Gays get thrown under the bus with women, Hispanics, public option and single-payer supporters, community colleges, and student loan borrowers. I thought it might be possible to enact health care reform without LGBTs having to take one for the team, but no:
Today, the House Rules Committee released the reconciliation bill through which it will vote on the measure that passed the Senate in December. We are deeply disappointed that, after months of lobbying for their inclusion, important measures specifically addressing the needs of LGBT people and people with HIV – ending the unfair taxation of employer-provided domestic partner health benefits, permitting states to offer early HIV treatment under Medicaid, collecting critical health data on LGBT people and addressing discrimination in health care – are not a part of this bill. On a mixed note, this bill restores $50 million to fund failed abstinence-only sex education programs, but also provides $75 million for comprehensive programs that also address the prevention of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. According the House leadership, a vote on this measure is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
So — on the day when our community members demonstrated coast to coast for our rights to fair employment and military service, isn’t it great to know that LGBTs have also made the sacrifice expected of every left-leaning element of the Democratic coalition?
You like us, you really like us! I was beginning to think we’d been overlooked, but not this time! Kinda crowded under this bus, though….

It’s great to know we haven’t been overlooked.
i think they are bound and determined to toss everyone under that bus except rich white people teddy.
The rich white LGBT are a big gAyTM for them, though — once that gets shut down (and it won’t be soon, read the rest of the HRC article about how they are whipping grassroots and grasstops to pass the bill) the Democratic Party will be in big trouble.
I don’t see Congress legislating anything between now and the election — which is only seven months away now. Including DADT & DOMA repeal, ENDA and immigration equality. Congress is done. And the gays will be be pissed.
they are gonna find a lotta atms have cut them off — not just the gAyTM
I actually thought Obama would try to do something he believed would “appease” the LGBT community to get their support. That seems to be how he operates. That, or threats.
Getting Village, TradMed and rightwing approval for dicking Democratic interest groups seems of highest value to Obama though.
He only tries to “appease” Republicans. Now get back under that bus!
This quote is priceless:
Why do you still have any illusions about being treated “fairly” by Obama, Teddy? The way Obama operates has been clear since his FISA flip-flop and his pick of Rahm. Obama is a salesman for unpopular causes (mandated insurance, bailouts to Wall St. and big banks, escalating the wars) who was chosen as salesman-in-chief by banker supreme, Robert Rubin. Rahm is Obama’s handler and also Israel’s enforcer. None of these people give a shit about the LGBTs.
Most of us quit saying it long ago…
This is not about health care. Never was.
I don’t even care enough about these Dems enough to despise them anymore.
On the other hand, I want to know where they found a bus this honkin’ big to throw us all underneath. I mean now really? Even Cheney’s bus seemed to only accommodate 4 or 5 people at a time — this thing must be the size of six city blocks.
All Aboard !
Thanks for that! Made me laugh.
(How does she do it?)
You don’t really want to know.
And good morning all.
(((Dude)))
As long as you’re both happy, I’m happy.
blissfully!
good morning,
my new profile pic :D
omfg Jon Stewart’s deconstruction of Beck was amazing tonight. It was the “have you no decency sir” moment. If any of Beck’s acolytes ever see it, which of course they won’t.
Why is a basic cable comedian the best commentariat our democracy can afford in 2010?
Why the obsession with Glen Beck?
If Jon Stewart ever tag teams with Keith Olbermann, watch out!
When does Stewart take down Mr. Bipartisan? The greatest fraud in U.S. political history. That’s what I’m waiting for.
Thanks for that update Teddy . . .
Brutal shit indeed.
A fuckin $50 mil for failed programs on abstinence?
And tearing the shit out of good and essential programs and services . . .
Really has been a rough fucking week.
Change?
More of the same.
[rests case]
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Ever heard that expression, anybody?
It’s almost as if they’re trying to see just how much they can humiliate the Veal Pen — and/or how strong is the “don’t help the Republicans cripple poor widdle ObamaRahma by killing this bill” bullshit as a persuader.
x2
Note that the Blue Dogs never fall for this crap — or who are the ones who are first asked to take a metaphorical bullet to preserve the president’s power. It’s always the progs.
I think Obama just lost the Gay vote.
The only “Gay Vote” Barry cares about isthe checks he gets from the HRC.
And Goober’s vote for military commissions.
Wasn’t General Sheehan’s testimony yesterday a scream, allan?
The Dutch are not amused. I hope they break off diplomatic relations with us.
Lets see Koz and Nate Silver spin this as a sure fire winner with Gay voters.
Let’s see them try. That’ll cause Aravosis to rip them several new ones.
That’ll cause Aravosis to rip them several new ones.
He’ll just blame the “trans mafia” Aravosis is a bigot and a Republican. His price for his silence is and has always been Villager status.
This surprises you?
THEY HATE US. THEY WANT US DEAD. AND I’M TALKING DEMOCRATS!!!!!!
It is high time the LBGT communities woke up and realized that despite all the gains we’ve made in the actual world when it comes to politics NOTHING HAS MOVED!
I’m 63 years old. I became a gay activist right after Stonewall. The Gay Activists Alliance — of which I was a member, working on its “Media Committee” alongside Vito Russo — struggled mightly to get gays and lesbians to COME OUT. That battle has been won. The other battle we were fighting was to get the basic civil rights. It was a simple matter, seeimngly. Just include “sexual orientation” along with race and religion as a resons people couldn’t be fired from their jobs or deptrived of housing. It wasn’t until YEARS after I left New York for California that such legislation was voted in. Sundry cities and municipalities across the rotten-fruited plain have made similar provisions.
But not Nationally.
That’s what ENDA is about. And as you know it’s been put on the back burner while the spotlight has been hogged by Gay Marriage and DADT. Both are importat issues, but not as important as ENDA. Why marry your lover when that fact could lead to your being fired? And don’t get me started on our campaigns of genocidal imperialism. Dan Choi’s a sweet guy and I wish him well — but not the organization he’s fighting to stay in.
I just finished watching the youtube of Jon doing Glen. Seriously funny.
Who’s doing the lying? The (rich) arians.
Don’t Let The Change Be The Enemy of the Hope !
Teddy –
Jane reminded us all of something yesterday:
IOW, the Party’s longstanding plank of Choice was ripped up so as to further widen Corporate Stakeholders participation – so now in my barely caffeinated state I am wondering how many of these measures were thrown out not so much because they encompassed all that ‘icky’ LGBT stuff, but so as to further widen Treasury gates to corporate greed
Preventative check ups would reduce the costs of any illnesses, I would think. But, I’m blond, so I’m not sure. Maybe they should distribute free bleach so that all the citizens can be dumb.
I think that is in the “education reform” package.
I clearly remember watching Obama pee all over the gays and the constitution during the primaries. But still most of the liberals were blindly loyal to him– thus the term “Obamabots”.
Of course a lot of those people have left the Lake since then. But I just hope liberals will wake up and quit supporting this charlatan.
I’ve been wondering why so many people stay loyal to the President who has not given us much hope for the future. Is it possible that they so desperately want to believe something and they can’t think outside of the two party – supposedly- box?
I’ve been humming Lennon’s Imagine lately. I remember when I first played that song for my father and the incredulous look he gave me.
I love that song.
Good Morning !
Jane (who else ?:D) got right down to the nut cuttin’ on the question of Why the night of MA Senate Election – wish I’d have bookmarked the sucker – but she spoke about how deeply so many had invested their identity in Obama and how any overall threat to his agenda was a personal threat. geez, I’m mucking it up, but it was a bulls-eye
plus, let’s face it(even if they wont) we have found out so many of our fellow travelers are more partisan than progressive. Rollback on Choice !, Mandates ! Discrimination of all Stripes ! Go Team !!!!
personally relieved oldnslow and I will be on the road on Sunday when this atrocity is voted on – sparing me the high fivin’ and celebratin’ on FB
Ah. Jane is a smart one, isn’t she? I tend more to self identify with the choices I make and how I treat people. Whew, glad for that.
Don’t count them chickens yet. I want the celebration on my side of the fence.
I continue to hope (jeebus) that you are correct.
have had a ‘serious’ diary rolling around in my head for months now – asking the cheerleaders
just where is the effing line for y’all ?!?
if Beauregard Sessions or some other inbred dog had asked to join in the Bi Partisan fun and the only concession required for his participation was a weakening of current civil rights legistlation, Title IX, Voting Rights Act, etc., do any of the pom pom wavers seriously think it would not have happened ?!?! and would they still be cheering (sadly yes)
and yes, I know the whole Bi Partisan thingy was mere cover for Corporate hijinks.
seriously, where is the effing line for this crowd ???
Shorter O: Keep the stinking 700 mil, you freaks.
I thought it would be too disruptive to the system.
Uh, yes, Mr. President. That is what we want. When a system doesn’t work, when it doesn’t provide life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for ALL, that system needs disrupting. Simple.
Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection.
So are we all still pretending that it’s possible to salvage this Party, or are we going to form a third one? I’ve had it with under the bus.
What will be fun is when the rethugs are returned to power by voters who won’t see any other choice and the dims- leadership, veal pen and all, find themselves looking up at the underside of that same bus…
Obama: “But my administration didn’t have any hippies! And look at all the GOPs I left in power!”
GOP: “Thanks for that, now all you damn hippies can just get your asses out in the road… the bus is due any minute.”
Because the oligarchs don’t care as long as they get to pull the strings. After all… who do you think is driving that damn bus?
Gays get thrown under the bus with women, Hispanics, public option and single-payer supporters, community colleges, and student loan borrowers.
There’s a f***ing surprise. Throwing LGBT people under the bus has long been a staple in Democratic “compromise”. I guess throwing transgendered people under the bus wasn’t good enough to appease the narrow minded, bigoted assholes this time so they did it to the entire community. Ah well. No doubt a lot of gay men like John Aravosis will blame the “trans mafia” again and the world will turn and tomorrow will be another day. Same as yesterday, same as today.
But John Berry says just be patient.
We’re patients, alright. On Gurneys!
Leave us not forget where the Democrats were in the early days of the AIDS crisis.
NOWHERE!
Come on Teddy. Think positive!! Jason says it’s the greatest thing since the invention of electricity, and his post on the Seminal says everybody overwhelmingly supports it! Then he lists all the positive things Obama has done. It’s really amazing. Bestest President the US has ever known. Ya, that was a snark.
Hey, Beave, you’re not trying to start something are you? Got something to say about the nuts of this post?
Naw. Just found it comical to read the majority on here showing the true nature of this sham legislation, then going to the other part of this site and hearing the marching bands. It’s funny in a sad sort of way.
Glad this site gives you so much entertainment. No one I know likes to be judged. It just feels wrong.
I’m not judging demi. Just reading up and trying to decipher.
You would prefer an echo chamber? There are plenty of those on the web, should be easy to find.
Little Sir Echo, how do you do? Hello. Hello.
Good Morning mr. wolf. Hanging in there fine?
‘Morning, demi.
I am glad to see you still here; meant to comment t’other day, regarding your genuine concerns on the “wild” thread, but distractions and juggling bunches of things … limited my participation, somewhat.
Any word on the music-related job front?
DW
Good Morning to you, David.
I called (again) and the owner told me that the marketing guy who’s doing the hiring is in Boston until Monday. As a friend of my keeps reminding me “They’re musicians!” So, we’ll wait some more. But, every time I call, I plant my name in their heads.
In terms of my recurring visits to this site, I’m fairly tenacious. Or stubborn. *g* They can’t get rid of me so easily.
Well, with musicians it is all about timing …
And I’m willing to bet you are growin’ on ‘em.
Name recognition is right up there with “location, location …”
Now, if you were to also come up with a hummable little ditty, you know the kind, the one ya can’t get out of yer mind?
Musicians, bless ‘em, are especially prone to such things, I have discovered.
;~DW
I have a tendency to ruminate and usually have some tune rolling around in my head. It’s my inner life score.
I am a musician, but not the total genius, right brain focused kind like my husband. *g*
Echo chamber? Almost the entire blogosphere of “progressive” sites support this bill. There’s the echo.
Also, imagine that we are not all exactly the same. Do not see issues in the exact same way. This site offers different contributors with varying points of view. Just how it is.
Yes it does and that’s why it’s one of the few remaining sites worth visiting. Thanks for reminding me!
Why do you omit the fact that after the HRC blog points out the above noted dismissal of the gay community, they go on, incredibly, to endorse the bill. Gay advocacy groups like HRC are a large part of the problem for us. They no longer lobby lawmakers on our behalf, but instead lobby our community on behalf of the lawmakers. Until HRC is gutted and gone our movement will go nowhere.
SING OUT LOUISE!
The KAPOS of the HRC must be sent packing.
Because that part is no surprise. Of course HRC still supports, and is “whipping grassroots and grasstops” as they say, to support the bill. It’s their nature, they can’t help it.
Need links to some of the past posts about the various ‘interest groups’ and how they exist in order to raise money, not to change the system. (Of course the resident trolls will never read them.)
Which Side Are You On
Thank you so much for that. Gave me tears. Gotta stand up together.
Thanks, SD, that’s the honest music that matches the true rhythm of these times.
DW
We need a picture of that bus, with all of those interest groups jammed under there!
Any one?
