From the World Socialist Web Site, as reported by David Brown:
On Tuesday evening, the general assembly of Occupy UC Davis passed a resolution denouncing the attack on Davis students, calling for a break with the Democratic Party and the construction of an independent social and political movement of the entire working class.
The resolution, the first of its kind adopted at an Occupy protest, lays out a clear political perspective to counter the growing attacks on protests against inequality in the United States. It comes a week and a half after the brutal pepper spraying of unarmed students protesting against rising tuition and inequality.

Good news. My understanding is that they are one of the few ows ga that operate by majority rule.
When is the chancellor going, and the pay taken away from the police most involved in the pepper spraying?
Amen to that, Bear Country.
swwwweeeeeeeetttttttt
Thank you
You can say that again! Let’s hope this becomes an #Occupy trend…
Very good news indeed; although it should be pointed out only 70 people voted while tens of thousands have been involved in the Oakland demonstrations and protests. It would be good to hear more of the demonstrators stating these sentiments through speeches, signs and leaflets.
Also good to hear that in Oakland it is majority decision making and not the needed consensus thresh-hold most OWS General Assemblies still seem to require.
“calling for a break with the Democratic Party and the construction of an independent social and political movement of the entire working class.”
I haven’t read the link yet, but my heart started pounding with excitement when I saw that….now on to the link!
All the Occupy “chapters” should make the same resolution.
Yup, same line where my heart leapt :)
“The way forward is clear: No support should be given to either of the two parties! The dictates of the banks and corporations can be countered only through the independent social and political struggle of the entire working class.”
Makes my day! The legacy parties have destroyed and are destroying the country. All we have to do to get rid of them is ignore them.
Hear! Hear!
It’s unfortunate that the release of this story flirted with the “Friday news dump.” Please recommend this diary to keep it prominent, and send any of the following three links to your mailing list to keep the word spreading!

I doubt that the chancellor is going anywhere. Heard on the teevee machine last night that the Board of Regents met and the results were: tuition hikes of 16-23%; salary hikes of 6.3-16% for a few (7 or 8) administrators of the UC system. (Wouldn’t surprise me if UC-Davis chancellor is among those to be rewarded for such stellar ‘management.’

Hey, with no frigging third party candidate anywhere near a snowball’s chance in hell of winning in 2012, let’s abandon the field to the Republicans so we can have a full on all out civil war!!!!
Any of you idiot turkeys ever read the Asimov short story Nightfall?
“All the Occupy “chapters” should make the same resolution.”
I would qualify that, lechero, to read “all the Occupies should consider the same resolution.
This is a very important first step that is consistent with the “99%” mantra. In the same way that the Republican party proved itself not a true representative body for conservatives, so has the Democratic party not been able to represent the proud heritage of our memorable past political struggles. Neither one is viable; both should be called out. We should be done with the entire sorry system.
In a better world we would be able to front two new parties to replace the old singleparty masquerading as two. That might be a bridge too far for the present moment in time, which is why “99%” is so very important. It is not only one party we need to decry as nonrepresentational; it is both. That means we have to be very inclusive with respect to former Republican followers as well as former Democrat followers. And that’s why I say, let each GA have its own inclusive national referendum style resolutions. E pluribus unum.
There are issues on which those of us who had admired the ideals of the Democratic Party agree with those of us who had admired the ideals of the Republican Party. It is the issues which give us solidarity, common ground. We will only succeed if we discuss what is important for change at the level of the country as a whole, rather than what is divisive.
In that respect this is a political revolution. As the sham parties combine to defeat us, we must combine, respecting our differences, to defeat them. And bravo to Occupy Davis for shining the light in these dark days!
Anthony, this is very exciting. I want the Dems, my party, to finally get the whole picture – that we are tired of this and will do what needs to be done.
The left has to do to the Democrats what the teabaggers have done to the Republicans. The more defeats of DLC/Third Way/DSCC/DCCC types that we can take credit for, the better.
‘Tis better to be feared than ignored.
The Democrats alreay abandoned the field to Republicans. That’s why we have Bush’s wars, Bush’s tax cuts, Romney’s health “reform”, and Putin’s civil liberties. Hmm..well, I guess Putin isn’t a Republican.
Occupy Minnesota did something similar.
We decided that there was no support for any political party. It was not as specific in naming the Dems but that was the intention.
I was not involved in that GA, so ya can’t blame me all you Dem apologists out there.
Grin
Then run candidates. It’s not a joke or an illusion or a figment of your imagination, a thing to scoff at, or something within your power to change that this coming year is a presidential year. You’ve done nothing and some of us do vote. We won’t vote for Republicans, so get to fucking work if you don’t want us to vote for Democrats.
I think you’ll get a kick out of this:

Well with Diane Feinstein’s sweetie Richard Blum on the Board of Regents, what else can you expect?
And I am sure the Blum/Feinstein dynasty is busy figuring out how the mass imprisonment of anyone who is part of OWS will add to their revenue. They love being invested in Banks and Real Estate -and some of the banks are now real keen on investing in the prison industry.
“Any of you idiot turkeys ever read the Asimov short story Nightfall?”
Gobble gobble … I read the story … what it has to do with this post I don’t know … Gobble gobble.
I do think the psychohistorian from Asimov’s Foundation trilogy would have a field day.
Anthony, good news and recommended. Thanks.
“You’ve done nothing”
I think the best point in allan’s reply is “‘Tis better to be feared than ignored.” That is something that OWS has started.
What have you done (besides voting)?
“Bush’s wars”
The ones Obama expanded, before starting his own?
“Bush’s tax cuts”
The ones Obama extended?
“Romney’s health “reform””
That Obama made nation-wide, and mandatory?
“Putin’s civil liberties”
Like the Patriot Act, that Obama extended? Interesting side-note: the biggest opponent to the extension was Republican freshman Rand Paul of Kentucky.
People who reflexively blame everything on the GOP simply serve — involuntarily or otherwise — to provide cover for Democratic scumbags, and vice versa.
Gee… You think maybe that’s why nothing changes?
Thank you.
Berkely supplanted.
move along, nothing to see here – just ondelette the concern troll…
The fact is that Jill Stein and Rocky Anderson are both viable choices – which she must ignore to have any prayer of convincing others she’s right. Which she is not.
Thanks all for your comments today. Must apologize for being away from the Internets all day – but if I’m completely honest, the day off was welcome.
Again, sincere thanks to all who chimed in. (Yes, ondelette, you too :)
Can they win? Or are they just John Anderson and Ralph Nader? It’s up to you not their pretty faces to make them into something that can win. You, the last time I checked, were out blaming the voters themselves for the fact that they wouldn’t pull levers for third parties. Have you set up campaigns for them? Are you stumping for them? Do you have a strategy for getting them on all 50 ballots? Getting them before the voters? Getting them organized messages? Putting them up as however you’re going to run them?
Concern troll bah! You’re the concern troll Anthony. You have zilch for a viable method. You go to other peoples’ diaries and comment on how Larue shouldn’t promote them. You comment on who is and isn’t genuine comments. You base it all on agreement to your agenda. But votes? You don’t know how to get them and you won’t have a candidate by election time. And then you’ll fall back on foolproof excuses — the voters were too machine head to pull that third party lever — to justify your loss. Well it’s time to call yours and everyone elses here bluff. You don’t have the slightest idea how to turn your crap into action. But anyone who mentions that is a “concern troll”. You phony piece of activist tripe.
Commended and recommended.
There’s another Richard Blum connection to OWS in San Diego lawsuit filed over arrest of Democrat registering voters near OWS area at Civic Center Plaza — it’s kind of convoluted:
DING! DING! DING!
We and our allies have done – and continue to do – waaaaay more than you, ondelette. But good luck with that managing-your-baseless-anger thing!
You ask for candidates, I name them, not good enuf for you. Move those goalposts, Stepford Dem!
Just because our brand of activism doesn’t fit into your narrow definition of it – or into the narrow corporate-owned process you so egregiously support – doesn’t make it any less activist. Some (they being the intelligent) would argue it’s the truest activism of all.
Move along.
