A new article at Truthout, by H.P. Albarelli and Jeffrey Kaye, describes how the CIA’s Artichoke Project* was the contemporaneous and operational side of the MK-ULTRA mind control research program. It was not superceded by MK-ULTRA in the 1950s, as often supposed. Even more, Artichoke-derived methods of using drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation and overload, behavioral modification techniques and other methods of mind control have resurfaced as a primary component of U.S. interrogation practice.
The Truthout article includes some amazing revelations, including the largest description to date of the roles of then-Ford administration officials Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld in working hand-in-glove with the CIA to suppress information on Artichoke from surfacing.
The article also references the November 2006 release of an “Instruction” from the Secretary of the Navy (3900.39D) regarding its “Human Research Protection Program.” While this memo specifically prohibits the use of research upon prisoners, including so-called “unlawful enemy combatants,” waivers of informed consent for research, or suspension of the protections enumerated in the memo can be made by the Secretary of the Navy under conditions of “operational contingency or during times of national emergency.” It is likely the latter rests upon the legislative language within the September 18, 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force, where terrorist acts are said to “continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
The waivers allowed for normal human research testing gains further piquancy when one considers the kinds of research referenced in the Secretary of the Navy’s memo. Section 7(a)(2)(a) describes the Undersecretary of the Navy as the “approval authority” for research done upon prisoners, as well as “Severe or unusual intrusions, either physical or psychological, on human subjects (such as consciousness-altering drugs or mind-control techniques)” [emphasis added].
This referencing of “mind-control techniques” in a document specifically discussing human subjects protections by then Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter, is not an anomaly, but a rare instance in which the actual activities of the government in this area are openly revealed. Some of these activities can be documented via publicly available materials. This article describes how some of the individuals involved in U.S. government mind control and torture activities can be tracked and identified.
APA, CIA: “How might we overload the system or overwhelm the senses…?”
Another instance in which the curtain was pulled back on mind control research by the U.S. government involved the online description by the American Psychological Association (APA) of a CIA and Rand Corporation workshop which it co-sponsored in July 2003 at Rand’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters. The event was attended by approximately 40 research psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, as well as “representatives from the CIA, FBI and Department of Defense with interests in intelligence operations.”
One of these workshops, ostensibly on detection of deception, specifically described how participants should consider “sensory overloads on the maintenance of deceptive behaviors,” including the use of “pharmacological agents. “How might we,” the workshop asked, “overload the system or overwhelm the senses and see how it affects deceptive behaviors?”
The man in charge of “recruiting the operational expertise” for the workshop was Kirk Hubbard, Chief of the Research & Analysis Branch, Operational Assessment Division of the CIA. It appears likely that Hubbard was responsible for the presence at the workshop of SERE psychologists James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen, who were instrumental in the construction of the Bush administration’s “enhanced interrogation” torture program. Hubbard was also reported (by Scott Shane of the New York Times) to have brought James Mitchell to an informal meeting “of professors and law enforcement and intelligence officers… to brainstorm about Muslim extremism” at the home of former APA president Martin Seligman in November 2001.
Sometime in the past six months, the APA eliminated all references to the webpage described above, even going so far as to eliminate linked references to it on other webpages on its site. While the webpage that described the workshops has been scrubbed, mirrored images of the site remain available at well-known web archive sites, as I described in a recent article on this attempt to rewrite or hide APA’s offensive history. In one sense, this attempt to hide its history is not surprising, because the kind of activities discussed in these workshops are exactly like those that involved CIA and military mind control torture programs going back fifty years or more, and evidently still operational today.
The Role of Government Psychologist Susan Brandon
In a recent article, Scott Horton at Harper’s picked up on the unique link between the APA/CIA workshop and the recent revelations about torture at a hitherto unknown black site prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. That link was an individual, Susan Brandon.
Referenced by Horton as working for the Defense Intelligence Agency’s (DIA), Defense Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Center (DCHC), a recent publication identified Brandon more fully as Chief for Research in the DCHC’s Behavioral Science Program. As Horton notes, a recent column by Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic described the DCHC as providing “intelligence operatives and interrogators….. [performing] interrogations for a sub-unit of Task Force 714, an elite counter-terrorism brigade.” Interrogations at the Afghan black site reportedly have included use of sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation, brutality, isolation, relying on the guidelines of the Army Field Manual, including its Appendix M. Many human rights groups have criticized Appendix M as including techniques tantamount to torture and/or cruel, inhumane and degrading and illegal by domestic and international law.
Back in 2003, according to an APA news article, Brandon “jointly conceived” the APA/CIA workshops with Rand Associate Policy Analyst, Scott Gerwehr. (Mr. Gerwehr reportedly died a few years ago.) At the time, psychologist Susan Brandon was the Program Officer for Affect and Biobehavioral Regulation at the National Institute of Mental Health, and worked on the APA/CIA program while also serving as “Senior Scientist” at the APA.
In the early 2000s, Dr. Brandon served as Behavioral and Social Science Principal at the Mitre Corporation, a company highly linked to U.S. Air Defense. Subsequent to her stint as APA’s Senior Scientist, she went on to work in for the Bush administration as Assistant Director of Social, Behavioral, and Educational Sciences for the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. In addition, she became an instrumental member of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBES) Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council’s Committees on Science and Homeland and National Security.
Subsequently, as described in an important article by Stephen Soldz that extends many of the points in this essay, Brandon joined the Defense Department’s Counterintelligence Field Activity group (CIFA), which was later disbanded and reformed as part of the DCHC. Soldz also reminds us that Brandon was “one of the silent observers at the [APA] PENS [Psychological Ethics and National Security] taskforce described by dissident taskforce member Jean Maria Arrigo as exerting pressure on members to adopt a likely pre-approved policy in favor of participation in Guantánamo, CIA, and other interrogations. According to a 2005 article by Geoff Mumford, APA’s Director of Science Policy, Dr. Brandon “helped steer much of the association’s scientific outreach relevant to counter-terrorism after 9/11.”
One example of such outreach would include the June 11, 2002 meeting between Brandon, and other top APA officials with “two senior staff members in the National Security Council’s (NSC’s) Office of Combating Terrorism” (OCT). Since Vice Admiral William McRaven was head of OCT at that time, perhaps Brandon’s acquaintance with the world of Special Operations dates to that time, as McRaven was to become Commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).
JSOC is the other Defense Department component, besides DIA, that has been linked currently with the management of the black site prisons run by the Obama administration, subsequent to President Obama’s apparent closure of the CIA black sites. One reputable source has informed me that there are eight such black site prisons in Afghanistan alone. A recent report by the BBC corroborated earlier reports by the New York Times and the Washington Post. The article by Ambinder further elaborated upon this story.
Why is the Obama Administration Still Involved in Torture?
It is not known if Dr. Brandon has been involved in any of the reported abuses of prisoners coming out of Bagram’s Tor prison, or elsewhere. Yet one would think the Obama administration and the Pentagon has a lot to explain in utilizing as their behavioral chief of research for an agency involved in intelligence operations, including interrogation. But then, why is the Obama administration involved in torture or operating secret prisons at all? President Obama has manifestly broken his promise to the American people to end torture and close all secret prisons. Nor has Congress done their due diligence in investigating these matters. Only when the American people fully understand the extent to which these activities have occupied the government and their various collaborators, like the APA, will society be able to take the necessary steps to end these abuses, and hold those accountable for what amount to crimes against humanity.
As for psychologists, Dr. Soldz rightly notes, “Psychology as a profession is at a crossroads.” The same holds true for other professions involved with this abusive and criminal history, including the activities of anthropologists in the military’s Human Terrain System teams in Afghanistan, researchers in numerous academic departments across the country, and the many reports of doctors and other medical personnel involved in the monitoring of torture activities for the CIA and Defense Department. The use of torture has suborned U.S. civil society as a whole in activities that are dark and evil, and the society as a whole must make a tremendous effort if it is to extirpate such evil from its midst.
*For an early document referring to Artichoke’s history, see CIA, Memorandum for the Record, Subject: Project ARTICHOKE, January 31, 1975. While this MOR downplays Artichoke’s history, it represents the degree to which the CIA was willing to reveal such operations. The Truthout article discusses Operation Dormouse, where then Ford administration officials Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld worked with the CIA to limit revelations about Artichoke and other CIA torture and assassination operations.

WHO DOSED IVINS WITH LSD? HOW FREQUENTLY? DID THE DELUSIONAL EPISODES AND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION BOTH COMMENCE IN THE SAME TIMEFRAME? GOT PLANNING?
LSD leaves a metallic taste in the user’s mouth
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=lsd+%2B+metallic+taste&spell=1
Among the federal documents are excerpts from Ivins’ e-mails to a friend detailing his battles with mental illness. They include parts of an August 2000 email about “one of [his] worst nights in months” and his “paranoid, delusional thoughts.”
“I wish I could control the thoughts in my mind,” the e-mail read, according to a federal affidavit. “It’s hard enough sometimes controlling my behavior. When I’m being eaten alive inside, I always try to put on a good front at work and at home, so I don’t spread the pestilence.”
“Occasionally I get this tingling that goes down both arms,” read an e-mail sent by Ivins on April 3, 2000. “At the same time I get dizzy and get this unidentifiable ‘metallic’ taste in my mouth. (I’m not trying to be funny, [redacted] … It actually scares me a bit.) Other times it’s like I’m not only sitting at my desk doing work, I’m also a few feet away watching me do it. There’s nothing like living in both the first person singular AND the third person singular!”
“Remember when I told you about the ‘metallic’ taste in my mouth that I got periodically? It’s when I get these ‘paranoid’ episodes … Ominously, a lot of the feelings of isolation — and desolation — that I went through before college are returning. I don’t want to relive those years again.”
PROBABLY JUST A MASSIVE COINCIDENCE THAT YET ANOTHER SCIENTIST WORKING WITH ANTHRAX “SUICIDES HIMSELF” AFTER SHOWING CLASSIC SYMPTOMS OF LSD CONSUMPTION IN THE EXACT TIMEFRAME THAT CHENEY AND RUMSFELD REAPPEAR IN POWER.

It was here in the Olson family back yard in 1975 that the world first learned the name of a man who, the story went, had been unwittingly drugged with LSD by the Central Intelligence Agency 22 years earlier and then jumped to his death from a 10th-floor hotel room.
Reporters heard that family patriarch Frank Olson, ostensibly an Army scientist, had committed suicide in 1953. But that explanation left the family – Eric Olson in particular – with many questions about Frank Olson’s life and death.
“I feel satisfied,” said Olson, a Harvard-educated clinical psychologist. “We’re where we want to be – we know what happened.”
What Olson says he knows is this: His father was not a civilian scientist at nearby Fort Detrick, as the family had been told. Instead, he worked for the CIA, running the Special Operations Division at Detrick, which Olson says was the government’s “most secret biological weapons laboratory,” working with materials such as anthrax.
He says the evidence he has gathered over the years shows that Frank Olson didn’t suffer a nervous breakdown, as the family initially was told, and didn’t commit suicide because he had had a negative drug experience, as they learned in the 1970s. Instead, the son says, his father was killed by the CIA because officials there feared he would divulge classified information concerning the United States’ use of biological weapons in Korea.
Now the family has learned that the Ford administration was keeping information from the family, concerned that family members would ask questions about the scientist’s work that the government was unprepared to answer. Among those who advocated keeping quiet were Dick Cheney and Donald H. Rumsfeld, now the vice president and defense secretary, the Olsons learned from memos and other papers received last year from the Gerald R. Ford Library.

Got PATSY?
The CFR is laughing their asses off!
The Anthrax case is big news today, as one of the scientists from Fort Dietrich has “apparently” committed suicide after having been notified that charges would be (falsely) filed against him.
The government has already posted an entire Wikipedia page of Bruce E. Ivins.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too suspicious.
Another bio-scientist dead…nothing to see here…move along.
Surely Dr. Zack and Donald Rumsfeld are relieved.

Nexus: Anthrax, Zack, Gilead, Rumsfeld
On the 9/11 anthrax attacks, the mainstream media went from 24×7 anthrax hysteria to complete amnesia that the attacks ever occurred. The amnesia began as soon as all the evidence for the source of the attacks began to point in the wrong direction. It is, of course, absolutely verboten to mention the name of Philip Zack ever in discussing this glaringly obvious false flag op.
I missed this one: Philip Zack of 911 anthrax fame was employed by Rumsfeld’s biotech firm Gilead:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/frameup/message/18147
Rumsfeld served as Gilead (Research)’s chairman from 1997 until he joined the Bush administration in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.
The forms don’t reveal the exact number of shares Rumsfeld owns, but in the past six months fears of a pandemic and the ensuing scramble for Tamiflu have sent Gilead’s stock from $35 to $47. That’s made the Pentagon chief, already one of the wealthiest members of the Bush cabinet, at least $1 million richer.
Rumsfeld isn’t the only political heavyweight benefiting from demand for Tamiflu, which is manufactured and marketed by Swiss pharma giant Roche. (Gilead receives a royalty from Roche equaling about 10% of sales.) Former Secretary of State George Shultz, who is on Gilead’s board, has sold more than $7 million worth of Gilead since the beginning of 2005.

Conspiracy Flashback to the Ford Administration – and look who is running the ANTHRAX coverup…
http://www.frankolsonproject.org/Articulations/Script-CodeNameArtichoke. html
The conspiracy originated at the top, in the White House, initiated by Donald Rumsfeld and Richard Cheney. It had just been learned that the CIA allegedly drugged its employee Frank Olson with LSD before his supposed suicide.
Yes, such things (the reference in the comment is to Sunstein’s advocacy of “cognitive infiltrators” into discussion groups, blogs, etc.) are included in my characterization of the governments suborning of U.S. civil society. But this doesn’t exist at anything like totalitarian levels, therefore we must seek more sociological explanations.
Many, as I well know, are the opponents of the kinds of activities I write about inside the U.S. government, the press, even the APA and CIA (!). But thus far the need to coalesce as a movement that seizes the public’s attention has not happened.
My explanation is not conspiratorial, but social psychological: we are asking Americans to accept something quite awful about their government. Furthermore, the need to act upon such knowledge is embedded in the awfulness of the crimes involved. Thus far, the population as a whole engages in distraction, denial, and a kind of psychic numbing in relation to this and other related matters (the drone killings, the illegality of the invasion of Iraq, etc.). The U.S. knows it can’t count on this kind of reaction forever, hence the kind of positions put forth by a Cass Sunstein, or the psyops tactics directed against the domestic population. In the end, governmental attempts at suppression will not succeed. But when and how substantial changes will occur, I cannot predict.
I can’t tell you how proud I am to be an American.
I just can’t, it would be a lie.
Jeff, outstanding research and info. Really important stuff. And my guess is…this will be coming to the forefront of “issues” we need to deal with sometime in the near future. (I sense right now so many are on overload re: all the other corruptions/obfuscations/headlines to deal with…but this issue will surface again.)
Thanks.
I don’t think Obama is in charge. He’s a puppet. Maybe he didn’t realize until after his inauguration what role he was pushed forward to play, by those who selected, financed and groomed him for his candidacy. Although the cognitive dissonance between his rhetoric and his Senate votes would seem to imply that he’s not bothered by saying one thing and doing another, so maybe he is in charge.
I suspect that Peter Dale Scott is correct in suggesting that COG is still in effect, as outlined in this article. Reading the article reveals the possibility that Cheney and Rumsfeld may still be running the show. And Obama doesn’t mind fronting for them.
That was an amazing article.
Having extensive experience with lsd, I can tell you that “LSD leaves a metallic taste in the user’s mouth” is not accurate; at least it wasn’t for me and others.
“My explanation is not conspiratorial, but social psychological: we are asking Americans to accept something quite awful about their government. In a past diary I postulated of the need for denial because to admit to the ‘reality’ would be to induce a guilt that would be simply too hard to bear for most. Such would be especially true given the concept that the government is representative of the people.
I think we can see the dynamic occurring in the jewish community in the U.S. if this person’s perspective is to be accepted as being factually based.
It’s not only that the guilt would be too hard to bear. It’s that acknowledging the horror would demand action — but what action? To be serious, it would really demand one’s whole life at this point.
Ann Wright, to her immense credit, has given up any kind of life except working courageously and constantly for peace. Many of us, running through the mental tally of our various obligations, are grateful to squeeze out time to bug our members of Congress.
OK, here’s something to do: sign the petition at http://www.thewarismakingyoupoor.com as a citizen co-sponsor of Rep. Alan Grayson’s The War is Making You Poor Act.
It’ll relieve individual federal income taxes on the first $35,000 of everyone’s income, $70,000 for couples, while paying down the national debt. Take THAT, Pete Peterson and the Catfood Commission!
Grayson is up to 20,243 signatures. Make it 20,244 and sleep slightly better. Oops! Make it 20,251.
He’s up 7 just while I typed this.
And, as Grayson says: Courage.
I’ve been struggling to understand the psychic numbness toward the behavior of our government in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and in the treatment of detainees, that has become apparent to me over the past year in some progressives I know.
I attended a meeting of the social justice committee at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in a nearby town. About thirty self-described liberals were asked to make a list of the three most important moral issues facing our country today. Out of thirty people, only one other person beside myself included our ongoing wars in the Middle East and our treatment of civilians and detainees. Twenty-eight progressive adults listed worthwhile moral issues: economic justice, same-sex marriage, healthcare, immigration, and others, but they did not include what is arguably the issue which should evoke the most moral outrage: our illegal wars and torture.
I believe since Obama was elected, many liberals have succumbed to the psychic numbness you refer to. How else to explain the death of the anti-war movement? Nothing has really changed with Obama, yet there are progressives who are in total denial. It’s breathtaking, really.
been there done that; do a search on my handle and you’ll see some of my ‘action’.
“It’s breathtaking, really.” ; I think you can trace that directly to Obama’s speeches/pronouncements. He told everyone what his intentions were about Afghanistan before he got elected.
I love your comment. I made a coup stick for Cheney. It is hanging on my wall.
If you think you can hit him with it, I will give it to you.
Not the whole population. I think you will find there are people in the TEA Party who are quite outraged about it.
Whoever was blocking me from posting by cutting my electrical power last week, something I assume would involve the kind of political power you are talking about since it seems to have a pattern of very similar interests to Cheney, cut my power when I was trying to mention the Rapture. I also have been blocked from posting at AlterNet. I don’t know who is doing it.
I don’t know if you all heard about that Rapture thing, but when I saw that the Cheney forces of darkness wanted to kill us all because of their cocaine induced biblical delusions, I figured we better come up with a good response. Some people with a lot of power really do think it is the ‘end times’ and their belief is becoming a self fulfilling prophesy.
I think we should charge them as terrorists and be done with it, but we can’t. Our president is on their side. That of course is treason and he should be immediately impeached. But he is not, Pelosi isn’t going to put that on the table now any more than she did for Bush. Duh. So what do we do?
We make a new party that is not corrupted by this corruption. Personally, I think we are blessed to have TWO new parties. Next step, elect new representatives who are willing to fight for our rights and priorities. Dump all the corrupt incumbents. That means knowing which incumbents are corrupt, and how, is really important. That kind of analysis is supposed to be done by the press.
The CIA controls the press. I bet they don’t do it with money, I bet they do it with sex and drugs, illegal drugs.
Illegal sex too, blackmail is very effective.
Another thing mentioned in the article was the use of black psychotherapy. I’d never heard of that before but I do think my family and I are the victims of it. I believe my husband was driven nuts in an effort to get to me.
I also seriously wonder if he was poisoned with DU dust while doing field work on Navy shooting ranges out in the desert and how these things might be connected.
“Sometime in the past six months, the APA eliminated all references to the webpage described above, even going so far as to eliminate linked references to it on other webpages on its site. Covering/ trying to erase their bloody twisted tracks.
Jeff thanks for staying on this and all of your deep research. Wondering if any of the MSM talking heads will pick up on this.
WHEN WILL RACHEL, DYLAN, CHRIS MATTHEWS SOMEONE HAVE YOU ON TO DISCUSS THIS?
“Black psychotherapy”? I presume you are referring to the CIA term “black psychiatry,” as quoted in the article by Albarelli and myself at Truthout. There is no CIA “black psychotherapy”. The other term appears to be a shorthand for the use of psychiatric methods already well documented by Artichoke, MKULTRA, etc., and includes use of psychoactive drugs, hypnosis, etc.
I should have added, use of these methods on CIA subjects, and not on the population at large by psychiatrists.
Know one of the previous heads of Psychiatry at Rikers Island prison. He was a cocaine freak. Verified. He and his team were all about pumping prisoners full of drugs. Sounded like the main method of dealing with prisoners. He lost that job after being busted
So O tortures. Knock me over with a feather.
Yes, the Sunstein position relates to realizing that an increasingly growing segment of the population will not accept officially sanctioned narratives (whether true or not) and covert psychological actions may be necessary.
I am dismayed by the number of liberal friends I have who basically have turned their brains off once Obama became elected.
I have heard contradictory reports as to what the reporters for the MSM are working on regarding torture. Let’s not forget that reporters for Harpers and The Atlantic have moved the torture story a good deal forward in recent months (Scott Horton and Marc Ambinder). In addition, the NYT and Washington Post, along with BBC, broke significant new ground in investigating black site prisons under Obama. Jane Mayer at The New Yorker has been a primary investigator, and important articles have appeared at Vanity Fair, Salon, and elsewhere. On the other hand, I’ve heard some in the press don’t see torture as a big story anymore.
If I were going to single out a portion of the media that has been too docile on this it is the White House press corps, which appears to have given Obama practically a pass on this issue. On a more general, larger scale, the entire issue of how Obama has set up his own interrogation apparatus is very underreported. Ambinder noted that the administration has its own new super-secret Special Access Program (SAP) concerning interrogation.
If Rachel, Keith, etc. were to air a segment, how about one on Appendix M and the Army Field Manual? That topic goes straight to the heart of abuse, torture and U.S. treatment of prisoners.
What kind of evidence would they need to see to change their opinions? Or are they in for the duration because O gives a good speech?
Thanks for this information.
I remember back in November of 2009 when I mentioned psy-ops and mind control operations by the U.S. Government, people on this Blog at FDL called me “crazy” and said this “does not happen.” Well, it does happen and continues to do so.
As a matter of fact, the U.S. has been engaging in this mind control stuff for decades upon decades.
If you want to look the name of Cathy O’Brien up-do so. She is a survivor of mind control abuse at the hands of the United States government and you can access her interviews on the Internet–that is while the Internet is still available in its present form.
That’s odd; in my experience, it’s been the more recent converts that tend to be oblivious to the clay feet of their idol. The ones who’ve been at this awhile remain aware and frustrated. Even more so than usual, since this president seemed to have a better chance at being less beholden and hence less corrupt than others.
I exaggerate slightly. They are aware of the lack of “change” but basically they blame the GOP and Blue Dogs and for the weak results from Obama so far. It’s more like they had much optimism 5 months ago and are just realizing not much will change.
….meant 15 months ago.
One interesting aspect to me, is what do the psyoperators think they have gotten out of all their activity? One that I know about is that al-Libi was tortured into confessing a link between SH & AQ (subsequently reversed). But otherwise the “yield” seems quite slim.

Hey now, wait a minute, there are plenty of ways to feel empowered to be an American. When I was in high school, 30 years ago, an exchange student from Spain was green with envy at the privileges of American intellectuals. With that privilege, of course, has come great responsibility.
Just the other day, I was discussing this with a friend. Yes, I’m ashamed of what my gov’t has done in my name–no, wait, make that what some individuals have done acting under the color of law.
Since I’m mostly Caucasian (with at least one “injun in the wood pile,” so to speak), I identify, for example, with the Northeastern white Americans who helped run the Underground Railroad. I identify with the likes of Amy Goodman, Studs Terkel, Upton Sinclair, Mark Twain, and the host of real journalists and authors who’ve taught me so much. And so many others.
Today, I identify with the likes of Jeff Kaye, bringing to light purposeful, systematic, on-going abuse of the very sciences and arts that could be so helpful. I identify with the likes of EternalVigilance, masaccio, ThingsComeUndone, ubetchaiam, Leen, Larue, OldFatGuy, and the many other articulate, insightful, compassionate commenters here at FDL.
Yes, Elliott, as a nation, we’ve committed grave crimes, and are committing them even now. Still, America, the great experiment, ain’t over yet, right? The reports of the demise, of America’s promise, are greatly exaggerated.
IMO, that puts a moral obligation on all of us, to redeem our nation and our day. Don’t let the worst of us come to stand, for all time, for the rest of us. Despite our grave and constant crimes, we still have much to be proud of, and, in light of those very crimes, more to achieve.
The question is, America: are we up to the challenge?
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post up: Labor Making Push for the “Promoting American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act”

http://nationalexpositor.com/News/1432.html”
Natural News – After World War Two, scores of suspected Nazi war criminals were prosecuted by the Allies in the Palace of Justice in the city of Nuremberg, the birth-place of the Nazi Party. The defendants were drawn not just from the military, but also from medical, judicial, administrative, industrial, and other sectors of the German war machine.
Among the industrial prisoners charged with crimes against humanity were 24 managers of IG Farben, an organization without whom, according to U.S. Chief Prosecutor Telford Taylor, the Second World War would not have been possible.
In 1925, IG Farben, Interessengemeinschaft Farben, (Association of Common Interests), became a powerful cartel of German chemical and pharmaceutical companies such as Bayer (the aspirin manufacturer), BASF, AGFA, and Hoechst (now known as Aventis.) By 1933, the IG Farben group had become the largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporation in the world. And even today, although it doesn’t use the name IG Farben, its companies remain the most powerful transnationals on the planet in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and agro-chemicals.
The IG Farben cartel was crucial to the Nazi war effort by supplying synthetic fuel, rubber, and other chemicals. They also manufactured Zyklon-B, the nerve gas used to kill millions at the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Birkenau and elsewhere. The cartel, later known as the Devil’s Chemists, used unwilling inmates of the concentration camps as slave labourers and guinea pigs to test chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and vaccines. Tens of thousands died, and those who became too ill to be of any use were murdered in the gas chambers.
IG Farben worked closely with the Nazi regime and the SS and were perhaps the most important dynamic in driving the Nazi war machine, donating some 80 million Reichsmarks in return for chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries seized from occupied countries. Yet they could not have gotten to a position of such power without huge investment from John D. Rockefeller and his Standard Oil Company. Together with Rockefeller they set up a company called Standard IG Farben.”
Wondering if any Nazi (Pharma) criminals were involved with MK ULTRA?
I’m sorry to hear you were so vilified, but unfortunately not unusual. However, your example of O’Brien may not be the best one. Her claims (and others) about the existence of a Project Monarch, in which children were kidnapped and force to participate in mind control projects, is unverified. In fact, here is what Hank Albarelli wrote in a comment on our article at Truthout, worth reproducing here:
There are published articles and books by survivors, and they should be assessed by the same criteria by which any claim is assessed, and not immediately vilified nor immediately accepted. Sometimes, it is their children who have written the books (as many of these victims come from the 1950s-1970s, and going public on these things then was even harder than now). See Father, Son, and CIA by Harvey Weinstein (Google Books link, where you can read some of it online), or its later edition, renamed, Psychiatry and the CIA: Victims of Mind Control, published by American Psychiatric Publishing (of all publishing houses!) A number of the victims of Ewen Cameron came forward over the years.
I’ve corresponded with a few of the victims of MKULTRA, and I’d have to say they suffered from serious PTSD, and they were afraid of coming forward, and suffered a great deal. But they still wanted something to be done about what had happened to them. There were others who sued the government, for instance, and it is not their fault that the press ignored their story. See Albarelli’s book for some of those cases.
A great link. Thank you!
When are people going to accept that the government we see is the shadow. The real government, oligarchs from the MIC and banking/finance and industry are putting on the shadow puppet show for the American people.
Obama is either one of the before and he was BSer or is one of them now and he is a sweet talker, or is he one hell a blackmailed fella who does what he’s told or else.
Politics is a distraction from the atrocities and stealing and fascism which has descended over this nation.
My explanation as one who became concerned way back when the media was blathering about whether torture works or not, completely ignoring the morality and corruption it brings—-
This was the single issue I was most concerned about and expected Obama to end it. His betrayal leaves me feeling powerless. I suspect that is the feeling most liberals have
We should have known better. It is a rare leader that gives up power handed to him/her. That said. Moral outrage is alive and well and will find its ways to more visibility, hopefully eventually action.
Dear Jeff Kaye,
Thanks for your feedback. Here is some information as well.

“The IWG was established in January 11, 1999 and has overseen the declassification of about eight million pages of documents from multiple government agencies. Its mandate expires at the end of March 2005.
The documentation unearthed by the IWG reveals extensive relationships between former Nazi war criminals and American intelligence organizations, including the CIA. For example, current records show that at least five associates of the notorious Nazi Adolf Eichmann worked for the CIA, 23 other Nazis were approached by the CIA for recruitment, and at least 100 officers within the Gehlen organization were former SD or Gestapo officers. (Note 2)
The IWG enlisted the help of key academic scholars to consult during the declassification process, and these historians released their own interpretation of the declassified material last May (2004) in a publication called US Intelligence and the Nazis. The introduction to this book emphasizes the dilemma of using former Nazis as assets:
“The notion that they [CIA, Army Counterintelligence Corp, Gehlen organization] employed only a few bad apples will not stand up to the new documentation. Some American intelligence officials could not or did not want to see how many German intelligence officials, SS officers, police, or non-German collaborators with the Nazis were compromised or incriminated by their past service… Hindsight allows us to see that American use of actual or alleged war criminals was a blunder in several respects…there was no compelling reason to begin the postwar era with the assistance of some of those associated with the worst crimes of the war. Lack of sufficient attention to history-and, on a personal level, to character and morality-established a bad precedent, especially for new intelligence agencies. It also brought into intelligence organizations men and women previously incapable of distinguishing between their political/ideological beliefs and reality. As a result, such individuals could not and did not deliver good intelligence. Finally, because their new, professed ‘democratic convictions’ were at best insecure and their pasts could be used against them (some could be blackmailed), these recruits represented a potential security problem.” (Note 3)
The Gehlen organization profiled in the newly posted CIA history represents one of the most telling examples of these pitfalls. Timothy Naftali, a University of Virginia professor and consulting historian to the IWG who focused heavily on the declassified CIA material, highlighted the problems posed by our relationship with Gehlen: “Reinhard Gehlen was able to use U.S. funds to create a large intelligence bureaucracy that not only undermined the Western critique of the Soviet Union by protecting and promoting war criminals but also was arguably the least effective and secure in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As many in U.S. intelligence in the late 1940s had feared would happen, the Gehlen Organization proved to be the back door by which the Soviets penetrated the Western alliance.” (Note 4)
The documents annexed in the CIA history posted today by the Archive echo the observations of Professor Naftali. While placing much of the blame on the Army Counterintelligence Corps’ initial approach to Gehlen, this history emphasizes the CIA’s own reluctance to adopt responsibility for Gehlen’s organization, yet the documents show the CIA ultimately embracing Gehlen.
Some of the highlights from this secret CIA documentary history include:
* A May 1, 1952 report detailing how Gehlen and his network were initially approached by U.S. army intelligence. (Document 6)
* Two evaluations of the Gehlen operation from October 16 and 17, 1946, advising against the transfer of Gehlen’s organization to CIG hands and questioning the value of the operation as a whole. (Documents 21 and 22)
* A March 19, 1948 memorandum from Richard Helms, noting Army pressure for the CIA to assume sponsorship of the Gehlen organization, and continued concern over the security problems inherent in the operation. (Document 59)
* A December 17, 1948 report outlining the problems with the Gehlen organization, but ultimately recommending CIA assumption of the project. (Document 72)
As some have suggested in jest—Obama is America’s “First Microchip President.”
That Obama has ties to the CIA and other intelligence agencies is not as far-fetched, as those who want to live in denial, or, ignorance think. And the same is true for Bill Clinton as well. Explore the Clinton-Bush relationship and understand why in a democracy or a nation of supposed laws people like the Bush family do not get prosecuted for their crimes against humanity. Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush are not good pals for nothing ya know. It is well known in some circles that Bill Clinton’s trip to Moscow was not because he was some kind of radical of the left and such and such as the right wing clowns have suggested over the years. Rather, Bill Clinton was being used by the CIA to see what was going on with certain segments of the population in the Soviet Union. The same goes for Obama when he went overseas and did not get passports to go in and out of various countries before he was a “community organizer”—another front position to give him “legtimacy” to run for president.
Good day.
That Truthout article is both terrifying and riveting
Voodoo? Any truth to any of this?
http://www.conspiracyarchive.com/NWO/project_paperclip.htm
” The War Department’s Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency (JIOA) conducted background investigations of the scientists. In February 1947, JIOA Director Bosquet Wev submitted the first set of scientists’ dossiers to the State and Justice Departments for review.
The Dossiers were damning. Samauel Klaus, the State Departments representative on the JIOA board, claimed that all the scientists in this first batch were “ardent Nazis.” Their visa requests were denied.
Wev was furious. He wrote a memo warning that “the best interests of the United States have been subjugated to the efforts expended in ‘beating a dead Nazi horse.’” He also declared that the return of these scientists to Germany, where they could be exploited by America’s enemies, presented a “far greater security threat to this country than any former Nazi affiliations which they may have had or even any Nazi sympathies that they may still have.”
When the JIOA formed to investigate the backgrounds and form dossiers on the Nazis, the Nazi Intelligence leader Reinhard Gehlen met with the CIA director Allen Dulles. Dulles and Gehlen hit it off immediatly. Gehlen was a master spy for the Nazis and had infiltrated Russia with his vast Nazi Intelligence network. Dulles promised Gehlen that his Intelligence unit was safe in the CIA.
Apparently, Wev decided to sidestep the problem. Dulles had the scientists dossier’s re-written to eliminate incriminating evidence. As promised, Allen Dulles delivered the Nazi Intelligence unit to the CIA, which later opened many umbrella projects stemming from Nazi mad research. (MK-ULTRA / ARTICHOKE, OPERATION MIDNIGHT CLIMAX)
Military Intelligence “cleansed” the files of Nazi references. By 1955, more than 760 German scientists had been granted citizenship in the U.S. and given prominent positions in the American scientific community. Many had been longtime members of the Nazi party and the Gestapo, had conducted experiments on humans at concentration camps, had used slave labor, and had committed other war crimes.
In a 1985 expose in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Linda Hunt wrote that she had examined more than 130 reports on Project Paperclip subjects–and every one “had been changed to eliminate the security threat classification.”
President Truman, who had explicitly ordered no committed Nazis to be admitted under Project Paperclip, was evidently never aware that his directive had been violated. State Department archives and the memoirs of officials from that era confirm this. In fact, according to Clare[nce] Lasby’s book [Project] Paperclip, project officials “covered their designs with such secrecy that it bedeviled their own President; at Potsdam he denied their activities and undoubtedly enhanced Russian suspicion and distrust,” quite possibly fueling the Cold War even further.
Great stuff, Leen, much obliged.
Reminds me of William Astore’s piece for TomDispatch: The US military’s German Fetish:
What you’ve quoted, Leen, suggests, to me at least, the same kind of reduction-to-mechanism approach to psychology, what I call the mechanization and weaponization of humanity, the better to predict and control human behavior and events on the world stage. We’re not humans, nor even citizens in this way of thinking, just recalcitrant cogs in their Great Cosmic Perpetual Motion (and Bogus Holy War) Cash Machine.
You just have to wonder if any of Carl Camerons four part report on Israel spying and the drug ring that Cameron reported about soon after 9/11 ties into any of this?
This report was sure shut down rather fast. I believe Foxman and the I lobby forced Fox News to take this report off of their site.
This is a must watch. Just who is listening to whom. And why was this report about these Israeli students allegedly spying, Israeli based tele communication companies and investigation into this drug ring shut down?
Watch all four reports

Truman was the only one to not know if he didn’t. The rush to get our share of Nazi scientists, technicians bureaucrats was an open secret.
Pre war admiration of the German way was picked up immediately following VE Day. Patton among other military leaders was open in his admiration of the way the Nazis did things.
Speer was made a hero for his great prowess as an industrialist.
Anyone with half a mind knew we were appropriating their spies too.
My argument exactly: Why are we so effed in the head? It’s the malicious myth-making, people! Our shared narrative has been jacked with weaponized rhetoric (“strategic domestic disinformation campaigns”), by interests who use it only to manufacture our consent, to getting ever more jacked.
More great stuff.
Anyone interested in Nazis brought to America, Operation Paperclip, etc., should really get ahold of Linda Hunt’s excellent book (unfortunately out of print), Secret Agenda: The United States Government, Nazi Scientists, and Project Paperclip, 1945 to 1990. Published by St. Martin’s Press in 1991, Hunt was a former CNN reporter.
Although I cringe at the idea of downloading info from a site called “Illuminati”, etc., the info on that page is correct, and mostly cribbed from the Linda Hunt book I cited above. Hunt’s book is copiously documented.
The problem with websites such as the one you referenced is that they are a mixture of fact with unsubstantiated rumor, fantasy, and disinformation. When it comes to the kinds of subjects I’m writing about, it’s important to gauge your sources carefully. But yes, the material you quote is unfortunately all too real. The extent of Paperclip and its associated programs had a terrible impact upon this country.
that is what I thought.
That drug ring that Carl Cameron reported about was so interesting to me. And also how some of these students who were allegedly spying were
http://www.newsfollowup.com/id/docs/MemorandumtotheCommissionandSelectCommitteesbold.pdf
And that one of those alleged Israei students involved with this drug ring was released from prison via bail from an employee’s at Amdocs
Know this is another questionable site

Great point, TS, well said. As I see it, our problem, in rectifying these many terrible outrages that are hidden in plain sight, is to bring to the fore what “anyone with half a mind” has in the background of their worldview.
I don’t know anything about this kind of material, Israelis and 9/11 and all that. Not sure why you’re linking to it here. Also, went back and looked, and sure enough, at the end of the link to the Illuminati page you gave, after all the nicely cited material on Paperclip, the site author inserts a bunch of gobbledy-gook about the Illumanati world conspiracy stuff. This merely serves to undermine the credibility of the actual material presented above it.
I would not bother to use such sites to link to material. It’s fine to use them as a springboard for other web searches, but a link for reference to readers should go to a site that is clean, in the sense, it does not have unsubstantiated rumors or theories, unless clearly stated such material is that. The site doesn’t have to be “establishment”, but it should meet some kind of journalistic or academic standards for the production of “facts” or truths.
Amplifying Astore’s point about the creation of a class of warriors standing above and apart from ordinary Americans, Greenwald has this just up:
Look into the background of the electorates in the primaries he discusses. In what kind of cosmos do they believe? How was the world made, and how is it functioning today? By the fiat of an overtly male war-god miraculously endowed with limitless kinetic power, a King of kings, Lord of lords, etc.
With hymns like “Onward Christian Soldier, Marching Off to War,” humming in their heads; with the assumption that war is the way god makes the world work every day; that we have the freedom to do exactly as we’re told by the priests of The Great Father or go to hell forever and ever amen; is it any wonder what is assumed as an article of faith: life as holy war, isn’t debated in seasonal elections?
For the vast majority of us, life is believed to be an eternal holy war between Us Good-Doers Here against Them Evil-Doers There. Amen. Politics is about materializing those beliefs through public policy. As President Carter said to Secretary Albright, “what people believe as religion they will do as public policy.”
Life as holy war is an article of faith for the vast majority of Americans, I dare say again. I suspect that’s why it’s so easy to jack us to war with myths along the lines described by Goehring’s famous formula, tailored to the target audience.
The Evil Others Are Coming! Just like us preachers said god said would happen if you don’t do as we, his exclusive land-lords here on earth, say he says! (No, we can’t show you The Word of God, it’s top secret and POTUS eyes-only.) Quick, do exactly as you’re told, no questions asked. Asking questions betrays us all to The Evil-Doers. Only traitors have anything to hide. Keep your mouth shut, your head down, and your ass in line and no one, you know, gets hurt. That’s a good servant, here’s your token reward (please allow eternity for delivery).
This whole thing is just priceless; and you all have the nerve to call republicans and tea partiers extreme wackos.
Cue the cuckoo music, fire up the black helicopters… I’m sure there’s an Oliver Stone movie in this blather somewhere.
Short answer, Leen, never. They are all, everyone of them, part of the propaganda machine. They just play syncopation to the noise coming from FOX and the mainstream outlets but they are a part of the machine that is dumbing down this country and diverting us from what is going on. Rand Paul and his racism are part of everyday life; racism, whether subtle or overt, is part of everyday life and we aren’t going to end it in one fell swoop, it’s too important to the powers that be as a tool to keep all the poor and working people at each others’ throats while the rich divvy everything up.
You think they’re exploring Mars and the moon for scientific reasons? They’re looking for a viable fallback position where the rest of us can’t follow.
And meanwhile, while we stand shocked that an asshole from Kentucky doesn’t agree that whites and blacks should share the same physical space or, god forbid, the same utensils or dishes, the banks, insurance companies, and sundry other shylock enterprises are shoveling our money into offshore accounts so they can say there’s nothing to pay for social security with, sorry folks, but you’re on your own.
Do wish to elaborate about what in the article is so “whacko”? The attempts to de-legitimate this kind of story only serves the program of maintaining the status quo. I think I documented all that I’ve said, and when something was speculative, or unknown, I noted that.
Speaking for my own efforts, that goes double for the comments, VORE. Can you handle the closest verifiable account of events we can muster, as Bill Moyer defined truth in journalism? Can you articulate an alternative hypothesis? In a civil manner, with respect for your neighbors and fellow citizens? If you can, I’d be delighted to discuss any point I’ve made here.
Thank you, Jeff.
For this post, all of the other posts, both at FDL and elsewhere, and your steadfast, public, refusal to allow psychology to become merely another weapon to be used to degrade all of humanity to the dictates of a few a deranged and dangerous few.
As a nation we have left our humanity behind, as a society, that is, how we treat each other, we are already bereft of our reason. If, in our truculent belligerency, we engage in further warfare, as seems more than possible, then we will be, morally, little different from Nazi Germany, our treatment of others, whom we deny basic human rights and subject to torture, has already placed us beyond the pale …
BTW, Jeff, your post attract some of the best and most thoughtful comments around.
Thanks to all.
DW
I am lucky that FDL in general has some of the best, most thoughtful commenters around, and that’s a major reason I’m here.
Sixty comments and not a single mention of goats. Hrummph!
Yes, I wasn’t sure if I had the right word and I didn’t bother to look it up. Thanks for the correction.
I thought Jane Mayer was on my ‘side’ since she was reporting on it when so few would, then I saw an interview of her and it was obvious to me that she found torture titillating. I think that is just plain sick. It is also all too common among reporters and in general they hide it well.
I know what I am talking about, I married one of them. He was in journalism school when we met and had a job as a reporter when we were newlyweds. I have partied with these people. He left the field because he specifically complained about being ignorant. He wanted to report from a place of knowledge so he went to school to study the natural world and fell in love with geology. I’d much rather be married to a geologist than a reporter so I encouraged him to change fields.
Last year I took the same class he had when we were dating, newspaper production at the local junior college. Nothing had changed, but it was very obviously corrupt and I dropped the class in a panic when I felt my life was being threatened. I told them I was running for congress …
The whole thing was quite an experience. I think a lot of the things that happened to me there were CIA and staged.
I know what you say is true because when I first started on my girl scout political action project to win religious freedom for my people, I told one of my friends about it and what she told me let me know that hot girls who check into mental institutions end up as CIA mind control prostitutes. Of course she didn’t put it that way. She said she was given drugs and sent to fancy parties to have sex with people and then tell her doctor ALL about it.
I felt what they were doing to me was deliberately inducing PTSD and then demanding that it was all in my head because theoretically, I was suddenly bi-polar.
Poisons were prescribed for me which I refused to take. Of course I was being accused of being delusional too. The whole experience was really awful and either my husband was a victim of Kaiser ‘mental health’ along with me, or he is an agent who manipulated them into mistreating me, or they were both in on it.
The whole thing was very corrupt and very much according to the APA guidelines. Scary and sick! Dangerous for activists too, what they did to me is fairly typical. What was not typical is that I escaped their trap. So far.
Power is a rush and it can be addicting. Have you looked into how the corruption of the drug war plays into all of this? I think it has taken over. That is why I came up with the slogan,
I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!
What I wish we could do is help the people who run such sites to clean up their facts and presentation, or expose them as corporate tools. I suspect their unscientific presentation is more a sign of ignorance than ill will, unless of course it is what I call a Fake Left.
The forces of evil put lot of them out there, just to make us look bad if for no other reason but mostly for misleading us with disinformation. It would be really nice if the average person who is not so knowledgeable had some idea of the quality of the information they are getting. Is there some geeky rating?
This explains why people like Chuck Todd say things like “from 20,000 feet …” and “political food fight” when they should be talking up the important issues instead. In the media it is a cover up; a whole lot of them are in on it.
Are they so far gone that they actually believe themselves? I’d call that a serious case of group mental illness. I think they even have a name for it, “group think.” I call it treason and a conspiracy.
