So White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, this diary is for you. How dare you suggest that my complaints about Obama have to do with drug addiction. To say this, to take a Republican right-wing meme and turn it on us, it’s sinister, and abusive. It’s a power and control move to say "If you are complaining, you should not be heard." But here’s the deal. I want to be heard. I want you to understand why so many Americans are unhappy with President Obama. It’s not because we are on drugs and just distorting our reality. No, it’s because you have a distortion about reality for the middle class. Here’s my reality, Mr. Gibbs…
1) My husband is a union construction worker. His union crew got hired to work for a local contractor who is anti-union. They call the job "Code of Excellence." They have a "Three strikes you are out" policy on illness or injury, knowing full well that 250 guys sit the bench waiting for work. They use this to their advantage. This week the heat index in Omaha has been over a 110-115 degrees every day and this will continue through Friday. My husband is building a multimillion dollar ball field with tax payer money while we are laying off teachers and policemen and taxing every thing we can. My husband is glad for the job, but yesterday, the contractor failed to get water to the second tier where my husband was working. They also refuse to buy carts so the crew can carry their tools with them instead of running back and forth from the job box. So for the last three hours of the day, there was no water for the guys on the second tier of the job. Do you know who you tell when this happens and 250 guys sit the bench? No one. You keep your mouth shut and hope and pray you can drink enough water overnight to stay hydrated. The climate has changed and clearly a worker is just a body. . . .
2) Maybe I am angry, Mr. Gibbs, because I have a predatory loan with GMAC and have spent literally eight years trying to keep my house. Maybe it’s because the new finance reform does nothing to stop GMAC from charging me outrageous fees. It does nothing to force GMAC to refinance through HAMP with me. It doesn’t give my bankruptcy judge jurisdiction to stop their illegal behavior. Maybe it’s because as I pay off my Chapter 13 bankruptcy, with my debt on the house completely repaid through the court, GMAC says I owe $10,000 more than I did when the bankruptcy started. Maybe it’s because the only way I can stop this is to sue them, which requires that I record every payment I ever made on a database to fight their inaccurate bottom line — which means that they would immediately throw me into foreclosure once the bankruptcy is resolved.
3) Or maybe it’s because I was laid off from my job a year ago in an agency where I worked for 12 years. Maybe it’s because I started my own business very happily but unfortunately got sick this spring. I got sick because of a surgery that took place 10 years ago, contracting a MRSA infection while under the knife, which did not blow up and rear its head until this spring. The mesh infection caused a blood infection so they had to remove the mesh and undo the first surgery to get rid of the MRSA. But guess what? I contracted two more infections while having surgery to fix the first one. That meant 10 more days in the hospital and four more surgeries. My self-employed status is okay but it’s awfully hard when you aren’t able to work at all. Then to top it off, our medical bills will be well over our heads. And we will have to fight for every dime as they deny one expense after another. Insurance companies don’t like to pay for hospital-acquired infections. They blame the hospital and then the hospital blames the patient and then…nobody pays the bill. Nothing in the health reform to help us with this problem. Nothing.
Maybe Mr. Gibbs it’s because the unions are losing power and you aren’t helping us. Maybe it’s because finance reform does little to impact those suffering from out and out mortgage fraud. Maybe it’s because medical costs and insurance are too high. I could spend the rest of my life doing the paper work and follow up for the mortgage company, and the insurance company that will deny a majority of my claims without my diligent care, but that leaves little time for me to spend with my kids. Like so many middle-class Americans I am just trying to survive. How dare you suggest that my complaints are invalid or misinformed. I am living it.
The economy is stalled precisely because of a lack of jobs, medical and health care costs, POOR medical care and medical errors, with absolutely no recourse for middle America when the corporate world makes a mistake. It seems to me that while your administration has put a bandaid on my gaping 10-inch surgical wound, you have done very little to treat the underlying problem that corporate America has too much control over our lives. We want to see you fight corporate America, not bloody the eyes of left-wing liberals and then kick us to the curb calling us drug addicts if we complain.
I have never felt more angry and more disappointed. I wish Mr. Gibbs would ask me why I complain…ask me, and I will give you the facts of my life. I know that while we suffer at my house, my life is not much different from others.

Thanks, wavpeac, appreciate hearing some righteous anger.
Nice post. I think all of us, for a plethora of reasons, have very legitimate complaints. And it is not just that the Obama Administration has “not done enough”, although there is certainly that, it is also how imperious, antagonistic and belligerent they have been with honest citizens that worked hard and voted for them only to be turned on and find they were lied to. What jackasses.
This adminisrtation is beginning to sound like Nixon’s. The Silent Majority not the Hippie drugies are the real Americans.
‘nattering nabobs of netrootsism !’
cbl2, LOL
Ya beat me to it, sistah!
ah, but it’s actually the vocal minority that they are making believe is a silent majority
I worry they coordinated with Republicans to start the campaign to dismantle Social Security. Obama used a need to be bipartisan for promote a Republican agenda.
wavpeac – check your email. ;-)
Okay, now they are just provoking us.
Thanks for putting this up as a diary and an open letter wavpeac. Infuriating doesn’t been to cover how offensive Mr. Gibbs’ comments, and frankly the White House’s attitude as a whole, really is.
wondering if Bill White should be “drug tested” for not showing up yesterday :D?
oops, forgive me wavpeace – thanks, and rec.
recommended!! Very nice diary wavpeac ☺
Excellent diary. Rec’d. I have already sent a really nasty e-mail to the WH re Mr. Gibbs. As far as I’m concerned this is the last straw. It was bad enough when Rahm called us f****** retards and this is the end for me.
BTW, according to Huff Post, Mr. Gibbs is apologizing.
Not accepted by me. It’s too late.
Good luck wavpeace, your not alone out here. Millions upon millions of us are suffering through this and we really didn’t appreciate the kick in the groin from Mr. Gibbs and his boss. It’s obvious, that DC hasn’t a clue @ what’s happening out here.
I see in his walk back, Gibbs says he watches too much cable tv…
have been wondering since the story broke if his frustration sprang from the “professional left” infecting the major donor class with some doubts – makes me think some Party Poo Bah questioned them on something like Christina Romer’s departure and the Summers/WH Boys Club – seems to be about the only thing that would piss ‘em off
LOL…yep tricky Dicky lives
Great diary, recommended.
Gibbs’ heartfelt remarks and insincere apology were certainly the last straw for me. Anyone who thinks we should keep taking this abuse from Dear Leader and his minions should be drug tested.
Amen, they must be smoking crack
Agreed!
The thing about Obama is that essentially all his policies are the same as Bush’s except where he’s worse.
So, for example, Obama is worse on education than Bush.
Obama is worse on military spending than Bush.
Corporate profits are even higher under Obama than Bush with wages lower.
The wealth gap has never been more extreme…under Obama.
Bush never had an assassination policy against U.S. citizens as another example.
One could go on and on…
An apology is not enough…when you are struggling to survive. What we need is validation for the reality that we are living. The only apology that would matter to me, is one in which Obama starts to understand that he’s done very little to stop the corporate assault on our lives.
No, an apology is definitely not enough.
Thanks for this, recommended.
He knows what he’s doing. He’s a smart boy. He licks the hand that feeds him. And that aint us. He’s the front man for the corporations/wall street/mic. He’s accelerated the moral and economic descent of our country with his pandering to the people who pay him. Ordinary Americans suffer. We lose yet more of our rights and privacy and the wealthy get wealthier. That’s Obama’s program. It’s a feature. The rest of us and our suffering are santized in his eyes as collateral damage.
Excellent diary, Wavpeac. Recommended. My heart goes out to you and your family.
Even my heart goes out to you…and I don’t even have one.
Way to say it, wavpeac! I’m sorry to hear about all your problems. I too am struggling with GMAC, and my medical bills (I have cancer) have gone to collections because I can either pay them or my $1163 per month health insurance premium- which I’m putting on a credit card that will soon be maxed out. But at least we’re not having a heat wave here in Oakland…
I know for certain that I am not alone and that my situation pales in comparison to many. It just makes me so angry that the Obama administration fails to acknowledge the extent of our suffering while he continues to back away from tough decisions like holding the finance industry accountable. It’s really awful what these companies have done. And there is growing evidence that health problems and foreclosure go hand in hand. No one is sure why the correlation is so high. Perhaps the cause of financial distress and/or the stress causes the illness in response to the foreclosure situation and dealing with these unethical companies.
Being an American right now causes health problems. No other industrialized country allows people to lose their house and their livelihood, or to just plain die, for lack of health care. It’s a crime and Obama has done nothing but make it worse with his insurance industry bailout disguised as a healthcare bill. I went through a “strategic foreclosure” earlier this year and I haven’t had health insurance for 10 years. I have a good job and I’m healthy but I am one accident or illness or job loss away from the situation that you find yourself in. My thoughts are with you.
“No other industrialized country allows people to lose their house and their livelihood, or to just plain die, for lack of health care.”
You’ve got to be kidding me! You think Santa exists or something?
We need some pain or people like you will continue to buy i-phones for their three year olds.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an assinine response, even from you, oh heartless one.
I would tell you what I really think of you, but it would never get past the mods.
Instead of intentionally trying to instigate, why not spend your time somewhere else? Or do you get off knowing you’ve intentionally instigated awful feelings in some other human being?
I agree OFG tinman is a very hollow individual no place in polite society if you live by the creed of “I got Mine and everyone else get Fucked”.
tinman = hollow, empty inside, no heart no soul! Just nothing…
You ever think about making an appointment with a mental health professional? That would be my suggestion to you. Whatever you decide to do, can you please go do it somewhere else?
Great posting Wavepeac!
My most heartfelt wishes go out to you and yours and the multitude of others who suffer these unforgivable assaults upon our well being, health, and sanity.
Gibbs is just a reflection of how these asswads really feel and think about the ‘small people’ in this country. They are totally clueless to the real suffering because they have purposely manifested a shield of indifference and mean spiritedness to innoculate themselves from actually ‘feeling’ anything.
It has been said that all people have some goodness within themselves somewhere. This prez and his minions along with the rest of the governing cabal make finding that goodness a very daunting task…finding a needle in a very putrid haystack!
Because of that lack of real compassion, we all pay dearly, but there will come a time when they will have their immorality and mean spiritedness come round and bite them in the ass like a rabid karmic snake!
** standing on chair clapping **
Testify, wavpeac, testify!
our politicians have split loyalties. we need to grab them (nonviolently) and get them set straight.
OK, I finally have to ask.
What does recommended mean? I see it all the time here. Who or what are you recommending (the Diary itself I guess?) and to whom or what are you recommending it?
I keep seeing “Recc’d” or “Recommended” or something lots here at FDL and for some time now and kept thinking at some point someone would explain it but NO ONE EVER HAS.
So, please, excuse my stupidity and explain what that means? I mean I recommend FDL and certain posts to my friends all the time. Sometimes I email them with links. Is that what you mean?
The more recommendations a diary receives, the higher and longer it stays in the “Top Ten Diaries” list that appears on the left hand side of the Seminal front page below the topmost post as well as in the right hand column on the front page at FDL.
If a diary gets promoted to the left hand column at The Seminal, it no longer shows in the Diaries list to the right and no longer has a “Recommend” button but it will stay in the top ten list if it was already there until bumped by newer diaries.
“Recommend” button?
Where would I find a “Recommend” button? Each post has one until it gets “promoted?”
Look under the last line of the diary.
Right now it reads, from left to right,
29 comments Recommend Spotlight
Click on that middle one if you so desire.:)
I’m not seeing that. Is it my browser?
I’m using IE whatever the latest is on a Vista machine.
Oh wait, ok.
Right above TAGS????
Mine says 32 comments, Spotlight.
That’s it.
Yes, that is where the Recommend button WAS for this diary, but since it has been promoted to the Top left hand side of The Seminal, it loses the Recommend button (Diaries that are Front paged to FDL do not lose the Recommend button – only if promoted to the Left hand side at The Seminal)
Gotcha.
I just looked at another post and right above TAGS, in tiny blue letters, it had:
No Comments Recommend (Picture of a flashlight) Spotlight
Boy.
OK, now that I feel like a complete jerk for reading and approving of about a thousand posts here and not recommending them, could you tell me what the spotlight one means?
Thanks.
I won’t bother anymore. I know we’re supposed to ask OT stuff at LN or LNN. Sorry for OT.
I think “Spotlight” is supposed to allow folks to highlight posts to TradMed for coverage but I’ve heard a rumor that the group that developed the tool no longer even supports it.
Front paging seems to remove the recommend button…
You people have been down on Gibbs all day. He must be hitting close to home.
Actually, we lefties are very open about disciplining the idiots among us.
Apparently the right isn’t doing a very good job with their discipline, or you’d be doing something far more constructive with your time.
I voted for that idiot in the White House too.
Oh, I guess that makes bashing members of our community who’ve been through a lot of pain all right then, huh?
Just like banksters on Wall Street do.

I doubt that anyone in the West Wing ever has to worry about becoming dehydrated while at work.
Just imagine all of those aides suffering some of the results of dehydration, one of which is vertigo… veering from one side of the political spectrum to the other. Oh, wait… they already do that.
Congratulations wavpeac you have been front paged for an excellent diary and lively discussion!!☆ ✰ ✮ ✯ ya earned them!
Thank you, wavpeac.
I wish the “major” columnists, like Frank Rich, Bob Herbert, Paul Krugman et al. would feature an individual story of those in pain from Obama EVERY DAY. Y’know, kinda like they do the “Faces of the Fallen” re those in Iraq/Afghanistan, or the “Neediest Families” at Christmas time.
We need to see, EVERY DAY, the human face of the misery Obama, the Republicans, the Blue Dogs and Geithner-Dodd-Bernanke-Summers-Rubin-Paulson et al. have brought upon this nation.
You, and all of us, are “real people,” not statistics.
Obama cares about two things: (1) where his next campaign donation is coming from and (2) where his next book deal is coming from.
He cares not a whit about your or my problems, unless they are going to affect (1) or (2) above.
gibbs and obama are using an old trick;
find a common enemy
obama is trying to “get with” the republicans, the fact that gibbs actually compared a public option to canada as if canada is a bad word, and for him to make believe the public option was an easier solution then the one obama decided means he is trying to cast the majority of americans as the villain
Hey folks take a gander at the DKOS post on Gibblets. These people will never leave the Obama fold. Surreal stuff, man.
Yeah, I think I’ll pass….
Has any other Administration in U.S. history shown such open contempt for the people who put them into office? I fully expect them to start flipping us the bird. The Obacrats seem especially indignant at the idea that they should try to do what we hired them to do.
Then there are the hardy few who honest-to-God think Obama is doing a terrific job, thus raising cognitive dissonance to the level of an art form.
Indeed, while there remain some glued to the base in the face of policies and attitudes going from bad to worse, the rest of what was the base has thinned considerably. I’m in the thinned wing of the progressive movement.
Great diary, I’m so glad it made the front page
I’ve been unemployed for almost two years. So far since Sunday, I have sent out resume’s for everything from project manager, to entry level office help, to retail, to diesel mechanic. I haven’t used drugs in decades and I haven’t even smoked weed since I’ve been out of work just on the off chance I may have to take a drug screen. I’m suffering and yes, I’m a liberal who is not happy with what the Obama administration has done for the banks but has refused to do for me. Mr Gibbs, you are loathsome.
Shorter Gibbs: “Clap louder and shut the fuck up”.
He sounds like a 12 year old [Edited by Moderator. Not even as snark]
Kos himself points out that Obama’s approvals are way down among Liberals.
Obama has to be trying to tank the elections.
It sure looks that way.
NEWSFLASH, Obama doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about the well being of your family, friends, or neighbors. He got his, screw you jack. Last week, Chelsea Clinton had a $4 million dollar wedding. That came out to around $80,000 per guest. These people are the ruling class. They are the new American Monarchy. They don’t care about you or your own. They would think nothing about killing and torturing you and your children if it meant holding onto their power. Don’t ever forget that.
Hear, hear, man! You speak the truth. As Chomsky points out, it’s just two sides of the elite fighting to rule the rest of us (paraphrasing, of course).
I put this on another Gibbs thread a little earlier…
Which fascist is currently head propagandist doesn’t really matter much to me. My problem is with the fascism and war crimes part, not which fascist is speaking for the group.
This…
“Carol Rosenberg brings us the details on Monday’s decision from Guantanamo Military Commission Judge Colonel Patrick Parrish, allowing all confessions of Omar Khadr to be admitted into evidence:
All of Canadian captive Omar Khadr’s confessions to U.S. military interrogators can be used at the accused teen terrorist’s trial, including one that followed a tawdry tale of rape, a war court judge ruled Monday to set the stage for the first full war crimes tribunal of the Obama administration.
Khadr’s lawyers claimed that Guantánamo’s youngest and last Western prisoner was tortured into confessing soon after his capture at age 15 following a firefight in Afghanistan when he was shot twice through the chest….”
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/64313
…is fascism. This is like 6-7 different Bush/Cheney era war crimes Obama swore he’d eliminate in one place that he not only didn’t eliminate, he’s taken the United States further into territory of war crimes.
I want a International War Crimes Tribunal for the Bush AND Obama White Houses.
Great post. Some other sites and MSM should get off the theoretical binge and begin down to earth analysis like this. There is war in this country – worker versus rich, and all the rest is distraction.
Obama, Rahm, Robert Gibbs, David Axelrod, are intentionally wrecking the Democratic Party.
Gibbs knows, Obama has done nothing that benefits progressives.
Gibbs will not read the diary above, because he help create the pain and suffering americans feel today.
remember Clinton gave Unions NAFTA. Clinton knew that this would hurt UNIONS, the people that help him get elected.
What Poll in the last two years said americans wanted the Bob Dole Health Care Plan more than a fixed economy? No Poll
The only ISSUE in the USA since Obama got elected has been the economy! Obama, Gibbs, Rahm, Axelrod, all know this! they are not that stupid.
Gibbs knows Obama is a trojan horse, seeking to destroy the Democratic Party.
Gibbs, Axelrod, are political hacks, welcome to the OBAMA Hope A Dope!
Gibbs is counting on his buddies the Republicans making progressives so mad that they will vote for Obama in 2012. this = the HOPE A DOPE!
Progressive must come to grips with the fact that OBAMA is more REAGAN, BUSH, than FDR, JFK.
The elites think everyone is STUPID!
Gibbs game plan is simple! How you keep Progressive out to the White House.
1st you wreck the Democratic party, you trash the Dem Base, this will help Republicans get elected in 2010
2nd Obama will lie about he hates working with his friends Republicans in 2011
3rd Obama will campaign in 2012, like he some progressive SAVIOR, knowing all the time he is BUSH.
The HOPE A DOPE is simple, and effective.
It’s not wrecking… It’s wrecked. Done. It’s over.
We need to move along. We don’t have a lot of time.
We need to get all the people in the United States that do not want the US to go any closer to a Fascist system of government to join together and throw the corrupt Fascist oligarchy running DC out of the nation’s capital.
Word.
Gibbs has been “misspeaking” from day one. Can’t wait to cast my vote against Oboover–professionally speaking, of course.
Thanks for this wavpeac. To find the energy to write such a heartfelt piece is really special.
Nothing like like battling the insurance frauds and mortgage criminals while you are still recovering from a SERIOUS illness while also worrying about whether your husband will survive a boss that makes the Pharaohs look enlightened and climate change which all 4th-rate “scientists” deny.
Rest assured on this however, you are NOT alone. There are literally billions of others around the world with a life just as shitty! How much comfort you can actually take from this fact is debatable but in every possible way, you belong to the largest group of people with shared interests on earth. The number of folks who actually benefit from this crazy economy is TINY. Time to bully these criminals!
Great post; sorry about your family’s situation, which is reflective of many other citizens’ plights in this once-great nation of ours.
It’s not just that BHO – via his mouthpiece, Gibbs – flipped off the dfh progressives with his nasty attacking verbal abuse. The bottom line is that BHO is flipping off all small people by Gibbs’ attacking remarks. Commentators, pundits, Tea Partiers can laugh and think it just applies to dreaded liberals, but really, it doesn’t. It applies to all citizens who are not part of the corporate elite.
So sickened of this, plus not feeling great about the rank arrogance on display by BHO. What I feel is: who the eff do you think you are???
Gibbs apologized for talking that way, and what’s even funnier is who graciously accepted the apology on behalf of the Left in order to set an example for the snottier ones of us who might hesitate to accept it: Donna Brazile.
Wouldn’t 2-way TV be the MOST FUN EVER?
Gibbs did not apologize for his remarks. He apologized for the way he said them. There’s a difference. He is unrepentant.
He sent one of his staff out to explain because he had a “sore throat.” Oh sure.
What pathetic bullshit from a snivelling coward who can’t bear to be accountable. These people have a lot of work to do.
Just when I thought Donna Brazile’s acceptance of Gibbs’ apology couldn’t be any funnier.
Gibbs doesn’t care about you or your family or what you have to endure every day. That boy and his little child bosses don’t care. None of the filth in the halls of power care about us. We are serfs — lazy, ungrateful, ignorant, and worst of all, weak. That is their perception of us. We do not matter to them. We are a resource to be exploited. And then, when they are voted out of nominal power to become enablers of the pretend-opposition once they are elected or cheat their way to power, they spend their time threatening us with their condescending demands for our votes as though they are entitled to our ballots in spite of never having lifted a finger to earn them.
And we suck it all up and beg for more like good little mongrels. We do this every single election cycle. David Frum wrote on twitter that the latest outburst from the White House — Gibbs is simply one of the entire apparatus that feels the exact same way as he demonstrated — simply confirms his theory: that the Republicans fear their base, but the Democrats hate theirs. And it’s true. We must make the Democrats fear us. And there is only one way we can make that happen. We must use the same disciplined electoral ferocity that the far right uses to punish its recalcitrant politicians while rewarding the ones who do what is demanded by the base. We accomplish this by voting Green, Progressive, Socialist, even Communist if that’s what it takes, and we demonstrate beyond the ability of even the eternally blindfolded corporate media chumps to spin election results. Until we on the left MAKE the powerful take notice of us, through our ballots, they will always take us for granted and treat us with scorn and contempt. We must make the bastards cower in fear every time they step so much as an inch out of line.
We stand in support of and with you, Sister. Keep the faith, whatever faith you hold to. We will defeat the pigs.
Send your story to MyBarackObama and see what happens… or send it to the WH or the NYT editorial staff.
Poor medical care, indeed.
I feel very sorry for you and your husband’s situation. The whole thing ought to be blown up in an expose`.
I almost think the stress of dealing with uncaring doctors can make us sicker…I really do. Once the AMA gets ahold of you, they never let go, you’re illness just adds to the GDP.
It didn’t used to be this way. Now, it seems all the doc are right wingers who like to harass their patients.
the days of the good ol’ family doctor are gone….except in some cases and they burn out early, I’ve noticed.
Thank you wavpeac, for taking the time to write this. At the very least, Gibbs and Obama and Emanuel need to be reminded as often as possible that politics may seem like a game, but real lives hang in the balance!
And you, Mr. Obama, are you proud to be the president of a country where jobs are so hard to get that workers are afraid to ask for water while working in 110 degree heat? Dude! More FDR, less Hoover!
I’m working as a farm worker in this economy:( In this economy I’m lucky to have a job let alone a profession. I blog here for Free.
I am so sorry about what you are going through. And I appreciate you going to the trouble to write this diary and tell the world how you feel.
The largest growing enterprise in America taking over retail space is “Space Available”, but as the middle class dies Obama is worried about the feelings of the rich and corporate, and tells the left that they are on drugs, seeing no need to do what he campaigned on because the left has no place else to go.
Not my kind of Democrat.
THANK YOU!
Thank you for mentioning how callous it was to refer to the “professional left” as being drug addicts. I thought the same thing too, how galling it is to use this derogatory accusation against the left, professional, or otherwise, when we just recently had Orrin Hatch refer to those receiving unemployment insurance as also being drug addicts.
I hope that things improve for you and your husband and soon.
Gibbs is saying what most at the White House are thinking. He just isn’t as blunt as Emmanuel.
Part of the Obama legacy is, or will be, the tearing apart of the Democratic Left. We are hopelessly splintered.
On the one hand, you have what I call the authentic left, most of whom supported Barack Obama (often with passion) but now realize he is not the President we thought he would be — not the President he said he would be.
Then you have the dismayed left, who are disappointed at the direction taken by this administration, but they blame it on the people around him, who “won’t let Obama be Obama.” They aren’t yet prepared to admit the truth. Obama is being Obama. The people around him are the people he wants to have around him.
Then you have the subservient left, who cheer the Obama Presidency and talk as though he is establishing a record of greatness.
This splintering on the left is partly due to the intense hope many of us had for this administration coming in. Hope can be a stubborn thing. But is also due to something else. This is something I have observed but not heard or read from anyone else.
Those on the left who now oppose the Obama administration — and those on the left who still support it – are operating with two separate sets of facts.
The authentic left is looking at what this administration is actually doing, the policies they are actually implementing, and – with legislation – what the bill actually says.
The subservient left uses as the basis of their facts what the administration SAYS about what they are doing, what they SAY about their policies, what they SAY about the legislation. Their perception of the Obama Administration is the perception the White House spin machine wants them to have.
So they really believe the President “supports a strong public option” even though he actually opposed it. They believe “32 million” will get insurance from this health care bill even though that is a made-up number used as a White House talking point. They believe that torture, black sites, renditions, NSA spying — etc etc. – have ended just because the White House says so.
And they probably think Obama will actually nominate Elizabeth Warren to run the CFPB. They don’t yet get it. The recent press conference about that was merely the latest substance-free gesture to the left. I can see Emmanual looking to his left and saying,
“Hey! Elizabeth Warren was put on the short list, and the President said lots of nice things about her. What more do you want? Now shut up and get with the program!”
Many on the left don’t yet realize that this administration’s communications apparatus is all about conveying the impressions they want people to have, and creating the perceptions they want people to see. As a result, misinformation and disinformation is mostly what we hear from the White House and the Cabinet.
Once the Democratic Left as a whole realized they have been played – and played by people who have a fundamental disdain for the left – Obama’s only base will be the DLC/Blue Dog types. HIs re-election will probably depend on them.
Thanks, Atabob, for apt description of each of the 3 divisions. I’m just grateful that Type One exists–that it isn’t mostly Type Three and the rest Type Two. “Division” is all we’ve got left to be grateful for. The Obama admin has rendered us virtually pathetic.
Anyway, you are so right, thanks for the post.
Elizabeth Warren for POTUS.
I couldn’t believe it when I saw she had been suggested for a post in the Obama admin. I agree that she will never hold the position she is on a “short list” for. Yeah, it’s for show. Type Two and Type Three democrats will eat it up. Mission accmplshd.
