Louise has turned into something of a stranger since becoming management.
Ha!
Welcome to the club. At least your ‘critter presumably still votes; Nancy hardly ever does anymore.
Heh. As an example of how obtuse the org is, I was never on its email list. Also, despite several detailed emails to Hillary, including the tag that we are 3 years apart at the same college, she never put me on her email list. I’m not sure that females, as a gender, are mentally inferior to males, but the evidence is accumulating.
I deleted it. I’m not actually signed up for their list, so clearly someone else is passing around theirs.
And I just opted out of their future mailings. I think they’re turning into another fundraising-off-issues lobbying group, just like NARAL.
As a senior, formerly professional, woman, let me reveal my great disappointment with all organizations that purported to foster the kinds of gender issues I care about. /spit
No wonder Toby Zeigler made fun of their name.
I think that if there are no abortions in the Health INSURANCE reform, not to be confused with Health Care Reform, there should be no vasectomies allowed either.
Those sperm are Human Life!!! How can we possibly allow either abortion or vasectomies?
After all, Every Sperm Is Sacred
That is the best! I watched it when you shared it earlier. Thanks!
I might get deleted for this but….
As secomd part of the ‘Coathanger’ campaign. there could be a sperm ‘presentation’. Hand out condoms filled with… soap?….for every one who threatens to vote for the amendment. Call it Sperm for Stupack; let my uterus go.
I wonder how much money it would take to get Stupak to do this?
He’s obviously for sale, so I think it’s just a matter of price…. :)
Stupak’s a C-Street guy. His price is not money, but illicit sex, preferably homosexual.
If he pulled that condom trick in a gay bar, he could have any homo he wanted.
Trust me on this one.
I have no reason to doubt you. *g*
teh Gays™ get to make all the good jokes.
If I tried that, it would be ass-kicking time.
“Straight-Man’s Burden”

“Straight man’s burden” and “sigh” in the same comment?!?!
LOL!
You just beat me by fekking MILES, hunny!

Many of my friends are gay. One is even gonna roast the organic turkey ($7/pound for a 15-20 pound turkey) I’m bringing for Tday.
Sick puppy!
*hands Kelly a cold one*

That might not be a good idea. I don’t think Jean Somebodyson in Anytown, USA would get it.
If the veal pen was doing their nominal JOBS, you know, advocatring their issues and stuff, they might have gotten as good of results as Roche/Genentech did.
That would be, erm, srong advocacy.
Want to know where the $1.4 million a day being spent to kill HCR is going? On things like that.
‘zactly.
My point is industry is successful at getting their message out, but the veal pen is not. They both have constituents they lobby for, only in the case of the veal pen, they simply do not manage to get the message out.
Why bother funding them?
Yeah, and the messaging was delivered inside suitcases full of unmarked bills.
*G*
What is lost, while these groups feather their own nests, is that reclaiming the lost ground is triply difficult.
But they are only ruined lives and befouled public policy – what are those compared to shrimp cocktail and martinis, chauffeur-driven Towncars, and of course, the lecture circuit?
The rewards for selling out are so great, and the rewards for fighting the good fight so elusive. So what so you expect?
Oh boy. Republican critters have gone bat shit:
The Rs were also shocked to discover that the public is mad that they voted against Franken’s anti-rape amendment.
Talk about clueless and utterly programmed.
You guys sound like my wife complaining about all the breast cancer awareness crap she gets swamped with at work and by friends and family. To her, all of those groups seem to be about fundraising for the sake of fundraising, and not much else. Progressive groups seem to be the same way, especially in that they seem to want to collect money so that they have power and influence, but then never seem to actually use any of it for anything except saying that they have tons of members and raise tons of money.
I don’t know about the internal politics involved in these groups, but I always get the feeling that they are composed of rich white people who join and run these groups to feel better about being rich and spoiled, but don’t have any real interest in changing things for the better.
nice
Oh you sound so much like my father (1903-1992), who always complained that the people who worked against poverty, like welfare workers, never wanted it to be diminished, otherwise their jobs would disappear.
Speaking of cancer awareness (apparently women are unaware that cancer and breasts exist), october was also domestic violence awareness month.
Instead of NFL players wearing pink cleats maybe they could talk to their impressionable male audience about DV. They have plenty of experience in that area.
Its just good PR for a bunch of corporations for doing nothing. I’m sure Susan Komen execs got some free tickets out of it, though.
So in statistics, there are Type I and Type II errors. One is rejecting a true hypothesis and the other is accepting a false hypothesis (I forget which is which, but wiki probably can straighten it out). From current news stories, the probability of being falsely diagnosed with breast cancer or prostate cancer is quite high, making the “tests” of dubious value.
I used to regularly give to Emily’s List, but stopped many years ago when they started raising money women that were more concerned with their stature in the club than working on women’s issues. Emily’s list has been a sham for a long time as far I can tell.
As I said in another thread. The DC insiders first priority is to take care of each other, regardless of party.
THEY KNEW. Didn’t you notice how the Democrats paraded all of the women congresspersons before the voting began that day? All of them lined up to “share” how this health bill would be good for women. True. NOW WHY DO THAT UNLESS YOU ARE COVERING YOUR ___ because you know that STUPAK’s (Roman Bishops and men in suits) Amendment rolled over women and poor women too- this screw job was by Democrats and Nancy. __ Bart. You and Rome would set women back a century. Nancy Pelosi just sold out her own gender and she knew it. Cowards. Its happened before too-off the table impeachment- no prosecutions-torture- the patriot act- the war- the banks- the environment. So why vote Democrat? At least the right is smart enough to capture the supreme disappointment in this country and now anger and dissatisfaction with a movement for change. No “hope” for sure-the Democrats are too stupid to let the left lead our country to real change that is badly needed. They will lose in 2010 because no one believes they will do anything. They just sold out health care- single payer off the table-it would have saved real costs and provided health care. Are we sick enough of this yet?
Nancy pelosi had no other choice but to allow the vote or suffer rejection of the entire bill. It passed for the same reason all of the Blue Dogs have for obstructionism- including poison pills. It is no wonder that health care/insurance reform has failed since the days of Harry Truman. Only when the Blue Dog disease is cured within the Democratic Party will we have a chance at urgently needed reform. These folks in both houses are under the control of the monied corporate interests, and now the moralist bishops who’ve jumped into the fray. Don’t blame Nancy Pelosi for taking the only viable course open to her. When the low-lifes like the Liebermans and the Blue Dogs hold sway, litle of import will be done.
You are apologizing for this travesty of the Democratic platform? What good does that do?
She picked the Catholic option which is neither Democratic nor Republican. She was never going to allow a bill that went against her Catholic faith in regards to abortion. She did not listen to you the people, she listened to the Catholic Church. If she cannot honor her position as Speaker to represent all Americans, she should give it up. A bad bill is not better than no bill.
*******
“She summoned antiabortion Democrats to her ornate Capitol office. She conferred with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to be sure the new restrictions were acceptable. She even consulted by telephone with a cardinal in Rome. ”

I think EmilysList and NARAL are “527 political organizations”. They can raise money and must file an IRS Form 990 with lists of donors and donations. This can be kept secret and I am guessing these two groups keep theirs secret. Many of the so-called liberal groups in DC such as CREW keeps these secret. But with CREW we know that Uber Lobbyist Pig Mark Penn is a major donor. So that should be enough to raise suspicion, not just with CREW, but who is running who in DC.
I suggest check to see if the donors and donations are secret or have been made public. If the Form 990 is secret, assume the worst, that they are controlled by corporate lobbyists. As if we needed any more proof!
Earlier this year someone at FDL and other places ran a series of posts about CREW, Melanie Sloan and their purpose, funding and goals and objectives.
Seems to me you were in the middle of a lot of that.
I got MY eyes opened wide by all the info, and despite what I thought CREW had done on election voting machine issues and such, am now askance at CREW and Mz. Sloan’s lack of real change for all the rhetoric they flash.
Thanks for bringing CREW back to light, in light of 527 funding and behaviors.
That was me all right. I began looking at these folks when I found out that Melanie had been invited to talk to lobbyists. Although what she told them is not public. Also her husband works for SAIC. This company has been a source of neo-con propaganda for the Iraq war. Also SAIC owns all the electronic voting machines.
I am not saying CREW is totally bad but any group that has Mark Penn as an esteemed “founder” has got lots of explaining to do. Their donors are secret.
Re$ource$ and $ocial cla$$ = let’s not rock the boat!
Since I was a 20 year old 4 buck an hour college drop out growed up on welfare lowly cook, I could NOT count all the social betters who’ve deigned to enliten me on how the mean meanies lie, and don’t tell the truth, and are untruthful, and are unnoble, and are unselfless, and are … mean meanies! LOMG! Given that I’ve lived in Seattle or Boston for 27 of the 29 years since those days when I was 20 in 1980, I’ve had a LOT of people deign to tell me how hard it is beat f’king liars. Funny how mo$t of tho$e people had a lot more of life’$ $ecurity than I’ve ever had.
I think THE numbers which matter come from 2008 individual money income –
about 160,000,000/211,000,000 had 2008 money income of 50 grand or less,
about 22,000,000/211,000,000 had 2008 money income of 75 grand or more.
what is the likelihood that those over 75 grand people, who tend to live in the leafy neighborhoods, grew up in the leafy neighborhoods BEFORE they went to the same top 100 or 150 colleges and universities? what is the chance they vacation in places filled with others of the over 75 grand set? what is the chance they socialize with each other ?????????
they ain’t rich like trump, they care about their nanny and their barista and their waitron, BUT, they don’t live like the barista, waitron, jiffy lube dude, or nanny.
How often are their jobs wal-mart-y?? Wal-mart-y like … fill these shelves in the next 20 minutes OR get the f’k out, you’re fired from your crap / no insurance, crap / no retirement, crap / no vacation … job.
I’ve done o.k. in 30 years as a higher level serf of the affluent – higher level in that I’m paid better than the 7-11 serfs.
I was a 20 year old college drop out 4 buck an hour cook and I KNEW RayGun & Fallwell were liars, and were christo-fascists, and represented people who think us bottom 99% exist to service the top 1% as doormats, boot lickers, butt wipers, cooks, dishwashers, serfs and cannon fodder.
WHY THE F**K SHOULD WE EVER LOSE TO PEOPLE LIKE THAT?
Ummmm… cuz the leafy neighborhood Demz in ‘leadership’ are politically incompetent, sell outs, or a mix of both. I can guareentee that the politically incompetent have spent toooooooooooo many years living at the top of this crap pile.

I love Maddow’s occasional segment – I think it’s called GOP out in the cold.
The race to irrelevancy.
Rachel’s show is my favorite until the last few minutes.
I’m ok with the whole thing. Remember that Rachel first featured the Iraqi baseball team in one of those last-minute segments.
