One of my absolutely favorite films from my childhood is “The Wizard of Oz”. Now, for those who have read the original L. Frank Baum books and find the 1939 musical film cheesy, not true to the story and so on, I agree but it’s still a really entertaining movie in that Golden Age mold of ‘all singing! All dancing!’
It’s also, a particularly apt film for this particular moment in time, which is the changeover of Administrations from sort of collective Wicked Witch of the West to perhaps the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy. Two scenes in this movie stand out for me (and no, one of them is NOT the Wicked Witch calling on the flying monkeys): Right after Dorothy emerges from her house(which has just fallen on another wicked witch, whose legs will soon shrivel up, striped stockings and all, leaving the famed ruby slippers for Dorothy).
As Dorothy enters the sunlight (and the film changes to the brand new Technicolor Process), she is soon enveloped by the Munchkins, who welcome her with wonder, glee and some pretty clever songs. It is obvious that they have been hiding, waiting for someone.
Anyone who watched the news videos this week of Hillary Clinton’s entrance into the Department of State would have been struck by the outpouring of the staffers there. She was surrounded by people; people taking photographs with their phones and cameras; people who obviously knew her from somewhere before; people who were just trying to pump her hand, to touch her, people who were just so damned glad that SHE was there. The only thing I did not see was someone throw themselves on the ground to kiss the hem of her pantsuit. Dorothy had landed; the wicked witch was dead, and the Munchkins had emerged to celebrate and throw off their fear.
There has been a lot made of Russell Tice, he of the two-night Keith Olbermann interview about NSA spying and electronic sweeps. Mr. Tice has certainly had his scuffles with people trying to control the information he wanted to give out. As a whistle blower, he’s been put in the position of being fired, his house being raided by the FBI and living under general threat. I am sure that there are many who feel he is a courageous man for coming out; even with Bush and Cheney physically gone, they have left many in positions to hurt Russell Tice.
And yet, I also read today(and don’t ask me where; I think it was in an email that someone passed along that someone else had passed along because I can’t find any news link on it) that the reception that Arne Duncan received on his first day at the Department of Education was much the same as Hillary Clinton’s. A little less effusive, perhaps – after all, he did not arrive with seeming rock star status complete with news cameras and an expected visit from the new president and vice president with announcements.
But staffers at DOE were there to greet him in the cafeteria, genuinely happy to see him, to see someone who so obviously appreciated them – who was glad to see the infrastructure of the department was still there. People had stayed to ‘hold the fort’ for the past 8 years. Just like at State – even with what had been thrown at them by Rice (and I won’t go into it here – suffice it say that the place has been demoralized beyond belief), they came out not only to celebrate a new beginning, but to also let Clinton, Obama and Biden know, “We’re still here — the people who work for the American People stayed.”
There’s all kinds of courage, which of course brings me to my other favorite scene, where Bert Lahr, as the Cowardly Lion, takes his stand on the subject most important to him:
Courage. What makes a King out of a slave? Courage.
What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage.
What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk?
What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage.
What makes the Sphinx the 7th Wonder? Courage.
What makes the dawn come up like THUNDER?! Courage.
What makes the Hottentot so hot?
What puts the "ape" in ape-ricot?
Whatta they got that I ain’t got?
There has been a lot of talk and information out about Bush and Cheney ‘burrowing in’ political appointees during the last year, how the federal agencies basically have been eviscerated and ruined under their collective negligence. I think what we are going to find, after seeing those videos and reading about Arne Duncan at Education is that for all of the efforts to twist the federal bureaucracy into a hollow, incompetent creature, in many of the agencies, the core of the place is still there – people with collective memory who can be counted on to be the foundation to build upon. Yes, perhaps there will be some cleaning up. Yes, it’s obvious from some information that valuable records have perhaps been lost or destroyed. Yes, perhaps some people will find that having been ‘burrowed in’ to lower paying positions will not be to their liking and they will leave…or their own incompetence will give them away.
But sometimes, hanging on by your toenails no matter what is courage too. We’re still here.

Yes! And we all owe a debt of gratitude to all the nameless and faceless bureaucrats who hung on in spite of everything, trying to do their jobs the best way they could, resisting as much as possible the destruction of their agencies and all their previous hard work, and I am sure, squirreling away documents and ideas and other things that will help. They know who the burrowers are, and they can also be helpful in making it ‘possible’ for them to all quit.
Hooray!
I would suggest that the new heads of these departments seek out and re-employ those who have resigned publicly and repudiated the Bush tactics and policies as well. They also have high standards and we need them too.
I have this image of a huge line in front of the offices of the new Cabinet members with registration desks in front with people asking, “Name, rank, department, and oh, by the way, what is YOUR secret?” I have the feeling that there is going to be a whole lot of information that is going to get quietly passed along to the appropriate people.
and Digg’s open, folks.
what a blessing these people are. i’m feeling better and better – i was in desperate fear that the previous would not leave.
I know there were plenty of people who were hounded out or left in disgust – but we have to celebrate the sheer determination of the people who made the decision to stay and hopefully ‘outlast the b**tards’. I know there are a lot of people out there who view government employees with disdain – and yet, whatever we have left of competence in the federal agencies is due to the people who stayed behind to fight.
You Can Call Me Arne was at TPM, Toby. It’s a sweet read.
And, indeed, cheers and thanks to all those folks who’ve stuck it out all these long, horrible years.
Thank you so much, Laura!!!! I was going nuts trying to recall where I’d seen it. And yes, such a really good documentation of the greeting.
Great post, Toby!
Laura beat me to it on the reader comment from Josh’s place……rats! because it was one of the very infrequent times my feeble memory actually worked. *g*
Please be right! about the quiet (and preferably not so quiet) passing of information.
Waccamaw – If you were someone who had proudly served the federal government and the American People as a career person (no matter what the agency)..and your face had been ground into the dirt by incompetant political hacks who took their revenge out on you to try to get you to leave, endangering your livelihood and ;your ability to pay your kids’ dental bills..and you watched some of your good friends and associates go through the same thing and perhaps some of them left…and you also saw how ineffective your agency had become because of it…and you had just hung on and hung on…and then there was an election, and new people who appreciated you came in…wouldn’t YOU want to make sure the new people knew who had been the villains? who had destroyed or ordered destroyed records and evidence? Who had turned your agency into an incompetant and ineffective group? Who were hiring people not on expertise or background, but on having a degree from a limited subset of religious and politically conservative places so that all the empty places in the agency were taken up with more people such as themselves? Wouldn’t YOU make sure that you got that information to the people who can now do something effective with it? I’m sure you would. I know I would. If it meant meeting someone in the parking garage in the middle of the night, I’d do it; if it meant passing a note to someone in the ladies room, I’d do it. Now they feel they are not alone; now they know that someone’s walked into the room, turned on the lights and all the rats are scurrying for the corners.
We hear through the grapevine that there are many people waiting to speak, now that it’s safe. Been a long cold winter.
It’s very possible that people are looking for some sort of official or even quasi official process set up so that they can submit their information in a confidential way, but I’m fairly confident that this will happen.
Excellent post, Toby. I saw the Clinton clip earlier today and was amazed at the reception. Wonder if Kindasleazy has seen it.
Good evening Toby.
Evening, Betsy –
I’m sure she has – and I also have the feeling that given her response to Obama’s being elected, she will not see Clinton’s reception at State as having any reflection on her management and leadership there.
nice post.
(bowing) Thank you..thank you. Seeing that video clip of people just swarming around Hillary Clinton – it looked like ‘old home week’ – and yet, she never served there. But it was obviously this huge outpouring of emotion and affection and hope.
Have you ever seen the David Lynch movie, “Wild At Heart?” Chock full of Wizard of Oz references, violence, scatology, etc., much like the Bush tenure in those respects.
Toby,
I did a diary in early December based on a series of WaPo0 articles on what was confronting the new admin in most of the Federal Agencies. I have an idea that the responses at State and Education were not at all unique.
It’s called ‘public service’ for a reason. Long time since we’ve heard that phrase.
Nope – I’ll have to put that on my Netflix list :)
Heh..to borrow a joke I saw in a posting here this morning…the morning devotional in the Bush Admin seemed to have been for all of his appointees to announce, “Let us prey.”
ooo, thank you so much for linking that – we should get that reposted as a touchstone for referral.
Like most Lynch films, not for the faint of heart, or those who require a linear storyline. I saw it when it was first released (on a first date, no less). Quite a few people walked out. It’s worth watching if you’ve enjoyed Lynch’s other work but be forewarned, it is a tad intense at times.
Anyone want to be where the first really disgusting revelations emerge? I was going to go for Justice, but with Holder being held up, I think it will come from someplace else now.
Well, with a cast that includes Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern, it should be interesting…
That Duncan sounds like a good pick …Better than some might offer.
;>)
OMG….that’s great
Dafoe delivers an excellent performance as an unspeakably vile character. It was one of his key scenes that inspired the most walkouts.
well, unspeakably vile is one of his best gigs.
Can you say “Tice”? *g* It is begun.
OT, I’m afraid:
Security experts skeptical on Gitmo detainee report
It’s a good analogy. I could maybe picture Rove as the wizard and Scooter as Toto.
Somewhere after the election (Oh, happy day!) but well before the Inauguration, I saw a report somewhere or other that Seymour Hersh told an interviewer that he had been getting calls and various messages from people in DC who were saying, “Call me on the afternoon of January 20. I have things to say.”
I’m thinking that there is a lot of information out there to keep him and many other investigative reporters busy for some time.
Barbara!!! Tice is ‘horse of a different color’ (to keep the WOZ thing going); if I am not mistaken, he was hounded out of his job when he started to ask questions; his house was searched by the FBI (and I think several computers were confiscated), and it’s only now that Obama’s not only elected but also sworn IN that he’s been willing to come out and actually talk. This is a very careful guy – he’s already seen what a vindictive bunch are still out there. But I think you are right; he’s just the first one.
Here’s the deal. You are or are not a person with terroristic tendencies. You are grabbed, cuffed, smacked, put in a cage, insulted, beaten, tortured. Now. Let me ask you. After several years of that, if one were not a violent, hateful person from the get-go, I imagine one might become such in those conditions. Returned to terrorist activities? Maybe. Turned to terrorist activities in rage and indignation? Mmmm. Could be.
“Pay no attention behind that curtain!”
;>)
Well, considering this little bit of news, in all probability, they are making it up out of ‘whole cloth’:
“President Obama’s plans to expeditiously determine the fates of about 245 terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and quickly close the military prison there were set back last week when incoming legal and national security officials — barred until the inauguration from examining classified material on the detainees — discovered that there were no comprehensive case files on many of them.”

gee, who knew that Dick had a direct connection to George’s brain?
Yup, you done fetched Rover.
Come again? Who are these rebels?
;>)
He was indeed fired for failure to cover butts. The whole time he was talking to Olbermann, I found myself being afraid for him. I’m reasonably certain the long arm of BushCo will reach out and touch someone for a fair amount of time. These are very scary people, Bush neocons. Oh, wait. You know that! I learned much of that here!
Last one, I promise.
;>)
I cringe imagining Dick and George’s hardware interface.
WONDERFUL. And I think he is “a very bad man.”
(I also picture Stephen Hadley as a flying monkey.)
Did you see the 10th one in this series…chilling
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..index.html
An improvement over his (ab)normal appearance, actually.
New Frank Rich.
nice post Toby and thanks!
The Wizard of Oz movie has always been special to me, my mothers best friend’s mother did wardrobe for the film. As a child she went to school on the movie lot. When both families settled down to watch the the Oz on TV….. she always had interesting tidbits to fill in about the film.
Yesssss!!! Spot on, Mr. R.
Are we sure that’s not just a buildup of ear wax?
Damm, ya mean there’s a list out of DeeCee I’m not on? Damn. Oh, wait…
That’s the Dick I know.
;>)
If you right click right over Bushes right ear and zoom in you can see that Bush is wearing an ear weanie (TeeVee technical term) and my boyfriend who works in TV says it looks like a receiver. We could not find one in any the pictures of Obama so rule out secret service communication device.
Wow. we’ve got our own ‘6 degrees of kevin bacon’ here.
mmmm, No. (and this has been another episode of ’short answers to complex questions’)
Given where his head typically is, probably Brazilian ear wax.
Uncheney my heart…
thers up at the mothership
excellent post toby
OH…I saw another picture where bush is sitting there with what looks like a box in his hand and I wondered what that was..may he was looking at a teevee device and getting the audio through the earpiece….
Dang, you are quick!!!
Great article, Toby.
Coincidentally, the new Frank Rich column contains a Wizard of Oz reference. Great minds.:-)
Thanks Suzanne….Folks….time to drag the chairs and the cocktail glasses upstairs to see Thers…..
well, now I have to go read the entire thing….
Was that part of that series?
Too true. MY mother lived next door to the mayor of Munchkin land, when she was little. She was loved going over there, because their home was scaled to them, so perfect for a child. AND the sister of one of my closest friends in college bought the metal works shop that made the Courage Medal, and found its mold. I was given one of only two replicas as a graduation gift when we got our M.A.s…
I wonder if a few more private planes might not go down soon. Perhaps a warning to all who would speak out.
I have a friend who’s mom was a munchkin. He is now a rather short potter in Sonoma.
Exactly.
Cept I keep thinking Rove was working for the guy(s) behind the curtain. Who is smart enough? Cheney? Addington? Think Tankers? Who, I wonder, pulled this off?
Oh no, Loo Hoo, but thank you anyway. That piece is almost three years old, like my sense of humor.
;>)
nope. That was from a giant zoom-able Inaugural photo..hold on..
http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan…..2b4b06233c
Just find Obama speaking at the lecturn, pan left a little bit right behind him and there is Bush, looking at something in his gloved hands which looks like a black box.
Oh, wow. I really love that movie. I saw it the first time when they re-issued it and it ran in our little downtown theatre. Margaret Hamilton scared the bejeesus out of me..gave me nightmares for days. They showed it with a Disney featurette called “Living Desert”.
Rove indeed was the stage manager. The director and producers have not yet revealed themselves to the spotlight.
;>)
Hey, katymine!
Wizard of Oz was always special to me as a kid cuz the 5 of us kids got to sit in front of the tv, put newspapers down under our plates, and eat while watching! Every Sunday evening, during Walt Disney Hour.
Brilliant!!!
If you zoom all the way it shows a table with a carafe of water & glasses for poor puny cheney….. He is clapping with black gloves……. part of the effect is the guys shirt sleave and wrist that is sitting behind cheney…..
thank you toby! We need to acknowledge the unsung heroes who hunkered down and toughed it out in service of our country.
Thanks it was rather startling how happy the folks at State were. Nothing feigned about it. The happiness was genuine.
BTW most of Baum’s books are in Project Gutenberg
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/b#a42
You bet your last buck I would! Probably woulda been one of those who hung on just to get payback. *g*
Hmmm….
Let’s just hope that this administration doesn’t re-enact my favorite scene, you know, the one in which the Wizard can’t get the balloon to return to pick up Dorothy. “I don’t know how the thing works!”, or words to that effect (I’m sure I’ll be corrected with the exact quote.), as the balloon drifts off.
Who’s gonna throw water on Condi and steal her Ferragamo broom?
Can I have that job?
Toby, really cool post and I love the gigapan pic. awesome! as someone else pointed out, what you are seeing is Bush clapping and his hands are positioned over the carafe of water.
And sheesh, Cheney really is the malignant narcissist with his wheelchair, fedora and carafe of water. It’s all about him, eh? Just flaunting his rare visibility on this day of all days. Jerk.
On a darker note:
Q: What’s the beauracrats’ ultimate revenge?
A: Patience.
And here we are.
so was there a munchkin coroner who pronounced the WWOTW “most sincely dead” ???
and which slippers did Hillary get ???
and i LOVES ME SOME TOBY W….yes i do
Hey…NDFG!!! Thank you for coming here. I really appreciate this. And yes – I think we are going to find that there was a genuine ‘underground’ at federal agencies – no ‘plastique’ perhaps, but definitely a Resistence.
Heh..I think that was Obama’s Inaugural Address, frankly.
I actually had tears watching Mrs. Clinton’s reception. How she must have felt after all the crap that has been thrown at her this past year!
I firmly believe that things happen for a reason, that God plans for us, but sometimes we question and doubt.how wonderful that Obama is our President and we have an outstanding Secretary of State!
I feel that our country, our great country is back on tract after a national nightmare. I am talking about 8 years of Bush/Cheney.
When we were going through the primary season, I really had in my mind the thought of ‘who is the best tool for this job?’ Hillary was my senator, so I knew her better and felt we needed someone really tough to deal with the Repubs. But Obama has really impressed me with his absolute cleverness – this is a guy who obviously was ready before Day 1 and knew what he had to do ON Day 1. and he did it. Amazing!! Sec’y Clinton will do a great job at State. She is the tool they need – and she’s tough enough to deal with the parasites that have burrowed in as well.
Let’s just hope Obama and others in his administration are as brave as “Dorothy”. Let’s hope they are willing to pull back that curtain and really examine who and what is behind that curtain.
