Barack Obama has been called everything from a gun-hating, closet-Muslim hiding socialist to a big-government loving, deficit exploding, tax increasing, class-warfare waging liberal elitist. He’s been compared to Hitler and denounced for wanting to destroy capitalism and/or America. He pals around with terrorists. They say he wasn’t born in America and secretly hates white people.
For partisan Democrats, the Right’s diluge of attacks on Obama over the years might be seen as a great gift, as it has understandably painted conservatives who echo these sentiments as laughably crazy (or brilliant propagandists adept at appealing to the fears of their base). But for those that get their news from outside the right-wing echo chamber, the truth of these smears is well understood. Criticism from MSNBC or the mainstream left on the other hand has been largely shallow or non-existent (although I confess I rarely watch any mainstream TV to keep score).
But from what I have seen, I’ve observed a great tragedy, as this partisan jockeying has given the mainstream debate about Obama’s successes and failures a false illusion of depth. On one hand you have all the lies and myths of the Republicans representing Obama’s fiercest critique, and on the other hand you have all the defenders of Obama singing his accomplishments and virtues while debunking all the myths constructed by the Right.
What this left/right positioning of the debate has accomplished is to shut out and marginalize legitimate, reality-based, deeply meaningful and truly damning critiques of the Obama presidency and his administration.
Moderates, independents, and casual progressives not tuned in to alternative media are left to wonder, “If Republicans hate him so much, and the baseless attacks from Republicans is all they have to complain about, he must be doing something right… right?”
The following 5 articles and two videos challenges this falsely constructed spectrum of opinion and offers a true (reality-based) critique of Obama. Just imagine if these perspectives were allowed to enter the mainstream debate.
1. Lifting the Veil: Obama and the Failure of Capitalist Democracy (2011) (Documentary)
This film explores the historical role of the Democratic Party as the “graveyard of social movements”, the massive influence of corporate finance in elections, the absurd disparities of wealth in the United States, the continuity and escalation of neocon policies under Obama, the insufficiency of mere voting as a path to reform, and differing conceptions of democracy itself. …just imagine
I often do — doing so is central to seeing American national politics for what they are or could have been/could be.
Well done pull together of five articles and two videos Tim Hjersted.

Excellent rundown, Hjersted!

The Failure of Capitalist Democracy? Capitalist Democracy can’t fail because it can never exist.
Capitalism is a rich-get-richer system that, by design, centralizes both wealth and power. It’s core propaganda is that “a rising tide lifts all boats” but the reality is that only a very few can afford a boat. The rest end up drowning.
Democracy is a system whose soul is equally-shared power. When an economic system creates a class of wealthy elite, as capitalism always will, democracy’s soul withers and dies.
Capitalist Democracy? Ain’t no such thing.
Socialism is how most families operates, “from each according to their ability, to each according to their need.” It also works well in groups of like minded folks, such as religious groups.
I don’t know of any nation-state that has survived for long without “private property,” it’s the cornerstone of capitalism. Private ownership is the only real hedge against unbridled government power.
IMHO, both Germany and France are decent examples of “welfare capitalism.”
The future is about a desperate fight for fresh water, food and electricity/energy. If you think “government” will benevolently or intelligently allocate those resources, take a look at the People’s Republic of China.
Tim, I’m in Wisconsin. I’ll be voting for Stein, because I think Obama’s far enough ahead in the polls. If I thought my vote “counted,” the deciding issue would be voter suppression. However bad we all agree Obama and the Dems have been, they will fight GOP voter suppression. Certainly, that’s been my experience here in Wisconsin where Scott Walker tried and failed to impose Voter ID.
Kevin Gosztola wrote this about 3rd party votes from around the political spectrum.
“…Their votes help to create the space for any movement to reform the electoral process by instituting instant run-off voting, ranked-choice voting, abolishing the Electoral College, getting money out of politics, abandoning the Commission on Presidential Debates, reforming draconian ballot access laws or imposing term limits on members of Congress, etc. After all, it is tough to imagine any movement for meaningful electoral reform having any power if that power is not a factor in elections somehow…..”

IMHO, we need folks from around the political spectrum to vote 3rd party, to break up the uniparty.
Exactly, welshTerrier2.
Under capitalism, democracy is impossible by definition. Capitalism mandates that the major institutions of society be under the control of a corporate oligarchy. Until the major institutions of society are under the popular control of participants and communities, talking about democracy is pointless.
“When I said I would never vote for Bush because his foreign policy deliberately kills innocent people, they called me a good Democrat. When I said I would never vote for Obama for the same reason, they called me an evil Republican”. –mojada
So concise, so accurate, I love it!
Yes, the Democrats will (somewhat) fight GOP voter suppression, simply because it is in the self-interest of Democrats so to do. And the GOP will fight Democratic voter suppression for the same reason.
I began this cycle intending to vote for Dr. Jill Stein because I thought my vote would not matter anyway–and it will not.
However, as I have given it more analysis, I have come to believe that voting Democratic as the Democrats continue to move rightward is not the lesser of two evils at all.
It is the greatest of all possible voting evils, short of, of course, voting for a Klan member or something along those lines. A Republican President could not have promoted Republican ideas more successfully and to almost 100% of the nation, as quickly as a Republican President pretending to be a Democrat.
Obama will win, I know, but I wish he and the Trojan horse he rode in in would get back to Chicago so he and Michelle could start making their post-Presidency fortune.
Brilliant, mojada.
Tim, the reception that your diary got on Daily Kos illustrates how far that site has fallen. Once upon a time, it was part of the insurgency against the Democratic Party’s hidebound and incompetent leadership. Now it’s become a communications and fund-raising arm of the national party.
The cornerstone of capitalism is greed, power and arrogance.
For those keeping score, there are now 37 comments on Tim’s diary at Orange-For-Obama…and all 37 are negative, most of which are hateful and vitriolic, to boot.
Groupthink botting on, in perfect goose-step. It makes me proud to be an American…Hail, the Obama! Hail, Victory!
