Echoing the hideous history of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency* aiding the Robber Barons at the turn of the last century by infiltrating, spying on, and breaking union strikes by way of intimidation and other thuggery and violence, they are back in the news this week.
Now under the umbrella of Stockholm-based Securitas AB, Bloomberg News is reporting that the group is coordinating with other investigative firms to track protesters plans for the May Day General Strike** and NATO protests in Chicago. The spokesman indicates that they are collecting data through social media and ‘assemblies’, which I take to mean ‘infiltrating Occupy general assemblies’. Some Pinkerton opeds say that in their new incarnation, the Pinkertons are ‘armed with briefcases’ now; as opposed to saps and guns, I assume they’re implying. We’ll see.
In the name of ‘preventing disruptions to business’, director of global risk Brian McNary of Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations apparently told Bloomberg that:
“Banks are preparing for Occupy demonstrations at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Chicago summit on May 20 and 21 by sharing information from video surveillance, robots and officers in buildings, giving “a real-time, 360-degree” view, said McNary, who works on the project.
Elk Versus Wolves
Banks cooperating on surveillance are like elk fending off wolves in Yellowstone National Park, he said. While other animals try in vain to sprint away alone, elk survive attacks by forming a ring together, he said.”
The Bloomberg piece by Max Abelson reminds readers of Jamie Dimon’s in-kind contribution to the NYPD in 2010 of $4.6 million and other examples of the police coordinating with the banks over security, including hundreds of private security cameras monitored in downtown Manhattan.
“Last year’s anti-bank protests were “like a big forest fire that was suppressed and put out,” Chris Swecker, the former head of security at Bank of America, said in an interview. Firms are studying protesters because “there’s also the opportunity for spontaneous fires to spring back up again,” said Swecker, who runs a security-consulting firm in Charlotte, North Carolina.”
The Bloomberg piece has a handy schedule of OccupyNYC events listed. ;o)
In related news, The Partnership for Civil Justice*** has begun receiving some of the documents* they had requested under FOIA in order to discover if local government and local law enforcement agencies were working in a coordinated way with the federal government to suppress and shut down the Occupy Movement. According to Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, Executive Director:
“What these documents are beginning to reveal is also the coordination between law enforcement agencies and private corporate entities representing the 1% that wanted to see the Occupy movement removed from public view and shut out of America’s parks.”
These initially released documents show:
The private corporate entity Brookfield Properties, which manages Zuccotti Park, had its security agency in communication with cities across the country about police actions designed to evict the Occupy movement and sought information as to Park Police plans to evict in D.C. 48 hours before OWS was evicted.
U.S. Park Police were communicating step by step, as they took action in regard to Occupy DC, with the Secret Service, DHS, and other police agencies as well as personnel affiliated with LEO.gov, the FBI’s nationally integrated network and alert system involving all aspects of civilian law enforcement, intelligence agencies and the military. As its website states, “LEO supports the FBI’s ten priorities by providing cost-effective, time-critical national alerts and information sharing to public safety, law enforcement, antiterrorism and intelligence agencies in support of the Global War on Terrorism.”
Park Police officials executed a warrant to search a tent at Occupy DC in McPherson Square based on a “reliable informant” who told them there was a “pistol” present. The most that the police could find was alcohol.
Government officials used the Occupy live stream, circulating the URL for personnel to watch, as they carried out their enforcement actions at McPherson Square.”
As more Rings of Power and Surveillance are Being Forged, Mr. Pinkerton likens theirs to…Elk Defense Rings, and…we’re the Wolves. Let’s act like it, and not disappoint the Pinkertons…the banks and other 1%-ers. ;o)

In unvanquishable number ~
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you ~
Ye are many ~ they are few.”

Scary stuff.
What with the current state of the govt-corporate symbiosis, I see much skullduggery afoot.
I wonder if Pinkerton’s is one of those “security” companies suckling on the cash teat of Obama’s police state security apparatus.
OOOWWHHHOOOOOO OOOWWHHHOOOOOO.
Simply watch them too in real-time 360 degrees.
Thanks Wendy. ‘They’ are way over reacting to May Day celebrations. Realizing that people cannot ‘strike’, this seems like it is being planned as an opportunity to celebrate our unity and solidarity. Thanks for giving us the information we need to know about their negativity. I hope they won’t be too disappointed when they encounter cheerful deer instead of threatening wolves!! Recalling how Putin’s police got upset over a store window’s toy protest made out of leggo people holding tiny, tiny signs, the truth about their corruption and lawlessness are the only things they should fear!
Wendy
Recc’ed of course. You da best.
Oh and keep your eyes on Minnesota. May First shall be interesting, to say the least. Mirac (Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition) are planning to have their largest May Day march and rally yet. Meanwhile, your truly (yup, little old me) shall be speaking at another rally at Loring Park. Also speaking will be Clyde Bellacourt of the American Indian Movement.
Onnwards and ignore the haters and those who smear to protect the dead, rotten corpse of the Minnesota Democratic Party. If ya catch my drift. Grin.
Inn other words my dear. The Pinkerton’s are coordinating but remember.
So are we.
The new “Pinkerton Government Services, Inc.” made me wonder, too, lol!
Sounds as though their intention isn’t to just be hired by private er…firms, doesn’t it? And yet da Wiki says:
“However, since passage of the Anti-Pinkerton Act in 1893, federal law has stated that an “individual employed by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, or similar organization, may not be employed by the Government of the United States or the government of the District of Columbia.”
Not that anyone pays much attention to…you know, actual laws or anything any longer. As Dyan said in ‘Tweeter’, ‘in New Jersey everything is legal if ya don’t get caught’. ;o)
Did ya like Billy Bragg’s ‘Great Leap Forward’? I love it.
And:
Aaaaaooooouuuuwwwhhhhhh! back at ya, homeroid. ;o)
Turn-about IS fair play, eh wot? Thanks, klynn. ;o)
That sounds great, Michael Cavlan. I remember Clyde from the old days. He was central at Wounded Knee, and the fight to protect more traditionals at Pine Ridge from being murdered by Dickie Wilson’s GOON squad. Shoot; wish I could send my regards. Also Ojibwe, Ijust looked it up; I’d forgotten.
I’ll try once more time to invite you to go to my ‘Scintillating’ piece at my Posterous site; someone left you a message there. (I’d rather not put it on your Rocky diary I see is up. (This is the third and last time, but…in the event you don’t see this, I kinda answered the question for ya, extrapolating from things you’d said on the boards here.) ;o)
Kinda hope Clyde’s ditched Russel Means by now; ish. (Sorry, Russell, I think you’re a bit of a media whore.) One Love. ;oP
Welcome, TomThumb. Can’t say how May Day will go over the country; they’re expecting OO to try to shut down the Golden Gate; dunno if the GA there ever signed off on it. I should go look, but that could get messy really quickly without enormous crowds doing it. Chicago? Again, I hope you’re right, but as TarheelDem said, the enormous police, trooper, and Guard presence will make it easier for what he called ‘autonomous actions’.
But I sure hope people do get out in solidarity. It’s Spring, after all. Time to rhumba; conga! ;o)
No, I didn’t remember about Putin and the Leggos. Great story, thank you!
Wendy
What post is that, the one with a message for me? I have no idea which one you mean.
Reckoned the second word ‘scintillating‘ might give it away, ya space case. Sheesh; some peeps. ;o)
Maybe you forgot where my Posterous is; I frequently do.
Another awesome job, wendy…!
It only emboldens me evermore to Occupy and livestream it, this revolution will be televised online…! ;-)
Btw, here’s some great extra-curricular reading, as if ya need any…
Washington Felons Fret Over Hanky-Panky in Cartagena…
Enjoy…! ;-)
Dang it… Washington Felons Fret Over Hanky-Panky in Cartagena…
*heh* I’m doing my part…! Occupy Oceania…
Good-o, Tuttle!
And thanks for fixing the link; I’d clicked it to no avail, then gotten called away from RL (hard to tell the difference some days, sadly). ;o)
Hypocrites extraordinaire! Now, when sex scandals of Sarkozy’s were made public, he went UP in the polls, my friend in Geneva said. LOL!
Put me in mind of the Minerals Management group in Denver photos that showed them snortin’ coke off each other’s bums at what we assume were parties. Pretty classy stuff, eh? Maybe that’s what the public should get riled about: how Low-Rent it all is/was.
Nice to see you, m’dear.
Kewl, Tuttle. ;o)
Far cry from Occupyin’ Mancos, CO, ennit?
Toys Rally Against Fraud: Nano protest in Russia.
Ha!
*heh* Ain’t it tho…? I’m looking forward to tonite’s GA to discuss our recent headline grabber in our local RW rag… Geothermal meeting gets heated… Here’s some of our Livestream of the festivities… Both, Bob and Aurora are active participants in Occupy Hilo…! ;-)
Thank you, TT; how sublime (she grinned).
This looks like fun too, Wendy, Guitarmy:
If anybody is going to be in NYC. Here.
Uh-oh; apparently I know zilch about geo-thermal plant dangers. Geothermal around here isn’t active, I guess, so much as…passive. Eek.
No end to the list of things I dunno about; crikey. Oops; I’ll have to watch the Livestream later it seems. Any Pinkertons around?/s
It’s a lot like ‘fracking’, with the same ‘drilling mud’ used, re-injection of all the toxic vent waste into the ground, increased seismic activity, ad nauseum…! 8-(
Hope it doesn’t rain! It does sound fun; but too bad Tom Morello is at the center. Gadzukes, I wish he could write, play and carry a tune. His heart’s doubtlessly in the right place.
Where are all the movement songs? Not in his camp, imo. I’ve checked out a zillion lists, never found many. Even the Boss’s new ones are kinda Irish-rock-something-or-other. Bugger.
love to you, stay strong,
wd
p.s. I asked a long-ago friend who’s touring with Steve Still about some movement songs; didn’t seem he enjoyed my request. ;o)
;o( sounds about right; didn’t know all that.
I know you may be sick of it, but: cuz I can, and cuz I love it, mahalo.
Awesome, wendydavis.
We are starting to see assumption proven true. Furthermore, we are seeing it being driven from the private corps to the public entities and from the local level (contacted by the 1%’s security agencies) to the feds. This is the reverse of many of the assumptions of the early days of the movement although the assumption of coordination was correct. Now, I suspect that there are a lot of “security consultants” hyping things in order to score lucrative contracts.
Bruddah Iz…! The Hawaiian Superman… May he forever R.I.P…! ;-)
Zounds and Shiver Me Timbers! Is it Tom Joad on the Road stopping by? Isn’t this the post on which I quoted ya? Or was it yesterday’s? If I head a memory, yada, yada…. ;o)
And yessir; so much money to be made over Fear of Those Who Might Be Disruptors of Business, which the dear Molly Ivins always rightly claimed…is the Bidness of America.
Hope you signed up for the Updates…I…as is my wont…forgot to!
love to you on the road, and sorry we didn’t get much money for your quest; we’re a poor lot here, it seems.

In Ukelele Sweet Voice Big Heart Heaven now…really nice tribute. Over in the list, I saw he did ‘Wonderful World’, and I’ll go listen again. But I gotta say, the most poignant version I ever heard was from The Crackhead on the PJ’s, singing while he roasted some pigeon-on-a-stick.
Never know what a life of pain can produce, even in someone’s imagination.
There’s enough to keep going and 30 or so days left. I have some irons in the fire that might prove interesting, but to whet your interest, google “Project for National Security Reform”. The same old folks trying to get ahead of the need for reform in order to preserve the MIC corporate teat. Look at the donors to this organization, the board of directors, and the coalition of advisors. The protectors of the 1%.
Hey, wait a minute! They claim the American Red Cross as contributors, whaddya want?
And under ‘people’, they told the truth:
“The Project’s staff also includes notable figures with
awealth.”Srsy, sigh.
And you know how to contact me if ya get in Dutch financially; we’ll help somehow. Stay safe, THD. And RC is doin’ pretty well, considering. ;o)
I like that they’re scared. A lot.
I was musing about how trustworthy an organization’s intel might be when they want to keep being funded by clients who might need to believe in high threat levels. ;o)
‘Wolves’.
It was bound to happen in some fashion. The documented coordination between police and private corporations is even more unsettling to me than the rebirth of Pinkerton … hell, at least it ain’t Blackwater, eh?
Sooner or later, people need to start moving their communications from public social networking sites that can be indexed using damn webbots – with plans delivered to someone’s desk as a ready-made suppressive action report. A big reason Twitter worked so well in Egypt is because nobody in Egyptian authority was monitoring it … if Mubarak had *known* in advance when and where protests were going to happen, they NEVER would have reached critical mass required for success.
Ultimately, it seems pretty difficult to challenge the powers that be if all your sneaky plans are maintained on hard drives financed by them – and literally owned as their business records.
And also, too. Anyone seriously involved in the movement should ditch the iPhone, get an Android device and root that fucker to get rid of the carrier-added spyware that ALL phones have some version of when shipped stock (by running something like Cyanogen).
It wasn’t my intention to say Pinkertons are so scary, but their place in the history of quashing socio-political movements for the 1% is now briefcase rather than sap.
Your knowledge of ways around snooping deserves a diary or two; up for it? Can I help? It’s info like that that’s going to aid the democracy movement.
I included this (or one of the other segments) in a recent diary. It’s Jacob Applebaum of Tor creating anonymity online; you may know all about it already, it’s Greek to me. But your vast tech knowledge could be really helpful if we could figure out how to get it to Occupys everywhere.
Wish Seaton had clipped your conversations with him on his ‘More Reasons’ diary for his of today, rather than mine. You were pretty brilliant, even if I am pissed at you. ;o)
Actually, I do kind of find the Pinkertons scary (the fuckers kept the bulk of the population in my region in bull-pens for over a year to break our Union miners … among other things). Not too pleased to see them getting back into the business, honestly.
Heh. I’ve tried and failed at that twice now … it’s a surprisingly difficult topic to present. But, yeah, info security needs to become a part of the discussion somehow.
Seaton refuses to acknowledge my existence … for whatever reason ;-). That’s been consistent for quite some time. He’s like MJ Rosenberg’s crackpotty and slightly senile old uncle or something … so I usually avoid his posts in the best of times (that is to say, in my current situation, I didn’t go there with his latest post; enough time wasted on Seaton for the month, IMO.). He only sucked me in because I was shocked to see that he’s reborn and shilling for Obama now … which to me is as notable as when Dan K got over being so scared of the Tea Party folks in Occupy (to an extent).
Arrgg; there are a few anti-AIPAC, anti-Zionist diarists here who love MJ: I’ve stopped objecting, honestly. And he has done a couple pieces for AlJazeera that were okay enough…
Seaton always ignored me at TPM; i called him on it as a misogynist once, and a small bevy of women chimed in with ‘ayes’; he…deflected my contention, no surprise.
Don’t think the Pinkertons were ever out of business, but have changed alliances and tactics. Hell of reach they have, in any event. I think, but can’t find with easy googling, that a subset of them were at the Port of Longview wildcat strike. I remember trading emails with RAD over the implications, or similarities.
But thanks for coming to his newest diary; it was supremely fun to read your comments. What.a.tool. Papa Hemingway wanna be is it. ;o)
