By citing DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart’s own description of her agency’s “highest priority” — abuse of prescription drugs — and his own home state’s documented success weaning prescription drug addicts by the use of legal medical marijuana, Congressman Jared Polis actually got the Top Drug Cop to move off her “all drugs are bad, m’kay?” repetition to the more forthright and useful statement that “We will pursue any avenues to reduce drug addiction.”
This statement may cause a problem for her, since it is a lie. Unless orders go forth from her office to stop busting patients whose prescription drug addition is being treated by medical marijuana, she has misled Congress and misreported her agency’s behavior to date.
Getting Leonhart to modify her agency’s enforcement priorities so that patients in Colorado who are prescribed medical marijuana to treat their prescription drug addiction is another matter entirely. But surely Congressman Polis is aware that with the Roger Clemons prosecution having crashed and burned only this week, Eric Holder’s well-staffed Task Force on Lying to Congress is now untasked.
The next time Leonhart’s storm troopers raid a Colorado medical marijuana dispensary — only days away, given her agency’s blistering pace of crackdowns — Polis should recall her to testify immediately after a some prescription drug addicts’ treating physicians, who no longer have access to the reliable tool of medical marijuana. Leonhart’s lie that the DEA will pursue any available avenues to reduce drug addition is certainly worth a Congressional contempt citation, given her past and likely future enforcement action against recovering Oxycontin addicts finding success with a medical marijuana regime.

What crypt did they resurrect Leonhart from? She makes AGAG look good.
Can’t have the head of the DEA being honest where it could end up in print now can they?
She is a Bush holdover that the US Senate refused to even hold hearings on when W nominated her to head the agency, having been an Acting before that. Of course, the Senate confirmed her unanimously by voice vote when 0 nominated her.
Adding: I think it’s important to acknowledge that, like the head of the Army Corps of Engineers, this lady can make any legislators’ home state’s largest city an absolute living hell through resource allocation that would stand up to the most detailed scrutiny.
She can order blocks burned to the ground with impunity. She can isolate the local police force from even the most basic law enforcement. She can prioritize a drug war in any American — and many Mexican — cities such that civilians die in record numbers.
That explains it.
It’s like the architectural design contest for big box stores. They build the last place design.
W was good at picking losers.
@RepPolisPress… official Congr. Account
if one was of a mind to let the distinguished gentleman from Colorado know one is paying attention

Let’s call it the Bernanke Effect, shall we?
W picks a loser clearly aligned with loser GOP elite policies; 0 renominates.
All of this is further proof that our Congressional and Oval Office elected officials are basically empty suits for the MIC and the Big Pharma interests. As well as the Bi Oil, Big Nuke Power People, and Big Financial families.
Be interested in knowing what her response would be if someone were to inform her that medical marijuana patients in Sonoma California are being told not to worry – that with a valid prescription, they can obtain medical marijuana from a pharmacy in Great Britain. Just whose family interests are we looking after? I’d love the name of that individual.
Thanks Teddy for that info and I would like to say I’m amazed by how many hold overs there are but then again this hopism at it’s best.
I don’t want the government in our penis’ , vagina, lungs or any other part of our inter space that isn’t causing harm to another. Isn’t that clear enough ?
Why do we borrow money from the Chinese to finance these unwinnable wars ?
I teach middle school. Last year the local drug enforcement officers gave their anti drug presentation to the 6th grade boys in my classroom. There were 5 sections, so I got to hear the presentation 5 times. I found it disturbing. It is a mistake to lump drugs like heroin, meth and LSD with marijana. I think it is important to warn kids about heroin, meth and LSD. Glue sniffing is very dangerous too. But kids are not stupid or isolated in a bubble. Marijuana is available to them. They use it. They know darn well that it’s harmless. So when drugs that can kill with one mistake such as heroin or meth or drugs that can cause permanent mental impairment with just one dose like LSD are lumped in with marijuana it defeats the purpose of warning the kids.
And just like the bureaucratic atomaton in this video, those cops were just doing what they were told. They didn’t give a damn that they were putting the kids at risk and making their entire effort meaningless by lumping marijuana, an herb, in with truly dangerous drugs. Those cops, just like the DEA head in this video were just concerned about their jobs and making sure their checks keep coming every month.
The whole thing made me sick.
I agree with your sentiments but I think it’s important to note that it is what we choose to do with substances that is dangerous. Heroin is very similar to pain killers that are needed by many. Meth is almost the same as the adderal prescribed to millions for ADD. And LSD was a very promising treatment for alcoholism and changes many people’s consciousness in positive ways, even when used in irresponsible ways. My impression is that the folks who seemed to have suffered damage from LSD were also using other substances, or were having difficulties before the LSD use, or were not following basic good practice of having a sober person close at hand. Often the fact of prohibition is what creates the most extreme dangers.
On the other hand, the fact that marijuana is an herb is neither here nor there in terms of its potential dangers. Many natural substances are quite dangerous. That said, I do agree with you that it is destructive for the authorities to perpetrate inept educational strategies with regard to the universal human desire to alter our consciousness.
Recommended! Definitely worth viewing; Polis is tenacious but polite, a master.
Agree. Drug education should emphasize avoiding the physically addictive drugs, including tobacco. It should also focus on abuse, not use. Marijuana like alcohol (and I suppose video games and the internet) can be abused in self-destructive ways. Kids should learn, for instance, about the warning signs of substance abuse.
Of course, why would you have cops making such a rational presentation? In contrast, their presentations, naturally, will be the stupid to most 12-year-olds ‘these drugs are illegal and therefore very very bad’.
Let’s get fundie religious for just a few syllables:
It is written in the ‘Good Book’ that ‘god’ said everything in the Garden of Eden was for man’s use.
Unless she/it/he created ‘Mary Jane’ in a parallel creation in a parallel universe, well ‘god’ has spoken and in this very special case I ain’t going to call ‘god’ out on this one.
Thank you ‘god’!
