For those on the Left, one of the most frustrating aspects of this Presidential election has been following the narratives of both establishment parties, each aligned with the other in their complimentary fictions, as they deceive the American voters into believing there is an actual choice to be made here.
Beyond the rhetorical divide, the actual differences between Obama and Romney are minor, if not downright trivial. Each candidate, regardless of how he has actually governed in the past, uses the talking points from his party’s platform to tap into the ideological preferences of his base. The contest is little more than a theater of deception.
Romney, who governed like a Clintonian Democrat, now speaks in ways that appeal to his base, which continues to drift rightwards a la Tea Party.
As Governor of Massachusetts, Romney implemented what would become the blueprints for Obamacare, and offered generous subsidies for those in his state who couldn’t afford it. He embraced a pro-choice position, favored gun control, was pro-gay-rights. He opposed the flat tax, was critical of Bush tax cuts. He believes in global warming, and has supported ‘cap and trade’ policies.
Whereas Romney has been forced to move rhetorically to the right, Barack Obama, who himself has governed from right-of-center, needs to reestablish his own cred with his liberal base, and is thus, only too happy to accommodate Romney in aligning their fictions.
Perhaps the biggest hurdle that both candidates have had to overcome with regards to their respective bases is in trying to convince them that there actually are fundamental differences between their visions for America’s economic model.
The Obama campaign was the first to seize on a distinction when it released a video showing Mitt Romney at a Boca Raton fundraiser expressing disdain for Obama voters, suggesting they are “dependent upon government” and feel entitled to handouts.
But this video revelation actually enhanced the far-Right cred that the Governor had been so desperate for. You might think his own campaign planted the video. In fact, he proudly wore the video revelation around like a medal. The Tea Party won’t see me as a RINO anymore, he likely surmised.
Seeing this as the perfect red meat issue needed to re-energize his base, Romney pivoted to the hot-button ‘Socialism’ charge. He charged Obama with being another Socialist-minded liberal who wants to take money from those who work hard and succeed, to then redistribute it to those who don’t.
After unearthing a 1998 video showing a young Obama expressing that he believed in “redistribution at a certain level,” Romney pounced:
“He [Obama] really believes in what I’ll call a government-centered society. I know there are some who believe that if you simply take from some and give to others then we’ll all be better off. It’s known as redistribution. It’s never been a characteristic of America,” Romney said Wednesday at an Atlanta fundraiser. “There’s a tape that came out just a couple of days ago where the president said yes he believes in redistribution. I don’t. I believe the way to lift people and help people have higher incomes is not to take from some and give to others but to create wealth for all.”
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus seconded that description of Obama, and now all GOP surrogates are on message, making the ‘redistribution’ buzzword the central theme in Romney’s campaign.
But of course this depiction of Obama couldn’t be further from the truth. Obama has actually governed like a starry-eyed Milton Friedman disciple. Bloomberg News decided to investigate Romney’s ‘redistribution’ charge, and here is what they found:
If President Barack Obama is trying to spread the wealth, he doesn’t have much to show for it. [...]
[S]ince Obama took office in January 2009, wealthy Americans have continued to pull away from the rest of society. In the aftermath of the recession, income inequality in the U.S. reached a new high in 2011, Census Bureau data show.
Even as the president has decried the hollowing out of the middle class, the fortunes of labor and capital have diverged on his watch. Quarterly corporate profits of $1.9 trillion have almost doubled since the end of 2008, while workers’ inflation- adjusted average hourly earnings have declined.
“At the very high end, people got a whole lot wealthier whereas income stagnated at other levels,” said Anne Mathias, director of Washington research for Guggenheim Securities LLC. “Fifty years ago, people talked about the other half, how the other half lived, and now we’re talking about the other 1 percent.”
But, forget reality — back to the fantasyland that is our Presidential Election.
Knowing his progressive base sees the U.S. economy through the 1% vs 99% prism and views his last 3 1/2 years as a monumental sellout to the 1%, Obama likely sees an opening in Romney’s ‘redistribution’ charge. This Republican accusation may be exactly what he needs to energize his own base. Perhaps it can help him to get his populist mojo back.
And the theater just continues on and on …
But make no mistake about it, whichever candidate wins — be it Obama or Romney — things will continue right along this Neoliberal road we are on, and the firmly-entrenched 1% will have their man.
UPDATE:
Author edit: In response to commenter who questioned the validity of my statement re: Mitt Romney’s alleged support of gay-marriage when Governor of Massachusetts, and after further review myself, I have decided to remove the following statement: (he implemented same-sex marriage by executive fiat).

Obama has taken something out of his waste band folks, I don’t think the ref saw that!
Yes, yes, he’s rubbing it in Mitt’s eyes, the ref was looking the other way!
Folks, I don’t think Mitt can see properly…
… but no, that seems to be precisely what Mitt needed. Now he is MAD and REVVED UP and his fans are on their feet.
“Mitt can’t allow that ‘boy’ to do that,” his fans howl. He takes to the corner ropes and climbs up.
Stagecraft through and through.

Yes, and only in this country can this strategy work. Ya, the divide is widening and will only continue, so … he will use that same message to say “no, it wasn’t me“, … and it will work. (WTF!?!?!?)
This ain’t dystopia, it’s some weird bizzaro world of delusion. The worse things get, the base will become more steadfast in support of him, plug their ears, and shake their heads as they “serenity now, … I can’t hear you, … [repeat]“. And continue to blame the “other side”. Sure there are policy issues that libs and conservs disagree on. But on this steadfast loyalty and delusional magical-thinking, they are united. USA, USA, USA!
And we need a new name for liberals. Cause these liberals support wars without end (oh ya it’s a shame, but we have no choice they say, … peace through continual war, … hey that’s what conservs say), drone bombings, assassinations (we must have rule of law and justice, but certain people don’t deserve it they say, … and it’s best to let O decide that they say, … hey that’s what the conservs say), …
The list goes on.
BTW, many so-called progressives say the same. Veal-pen and beyond. Even here some will vote for O, (and frankly it’s their choice, … you go girl).
It’s almost like they put something in the water … you would think they would decriminalize POT so the populace would be more sedate (or at least have an avenue of escape from reality), … but that would get in the way of PHARMA profits (and the primary rule is that profit above all else). Not to mention, even without POT, the 1% have done just fine with their propaganda, and the populace is thoroughly sedate already with the reality TV, alcohol, and the number of PHARMA drugs you can get. AKA, it’s all good.
P.S. No way Romney wins this. O is the more effective evil, and, as he has shown, only he can truly gut SS and Medicare without effective pushback from the masses (and the 1% get a double-whammy score in that everyone will blame the Ds for this, … pure evil, but also smart).
And Romeny’s performance is so bad. He’s not even trying. Him and his staff are tanking themselves. This is worse than McCain and Wasilla Barbie. Even McCain’s “the economy is sound” mistake is nothing compared to Romney. Because Romeny makes worse ones every single week. It was amusing at first, but now it’s just bad comedy. What “mistake” will he make in the debates? “ya, I’m God, vote for me?” At this point, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Great post, and revealing of many uncomfortable truths. But I have two words: Supreme Court. Look back at 2000…. How’d that turn out?
One quibble: As I recall, Romney had nothing to do with marriage equality in MA, that was the courts, and he was vocally opposed.
Would that the imaginary Obama of the the Republican’s fever dreams were winning, instead of the lame old actual one.
Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it.
I had read about Governor Romney’s marriage equality stance in two articles, one being the American Thinker.
That author referenced a long well-sourced report by the Mass Resistance (some conservative group) who in 2006 put together a comprehensive list of conservative betrayals by Romney.
Since you wondered about the accuracy of that statement, you can look at that Mass Resistance document (many of their assertions seem to be sourced from Boston Globe, WSJ, etc). I do remember this being a hotly debated issue in Conservativeland, where RINO accusations were being thrown around and Romney’s ppl were denying or downplaying his positions.
LA Times recently did an article on Romney’s gay marriage stance, and from the impressions of that author, Romney seemed pretty waffly and politically expedient (like Obama) on the entire issue.
I usually embed links to prove most of the key assertions I make, in case people wonder about the source. I apologize for not doing that this time.
Yeah, it is ironic. Now each candidate depends on the other party to portray him in ways that make him credible to his own base. Democrats demagoguery of Romney makes Tea Party think “he’s not so bad after all.” And same for Obama. :)
Just embedded a link on the gay marriage statement so people can see where it came from.
One of the gripes of the Mass Resistance was that Romney struck Husband/Wife from the Marriage Certificate and put Party A, Party B.
When folks are wrong about the basic facts, it is hard to pay much attention to the conclusions they draw from them.
That is a frivolous complaint, as it is frankly hard to prove who was really behind its release. Jimmy Carter’s Grandson is alleged to have found it “from someone on Twitter,” and he describes himself as a Partisan Democrat who “did not get paid by the Obama campaign or a political organization for his role in exposing the tape, NBC News reported.”
You don’t have to be paid to be spending your days in one of Obama’s campaign offices, working the phones, interacting with paid staff, etc.
Just like Bush Campaign claimed they weren’t behind ‘swift boat’ efforts. Campaigns lie 24/7 and every claim they make regarding ‘explosive new videos’ and ‘October surprises’ are believed by no one.
With the exception of perhaps you.
Since you brought up that point, and after digging around, reading other’s opinions on what happened, I just decided to remove the statement.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Great post, CallUp…! ;-)
Wake the F*ck Up! – A Rebuttal…
Thanks CTuttle. That video is great! Excellent find!
Supreme Court what? You wouldn’t be referring to THAT Supreme Court — the one that is already filled with people making it a totally Corporate-dominated institution?
No better example exists than Kelo vs City of New London. In that case, a woman who owned her unpretentious dwelling was determined not to let the local country club expand its boundaries onto hers, and seize her home and property under eminent domain. At least, Kelo was determined to not let this happen without a fight.
And in their decision, the majority of the SCOTUS members ruled that it’s best to let those with the big bucks have whatever they want, ’cause after all, it’s a free market and ain’t life grand here in America especially if you are rich! Oh, and one other thing about that decision, it was the Republican Court Justices who actually were more favorable to the notion of a poor person being allowed to keep their home, especially in this case, because a country club is not really an example of a “needed” institution.
Also, Obama has already chosen two Supreme Court Justices, Sotomayor and Kagen, and both women were chosen on account of their love for Monsanto. That way all the Big Ag firms can rest assured that nothing will stop their frankenfood. Not us silly little activists, not researchers in other stinkin’ foreign countries like France, and certainly not some accessory to American Corporate life like th4e Supreme Court. Nothing will stop Mosnanto and the GM seeds and crops now.
Ah, the Supreme Court! The last ditch, last gasp effort of a Democrat to persuade those of us who used to be good Democrats that Obama is the least-damaging Fascist. Elisemattu above shows just how “progressive” the Obama appointees have been.
There is no longer any significant difference between the D’s and the R’s.
Nice try, though.
Rec’d.
No. Obama has become so confident that he now proclaims himself to be a “Blue Dog at heart,” which everyone who paid attention during his cabinet choices and first few months in office immediately realized. And he is now openly proclaiming his
eagernesswillingness to grand-bargain away some SS and Medicare benefits. Thanks!
actually, wrestling is more honest and interesting than the Presidential campaign.
Not a single liberal I know supports war(s).
Obama’s appointee, Kagan, and Clinton’s appointee, Bryer, voted with four Republican justices on the ACA in the second portion of the decision–the one Democrats seem to forget about.
Part of the ACA make more people eligible for Medicaid. To “encourage” states to accept that expansion, the ACA that states that do not make more people eligible for Medicaid will lose all Medicaid funds.
The Supreme Court held that the feds could not do that. So, the feds have no leverage now to get the states to expand Medicaid.
That means that people on welfare will have Medicaid and the people who can afford to pay will have health insurance. The folks in between those groups will have the shaft. I am not sure if they will have to pay the fine as well.
I have no idea why anyone thought the feds should not be able to decide the terms on which federal funds would be made available to the states.
Everyone seems to be of the view that that decision was a liberal one. I see it as 100% uber conservative.
Thank you for my laugh of the week. How true a remark it is, too.
We just watched the movie “Freakonomics.” There is an entire section of the documentary that relates to the corruption of Sumo Wrestling. People have been killed in Japan on account of the Japanese people’s need to see the Sumo wrestlers as sacred, This need of the Japanese sports fan to see his heroes as perfect moral sacred individuals means that the killing does not result in a murder investigation.
Why do the Japanese hold this belief? Even despite the fact that statistics do not lie. And that statistics show that there is a 75% odds in favor of the under dog winning any match once the underdog is almost approaching the 8.0 mark. This is in defiance of the norm that would be expected, of 50%. So we know that money or other favors are exchanging hands, with the underdog offering the accomplished wrestler something in exchange for winning the bout. But can the normal person in Japan say so? No, of course not.
So it goes here in our political sphere. The “liberals” will not listen to anyone saying that Obama is not the Supreme Perfect Example of Moral Perfection. The “liberals” blame the Republicans for Monsanto, for the BP crisis that destroyed our Gulf of Mexico, for the nuclear industry succeeding (this success despite what happened in Fukushima), and for the transfer of wealth from Main Street to Wall Street.
But in fact, all of this has been accomplished either directly by Obama, or else indirectly by his appointees in various agencies.
