Oh, my friends in Pennsylvania (I know you are my friends because “you’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania’, right?), what Tom Corbett and the Repubs in the legislature have done to you on fracking. Again.
Physicians and others who work with citizen health issues may request specific information [from the drilling companies in terms of what chemicals they use], but the company doesn’t have to provide that information if it claims it is a trade secret or proprietary information, nor does it have to reveal how the chemicals and gases used in fracking interact with natural compounds.
If a company does release information about what is used, health care professionals are bound by a non-disclosure agreement that not only forbids them from warning the community of water and air pollution that may be caused by fracking, but which also forbids them from telling their own patients what the physician believes may have led to their health problems.
A strict interpretation of the law would also forbid general practitioners and family practice physicians who sign the non-disclosure agreement and learn the contents of the “trade secrets” from notifying a specialist about the chemicals or compounds, thus delaying medical treatment.
The clauses are buried on pages 98 and 99 of the 174-page bill, which was initiated and passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly and signed into law in February by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett. New PA Law Gags Doctors
In other words, if you live in an area where fracking is taking place, and you start having symptoms which you think might have something to do with your being exposed to chemicals which might have been used in fracking, your doctor or any other doctors involved in your treatment can ask for information on chemicals that companies drilling in your area use in fracking. But they don’t have to tell anyone and in order to get that information, your doctor will have to sign a legally binding NDA which will prevent him from passing on that info. I can see the scene in the hospital or doctor’s office now….
“Well, Mrs. Murphy, I think I know what your problem is and what might be causing it.”
“Oh, doctor – what can it be?”
“Well, Mrs. Murphy, I can’t tell you that myself. Why don’t you try guessing, like in the fairy tale, ‘Rumplestilskin’?
“Oh, this is a game? Let’s see…. Is it benzene or toluene or xylene, or ethylbenzene?”
“Sorry, Mrs. Murphy – only one chemical guess at a time and you only have two guesses left…”
“Doctor, how can I be treated if no one can know what caused this?”
“Well, Mrs. Murphy, we’ll just keep throwing something at it until something sticks.”
Just a reminder for anyone who cares, but in 2005, “the Bush/Cheney Energy Bill exempted natural gas drilling from the Safe Drinking Water Act. It exempts companies from disclosing the chemicals used during hydraulic fracturing. Essentially, the provision took the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) off the job. It is now commonly referred to as the Halliburton Loophole.” Congressional Report on Fracking.
That’s for anyone feeling nostalgic about the ‘good old days’ of 2000-2008.

What will Liz say to the victims? Vote for me!
Halliburton syndrome: Stockholm syndrome on a national scale…
We’ve become enslaved by our own dependence on high energy lifestyles. The costs far exceed the price at the pump. Frack-tured lives are the inevitable result of capitulation to corporate hegemony.
Dollars have always had the vote. Sense, not so much. Pretty much, peak civilization is in the rear-view mirror. Is the road to ruin lined with familiar faces? Nope, just one big, long mirror.
We aren’t allowed to know which foods have GMO’s. Workers in the BP oil spill in the Gulf are held hostage so they can’t tell the world what happened. Pennsylvanians aren’t allowed to know about poisonous chemicals in their drinking water.
God bless America, the land where the free flow of information reigns supreme.
U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
We’ve got the Halliburton Syndrome, the Monsanto Syndrome, the Dow Chemical Syndrome, and Obama caught the BP Syndrome last spring and summer. Of course there’s also the Iran is Developing Nukes Syndrome and …..
Really ET this country is a fracking mess and getting worse by the day.. My only hope is those behind this get sick from the same chemicals… I know I know but fuck these greedy bastards deserve what they are doing to the rest of us…
Secrecy, non-disclosure and lies in marketing are all standard procedure in the US and have been throughout our history. Just check out the history of lead, radium poisoning, nuclear fallout and other irradiation exposures, asbestos, tobacco, aromatics, and on and on. The lives of millions of citizens have been sacrificed on the alter of what is best for business.
They think they can always escape to someplace else that they haven’t yet raped.
The problem is that pollution — even ground and water pollution — tends not to stay put.

I live in PA. Corbet has been a grade A disaster. You can see why he hardly ever sticks his head out in public. The IDIOT is a complete MORON. He didn’t want to tax the NG companies and held out as long as he could. He did this for a $5000 campaign contribution. He bankrupted the Chester school district because one of his contributors runs the charter schools in the district. He passed that right wing sonogram law and said all women had to do was close their eyes. Something his wife must do the couple of times a year she willing to have sex with this DUFUS. He cut the crap out of the higher ed budget and ,of course, gave out tax cuts like halloween candy. Hopefully, this guy will be a one termer.
It’s true what they say about PA. It’s NY in the eastern part of the state. CA in the western part of the state and Alabama in the middle. Because of this Dems have real problems getting control of the legislature.
In live in the 7th district. We are represented by Pat Meehan. Another loser! The legislature just redrew his district so he could be relected. If they had kept the old boundaries, I doubt he would have been relected. I’m sorry we lost Joe Sestak, but he decided to run against Pat Toomey for the Senate. Another right wing lunatic that the voters of PA decided to put in office.
Really the old adage of “Don’t Fuck With Mother Nature” applies here. she will certainly pay you back for the abuse of her! Re Global Weather Change(warming)!
There are form families of organic compounds. organic compounds are compounds with carbon, inorganic compounds generally do not have carbon (there are some exceptions, not naturally occurring).
The two families of organic compounds are aliphatic and aromatic. Aliphatic have strain chains of carbon. You an I are composed of aliphatic (straight chain) carbon compounds. Aromatic organic compounds have a benzene ring, that is six carbon atoms arranged in a ring.
Some aliphatic carbon compounds are poisonous and some carcinogenic. Acetone, use in nail polish and nail polish remover, is one such aliphatic compound, a second is ethylene glycol, antifreeze.
All aromatic carbon compounds are carcinogenic and all are poisonous, probably at levels much lower than would be permitted by the EPA. Aromatic carbon compounds include benzene, toluene, naphthalene, xylene and ethyl benzene.
No aromatic carbon compounds are healthy for life as we know it, not us, our animals, fish, nor our plants. It is criminal to use these compounds where they can polluter water supplies.
Another killer law requiring doctors to lie to their patients, this time with potentially fatal results. First the Republicans disparaged Government, then public workers and now health care professionals. Soon they will have us looking at all Americans as a people as low and disreputable as Republicans.
They sure love their regulation when it comes to fu*cking the citizens. One pile of rubbish after the next.
After 8 yrs of Bush fiascos, PA voted for more of it.
Corbett — a disgrace for Western Pennsylvania
Hey, blue–
You ARE holding up the index finger while chanting, aren’t you? We may be number one–but I can’t imagine that it is in any category having to do with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I’m not sure it’s the index finger that bluewombat is holding up….
Since they haven’t revealed the compositon of the fracking liquids, we have no idea if they contain aromatics. Since most inorganic compounds don’t burn, we know hydrocarbons are involved. I’ve seen the movie where a homeowner ignites his water.
There could be acids involved with the fracking liquids. Whatever their using it can’t be good. They hide behind the fig leaf that the composition is proprietary. I suspect that they’re afraid that if the public knew what they were using, it would end fracking. It’s cheaper for them to keep going and to fight the lawsuits. With Corbett in charge in PA, it won’t be too hard to get legislation to limit their liability. Eventually it’s going to get out, but by then it will be too late.
hold the fucker down and make him drink a gallon of fracking liquid.
And Haley Barbour, on MTP (I think) this morning was castigating the Obama administration for attempting to place restrictions on fracking. What do you think is going to happen in the next Republican administration?
Ah, give the man a kewpie doll.
Exactly.
Gov Corporate says to just “close your eyes” and don’t worry about it.
“That’s for anyone feeling nostalgic about the ‘good old days’ of 2000-2008.”
Bush was certainly not an environmentalist, but Obama’s record on actions – as opposed to talking – is worse. For documentation see http://newprogs.org/blog/2011/11/08/environment-under-democraticrepublican-uni-party
