With many ballots still uncounted, Democratic candidate Mark Begich is now in the lead 125,019 to 125,016 — 3 votes separate the two candidates.
The elections division still has over 10,000 ballots left to count today and thousands more through next week, but the latest numbers show Mark Begich leading Sen. Ted Stevens 125,019 to 125,016.
The new numbers, reflecting nearly 43,000 absentee ballots counted today, are from all over the state. Election night, Ted Stevens led the Democratic Begich by about 3,000 votes.
Keep your fingers crossed!
UPDATE:
Alaska Rep. Don Young is maintaining his solid lead over Ethan Berkowitz, who still has not conceded the election. Young now leads by 15,710 votes, a lead that has only narrowed by about 1,000 votes today.

crossing fingers, crossing toes, crossing eyes, can’t cross nose.
Don’t hurt yourself there Elliot.
Wow, amazing. Hope it improves. Alaskans don’t deserve another bite at this apple, especially with Palin in the mix.
man, this is really something
first, palin has to back stevens so she goes back on her word and wants a felon to be in the senate
then stevens is un-elected and palin is looking even more corrupt, backing her guy even though he’s a felon, only to find she trashed her reputation for ab so loot ly nothing
tiz tastey

Well, well, well. AK and MN are looking good for the D’s. Now, if President Obama et al can re-create the turnout on Dec. 2 in SC, a filibuster-proof (unfortunately, we’ll have to depend on JoeLie — ack!) majority in the Senate is in sight. Man, if we just could have defeated McConnell (Repulsive-KY), we wouldn’t have to stroke Joe. Oh well, the good news tonight is the Constitutional Law professor and his crew have found a viable loophole to undo Chimpy’s lawlessness (read: executive orders and/or signing statements). I can’t stop laughing!
Georgia, not South Carolina. I’m giddy right now. Yeah, we already smoked (h/t to Ron Christie) Liddy in South Carolina.
Hope the trend continues.
According to Kos, although his prose is not crystal clear to me, apparently the balance of the counts are in Begich territory.
Before this count today Mark was behind by 3400…that is an indicator. I talked with hi office he only needs one vote to win. No run offs. Palin can elect an interim if the sitting senator resigns until thenf of the term, Probably have a new Dem senator for the US Senate. I was told they are counting 50K today with 40k left
I will call it for Mark.
RIGHT ON, BROTHER!
But if Senator Tubes wins then the Pukes will be forced to throw him out, and if I understand it correctly there is speculation that Governor Sarah could appoint herself Senator Sarah. (Causing Keith Olbermann’s head to explode!)
Is that right?
Nope. After Murkowitz appointed his daughter, the Alaskans took care of that by forcing a special election.
What I don’t understand is why everybody last Wednesday was so determined to call this election for Toobz when it turned out that 1/3rd of the votes hadn’t even been counted yet. I guess, just like everybody called Nebraska and nary an MSM outlet even bothered to acknowledge it when the 2nd Congressional District came in for Obama. The media needs to learn how to find their own arses.
Bayh on Rachel’s show is making the case that no one really wants to accept, but it’s the facts, jack!
Palin on Larry King right now screeching about how she would not appoint herself, she has a contract with Alaska to be the Gov. DO not tune in; the screech will either make you crazy or throw something. She’s offering advice to Obama and Michelle about enjoying their children. Gag her.
As if she has any standing…on anything.
well.. she volunteered today to help President Obama anyway she can. Personally, I think the president could probably use some help scouring mountainous Pakistani tunnel systems for OBL.
Pretty sure he wants her around to yap about his “t’rists” friends…she is scary nuts.
As opposed to using children as campaign props.
’specially the unborn ones…

If we win Alaska, Minnesota, Georgia do we need Joe to get to 60 votes and filibuster proof majority in the Senate?
Pretty sure
Cool:)
Aaaaaaaaargh! Sorry. Ugh. Will we EVER be done with that man?
If we get 60 votes in the Senate without Joe well he will still be in the Senate but he won’t be a problem.
Ya know, JoeLie is somewhat marginalized already from his ‘buddy film’ campaign with McCrazy. With a 58, 59 or 60 Democratic vote Senate, Joe will be forced to the slipstream. He’ll just flow along with the crowd. He’ll have no choice. If he does decide to resist or contrast the majority, he’ll be on the losing side again. I don’t think he’ll want to do that. JMO
You’re assuming he would actually vote in tandem with Dems. But yes, technically correct. I don’t think the “filibuster-proof” Senate is all that big a deal, we could peel off a few Rs if we needed to (IMO). After all, how will Rs enforce discipline with no power base?
Sorry I should have been more clear 60 votes without Joe.
Georgia seems unlikely. And I still think that a filibuster proof majority is a fantasy. There are probably 10-15 Democratic Senators who on any given vote might side with the Republicans to defeat cloture. I think Obama is nuts to pull this let bygones be bygones shtik. As the political philosopher Michael Corleone once said, “It’s just business.” If Obama could cut his ties with Jeremiah Wright, I see no reason why he can’t bid hasta la vista to Joe.
I think part of the problem is that too many people (other Dem senators) personally like the little man. Everybody hates Toobz, but HoJo seems to sustain a loyal following.
agreed
Take a look at Sen. Bayh’s comments on Rachel’s show this evening. Politics is 9/10s perception. President Obama cannot afford to be perceived as anything less than the persona he projected in the campaign. Most of that persona is really who Obama is. Not all, but most. He’s a very adept politician, not to mention, extremely intelligent. He won’t need Joe to get most of everything he wants through the Senate, but it always looks better to take the high road. Plus, there are some Senate R’s who are going to vote with the majority on some, maybe even many, occasions. That’s basically what Bayh was saying tonight.
Mark Begich staff estimates he is up by 600 with the rest of the ballots from predominatelt Blue sections. As off 10 minutes ago.
What is going on with Al “The Truth” Franken’s campaign?
Yes, except Bayh is wishy-washiness personified and I’m not sure he is the best spokesman for Obama’s persona. Obama said he would bring change to Washington. Is this really the change he or the voting public had in mind, to keep the whiniest, most sanctimonious backstabber in the Senate in a powerful chairmanship?
I’m not fond of Joementum either, Hugh. And that’s the nicest way I can put it. In fact, he’s all that you wrote and more (or less, depending on one’s perspective). The HSGA chairmanship of Joe’s is fluid right now, probably more so by 1/20/09.
What about the evidence of monkey business in the Alaska senate race?
The polls all showed Begich with a comfortable lead going into election day. Isn’t it a bit peculiar that the race turned out to even be close?
When are the dems going to start talking about election security?
Numbers just don’t add up there in AK.

Latest number of votes cast in Presidential race is 281,986 with I don’t know how many more ballots to count. Keep in mind that Alaska mailed ballots count if they are postmarked by election day and are received by, I think, 10 days after the election (15 days for overseas and military ballots). I haven’t done the research, but it looks to me like many more Alaskans used vote by mail voting this year.
Begich now up by 814. Berkowitz down 15,085.
WOOHOO Begich!!!
UPDATE
yup, last I looked he had almost a thousand votes more then stevens
good times
