As Al Jazeera, the Jill Stein campaign and The Times of India are reporting (and even much-less-trustworthy corporate mouthpieces like CNN and the NYT are confirming), the democratically elected president of Maldives has been forced to resign in a coup, and warrants have been issued for his arrest.
As Stein noted in a separate statement referenced near the end of her campaign office’s press release (linked above):
“This week, as Obama was embracing corporate money [a reference to the U.S. president trying to explain away his SuperPAC], his State Department welcomed the military coup in the Maldives, which removed from office democratically-elected President Nasheed, one of world’s most vocal critics of climate change. Big oil is happy to see him gone. First Honduras, now the Maldives. So much for a foreign policy that promotes democracy and human rights.”
Alert Firepups knew this was coming two days ago, thanks to this diary. The petition it references is still up at the 350.org web site. I urge you to sign it and get this administration’s silent partnership in this travesty more widely publicized.
Thank you.

Signed.
I wonder if the CIA helped with this coup?
It is hard to see the fossil fuel industries not being involved.
I should not be surprised at this given the recent deal to free the bankers from prosecution and the expansion of nuclear energy (starting in my state of Georgia) that assiduously ignores Japan’s tragedy, but I am still surprised.
How can a Nobel Peace Prize Winner come down so hard against civil rights and the environment? Why do environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club say “Kudos to Obama” and limit their most extreme criticism to saying they might work for Obama, but maybe with slightly less enthusiasm? Why does the NRDC and Robert Redford urge me to write thank you notes to Obama? Why would anybody with a grievance send it to this White House?
As Anthony says, the 350 petition is still there while the corporate media ignores this story. Afterwards if we want change or even a decent future then it lies with Jill Stein, Darcy Richardson, Rocky Anderson, the Greens, the Justice Party, the New Progressive Alliance, or whatever your favorite path is. It also lies in cooperating with each other on common goals and not looking for reasons to fight. It most assuredly does not lie in continuing to blindly support democrats.
When it comes to the way the US doesn’t like real democracy in action, notice that in Libya, Gaddafi appears to have had the support of a majority of citizens, and that in Syria Assad seems to have the support of a majority of citizens, and that in Venezuela Chavez seems to have the support of a majority of citizens, and that even Ahmadinejad seems to have the support of a majority in Iran, yet all these countries have undergone ‘regime change’ or are slated for it.
Great examples all, Imka. We love love love democracy, provided it enriches, expands, and provides repeat business for the MIC. You can’t sell new bombs until you’ve created demand by exploding the current inventory…
Really? I don’t! :)
Anthony, I’ve recommended this, but is it possible for you to change the heading to reflect the subject? Something with Jill Stein’s name in it plus the Maldives would be excellent, and I am sure you would get more comments.
I only suggest this because your points are right on, but some may not realize the subject of your post. Amy did an excellent job of coverage on this, along with a Bill McKibben interview, and it is really important.
I just did a comment about distractions on another posting that has probably ruffled some feathers here. This is so much what we need to be talking about!
Obviously Obama & the UN accepting the illegal coup immediately signals the Administration’s involvement in and instigation of the takeover. The new “President” imposed by Obama operates a Maldives anti-drug front group for the US DEA: Journey.

And about the fossil fuel industry’s involvement: Obama has repeatedly sent Pipeline/Fracking/Shale Gas proponent Robert Blake to intimidate Nasheed.
Blake is there again now. That Obama would even appoint such sleaze as his Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia indicates his intent to block the advancement of climate science with an iron hand.
Here’s an open letter from Sri Lanka, Maldives’ neighbor, to Blake demanding that he stop intimidating their Government:

Geographically, if you look where the Maldives are located on a map you can see the significance of WHY the MIC would want them, errr…want “their guy” installed there. I’m sure it all has something to do with the Asia/Pacific Free Trade Agreement and the surrounding of US military installations around China in an effort to have strategic advantage over China. I guess the paranoid F*cks running our military (and WH) who, obviously,is on board, deem it necessary to instigate something with China or whatever the hell. Occasionally, You hear about war with China and WW3, maybe this is Obama helping to lay the groundworks for it to actually happen. (Sorry if this sounds paranoid, but maybe)
The brochure on Freedom I read indicates that the United States, Freedom’s Fiercest Friend, will neither recognize nor tolerate this new government because it is illegitimate.
