Among our most precious freedoms is Freedom of Speech and especially its public expression, Freedom of the Press, both enshrined in the First Amendment, described as: "Our blueprint for personal freedom and the hallmark of an open society."
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
— The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
Few individuals have sacrificed so much, nor worked so tirelessly in its free expression, in my view, as Marcy Wheeler, who blogs as emptywheel. Without any more (till now) than her free time, her computer and a commendable group of faithful followers, she has exposed and carefully documented many issues over the years, but none so consequential as her current efforts to trace the memos, players, and events surrounding the bush regime’s interlocked crimes and misdemeanors – with regard to torture, a war of aggression in Iraq, secret renditions, and the secret, pernicious machinations underlying them.
And why do I bring this up today? Because today in New York Ms. Wheeler receives a prestigious award for her journalistic endeavors, an award she richly deserves.
But it’s not the sole reason for this blog. This blog is a tribute to free speech and to this one woman, Ms. Wheeler, who chooses to maintain her independence in order to speak freely. In order to write freely.
At this point I imagine that Marcy could command a great sum, working for some media empire. But she chooses not to do that. She chooses instead to depend upon the donations of people who view her work as vital to our current efforts to unearth, investigate, and bring redress for crimes committed by the highest officials of the land. She may have other ends in mind. But of that one I am certain.
I do not know Marcy Wheeler in person. But I think I have read enough and observed enough to draw some positive conclusions about her and her work. Enough to have donated twice already to help fund her efforts. Enough to donate a third time. In honor of those efforts, on this day of public honor for her and her work.
Marcy, emptywheel, EW for short, has a Ph.D. in what I would term political literature – the kind of underground political writing that circulated in Eastern Europe before they separated from Russia and became democracies. She’s a careful reader. She can read between the lines. She meticulously documents her discoveries and analyzes them with reference to other events, persons, and political currents. She is open to new ideas and new information. She has inspired others to assist her and she maintains a single-minded focus on her goals, writing blogs, sometimes at such a fast clip it takes your breath away. Responding to comments in the threads, encouraging deeper digging by those who read and comment there. Exercising, though longtime followers, both an openness to new readers, a focus on the work, and an ability to keep distractions to a minimum. It’s a very healthy, open system at her blog, and I think I have some professional expertise to make that judgment.
So I write to praise Marcy Wheeler. I write to praise her many abilities. But above all, I write to praise her selflessness, her ability to resist selling herself to the highest bidder, her focus, in short, on freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Her blog, in my view, being her press. In a day when many of the so-called "best and brightest" demand rights beyond the common person, Marcy stands out. She is not an "elitist" – thank god! She can’t be bought! Thank god for that too.
So if you are a lover of freedoms – as am I – if you esteem those who seek to exercise and defend our freedoms, if you prize writing which is free of any constraints save the truth and a desire that the truth be told, investigated, and justice upheld, then I invite you this very day to join with me in assisting Marcy’s work in whatever way you can. Perhaps you can only add your voice to this thread. Or perhaps you can open your wallet and make a donation here.
Marcy Wheeler intends to spend the next year focused solely on this work. She will do this without funds from any source that could taint her work. She will do some traveling, to blog at Congressional hearings for example. She will hire an assistant. That’s it. She is one driven lady! And I stand in awe not just of her talents and her drive, but of her selfless dedication to writing freely. Her dedication to bringing to light what has been hidden. What has tarnished this nation in so many ways. One person – trying to do her civic duty.

I meant to note that I have cross-posted this at TPM Cafe. I hope it gets a wide readership. And a wider group of donors.
Donation link does not work above. Can someone fix it for me?
Or the link is here: https://secure.firedoglake.com/page/contribute/MarcyWheeler
Great tribute, TheraP.
It will be a joy to behold just how productive Marcy is going to be with full time to devote to her efforts, along with an assistant.
I found the “edit” button! The donation link now works! I’m so relieved! Otherwise, folks might have gone and given to the Hillman Foundation, thinking it would benefit Marcy!
Yes, Jim, she’s gonna leave us in the dust!
I wish every good thing for Marcy! I feel she is vital to our Republic!
Marcy is a gem and I am in awe of her mind. I hope she enjoys her writing as much as we enjoy reading. And the award is so well deserved. The Lake is proud of her.
I think her doctorate is formally in comparative literature from the U of M. I also think that you’ve captured her novel focus, the political literature of dissent in Eastern Europe and Latin America, oddly appropriate for dissenting from what passes for leadership, governance and journalism inside the beltway in today’s Washington, DC. Many thanks for your articulate support of the new Izzy Stone.
Thanks for the clarification of her field. I’m virtually certain that she did her dissertation on the samizdat dissent writings, IIRC what she once told me. So I felt ok enough to write it up as I did. There is no doubt she is uniquely suited to this work. Who could ever have anticipated we’d be analyzing a US administration in terms of a totalitarian mind-set? Marcy can read the runes!
Nice. Thanks for posting this tribute. Marcy is my must-read no matter how crazed the day becomes. Educational, enlightening, refreshingly candid, and wonderfully supportive of our unique blog-centered community.
Thanks for the great post, TheraP. I donated a small amount today ($25). Actually my fiance donated $25..I’m still unemployed. I wish we could give more but we just don’t have spare cash right now. Even when we were both employed it was tough, but now it’s impossible. I hope those who haven’t donated yet will do so today because Marcy does a great job for all of us.
That is a huge sum, given your financial situation. Even $5 or $10 is not too small – no one should feel ashamed of a smallish sum. Nor should anyone feel ashamed if they cannot contribute money. Many contribute comments. We all contribute good will. Having also posted this at TPM, where it’s now up on the front page, I simply hope that some, who may not realize the connection between a “free press” and the name Marcy Wheeler, nor realize there’s a campaign ongoing, may feel prompted to assist this National Treasure – being housed at FDL. It’s a day for congratulations all around!
Just the other day, Mr. TheraP was listening to NPR and heard someone talk about the blogs and how people can’t lie any more, without it showing up on the blogs. Change may be happening too slowly for many of us. But change is occurring. Bloggers, like Marcy, and others here and elsewhere, are making a difference, if ever so slowly.
You are to be commended for your gift!
Thanks TheraP but I don’t need to be commended, after all it’s just money. Marcy is the one who should be commended for the great work she does day in and day out. I only wish that I could give more.
Did everyone see that Sibel Edmonds has started a blog called Project Expose MSM? I love it. I wrote a post about it today. I also wrote about David Boies and Ted Olsen teaming up to challenge Prop 8.
Thanks for the link to that great blog – a place for whistleblowers’ storeis! I’ve bookmarked it!
Gosh, what a great catch that Olsen and Boise are teaming up!
I love good news! That’s one of the reasons I was so happy to write this post.
I’m heading into new york right now as I turn off the computer, hope to see some of you at the award
Thanks for the nice tribute to Marcy. I know her & she is all of the things you described… plus a great cook & beer lover! :) I donated to the cause a couple of weeks ago.
I’m glad you added the personal touches! And pleased that I’ve captured her well enough to satisfy someone who knows her. It proves how one’s personality comes across through one’s writing, one’s interactions with others on a blog, the kind of people drawn to a blogger. All of it speaks so highly of Marcy. She deserves every tribute. I’m sure the one today is not her last.
Thanks for writing about Marcy. She is one of my heroines.
I truly admire who she is and what she stands for and gladly join the chorus of people who ask for donations for her to continue her most important work.
Donated when Marcy and Jane decided to do the Scooter Libby book. I have donated 3 times for this because Marcy is well worth supporting. I will probably provide more support in the future too!
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of bold projects and new ideas. Rather, it will belong to those who can blend passion, reason and courage in a personal commitment to the ideals of American society.
–Robert F Kennedy
TheraP, great work!
I am pledged to giving FDL $20/month. Half of that goes to Marcy.
I’ve also kicked in another $75 as a one-time to Marcy’s fund.
For me right now, that’s sustainable. In the future, I’d like to do a lot more.
Kudos to you. There’s something wonderful about underwriting quality, isn’t there?
I’m gonna navel gaze fer a minute (if I may)
I’ve known the truth, the whole fuckin truth, an nothin but the fuckin truth, since about 1989, or so, whenever I “bought in” to the whole “constitution thingy”. george herbert walker bush was the guy who made me sit up and pay attention. That was before the putz bungled the whole Iraq fiasco, from beginning to end, and he was “the Beginning” of the Iraq fiasco. Him an his ambassador to Iraq were the doofus duo who fucked up in the first place
So I became politically aware. I watched crossfire, and :inside politics” and anything else I could to gleen information. I learned what really goes on. The repuglitard revolution, culminating in the Clinton impeachment really burned my ass. but I was afraid of the innertoobz
Even before September 11, 2001, george bush never fooled me once. I knew about the Iraq invasion in November of 2001, I knew abut the torture about the same time, apparently before it actually happened. I just knew it would happen, and that george would get caught with his dick in the crack. I could just see it in his face, and dick cheney’s absence of a human heart. I predicted every fucking mistake that george bush could make, before he made it. And I watched the “so called journalists” fail to call george on his fuckups EVERY TIME. failure to send enough troops, failure to secure Turkey’s cooperation (like he was gonna get Turkey to agree to that shit), the whole idea of “shock and awe” (what if they ain’t shocked and awed ???)
The invasion of Iraq and a dedicated Political Science Professor drove me to the innertoobz at last. I was pretty worldly before 9-11. I could name the 7 “Stans” and find em on a map. I knew more about the world than most Americans. I was prepared for a bit of misinformation, and honest mistakes on the part of the press, after 9-11. But the amount of pure bullshit and propaganda being spewed on television was unbearable. george’s folly changed me forever. I ventured onto teh toobz, met some people, wandered into DKOS one day, and I finally found some similar views about george’s invasion
but george wasn’t done with me yet.
The outing of a NOC agent was almost beyond belief to me. Thanks to my new friends on the innertoobz, I knew the implications of novakula’s article within hours of it’s publication, and I wasn’t very happy about it. That a President could destroy a valuable secret asset to settle a political score was treason. But it happened. I do not consider the matter settled, and I still have an unsated desire for justice. But that led me to Marcy
what a long strange trip it’s been. whodathunkit, back in the summer of 2003; that one of the sane voice I found in the wilderness would rise to the top of the journalist innertoobz. there were times, early during the lulls in the Plame case, that I wondered why I subscribed to emptywheel at DKOS. Then a subpoena would be issued, or a leak would come out, and I would spend a few hours reading Marcy’s post and digesting the analysis, then it would hit me: this is why I subscribed.
When EW moved to TNH, I followed her, and I tried to participate in the other THN bloggers’ threads. But I just didn’t have the passion for their issues. Plame consumed me.
Marcy kept me sane during that time
she is my Muse. My silver lining, as it stands
thru the libby trial, the move to FDL, and now to the heights of achievement, I grew addicted to Marcy’s deep analysis. I became passionate about stuff I would never care much about (Detroit owes her a lot), but I still remain focused on what I see as the ultimate treason and betrayal do America. Now Marcy is tearing apart the cancer that threatens my country
I’ve been behind her since about July of 2003. Some people call me rude, vulgar, unnecessary, and just flat crazy. But nobody denies I’m her most ardent defender.I do it because I can’t articulate the argument as well as she does (an I’m too lazy to do all the documentation and citation that she does). I know things, but I can’t explain them and prove them in a manner that comes anywhere near Marcy’s ability to do so I can just tell ya that the bushies waterboarded the shit outta people. Marcy can tell you who when, where, an how many times
I gotta respect that. I believe its what we used to call journalism
we’re saying the same thing, but nobody can argue the point when Marcy says it. But that doesn’t stop some idiots from trying (and that’s where I come in,(wink))
now we got a group, or a gaggle, or a blooger family, or whatever the hell we call it. And our “Don” just got blessed by the ??? (I don’t have any concept of what we could call it), but we’re a “Made Family” now. We got a seat on the international innertoobz syndicate council, or somethin. We’re BIG TIME now
the way I see it, Marcy is A Prototype (one of many) of the future of journalism. Dead tree media is over. the new generation of news consumers is electronic and wireless. people like Marcy, Markos, Josh Marshal, and Digby will be the Pulitzer an Hearst of the electronic media
It took a patriot named Markos Moulitsas Zúniga to finally create a place where we could give voice to the anger and anguish we felt back in 2003. I found a lot of sane voices there along with Marcy
Perhaps I don’t thank our primary host, Jane Hampsher, enough, so I’d like to thank her now.
THANK YOU JANE.
I was present in real-time when her an Kos locked horns. I know most of the history of the FDL site. I remember when Christy came over (she’ll always be redhead to me). I’ve read TBOGG, and I love Campaign silo. Blue America is great, an I guess Oxdown is cool too (since I;m here). but that pretty much encapsulates my interaction with the other appendages to Marcy’s blog. They’re great, but I’m a dedicated “wheelie”. I was a “wheelie” when I got here, an I’ll be a “wheelie” when ya carry me out (feet first, hopefully, either way, it won’t be quiet)
now this place is gonna change. I doubt many 20-something kids are influenced by a Hillman Award. But they’re looking for voices that speak the truth. They know what is really going on. Today’s “next generation” is way more politically aware than I was at that age (and I was a rather well informed youth, an anomaly in my generation) Thousands, or millions of people of all ages are gonna discover Marcy, cuz they’re tired of being bullshitted by people pretending to be journalists
so maybe we can call FireDogLake an experiment in “neo-journalism” or something??? All I know is I’m gonna try to learn what the word “moderation” means, an clean up my act, so we look almost respectable er sumtin on teh innertoobz. but don’t any of you trolls think you can come back to life. I’ll still be the on-site “button man”. I’m just gonna get better at hidin the bodies
congratulations Marcy
I always knew you was special
I’m glad other people get to find out too
an for those who took the naval gazing thing literally an love details, it’s an “innie”
