How’s that for you? Sound crazy? A president is a commie agent?
The biggest-money successor for the Birch Society — the Club For Growth — is saying pretty much equally mad things about nine Republican congressmen:
– Larry Bucshon (IN-08)
– Rick Crawford (AR-01)
– Renee Ellmers (NC-02)
– Adam Kinzinger (IL-16)
– Frank Lucas (OK-03)
– Steve Palazzo (MS-04)
– Martha Roby (AL-02)
– Aaron Schock (IL-18)
– Mike Simpson (ID-02)
The president ??? That was Dwight Eisenhower. The Birch Society printed multiple editions of a book claiming he was working for the Russians.
That spew on Eisenhower and other rants were the core messaging of the longest prior incarnation of the Club For Growth. Formerly it was able to operate funding projects connected with the John Birch Society. Now it plays fellow traveler with various “tea party” operations. Club For Growth also served as a second club house during the primaries for hammering Establishment Republicans.
I’m not making up the slur on President Eisenhower. Robert Welch campaigned across the country looking for people to believe him.
Welch was the guy who called the meeting that attracted Fred Koch and led to founding the Birch Society. Welch wrote dozens of articles and lectured and signed his book claiming that Ike was a secret commie. Same for Chief Justice Earl Warren, another Republican. Former Governor of California.
Everybody in politics knew Welch was a raving paranoid.
The nine congressmen, today, are presented as secret democrats, Obama supporters, socialists !!
First off, suggesting that Lucas or Shock are lefties should be grounds for a court ordered Mental Status Examination.
But here’s the alternate reality the Club for Growthers are seeing. This is beyond the usual fantasies that present with run of the mill paranoids — quoted directly from a letter to GOP Congressman Aaron Shock:
• When you voted against cutting all of the spending from President Obama’s failed “stimulus” bill, was that because you are a big spender at heart? (RCV #42, 2009)
• When you voted to increase the debt ceiling by $2.1 trillion, was that because you wanted to give President Obama more money to spend? (RCV #690, 2011)
• When you voted for a budget extension that funded ObamaCare, was that because you secretly like ObamaCare and want to implement it? (RCV #579, 2012)
• When you claim you voted for a tax cut in the “fiscal cliff” tax increase deal, do you think that the other 151 Republicans who voted the other way voted for a tax increase? (RCV #659, 2012)
• When you were one of only 41 Republicans to vote against cutting $1.2 million from the budget of the U.S. Botanic Gardens, located in Washington, D.C., did you mistakenly think it was located in Illinois’s 18th Congressional District? (RCV #371, 2012)
The first thing that comes up, Democrats salivate at getting chances to run in three of these House seats with no defending incumbent Republicans. If they’re going to be attacked like this, then anything can happen.
Consider the details of what Club For Growth identifies as unacceptable political positions. The stimulus bill had broad support, essentially everybody in politics who wanted to avoid a second Great Depression. Debt ceiling fights are self-harm with no practical purpose. Obamacare ends up saving money.
Then obviously the so-called “fiscal cliff” tax deal preserved the Bush tax cuts for those under $450,000-a-year; above that the tax cuts were set to expire anyway.
Who gives a hoot about the budget details for the U.S. Botanic Garden (not “Gardens”) located at 100 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20001 ???
Club For Growth can’t spell Botanic Garden properly.
Among other things, USBG maintains an 85,000-foot greenhouse and they host a zillion local kids every year. Those beautiful plants and flowers you see all over the nation’s capital come from this greenhouse by the tens of thousands. $2.4-million in their budget is hardly worth mentioning as a reason to attack a congressman from Illinois, except that they are 100% socialistic and a 100-year success.
Club For Growth is more of Fred Kock Spawn hereditary paranoia, inflicted on millions by way of false advertising.
Try this on for size.
Clearly the operation is aimed to drive Establishment Republicans out of office.
So far it has worked, perversely. Establishment money has moved to attacking democrats instead of trying to retake seats from the 150 Birchers. Despite that the Establishment GOPers are down to 84 seats, they never seem to wake up.
Now the Birchers are being boiling E-GOPers nine at a time.
The Eisenhower middle-of-the-roaders and the Rockefeller moderates are driven to be democrats. While Karl Rove says that he is swapping back to backing E-GOPers for 2014 after backing Birchers 100% in 2012 along with his preferred E-GOPers and losing all but one of his races.
At what point do the E-GOPers call crazy on these people? Barry Goldwater did it all the time. He weeded out the loons every year in Arizona. And he had “White Horse Prophesy” Mormons to deal with. He had separatists who refused taxes and begged him to give them their own county.
Club For Growth is as crazy in 2013 as anything Goldwater had to run out the barn.
