I know there’s been a lot out there about people, groups, and restaurants in Madison, Wisconsin supporting the people demonstrating against the legislation being put forward by Gov. Scott Walker to take away public workers’ collective bargaining rights. And it’s all very heartwarming in a global sense.
But Aunt Toby wants you to clean off the specs and read this list on the blackboard from Ian’s Pizza on State, Ian’s Pizza on State Order Board which has been fielding and fulfilling orders for pizza for the demonstrators. And I want you to think about what this list actually means, in more than a ‘what the heck; I’ll put a charge of $20 on my credit card.”
There are countries on that list where people are starving, suffering from want, suffering from earthquakes and other disasters, people who we have frankly failed. And they believed enough in what is happening in a town they have never seen, a half a world away, to send food to American workers demonstrating for their rights.
There are countries on that list where people have every right to hate the United States (and probably do) because of what we have done and continue to do, where our military forces have done unspeakable things their families and children. And people in those countries sent food to American workers demonstrating for their rights against corporatism.
There are countries on that list which we fear and demonize and vilify on a regular basis in our media. And people in those countries sent food to our people because they believed in us.
* Sniff * Makes you feel damned humble, doesn’t it? If they can do that, why can’t we get off our butts and fight for what is right and good?

Very humbling. Thanks Toby
Thanks, Toby!
They really do humble me. In truth, they are showing solidarity.
When the dust has settled and the workers have won their battle with Walker, I hope everyone traveling to Madison, WI will give Ian’s their pizza business. They’ve been honest and above board in a situation where it would be easy to take advantage of people, and they’ve worked cooperatively with other businesses. Yay for Ian’s!
It is like they know the fight is about the “soul” of America, i.e., whether we have one or not.
Other countries stepping in is so heartwarming. Perfect example of we are one world.
Brilliant, Toby ~ this really needs to be said and you have said it for all of us.
Apart from the wonders of the persistence of “ethical capitalism” in a globalized economy … which is *blowing* my mind …
The deeper heartfelt meaning to me is that there are people worldwide who somehow understand what we are up against here in the US with our broken government and our flawed corporate-media-driven political philosophies. They understand that not all of us are behind the bombing, the torture, the manipulative foreign policies, the economic opportunism, or even the false divisions based on religion and culture.
Our *friends* across the globe don’t need as many words to say it, either, and I bow in awe of that! They say it with pizza.
The people -everywhere- are united.
I am suddenly very hopeful.
I wish we knew of a a way to send a few bucks to those now protesting in other countries…one on one, not through some organization that skims off the top.
Yes. That is something else that we need to change, huh.
Very good sign, that by getting out on the streets and fighting against oligarchical mogul horde, the U.S. public has offset a great deal of the demonization used against it by the oligarchs like Gaddafi.
Thanks, Aunt Toby. Very inspiring and insightful story.
Our friend Laura Doty says that Doctors Without Borders is still in Libya as of yesterday and of course, Red Crescent.
Doctors Without Borders is still operating in Libya. The Red Crescent is also a great organization.
Thanks Toby.
And as of 5:38 p.m. EST, these countries: Kenya, Bulgaria and Bosnia. It’s the United Nations of Pizza, folks.
As Josie Wales said, “Governments don’t live together, people live together.”
I second those sentiments, Aunt Toby, and YAY! Ian’s Pizza. There’s still Feb. 26 soon to come (hint, hint).
I love it!
Pizza for the people!
“Fooled ‘em again, Josie!”
Really an astounding bit of information Toby, for all the reasons stated by and and comments. Thanks.

Oh, rcc’d . . . of course.
It is great pizza and I really love that is not corporate but a local business.
Fred Risser’s Coffee
My State Senator, Fred Risser, who represents downtown is one of the 14 Exiles. We’re both regulars at EVP coffee a mile east of the Capitol.
Rather than let his morning brew go to waste, starting this AM there’ll be a regular delivery of “Fred’s pot.” They brew the strongest in the whole midwest.
Woo Hoo, EVP coffee!
aaahh… look at those cute Mid-westerners discussing “strong” coffee. That’s just precious.
;)
theer is total bewilderment and disbelief in australia that such anti labour measures can even be dreamt of in this day and age in a ‘western democracy’
