George Will proves yet again that only a Conservative Intellectual can talk about the history of the ideological realignment of the Republican party in the 20th century *without even once mentioning the subject of race*. (What exactly was the "overreaching" on the part of Democrats after 1964, George? Does the term "Southern Strategy" mean anything to you, George?)
Given who just won the frickin’ presidency, this is, uh, hilarious, especially in the context of Will whining about the lack of any sort of "intellectual rebirth" on the part of conservatives right now.
I’d suggest the GOP seriously consider becoming a post-bigot party, but given how proud they are of horrible stuff like "winning" on Prop 8, I don’t think they’re even remotely close to perceiving what’s blindingly obvious to everyone else in the entire world.

At a moment in history when Conservatism has been thoroughly discredited, its adherents exposed as intellectually bankrupt, the country is in shambles at their hands for the past 8 years — can you tell me why my teevee is full of them telling us what we should think about this election?
The reason we have those calamities is because, no matter what the reality is, our teevees are always full of these people mis-explaining it. That’s mostly why it happened.
So you would support my constitutional amendment that when we sweep a bunch of bankrupt old farts out of elective office, we get to eject the similarly brain-free trash from the teevee sets too?
Um, profits for MSM?
Because THEY own the media at the moment. Sad but true.
At the moment???
When have they not owned the media?
When have they not owned everything, including people?
Take a look at that map again and let’s decide where the next round of base closings and government belt tightening should be centered.
I say we start with Fort Sill and radiate north and east and south and south east.
That’s good for the first hundred days.
I think this election was perfect.
Plus, the part when they keep telling Obama what he needs to do…as if he needs it and as if they have good ideas. So why didn’t those ideas work?
The GOP is persisting in their old mistakes they think the Financial Crisis, the War and government spending sank Bush.
Never mind that they supported Deregulating the financial industry. Never mind that they supported the war which led to Bush’s big government. Cause the cash sure wasn’t going to Lefty programs.
Never mind that when you govern with only a 51% majority you need to swing votes by offering pork sweeteners to get hard bills passed to get that extra 1%.
Never mind that by financing the war on debt Bush devalued the Dollar which certainly helped cause the financial crisis.
Never mind that Bush fought the war on the cheap and all the NeoCons applauded the GOP swore we could win with less troops than General Shinseki said we needed. How many years did it take before Bush decided to Surge the troop levels? By then the war was lost.
Of course the GOP does not see their own hand in Bush’s failure’s which Doomed McCain Failure is never acknowledged in the GOP.
Nope its all Compartmentalized in a Compartment that they never open.
By the way we want the GOP to persist in their mistakes as long as possible their only card is that Obama will fail.
Its up to Obama to do whats necessary to get the Country in good shape if Obama listens to the 30%ers and compromises then he deserves to lose in 4 years.
Obama needs to read what FDR did to get us out of the Great Depression.
If the GOP complains we say 8 years of Bush DID NOT WORK!
FDR got us out of the Great Depression this way and IT WORKED!
Any Questions?
Thanks Thers.

where there’s a Will there’s a wail.
“Have I told you lately that I love you?” *G*
You took the words right out of my mouth, uh my keyboard. *g*
Where there’s a Will there will be Hell toupee.
LOL just perfect.
It is probably causing his brain to overheat. He should ditch the rug and don a propeller beanie. Might also boost his perceived gravitas, such as it is.
Where’s darkblack? I can only imagine that image from him.
I can envision a whole comic strip based on the concept of George Will flying around the Beltway via his propeller beanie…
He always looks like his mommy just combed his hair and brushed him off before sending him off to private school. The beanie would be excellent – it would be on a level with his thinking.
Yeah, we never see him below the waist. I can see him wearing schoolboy short pants and knee socks.
You just know that he would be the boy who tattled.
Pompous little twit.
Or blame some other kid for something he’d done.
Raven reminded me recently that Will was spawned in my neck of the woods. Will predates me, though, so I accept no responsibility for his imbecility.
Wonder if he can play guitar as well as Angus Young of AC/DC in that outfit.
Okeydokey, you are now on my “love” list.
I am indeed honored.
but given how proud they are of horrible stuff like “winning” on Prop 8, I don’t think they’re even remotely close to perceiving what’s blindingly obvious to everyone else in the entire world.
fine by me.
Enjoy your years in the wilderness, GOP. Maybe we’ll see you again in fifteen or twenty years.
By which time America will have collectively changed its phone number.
“Don’t call us, we’ll call y…”
no – we won’t.
Yesterday Ron and I were taking a walk and two little mormon boys road up on their bikes. Ron told them to go away and that we wanted nothing to do with them. I told them I don’t talk to people who discriminate against the gay. They were horrified but told us to have a nice day through clinched teeth.
I sort of felt guilty for a nanosecond. Then I decided I wasn’t going to be nice to people would are delusional and messing with people I love.
Jehovah’s Witnesses come by my house regularly. They have an enormous farm/printing plant about 7 miles down the road from me. The minute they pull in the driveway, I tell them I’m not interested and they politely drive on.
I am about as far from religious as a human can be, but my son’s first babysitter was a Witness, and no more responsible person could ever be found. She still calls me from time-to-time. She’s much better at keeping in touch than I am.

These boys were responsible for putting the Yes on Eight signs all over my neighborhood. They worked to get an amendment to the California constitution so that 10% of the population cannot get married. It passed.
I wanted to ask them if they were wearing their magical underwear. If I sound bitter, I am.
Gotcha. Ski in Utah 1 or 2 times/year and when I worked at Goldman Sachs there was a Mormon group very powerful in SoCal. So I am familiar with the species.
One thing to watch out for: neocons return to Ds because they are the party now in power. Not saying it’ll happen, just raising the caution.
Good point.. they will suck up to power and look for them to do the chameleon thingy. Weren’t many of them former dems?
Scoop Jackson Ds, and Troyskyites before that. Perfect for a milataristic D.

Naomi Klein talks about right wing Trots having a lot of money and left wing Trots having to sell their newspapers on corners to make money.
Don’t remember that from Klein, but was very impressed by They Knew They Were Right, which is a road map for how they did/will succeed. Trying to figure out the next chapture beyond where the book ended.

She was speaking at U of Chicago in late Sep or early Oct against naming their new research institute after Friedman. DN carried it. Definitely worth watching.
A lot of them were Dems before they were neocons. Kristol, et al, switched because we pulled out of Nam. Kristol made a comment once about if neoconservativism became unpopular they’d just call themselves neoliberals.
I chalk it up to the death throes of neoconservativism. They’re going to get uglier as they become more irrelevant.
The hardcore fundamentalists are flipping out; even suggesting that maybe Obama should be given a chance to prove himself provoke outrage:

“Conservative Intellectual”
Having mulled that over, I’m pretty sure it’s an oxymoron.
You got it! Bobo Broks, Bill Kristol(nacht), and Lucianne Goldberg’s hellspawn are no more intellectual than the average VFW commander. They should all move to Wasilla. And I for one would be every happy if Alaska severed its ties with the United States.
As Gore Vidal reminds us the Republican party is not a rational political entity at all but a cult of war and money. It is also thoroughly racist from top to bottom
The only difference between the GOP and the KKK is the higher thread-count of their sheets!
