Hilarious
Even better than the “uni.”
I bet the troops in the audience had a ball with that.
funny.. wondering if Colbert will ask any hardball questions or just play along. Odierno “all of the important work we are doing” etc.
“when we started keeping records”
Wonder if Colbert will ask about how many Iraqi people have died since we illegally invaded their country? Will Colbert just be an echo chamber for the military sounds like it.
That was really hilarious! The troops were really getting off to it, too. I was remembering just how much we used to enjoy and appreciate the people who would come out and perform in the USO shows. Of course, the surroundings weren’t quite as comfortable or as high tech as they are nowadays! All the entertainers who do this for our kids over there deserve the highest praise.
Stephen Colbert is there to provide shats and gaggles for the troops, who will shortly be under fire or are relieved that for a short while, they no longer are.
When Mr. Colbert wants to point out the foolishness, rapaciousness and hypocrisy associated with our wars of choice in the Middle East, he does that from home. Unlike the Right’s performance artists, who masquerade as news readers, politicians and commentators, Mr. Colbert is an entertainer. Like Mark Twain, Will Rogers, Lenny Bruce and the Smothers Brothers, he finds politics an inescapable resource for laughter and earned derision.
Mr. Colbert has demonstrated respect for the work and sacrifice of those we tell to fight our wars. Pity their political masters so infrequently do, usually in inverse proportion to the frequency they deride others for “not supporting the troops”.
The normally clever Colbert is boxing himself in to full support mode. Support the troops – ergo, support the mission, ergo, support the killing, ergo, support the fascist enterprise that is bankrupting our Nation for the benefit of the military industrial complex and its big oil adjunct. Colbert’s jokes are much too subtle for the military audience. The jokes must be subtle for fear of insulting the Military (an institution that demands deference and great respect). He can’t get any traction. Satire is totally lost in the raucus venue. Half of the audience wanted to boo Obama. Did you hear that? Really, really f**king awkward.
And Obama as Kommander in Chief, clowning as part of the joke, as the carnage (dead babies and women and children) ordered by the previous administration in a “War of Choice” continues outside the door. (But we’ve rid them of an evil dictator).
Odierno spouting the same age-worn talking points. Things are better now than they were last week. Less killing this week than last week. If he could have said “we’ve turned a corner”, he would have. The truth is that death and mayhem continue at the hands of our occupying army.
Odd, Creepy and Disgusting. Like watching a car accident.
We must all watch to see how strange it gets on Colbert Rapport.
What EarlofHuntingdon said!
“Sure I lost my daughter, my home, my legs, and my first wife when the Americans bombed our neighborhood in 2003. And now I live in a ditch and sell used shoes to buy bread and water. But that was some funny shit, dude!”
