The newspaper, which is independent from the U.S. armed forces, polled some 3,000 active duty troops and found a steep decline in opposition to a repeal. In 2004, the Times found 65 percent of troops resisted a repeal; today, that figure stands at 51 percent. At the time time, active duty troops who explicitly favor a repeal rose, from 24 percent to 30 percent.

John McCain its moral, and WRONG for America to keep treating American solders who serve our country like they were illegal immigrants.
Its also wrong for America to keep treating illegals like they were Jews before Hitler rounded them up and demanding anyone suspected of being illegal produce ID papers.

Its is a sad sign of the times that President Truman had the Stones to desegregate the army even though I’m sure the poll numbers were much more worse. Truman did not need polls or approval Jon you Pathetically Desperate to be Popular Worm! Truman he Led! Truman had a pair!

The same Bullshit arguments about unit cohesion, morale etc were used against African Americans and against Woman serving.

You would think John McCain would have realized that the Conservative position is wrong by now.

Real World experience should trump belief once that belief has been disproved. Don’t the British let gays serve? Didn’t Bush let into the army felons, gang bangers, and racists just to get enough troops to go to Iraq?

It’s okay, I have a few acronyms in my own head that I pronounce phonetically instead of spelling out — and that’s how I end up mistyping them. I suspect you do the same thing.

Like mentally hearing “dahdt” with A pronounced like that in “father” and processing in writing as the German O instead.

In the Army, more convicted felons can be all they can be too, as all branches of the military relaxed their standards allowing 861 felons to join the ranks in 2007, according to data released April 21 by the Congressional Oversight Committee.

From arsonists, to burglars to car thieves, each branch of the military saw a rise in waivers extended to convicted felons in an effort to meet the needs of war.

Last year Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chair of the Oversight Committee sent a letter to Under Secretary of Defense David Chu that requested documentation on the sharp increase in personnel conduct waivers, which allow the enlistment of U.S. service members who would otherwise be precluded by recruitment standards.

Doesn’t McCain have a nearly perfect record opposing veterans benefits and higher pay for the military? Why is he an authority on supporting the troops welfare?

The 1994 “Don’t ask, don’t tell” law was passed while former president Bill Clinton was in office and was seen at the time as a compromise to a complete ban. Civil rights advocates have fought against the bill for years.

The policy has cost taxpayers between $290 million to $500 million since its inception, according to a study released this year by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law. The military spends an estimated $22,000 to $43,000 per person to replace people who are discharged, the study showed. An estimated 4,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual military members would have been retained each year had the policy not been in place, the study shows.

Veterans Groups Give McCain Failing Grades. In its most recent legislative ratings, the non-partisan Disabled American Veterans gave Sen. McCain a 20 percent rating for his voting record on veterans’ issues. Similarly, the non-partisan Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a “D” grade for his poor voting record on veterans’ issues, including McCain’s votes against additional body armor for troops in combat and additional funding for PTSD and TBI screening and treatment.

Without Empathy for others can you truly be said to have a soul? Just what should society do with people like that?
Our current strategy of locking up poor ones when they commit crimes seems sound what else can we do?
But our policy of letting rich ones become CEO’s, Senators and even President because no rich person is ever allowed to fall to their natural level is destroying the country

Jon McCain needs a job working alone in locked room with no sharp objects, Bush should be bagging groceries at Jewel.

We test regular people for drugs why not test CEO’s and Politicians to see if they are sane? Any bets on what Rep Michelle Bachman or Sarah Palin would rate on the drug and crazy scale?

Just what drugs and how many different mental disorders do they have? Paranoid, Psychopath, Attention Deficit Disorder, pathological liar these all come to my mind. I wonder what drugs or combination of drugs could produce the same results?

The continued DADT policy makes Phoenix Woman’s article on Stop Loss pay especially ironic. I’m sure that the gay soldiers who were willing to serve wouldn’t have completely negated the need for SL, but it’s undoubtedly true that some had to be kept in the service to fill jobs that might have been willingly done by gay servicemembers.
