The other day I wrote about the fight back by former Guantanamo detainee David Hicks regarding the lies told about him by the Detainee Assessment Brief released as part of large and ongoing document leak by Wikileaks. Another Australian also previously incarcerated at Guantanamo, and even more horrifically tortured, if that’s possible, by the U.S. and its allies, has filed suit in an Egyptian court against his tormenter, former Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman, who for 15 years or more was chief of intelligence in that country. Habib’s JTF-GTMO summary is also available at the Wikileaks site.
The summary states that Habib admitted “under extreme duress” various terrorist activities and knowledge while under interrogation in Egypt, where he was sent via the U.S. program of “extraordinary rendition.” Habib recanted these confessions once at Guantanamo. This didn’t keep intelligence officials of labeling him as of “high” intelligence value, maintaining that Habib had knowledge of Al Qaeda financing, safe houses, training and tactics, operations in Thailand and Singapore, along with associations with the 9/11 German terrorist cell. All of these were lies, induced by torture.
While Mr. Habib has not released a fact sheet to answer these charges, he has been aggressively pursuing a redress for the lies and crimes done to him. His lawsuit against the powerful Suleiman, who until recently was fully supported by the Obama administration during the Egyptian uprising, goes along with articles, speaking engagements, and his own book on his life and treatment in the U.S. gulag, My Story: the Tale of a Terrorist Who Wasn’t. Mubarak’s son, Gamal, is also named in the suit.
Habib has now spoken out on the claims cited in his Guantanamo assessment brief, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Referring to claims that he was planning the hijacking of a Quantas airplane, and other assertions in the Guantanamo document, the ABC article says:
Mr Habib, who was released from Guantanamo Bay without charge in 2005, says it is possible he admitted to things he did not do because Egyptian interrogators drugged him.
But he says he would not have said he was going to hijack a Qantas plane, because it is not true and he was being set up.
“Maybe some stuff happened by me under drugs, I’m not aware of it, to be honest,” he said.
“But as to a wake up person, I’m talking as very awake and I know, I’m knowledge, what’s going on, I never admit to anything, no.”
What follows is a little from Habib’s book, from the section where he was tortured by Suleiman:
He [Suleiman] continued, ‘If you tell us you knew about the attacks on the Trade Center on September 11th — that you were involved and that you were planning further attacks when you were picked up — if you tell us this, we can sell this information to the Americans for 10 million dollars. We’ll give you 4 million and we’ll keep the rest. You will then be under a witness-protection program…’
At this time, all I knew was that the World Trade Center in New York had been hit, but I had no idea about the other hit on the Pentagon and the failed hit on the White House. I had no idea of the immensity of 9/11…
I was sitting in a chair, hooded, with my hands handcuffed behind my back. He came up to me. His voice was deep and rough. He spoke to me in Egyptian and English. He said, ‘Listen, you don’t know who I am, but I am the one who has your life in his hands. Every singles person in this building has his life in my hands. I just make the decision.’
I said, ‘I hope your decision is that you make me die straight away.’
‘No, I don’t want you to die now. I want you to die slowly.’ He went on, ‘I can’t stay with you; my time is too valuable to stay here. You only have me to save you. I’m your saviour. You have to tell me everything, if your want to be saved. What do you say?’
‘I have nothing to tell you’….
Then they took me to another room, where they tortured me relentlessly, stripping me naked and applying electric shocks everywhere on my body. The next thing I remember was seeing the general again. He came into a room with a man from Turkistan; he was a big man but was stopped over, because his hands were chained to the shackles of his feet, preventing him from standing upright.
‘This guy is no use to us anymore. This is what is going to happen to you. We’ve had him for one hour, and this is what happens.
Suddenly, a guy they called Hanish, which means snake, came at the poor man from behind and gave him a terrible karate kick that sent him crashing across the room. A guard went over to shake him, but he didn’t respond. Turning to the general, the guard said, ‘Basha, I think he’s dead.’
‘Throw him away then. Let the dogs have him.’
They dragged the dead man out. [pp. 111-114]

I see no comments, thought the article has made it onto the “Recent Diaries” page. I wrote the piece in a manner to leave one speechless. Or more honestly, after finishing with the quote from Habib’s book, I couldn’t find anything to say. The horror left me inarticulate and in shock.
I believe it is just this kind of psychological experiencing that torture is meant to work, as if it carried around its own force field that keeps anyone from approaching it too closely, as the psychic pain engendered thereby is too intense.
Still, I thought it better to write than to stay silent.
Mahalo, Jeff…! And to think Obama wanted Suleiman as Mubarak’s successor after Tahrir Square…! 8-(
Thanks very much for this, Jeff, and for your entire body of work in this area.
Nit: The corporate name for the ABC is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
A startling number of things, these days, Jeff, appear to be so overwhelming that people are frightened away from any … or all consideration.
I have found, for example, that any mention that America and Americans might face a consequence from the beleaguered rest of the world’s people for our hubris and collective inhumanity gets nary a bite.
And, I note that a particularly chilling post of EW’s “handsome” as bmaz proclaimed it to be and “looking forwardy” “cute” as I termed it, got but four responses …
I guess that some things are simply too awful to consider?
Please know, although I do not always leave a comment, I always read what you write … and appreciate every single word and the deep and true conscience which I know is behind them.
That the words of Hicks and Habib are denied access to America’s conscience, such as it is or might be, means that your words have an even greater and especial value and impact..
As ever, Jeff, I thank you for your thoughts and understandings, far more deeply more than my words may convey.

Nice work Jeff…but folks this is going to be tough, the corruption is so damn thick, that this effort seems like spitting in the wind.
None of our Governmental institutions has any credibility or integrity.Seems to me the only possibility we have left is to go into the streets.
How did Habib know it was Sulieman if Habib was hooded? Was it bc he subsequently saw Sulieman & could then attach the voice to the face?
Gee. Now where have I heard that before? From the folks holding Bradley Manning? Oh right. (hat tip EmptyWheel)
He discusses this in his book, as he was always fighting to see, and there was often a gap for him to see through the hood. I don’t know that he was hooded for all his experiences with Suleiman. In the book he mentions he recognizes his face the first time they meet, from the newspaper, I believe. I’d have to go back and double-check that, but I’m at work and don’t have the book with me.
Thanks for sharing this. So he’s filed the suit in Egypt? That should be interesting. I’d like to see al-Libi’s estate do the same. I don’t think you can expect much, but it’s good to see that they are chipping away, trying to keep the fight going.
Hi, Jeff, thanks for posting this. Usually am only able to catch up on FDL posts after work at night, occasionally during luch, but always try to read your posts.
You are right, it leaves me speechless, with a huge know in my chest to read these kinds of stories. Makes me ashamed of my government. There are no doubt perhaps hundreds of stories like this one – I am reminded of Taxi to the Dark Side.
Best to you and yours.
Hi Jeff, I recognize this man, he was act 3 in my flag in three acts comments I left in emptywheel diary Nine Years of Nudity in American Detention not long ago:
1. 1814
2. 1949
3. 2001
Of note, info on Habib in #3 from Jane Mayer refers to a particular thug with a tattoo — is he in your story?
And Jeff, thanks for all you do.
Amen and recommended. It’s very hard to add anything to such horror.
Yet we must know.
Somewhat belatedly, I’ll chime in with kudos as well, both for this post and for your body of work, Jeff.
Of all the things that have gone wrong with this country over the last 11 years, torture is the issue I’ve paid the most attention to. Have read “Torture Team” by Sands, “Guantanamo Files” by Worthington, “The Torture Debate” by Greenberg, currently reading Mayer’s “The Dark Side.” And lotsa articles.
In an e-mail to me some time ago, Philippe Sands said “Push the media.” That’s what we gotta keep doing.
Your post is fine writing and construction, as always, Jeff.
It’s hard to find anything to say about all of this anymore. We were debating about the ifs, truths, lies, and connections for years as you assembled the picture. I feel there is a critical mass of information available now. And many people are speaking out and writing.
Critical mass means we see the same language applied to Manning as was applied during the torture sessions.
No intelligent, sane person can deny all the evidence now.
We must keep going, writing and reading … even on the days when there seems nothing left to say. Because not everyone has heard yet.
Thank you so much.
I have shared my worst fears about our country and torture with those who care. I sometimes feels so sick about all of this, that there are no words. (as others have eloquently stated…DW…thank you). The worst pain of all, comes from the fact that these stories have the power to provoke controversy over the use of torture. There should be no controversy about torture and it pains me to absolute distraction, that there is.
It is invalidation at it’s finest. The exquisite pain and horror that comes from the realization that there are human beings alive, breathing, procreating, who do not see the absolute evil in this. For all of us, the inability to see it is the ultimate sin. And worst of all, for me, is that many of these “folks” are religious. They say they believe in God, but that have a dichotomous view that it’s okay to behave in an evil manner to someone judged (rightly or not is irrelevant) to be evil. They are blind to the fact that this belief is evil. In their vernacular it is the devil crawled up inside them eating them and their serenity alive.
Tears always come as I consider this. I work with clients, and I try to help them heal their trauma’s by teaching skills of non judgment, dialectical thinking, emotion regulation, exposure therapy for the trauma and fear. But the ones I cannot reach honestly, are so often the religious ones. I lost a family in therapy yesterday. He kept wanting to discuss politics. I veered and steered around. “Glen Beck’s really got the truth, doesn’t he?” and I say, “well he’s interesting”. It’s obvious…my politicial inclination, because as I state a desire not to discuss politics, he keeps asking me questions. His wife is a rageholic. His children addicts, live in fear and stress.
He says he feels “darkness” when he talks to me. (in all my sharing about love, and how non judgment helps us to remove obstacles to love and at the same time helps us with the facts we need to set boundaries). He and she, cannot stay. I said the word “evolve” in a skills class. I suggested that they might have compassion for a daughter that went out using again. Their brains cannot handle the dichotomy. They are unable to love or trust anyone who does not share their God, or their views. They say that they don’t watch the news, but they are avid viewers of faux news. It’s like looking at a different species. All I know to do is to love them. I look into their eyes of hate and fear and love them back. I know it all comes from fear, but the fact that it is inpenetrable at this time, with love, blows me away. No, it’s not God that they believe in, and if it is, I would rather be struck by lightening and go to hell.
Keep telling the truth, keep validating the invalid…and know that the silence comes from a deep inner pain…I knew I needed to comment when I saw that there were none, but I felt so tired. I cannot imagine the toll on you. Sending love out there to all who care, who know deep down how truly evil this stuff is. Who are willing to feel the pain, who have the bravery to face it and carry it.
Jeff, did you notice the comment from the (ret) Medical Corp reservist on your previous article? [FYI]
{{{Thanks}}}
Interesting response which “Monty’s” comment received.
Well worth a gander, harpie, I assure you.
