PULL UP A CAT or THE GREAT AND FABULOUS SUNDAY CAT SHOW
Morning, kitteh-loving Firepups! It’s my pleasure to be hosting today, and crossing my fingers for everything going right. I’ve got a couple of videos for you, but for copyright reasons, I may have to just link to them.
Things have been pretty good around my little casita de gatitos in Tejas this week. Only one morning with a peed-on floor, and every evening, the kittehs gather round me …in fact, on top o’ me, all three of them sometimes. This is a bit unusual. Smokey is usually a bit aloof, sleeping or hanging out apart from the rest of us, but even he’s been here, on the arm of my chair, or even squeezed onto my lap, next to Squeaky. One night he was sleeping with his head on her shoulder. I usually only see this in the coldest part of winter.
Maybe they missed me when I was away a couple times recently?
Here’s a video you may have already seen, but I love it so much: a man builds a tower of cardboard boxes for his beloved cat, Rufus. It’s time-lapsed, with Rufus appearing during the building, inspecting the work. Adorable.
There’s also a new Simon’s Cat, which is where I found the above video…Simon’s Cat is about boxes. Hunh. Link gets an error message; but if you haven’t seen it, check back for it.

Big Boy continues to come along as a tentative member of the family. He comes farther into the kitchen now, and even steals from Smokey’s dish (he eats in the kitchen), but hasn’t gone under the kitchen swinging door to the rest of the place. He’s even hanging out for longer and longer periods before wanting to go back out.
And best of all, I had been thinking, with our first cool nights (60’s!), and a heavy rain one night, that soon it would be time for him to need a warm spot to sleep, like the bed I put out for him last year, which my landlord absolutely forbade in the new lease in May.
Surprise! My newest neighbor put out a chair near her door …not a lawn chair or patio chair, but an old upholstered chair; nice, fuzzy, soft upholstery. A sort of modern club chair with high arms. The other night I realized Big Boy was curled up in it…perfectly warm and cozy, protected from the wind and rain. He came to breakfast from there this morning, and was there already when I took out trash late tonight. Heh heh. No cat “bedding,” no lease violation…and Big Boy’s taken care of.
But this morning, poor guy…I startled him awake when I came out the backdoor; saw him sit up straight, stare at me, then take off through the pouring rain, making for the top of the wall around the yard. He disappeared, and I haven’t seen him since. Hard to take out the feral responses to startle. (Here he is)
And by the time it gets actually cold here, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s ready to spend the night indoors. Sometimes, things work out.

Weird…thought I followed instructions for pix,but they’re not even highlighted as links…
Rats.
Curiouser and curiouser! Did a lurking mod/editor notice my failure and fix it? The pix are here!
Loved the box building video…I’d never seen it before.
Ha! All you needed to do is put a chair outside your door to get around the evil cat-hating landlord. What a relief that Big Boy will have a warm, dry place for the winter.
ysp!So good to see you! Yeah, and it isn’t even MY chair!
Isn’t the box tower terrific? I wanted to run out and buy 100 boxes when I watched it. Don’t exactly have that much room, though. But the video is so well-done, you don’t even mind watching the building. And then Rufus…obviously appreciating his present.
Rufus was obviously a cool cat. I love to see that kind of relationship between kitteh and hoomin.
Where is everybody today?
Good question. I was starting to get nervous that no one would come (much like a birthday party I gave in junior high…sniff)!
It’s rainy and cool here, a perfect day for sleeping. If it’s cool in nw Indiana, msmolly is probably on her bike…
The door will be open all day; I’ll be going back and forth to do laundry and such, too.Drop in and out as you wish!
Yep. Sunday is chore day for me too. Laundry, cat box, picking up the house. I’m working on my Halloween costume if I have time–I’m going as a giant bag of money this year. Be what you want to draw to your life, heheh.
Caturday!
My kitty brought a mouse in last night, I hope he isn’t stocking up for winter.
Eeeww. Live or dead? Not that either one is as appreciated by the hoomin as the gifting kitty thinks…
The Back Stage people are the finest! Aren’t they?
I saw that Cat Apology the other day and left a link. Somewhere, maybe Diner.
It’s a wonderful video. Lots of love there.
I’m having a hard time understanding how people who love cats missed that one.
Thanks, Tejanarusa, for putting on the gloves for this one.
You really are a dear. But, your photo/icon has always frustrated me.
Nice neck, though. That was from when you went to a xmas party last year, no?
Face, Please.
So you think that’s what happened?
I, too, have no time on Sundays at all any more–household and family responsibilities make even sitting down at the computer a no-no. But I did have to check something online today, and just stopped at FDL quickly. Good to read that everyone’s cats are well and happy.
Hi, demi! Yes, well, I prefer to be mees-teer-ee-oos, y’know.
Yeah, it was Christmas time my favorite sweater and Christmas tree pin.
I could just replace with one of the kittehs….
Sign of the times? Coincidence?
Whatever. All cat (and dog, too, really, not to mention bird–) people are welcome.
which reminds me…RATFOOD! OH, RATFOOD! We miss you and Bob!
(I know, he’s getting healthy walking and living in the real world, but still, we do miss him)
I’ve had the experience of people “with keys” helping out…from time to time.
You know that Elliot is the weekend editor. Don’t know that she’s the one this time, but there are some really wonderful and kind people who help Run The Lake.
Including normal, regular commenters who step up to post and host a regularly expected Feature, like the Cat posts and PUAC and even Late Late Night when needed.
Nice group of folks, eh?
Abner news: Mr replaced the old leaky window on the front of the house with one that has a nice, pristine screen on it. Need I say more than a burst of expletives ensued?
Ah….Blog Noir.
I love a good mystery. Which reminds me, that this is, afterall, a cat thread and it’s been a little while since I’ve mentioned Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Brown’s fun mysteries where the animals help solve the mystery. Fun stuff if you haven’t read them, YET.
It’s the season of prepping for colder weather and the holidays to come, I think. The days get shorter and things need to get done. *sigh*
Hmmm…my imagination is running wild…
Elliott…was that you? Fixing my problem? Thank you very much. Yes, the bunches of nice folks are why I still hang out here…plus features like Caturday, of course. More than happy to take my turn.
And, aren’t we all glad that you are willing, not to mention Able.
Yes we are, but now some of the comments have pushed my guilt button, so I’m going to go do some cleaning in the kitchen. All that food making and eating sure leaves a mess.
BBL.
(Thanks, TJ)
Ratfood and Bob are missed!

bgrothus sent this to me on FB…fits right into the Cat Tower of Boxes theme…
Thanks, b!
(oh, and she said she can’t make it today. One regular down…but explained)
demi…when you return from your guilty chore-doing, yes, I have read several of the Sneaky Pie books, none of the more recent. Kinda got tired of them after awhile, but they were great fun. I went in a darker direction for awhile, then didn’t read mysteries at all for several years. I read in phases. ;)
Classic Lolcat. Thanks, bg.
You an demi might take a peak at Midnight Louie. I haven’t read them all but a fun read and Louie tends to be a hot shit

Taking a break.
Yeah, I only read three, maybe. But, they were fun.
I always read, but I go through periods of reading certain types of books. I’m reading a book right now that is told ALL through letters. Fascinating.
Midnight Louie is now on a post-it on my desk. Thanks, Dakine.
Sounds like an old jazz/blues musician. Are you going to include him among the watercooler birthday posts? :)
Aww. Such a handsome boy. They do love those pots and boxes and things, don’t they? And they fit them so well.
Nah, he’s a caturday denizen, not a blooz man :}) (besides don’t think the author has ID’d a b’day for him)
I went out to get the towels out of the dryer and put in the clothes. Carried my umbrella ’cause it’s raining that hard. No point having the towels wet again by the time they get inside, right?
Pushy is now enjoying the pile of warmth of the towels on the bed. Squeaky is on my lap.
But Smokey….well,he wanted out when I went out, so I thought, okay, let him see just how ugly it is out there.
(Sometimes even I forget that the kittehs do not think the same way hoomins do.)
He paused in a dry spot on the patio (the patio roof leaks, so much of it is wet), as I went to and fro the laundry room. Then, dumb me, I had a brilliant (!) idea…pick him up and carry him around the yard to look about…while protecting us both with the umbrella…
Baaaad idea! He purred as I settled him in one arm, but the moment the umbrella was raised over his head….he panicked and leaped out of my arms, racing straight to a spot under the staircase to the garage apartment. My effort to coax him out just sent him running to the wall…I called him, heading for the door, and he leaped (a huge, looong leap) off the wall and raced toward…..the big tree, and up he went.
I presume he’s on the roof somewhere..there are some sheltered spots, though I doubt they’re dry. Went up the staircase to look, and couldn’t see him. Called him from the front steps, in case he was on that side of the roof.
No response yet.
Poor guy. Momma oughta know better after all these years with kittehs.
I read one Midnight Louie (Carol Nelson Douglas is the author), but maybe it was the Vegas setting…couldn’t really get into it.
But it’s a good thing he hasn’t had a birthday fixed…must be over 20 years old by now…a long-running series.
Oughta pick up another…sometimes things I didn’t like the first try are quite appealing at a different point in life (applies to books, movies, food, etc.)
Good to see you, dakine01, thanks for coming by.
That date might only be in the author’s head.
I hope you have a restful and healthy Sunday Afternoon, Dakine.
Hi firekittehs and thank you, Tejana, for this fabulous cat show :)
I finally have something to contribute other than memories of much loved cats.
Mottyl and Argent (Arry)
Hope this link works.
Hey, Om.
Are Mottyl and Arry your kittehs? Great names, BTW. What is the origin?
Om!!! Did you go to the shelter this weekend? (they look very much at home already)
They must be littermates, no? They look so much alike, and are so comfortable together.
Congratulations on becoming a kitteh mom again! (not that we mind nostalgic stories of the Great Kittehs of the Past)
Welcome, Motty and Arry.
Hi ysd, loved the Abner in the pot photo :) How is Gracie, btw?
Yes! We were kayaking last weekend and found them at the gravel put-in ramp. Someone had dropped them off, thinking that the area would be busy over the weekend, I guess. SOB. They were up a tree, crying. We though we would take them to our great no-kill shelter, but couldn’t do it. They are adapting beautifully, and we love them to distraction.
Glad you like the names. Mottyl is from a novel called Not Wanted on the Voyage, by Timothy Findley. It is a retelling of the Flood story, and Mottyl, to whom the title refers, more or less narrates the story. Great book.
Argent is the Old French for ‘silver’, and Arry is a beautiful silvery-grey.
Thank you! I’ve been calling her Motty Mouse :)
Got to run for now, but wanted to introduce them to you guys and kittehs. If I don’t see you later, have a great afternoon, and thanks Tejana and everyone who has been hosting.
Great job tejana! Thanks for taking kitteh duties today. Love that Smokey!
Oh, Om, you win the prize for biggest kitteh news of the week! Good on you for taking Mottyl and Arry home with you.
(when you have time, I wanna hear the story of carrying kitties who don’t know you in a kayak….it’s gotta be good)
Peggy! Was wondering when you’d turn up!
As you see if you read from the top, I messed up the pictures somehow, but a kind gremlin (likely named Elliott) came along and fixed it for me. :)
Speaking of Smokey…he’s been located. In his favorite hidey spot (when outdoors) under the patio eaves.
I peeked out the door a few minutes ago and called him…saw movement up under the eaves. He raised his head and opened his mouth….his usual expression of either, “Help me!” or “What have you done to me!”
He moved like he’d like to come down, but there’s no route to do it without getting wet….a conundrum for a pussycat…
I believe he may have been telling me to get a ladder and come get him…but there isn’t a ladder I can get and use safely that will reach him. Wonder if the rain is gonna stop at all today? If it does, he’ll be down in a flash.
I’m such a bad kitteh mother!
Just now caught up on comments. I wonder where you went wrong?
Kuroneko enjoyed the change in the weather at first but now she’s just sitting at the patio door, looking morosely out at the wet world.
Thanks, tejana. I like to see everyone’s pictures.
I have a bear country update. We have two deep piles of old leaves out behind a large boulder in back of the house. One pile has branches and other stuff on it, but the other is just leaves. Just in the last few days a bear has moved into the pile of leaves. It dug a couple of holes to get deeper into the leaves for the warmth. I’m not sure which bear it is; we now have two or three living in the neighborhood. One has an injured leg; probably from a car accident. Ms. BearCountry and I are pretty excited about it.
Well congratulations on getting chosen by your new feline overlords. How old do you think they are? They look high energy!
Well, look at folks coming out of the woodwork! Hiya, Bear Country! Your location is proving your name is right, huh? Can you tell if it’s a young bear? Is it confused, can’t find a cave to hibernate in? (well, I guess you can’t get close enough to ask him/her, after all).
Peggy – dunno where I went wrong, either. That’s the only thing; not ungrateful, but love to know how to do it right.
Too bad for Kuroneko…Mommy just won’t turn that rain off for her.
Oh, and Smokey’s back, sitting behind me (I’m now on the edge of the chair, as Squeaky took over the seat when I got up), washing/drying his paws and fur. The rain actually slowed down, and I guess he caught a glimpse of me in the kitchen, and raced to the door…dashed right in.
I gave him some treats and patted his damp fur (not soaked) with a paper towel. Don’t think he’ll try to sneak out the door again today. : )
Bears don’t have to go into caves to hibernate. They can get into a hollow or under someone’s porch or even into a deep pile of leaves. I hope I see this one soon to see which one it is. We can’t see it from our back windows, we have to go out there, but I don’t want to scare it away.
If you’re around. You were adopted by some fine looking kitties. They would be hard to turn down.
Hi BearCountry. Thank you, they are very sweet kittens, I don’t understand how anyone could have put them out of a car and driven away. Isn’t in the DNA of any of us here, that is for certain.
Do you think the bear will spend the entire winter with you?
When I visualize your home I think of it being very isolated, but when you refer to your “neighborhood”, how close are the homes, one to another?
Wow. So he really might hibernate there through the winter? How far behind your house is this pile of leaves?
Think I owe you a beverage:). Request?
Hot tea, today. Still working on defeating the cough. Thanks! How about you?
I’ve had that cough. Nasty, hangy on thing.
Coming’ up and I think I’ll join you, although I’m lucky and unlike you and Margaret I’ve avoided the cough, knock on wood.
Yups.
I may disappear for a little while…short nap, work on dinner, etc.
The bed has clean sheets, most of the trash is collected for trash day tomorrow, soap in dispensers, dishes even washed, and all the laundry back in the house (though not all put away).
I have been dispossessed from the recliner…both Squeaky and Smokey sleeping there now. Squeaky is even on my book…not that it’s the only book I could read, but it was the one I intended to read. Stretching out on the bed for a little while sounds good….
Talk amongst yourselves; I know I can trust you not to get into fistfights on the Caturday-as-was page…
Has anyone heard from Ruth? ( guess I could go check my friends’ page, brb )
Hah! Another knocker on wood…my Nicarauguan coworkers think I’m pretty funny when I do that. Must be an Anglo or Northern European superstition…they didn’t know it.
I always say it’s my only superstition, but I can’t stop believing in it, too risky.
Oh, good. Back safe and sound.
I think she put in a brief appearance yesterday, PUAC maybe? Sounded like she was busy and exhausted cleaning up from months of empty house…dust and such, I suppose. Prolly had had internet turned off, too, and had to restart it, etc., etc.
I hate to be bound by superstition, but I always wish the same wish over my birthday candles every year :). No, not just another year for me, lol! Can’t tell you what it is, though, because then it wouldn’t come true. Another superstition!
Oh, that is true! Guess I believe in that one, too. lol!
Om and tejana. Our house is in a regular neighborhood, but we have a lot of woods behind us. We have woods right close behind and on one side of the house. Neither my wife nor I want to have a beautifully manicured lawn. Out past our property is a dry creek bed that used to have a small railroad. That is all undeveloped land that wildlife uses for a trail between the houses on our side of the street and the houses on the cliff on the other side of the dry creek. It runs perpendicular to our property.
It is possible that the bear will winter there. I hope so because it will be protected from the hunters starting around New Year’s day for a week or so. I’m retired to I will watch and not let the hunters on my land. I especially hate the practice of baiting bears so they can be shot with no effort by the “hunter.” The interpreters of the law want the hunters to be able to bait the bears by feeding them, but anyone else will be fined. The law, as it is written does not distinguish.
Even just unpacking from a long trip can be a real pain in the you-know-what. I especially hate putting toiletries away. Seems to take for bloody ever.
I always put everything away as quickly as I can or it will stay for weeks.
Good for you for protecting them. The Dick Cheney’s of the world ought to be tossed out into the wild to see what it is like to on the other side of the rifle scope. *spit*
Sounds like a wonderful place for a home, with the woods and wildlife all around you.
That’s my husband’s philosophy, as well. I’m an old canoe camper and still toss my stuff into ziplock bags. I have been known to just throw the whole bag into the bathroom drawer or closet shelf and shout, “I win! Cocktails!”. He caught on pretty quick to that one, though :)
Which reminds me, Om, please, tell us about getting the kitties home in the kayak. Please, please? There has to be a story there.;)
Oh, I wish there was! No, we didn’t put them in the kayaks, although I have canoed with a cat before.
Just picked them up and held them in my lap while Abu Ali drove. They were exhausted and fell asleep in my arms and we couldn’t bear to take them to the shelter. I’d been wanting another cat but he wasn’t convinced, but he could never turn away an animal in need. He of course is totally wrapped around their little paws now.
Got to start dinner now, thanks again for the post, you did a fabulous job! Hope you all have a good evening and hope to see you at the Lake this week.
Oh, good, that AbuAli couldn’t resist them. Fate, obviously; Kismet!
I can’t help thinking, darn it, that I miss hearing from Southern Dragon on Sundays. Lord knows he’s earned Sundays off, but, selfishly, I miss his warm comments and deep insights into feline behavior. Not to mention wondering how things are Chez Tigre.
SD, if you’re looking in, here we are, waving wildly!
Dem’s some good looking kittehs.
Hej, y’all.
Tejana, I have to agree. Big boy may be thinking of a move indoors.
All’s well at Chez Tigre. I’ve had to move a litter box back into the bedroom, grrrrrr, cuz Tama has decided that peeing and pooping on the floor at the foot of the bed, near where the old box was, is easier than walking into the other room. He’s always pretty much just lived in the bedroom. I’ve never been able to take the feral out of him or his brother Bapu. He’s affectionate but won’t have anything to do with any of the others except his brother and only tolerates him.
Good to see your fonts SD.
Yay! SD checked in…
Hey there, Tiger Man! So good to see you! sorry about the Tama problem….I know too well whereof you speak. Would love to move the two in the living room out, too,but don’t trust Smokey yet.
You are most welcome to your rest, but perhaps you didn’t realize how much your lovely (handsome?) self is missed.
Namaste, Dragonman.
Uh-oh. Not sharking, exactly, but my crew is waking up. Pushy trying to climb onto the laptop, Squeaky restlessly walking back and forth on my leg, Smokey sleepily staring over his outstretched paw from his spot on the chair a couple feet away.
Guess this might mean it’s feed-the-kitties time.
Wonder if Big Boy will appear? He took off before eating anything, and hasn’t appeared since. I’m sure he has a spot for staying dry somewhere that he’s been holed-up in. Not hearing rain now, so maybe it’s stopped or slowed enough to bring him home.
Gonna step away to take care of them. I’ll be back, at least to close the Cat-ur-day, if not before. For those who are leaving, thanks so much for coming by and telling your kitteh stories! I’ve really enjoyed playing host.
Oooo Hai, SD and everyone. I was out all day, and this is a drive by, but guess what? We got kittens at the Black Hole, and so not everyone got et up by the cougar kitten. Two adorable kittens and a mama are hanging, and I just love to watch them watching us. You know there are also two kittens at the feral colony. “Kittens are dumb, they go right into the traps,” say the women who neuter and release them. Anyway, kittens are too adorable. I found a place inside the basement where kittehs are clearly sleeping, but I have no idea how they have been getting in there. Also evidence of raccoons, no idea where the hidey hole is.
Congrats on your new additions, Om Ali!
Hmm, let’s see if this works--popped up on FB and I couldn’t resist sharing (if possible)
Hey, good to see you! Bet you’ve been at your going-out-of-business sale, huh? More kittehs!Glad they found their way to shelter.
Gotta run. Kittehs giving me the dagger look.
Awww, cute.
Isn’t it? Should be our theme here…I swear, lately, if I had my own place, I might seriously have adopted a pup…
Guess everyone has already gone to bed or to do other things. I’m preparing to go to sleep myself.
Thanks to everyone for coming by, and have a good week for yourselves and your sweet animal family members.
Thank you, we think so, too :)
Thanks, bg! We serve at their pleasure
