Southern Californa Occupy protesters had applied for a permit for the Rose Parade, but were not given a permit as a float, but were allowed to walk at the end of the Parade. According to Jack at Liberty Underground, coverage was timed to end just before they, and the Gaint Squid would have come into view. Jack reported:
“Southern California Occupy protesters did a magnificent job of planning for months and gaining so much publicity that their participation was the most anticipated of all the floats and marching groups. In this winter phase of the movement, it is important to let the public know the movement is still alive, and they should be commended for a tremendous effort. But the ruling Forces of Greed would not let the massive national TV audience see that they have been unsuccessful in destroying the movement despite their tear gas and pepper spray, among their greatest fears today. To control the world, the Empire needs to maintain the USA as primarily a military operation with occupy tentacles stretching over a thousand foreign military bases at any cost to American citizens. This can only be done if its people are kept as ignorant as possible and without hope.”
And I goddam wanted you to see it.
The Christian Science Monitor wrote about their plans before parade day; here is an excerpt; (other groups having marched in the past are named in the piece):
“Some say the demonstrators, freshly ousted from tent encampments all over the United States, will drag down the image of one of the most cautious and conservative events in the country. They say that people don’t want real-world politics intruding on a day in which families can put aside mundane cares and simply have fun.
“Once you allow a group like OWS [Occupy Wall Street] into an iconic event like this, you risk changing the entire focus of it for everyone. Where does it stop?” asks David Johnson, an Atlanta-based media analyst. “Will it just become a parade of causes – Planned Parenthood, the tea party, presidential campaigns? I think Americans are tired of politics 24/7.”
But others say inclusion of the protesters will be a refreshing advance toward relevance – and thus more serious audiences – for the parade, which they say is otherwise mostly a feel-good marketing campaign for corporations, chambers of commerce, and civic groups.
“This makes the Rose Parade more relevant,” says Barbara O’Connor, director emeritus of the Institute for the Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento. “This way, they are at least addressing what many of their viewers are feeling.”
For the protesters, she says, inclusion is nothing short of a coup. “With this move, the OWS movement moves from ‘storming’ to ‘norming’ – moving from agitating on the outside to being on the inside of one of America’s most established norms.”

Well; maybe at the back of ‘the inside’, and invisible to teevee viewers, but still: Congratulations Occupy Southern California! You were magnificent!
Happy Iowa Caucus Day; here is an Occupy Iowa Caucuses slideshow via the NYT. ;o)
I’d like to thank these folks for their dedication, creativity and hard work for all of us. We will prevail because there’s no other option. Love one another, and find strength in the community you make with others.

This demonstration does not appear to have been endorsed by Occupy L.A.

Hey wendydavis,
Here’s a link to a slide show at the bottom of a HuffPo article with 59 photos in it :

Morning, Wendy! Thanks for posting this – I hadn’t had a chance to watch it yet. I did read an AP article this morning in the SF Chron with a headline that said “Rose Parade Protest Relatively Peaceful.” As we newspaper geeks know, it was the Chron, not AP who wrote that headline. The story goes on to explain – in so many words – that the protest was in fact COMPLETELY peaceful (unless you count the “get a job” hecklers).
Love love love the “Bail Out the Food Banks” sign – that’s a good one. And the fact that nurses are some of Occupy’s most fervent supporters. Not surprising, since that taking-care-of-each-other thing is the whole point.
In other Forces of Greed news, we discovered this morning that our Green 960 radio station here in the Bay Area has now added Dave Ramsay and Glenn Beck to the morning schedule, although Thom Hartmann, Rhandi Rhodes, Mike Malloy etc. are still on later. I can’t listen to any of them anyway, talk radio tries my patience.
Wendy
Congrats from an activist in Occupy Minnesota.
Hey Wendy,
I didn’t know much about this, too much going on, too little time. I I knew it was happening but none of the details.
BTW, would it be OK if I called you wendydavis? :O
Interesting link WT2.
The next time America claims to have a free press we should sat the American Media is owned by corporations and with its reporting acts as the propaganda creator for the corporations inventing and ignoring news as needed.
The Young, Minorities the Left thankfully watch the news the least.
Well wT2,
The link IS less than flattering for Mr. Thottam. But I haven’t a clue about the current “temperature” in Occupy L.A.’s GA, or the present participation and how it affects “constituent representation” if you will.
I can tell you this much, here in Tucson we have ego and money driven self proclaimed “leaders” striking out on their own absent GA endorsement and spent all of Saturday afternoon in a failed effort to address that one issue…..in the end being unable to bring a resolution or proposal of any sort to the floor for a vote.
Had even that much been possible, I doubt that the required consensus could have been achieved. It was pathetic. IMHO, absent good faith participation by all involved the “direct democracy” paradigm quickly becomes beyond cumbersome.
Perhaps Lisa Derrick will chime in and let us know the insider details on how this now apparently successful event came about; which is also now a “fait accompli”.
Things
As a candidate for US Senate in Minnesota, I have publicly and regularly called the corporate media the tools of the 1% and an enemy of an informed public. Which make them the enemies of democracy itself.
I am running against a Democrat, Senator Amy Klobuchar who makes president Obama look courageous and progressive.
I look forward to watching the media’s reaction as our campaign does very well. Maybe even win!
Hi Robert.
I’m planning to attend an Occupy event next Sunday. It’s a group “way out here in the burbs” that was formed to be a support group for Occupy Boston.
The group has been, in my view, totally dysfunctional. At this point, all they do is hold signs in a local town square. They promised to bring in a facilitator from Occupy Boston for the next meeting so hopefully that will offer some direction.
I’ve always been a fan of direct democracy but only to the extent that it can function effectively. If everyone wants to be heard, they should be heard. Having said that, at some point, I think we need to also put in place some form of representative governance. I couldn’t agree more with your “cumbersome” comment.
Physical occupations are great because they offer “experiential democracy”. But they must be seen warts and all. It is unrealistic to expect, at least in my view, thousands and thousands and eventually millions to “experience” GA’s on a mass scale. So, focusing only on tactics, the question becomes how can Occupy expand its membership?
Overall, I think we need to develop a clear vision of the stages of the Occupy movement. The first phase was an overwhelming success. It’s important not to get too attached to the Phase One model if the movement hopes to grow. This isn’t to say the model has to be tossed aside. Issues like building a clear platform, whether to have leaders, who is authorized to speak to the media, supporting candidates (I hope not!) and more need to be thought through. It will be very interesting to see whether next year’s elections drown out the protests or, instead, give them a mass media stage to compete with the party’s dog-and-pony shows. I think the latter is more likely.
Creative street activity is great; it put our voices on the map. In the long run, though, it won’t be an adequate model for growth.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
Whew; glad Robert fielded that one… ;o)
Thanks, Robert; the ‘The Blood of Jesus Washes Away Our Sins [The Bible]‘ one…was purdy funny in the mix… ;o)
Too much fun altogether!
Thanks for all the news, carol. ‘Robin Hood Was Right.’
There was one youtube about ‘crowds boo protesters’, but it was clearly arranged but the videographer. Fuckkit; you could tell it was his loud mouth and a few of his nearby cohorts and moron friends.
Yeah; the nurses have been early activists on the street even before Occupy; awesome folks, and they work sooo hard for soooo little pay. *And* have to put up with those Doctors. Reminds me of that joke I won’t tell, in case there are any Docs in our midst.
Thom Hartmann seems to be turning into other people from what I read; I confess I’ve never heard him. Here in the sticks, we get the Glenn Beck sort of voices, apparently.
love to you,
w
Hey, Michael. Thanks for stopping by.
Hey, ID; yes. It would be more than fine if you called me wendydavis. It’s mah name heah. They wouldn’t rent me a space between the names, and ah’ve grown accustomed to it. ;o)
I didn’t know anything about it until Liberty Underground came in this mornin’. I dropped by meteor shower one in favor of this; too good to not share. ;o)
For the time being at least, I agree with Jane about Phase 1. A physical Occupation is crucial…..absent that very visible defiance…..the community at large no longer feels “served” by the Occupiers. A physical encampment is a something people drive by and see the protesters out there making sacrifices on their behalf, doing something that they are either unable or unwilling to do for whatever reason. Therefore, the donations flow in to provide sustenance for the movement. Absent the encampment the donations die off.
Whatever is to come in phase II, we must survive until Spring IMO, I spent all weekend prostelytizing Tucson Occupiers to get another encampment up at any cost, even if it has to be on privately owned ground…..as long as it abuts a major thoroughfare.
Then in the Spring, hopefully, we can see these encampments proliferate once again, and even more importantly each grow exponentially in size. From personal experience I can tell you that here in Tucson at least, the dialogue with the City Council would have taken on a whole different tenor had there been 2000 Occupiers in the encampment rather than 100 + 30 homeless.
At present, a minimum of 100,000 families are losing their homes to foreclosure each and every month that goes by, our ranks are growing by that amount at the least, but clearly by much more for many reasons.
So present priorities are :
1.)Maintain a physical encampment.
2.)Survive as a viable entity until Spring.
3.)Continue pursuing federal civil rights violation law suits.
Say it; it can’t said enough. Media conglomeration has been so toxic, but permitted by law. Assholes. They know what they’re doin’, as do the authors and backers of SOPA. Assholes.
Wendy
Here is one for you. From a real live “male” Nurse. True story too. When I enter a patients room, the patient and their family will say “OK Doctor…” I ALWAYS look around, close the door and reply
“NEVER insult a Nurse by calling them Doctor!!!!!”
My patients and family love it.
This story from the front lines was brought to you by

I agree wholeheartedly with your 3-Point Plan, Robert. I won’t go into details, but Occupy Oakland is experiencing the same sort of difficulties. One of today’s discussions revolves around the fact that we apparently had a very limited permit to “vigil” at Oscar Grant Plaza and now the permit has been revoked. Most of us are not happy about the fact that someone got the permit in the first place, especially without clearing it through GA. The city has been, shall we say, less than trustworthy and we chose early on not to negotiate with them for any reason. (Many people disagree with that.) Now we may be facing a weird legal dilemma where it is harder to pursue straightforward civil rights abuses because they can say we violated the permit process or something. It’s a game and they will always win it; best not to play, IMHO.
Wendy
Funny thing. In Minnesota, the corporate media LOVE the Dems. Specifically the Minneapolis Star Tribune, as well as the rest. I also happen to know for a fact they they refuse to publish letters or articles about any anti-corporate candidate. This will be covered in my article/diary on Dean Zimmermann BTW.
It is also true that Democrats and their legions of apologists HATE me. It is a very visceral thing. Some of the very worst are self described “progressive” Democrats in Minnesota.
Having said that, a lot of people are waking up in Minnesota. They know that they have been played by the one money party, masquarading as two parties.
Just to make this REALLY interesting though. Minnesota has a long history of electing non Dems/Repubs.
The most recent is
Governor Jessie Ventura. Democrats and Republican STILL hate him.
I like it, too; Michael Cavlan. Thanks. ;o)
I’ve stayed away from Docs (except for one emergency and unavoidable surgery) for three decades.
Uh…can’t make enough sense outta this to reply; I just woke up and am listenin’ to my favorite wake-up (well, almost any time) song, lettin’ the coffee do it’s magic. Or not. ;oP

Get you positions out here in a diary and be ready for questions is my advice the more questions you answer well at the Lake the more support you will get.
Also if you need help researching positions or issues FDL has tons of articles on lots of topics. Phoniex Woman a regular at FDL is in your state have you contacted her she is writes local politics and can probably introduce you to more firepups in your state.
Tonights Iowa Caucus Vote To Take Place At ‘Secret Location’
Concerns about subversion grow after Republican strategist says GOP establishment will not allow Ron Paul to win

Tonight’s final vote tally for the Iowa caucuses will take place at a secret undisclosed location, an announcement that has stoked fears of vote fraud amongst Ron Paul supporters, concerns that were heightened following a Republican insider’s claim that the GOP establishment will not allow Paul to win.

I wonder if Ron if he loses or heck all the other GOP candidates that lose will sue?
If they don’t then the fix is in and we will know who the fixer is.
Crap sorry wrong thread to many windows open
Look, apparently you have’t noticed, but PW and Cavlan are on pretty much opposite sides of Minnesota politics, and have engaged in…disagreements would be the polite way to say it.
For my money, Cavlan woould better serve his candidacy to get off the boards as a commenter, and get his ass together making another video that shows himself in a better light, and quits engaging in the Ron Paul arguments, all of which, IMO, have totally lost any legitimacy since the black/white, evil/savior, opinion as entertainment factor has become too ascendant.
He needs to consider what is important. And worthy of his attention and energy. So far…he is losing that consideration.
And for the love of gawd, Michael; you’re wasting time on the boards here at my.fdl. If ya want to run a serious campaign, stop this. Now.
