It’s framed like that all over, in newspapers and online, and it’s making smoke come out of my ears. Guess who else a meager 69,000 ‘new jobs’ is ‘bad for’??? Grrrrrrrrrr…….
It’s bad for the unemployed, underemployed and ‘discouraged workers’; some estimate the Alternate Unemployment 22% figure (Williams explains his reasoning) as translating to as high as fifty million or even more, not the low-balled, massaged post-1994 reckoning 8.2% statistic the BLS gives out.
It’s bad for the 46 million Americans living in poverty, meaning a family of four has to earn less than $22,314 and an individual has to make less than $11,139, or about $30 per day.
It’s bad for the one-in-seven Americans receiving food stamp assistance (about $200 per month), and far worse for those of us going hungry, but not receiving aid.
It’s seriously hard for Americans who are too poor to get medical help, and are forced to wait until their conditions turned into emergencies or death sentences. An estimated 55,000 of us died last year from lack of access to health care; how many will die this year?
It’s hideous for the unemployed parents of children who often suffer depression, permanent anxiety or simmering anger mixed with feelings of failure due to their inability to provide for their families.
It’s bad for the additional hundreds of thousands of Americans who are estimated to face foreclosure in 2012.
It’s hard for the folks who run food pantries and food banks in cities and towns across the country whose shelves are empty, and whose kettles are full of Stone Soup.
It’s even hard for the virtually self-employed, whose livings are often very dependent on those using their services having some disposable income to give them work, and who pay all their own SS taxes anyway. (No breaks for the small-time entrepreneurs this country loves so well.)
It’s bad for graduates owning portions of an aggregate one trillion dollars of college debt, none of which burden is nullified by going into bankruptcy.
It’s bad for the 200,000+ public sector employees (h/t: ubetchaiam) downsized last year, with more on the way as ‘austerity’ budgets take effect.
It will be seriously bad for those long-term unemployed whose benefits are about to run out, while at the same time the public and hidden military budgets amount to close to a trillion dollars.
And it’s probably even bad for the folks taking jobs in the sector that was responsible for adding half of those 69,000 jobs: health care, many of which are likely over-worked, underpaid nurses and nurses’ aids.
Ach; we can afford new aircraft carriers that will head to the Pacific, you know, to show China we mean to rule the world, and probably to add some muscle toward ‘defending’ our soon-to-be new PPT signatory nation allies, but at least Obama and the Dems will fight to not let the Republicans cut the food stamp budget. They are on the case, and I am thrilled!
Yeah; but the big story is that those numbers are ‘hard on Obama’ and his re-election chances. And the other one is the prevalent opinion that The Ben Bernank will goose another QE soon, even as Pimco’s Bond-King Mohammed El Erian says:
“So there are consequences and I think the Fed at the end of the day will probably go along with QE3, but the benefits will be small in relative to the costs and the risks,” adds El-Erian. (RT video here.)
And last but not least, please understand that I am furious that most of this suffering was avoidable, so I’m giving you this gloomiest-ever slideshow showing one man’s opinion about how bad economic conditions are. When even Business Insider calls it the darkest scenario they’ve ever seen, you know to take some of it with a grain of salt, but this is former GLG Global Macro hedge-funder Raoul Pal’s “The End Game”.
We need to do all we can in our communities to help our brothers and sisters withstand the leanest and meanest of times that are on the way. Love and share with all those you can, find local solutions as you collectively can. And Occupy Everywhere, and talk to folks, and listen to them and their concerns.
Take yer pick: poignantly pissed off or defiantly outraged and confident (and fuck all fascists, by the by):

Obama’s fate is all that matters. Get with the program, or you might be dealt with at any time–the next time you hear buzzing, it might not be a rattlesnake. Rec’d, cuz the Diary Listing looks naked without your name on it. ;-)
Amen. Recc’d. You said it so well I have nothing to add.
I’m sure that Obama will forgive me if I’m not concerned about how this effects his re-election campaign. I can only think of the terror that families must be feeling about their chances of survival. What do you do when the cupboard is bare?
Recced and if I could I’d recc it twice
Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…….
Wot? Rec’d on accountta List Nakedidity? Sheesh, rc! Don’t they call that ‘damning by faint praise’???
(luv ya, of course.) ;o)
Hell, I’d been thinking folks might add more ‘bad for’s'; I know I left our some in my er…rage.
Went to bed pissed, woke up pissed, and I’m glad it didn’t go away in the night. And I already have a post for tomorrow ready, and it’s pretty cranky, as well. Grrrrrrrr.
Thanks for reading, Barbarian; love to T and the kids.
Well said! You have exactly identified one reason for my frustration with Obots – that everything is about Obama being happy.
I think ya die a little inside, Twain, and maybe a lot if your kids are hungry or sick.
I got food stamps once out of dire necessity, and it was a sincerely humiliating experience. There is WIC, but how many families don’t even know? Welfare to work: wow, what a failure that was.
Thanks for being so empathetic.
And a new U.S. built, military base in Chile too.
Thanks, firebagger. Stay pissed and strong.
Oh, wendydavis, I feel you. Thanks for making this list. I didn’t look at The End Game yet but I am sure I will make myself do it at some point. In the meantime, I will be buoyed by all the fun Barry and Dubya and their better halves were having the other day up at the White House, giddy as all get-out over Dubya’s new portrait. Mr. HFC thinks Dubya’s been sneaking some more of Poppy’s halcyon since he doesn’t have to be quite as sharp these days. Anyway, doesn’t that take away just a few of the hunger pangs, knowing that the Ds and the Rs can always set aside their differences and celebrate their samenesses, like all good war criminal presidents?
Great Diary! Recommended !!!
So many times I have people spouting unemployment rates at me and I have to interrupt them and remind them those #’s come from only the people who qualify for benefits, but what about those who don’t qualify any more? Do those people somehow automatically find employment? No, They don’t and then they lose everything…many times it is house, car, health, family…Tragically, the list just keeps growing.
Learn how to grow your own food and teach others to do the same. It won’t fix the problem, but at least you can eat. Yep, things are pretty grim….
I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment, wendy. It is loathsome that jobs numbers are contextualized by Obama’s delicate feelings or electoral chances when so many people are *actually* suffering.
I bet Bernanke won’t be doing any easing of monetary policy – other than to bail out any bank that goes insolvent because of Europe – anytime before the election. He’ll do what Greenspan did in 2000: fuck the Democrats, and then advocate for massive long-term fiscal and monetary stimulus as soon as the Republicans are in power.
The one upside to a shitty situation…
And where in the U.S. media do you see this being headlined?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/may/31/public-sector-cuts-us-economy?CMP=twt_fd
And the thing about it is that it’s NOT the Federal workforce but States and local governments.
Why both with F*ck ? Just write Fark !
It really wasn’t limited to Bots; it was conventional electoral horseshit framing, as if the numbers mattered, and not people’s lives. Sick stuff.
Funny on the halcyon; can I get some? Welcome on the list, but there are more categories, more hideous pain.
Gotta scoot, love to you, girl,
wd
Ain’t that grand, Tom Thumb? Another MICC jobs program!
Obama dissed all peace activists, present and past, when he reinvented and republished the lie of the “spat upon Vietnam Vets” this week. He’s lied to protect the one percent of Wall Street and now he has lied about the past to crush the present voices of dissent: Here.
Obama’s own ‘words’ are bad for peace activists.
Knock it off!!! Everybody knows I am your devoted slave lol.
Oh, thanks. I feel much better now. :-( ((hfc))
And since you have a devoted readership and I doubt you read the news roundup every day, here are some snippets that might be of interest.
How many hours at minimum wage you’d have to work in order to afford a 2-bedroom apartment, state by state. Note that those who would push “well ,get a roommate” can’t say anything when even two minimum wage workers can’t afford a two bedroom apartment.(Of course bunk bed makers are thrilled by the chart) And I really like the website where the chart is at: http://wepartypatriots.com
Everything you buy is controlled by ten corporations. Go here to learn who they are.
For those who might be put off by the alternet warning about having to read French, here is the graph full size
So glad to hear that you push back, 1Freerein; and yes, we grow a bit of food, and would more if we could. Used to grow huuuuge gardens, and freeze and can lots of it, and the fruit from our trees. Still preserve food, but nothing like the 700 qts. I used to do every year. ;o) (We live in a Mormon valley; it’s catching, lol!)
Happy to hear you’re on the same page, snapdragon; it’s just so wrong. But then if they had hearts, they might investigate what this means to actual people, including our sick foreign evil deeds around the planet.
You may be right, Obey; I’d just seen quotes saying he would either do QE III or another Let’s Twist Again from area Fed-Heads all over the financial pages…all that might be sorta confidence-fairy stuff, who knows?
Bugger; I’d stuck your Guardian onto my word.doc, and used the numbers above, but forgot to link it and give ya a hat tip. Fixed it, and I apologized. It’s at the ‘It’s bad for the 200,000+ public sector, tra la la…’ sentence.
I’m kinda partial to the ‘F*ck’; the mods told me I could use it, and I do like a good, well-placed asterisk. ;o) ‘Fook’ is okay, too, lol.
Holy sheepshit! Their big idea is &*#$&!(* another round of forced inflation?
Who the hell is that going to help? It can’t even be helping the bankers (or at least certainly not the banks) by now. I dunno, maybe he thinks the CEO crowd will shower him with campaign cash or something? That sure would be in line with the obvious view within all of establishmentville that indeed everything is about the reelection of Obama.
IMO, clear moral failures aside, I think Obama’s biggest problem is that he simply can’t vet staff. He delegates; but that still requires the ability to vet those to whom he delegates the power of vetting. It really seems his entire economics team is working to ensure he loses (along with the rest of us). Even if QE3 results in jobs at some point down the road(LOLOLOL), that certainly won’t come before a spike in basic prices for everything – just like last time. What, right at the convention? Feeding right into the protest drama and inevitable NC “hospitality” for the protesters. Knowing that as far as Obama’s administration goes, every decision really *IS* about his reelection … dunno. Breathtaking.
That particular horseshit came into my Inbox a couple days ago, and included his calling Viet Nam ‘one of our longest wars’, not mentioning the ten and counting (until 2024?) of Afghanistan, thanks to his love for MICC profiteers. What calumny.
That’s “Knock it off Massa to you dear. ;o)
Silly, of course I read around the web every day. ;o)
But I will enjoy reading your links; they don’t look a bit familiar, and thank you.
I believe that the current message from both democrats and republicans is: if families run out of bread, they should just resort to eating cake instead.
I don’t see how they’re going to create inflation – i.e. a price hike in commodities – with the whole world economy in the shitter. One thing they could do is try to bring the dollar back down, which might give us 0.5% of growth thru exports and import substitution. But it would take a lot of firepower, more than they’re willing to commit, I’m guessing…
I haven’t seen anything. Apart from people *begging* them to do something, and casting their pleas in the form of forecasts. But do you have any links…? I’m probably wrong.
Given what’s happening with the Yuan, exports from the U.s. and Euroland don’t have much chance of rising.
So you are saying that because things are so much shittier now that it would have a different impact than it did last time? Because it sure as hell raised prices on stuff last time.
China doesn’t matter much as an export destination, if that’s what you were thinking…?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_largest_trading_partners_of_the_United_States
Oopsie; time to go down to town and Occupy Mancos!
See ya after a bit; glad to know there’s plenty of anger here. Keep it up!
Yes. China was eating up commodities last time.
Looks lie y’all are sorting through this downstream. ;o)
You may be right, but it was more ‘heavily anticipating’ experts, like analysts at the big five banks. And Rosengren in Boston, and a couple others he mentions here. I watched a few videos saying the same thing. The theme was that the Bernank won’t want it to seem that monetary policy has nothing to offer.
I’ll bet you
the usual twenty thousand dollarsa dollar ninety-nine that Bernank won’t do anything until at least after the summer. (that way it won’t have any effect until after the election). My point is just that partisan interest is a much better indicator than economic conditions. Much as with with the Supreme Court partisan interests are a better predictor than judicial principles. Eg. it’s funny how QE2 was implemented just after the mid-terms…
The US poverty rate is scandalous, matching or exceeding the rate in the 1960′s before the Great Society programs kicked in; absolute numbers in poverty are well above 50 million and growing. Half of all Americans are essentially one paycheck away from the poorhouse.
Our Rulers think this is just fine and have done everything in their power to ensure that nothing is done to reverse it.
What’s been striking all along is the complete indifference of the Ruling Class to the increasingly dire plight of the impoverished masses. The languid indifference in DC is being outmatched by the unbridled cruelty of Mme Christine LaGarde of the IMF — who pays no income taxes — scolding the Greeks for their tax avoidance.
These are monsters.
Shoot, Obey; I won’t bet. One reason is that I didn’t even remember that QEII was after the midterms… Will he just mumble his usual incoherent cyphers when he testifies to Congress on the 7th? I swear he tries so hard to be inscrutable. I do remember a few times some of the more theatrical Congress-critters yelled at him to ‘answer the fucking question!’, lol.
Last night I dreamed that I checked the reader’s diaries list here and you had up a post named simply, ‘Like’. I spent some time wondering what it might be about…
Also, I had a long email from Q’s M. a couple days ago; she’s a peach, and says that things are going pretty well, given everything. (I’d sent her a tiff of that giant Tiger swallowtail I put up the other day.) She’s wild for da birds, butterflies and flowers as I am. So wish I could hear her voice; I think I’d love it. ;o)
Oh… partisan indicator except for Elena Kagan. ;o(
LaGarde’s face fair’ gives me the shivers, ChePasa. And I’d swear she was one of the MOTUs who had sent out alarms at the same time (a year ago?) Zbig did that nations were creating the historical conditions that brought revolutions.
It will be pretty interesting to see how the Greek elections go; it sounds as though Syriza’s platform is pretty damned radical, almost designed to make some stark contrasts for voters to choose between.
Occupying Mancos today a self-professed ‘very well-informed’ Dem posh gallery owner came over and spoke with us, and it was surprising how Very Afraid of Romney he was. We countered his arguments, and while his face registered bafflement, I’m sure he’ll still think he’s LOTE-voting for OBomba when he fills in his little circle on his ballot.
But in general, damn; the positive responses we get just keep growing and growing. It’s so heartening.
wendaaaay, I’ve been droned at the book salon and at chris hayes’s up, and done missed the bombardier’s targeting the O’Bwonbama! dang it.
Drones is gonna be the jobs solution, high pay manufacturing solution to the economy, can’t outsource secret components can we? O” Shit,.. MIC again. How come, like food, the best paying jobs that taste the best, ain’t good for us?
YOU got todo a Drone piece WD, there are so damn many side issues, civil rights, cheap war; Bomer’s done declared Drone war everywhere anybody he don’t like, talk about a shit list!, bodybags for nuthin’ and the pics for free.
They aughta start playing Wagner like in Apocalypse to let ‘em know were watching, a lullaby instead of the incessant engine noise! Thats psych warfare, drive those muslims to drinkin! that how we can convert’m to good ol’ christians.
Darlin… when ya gonna start putting some of your Occupy on Youtube. You’d be viral before you know it,…Kony 2012, meet WD40 from Mancos!
It’s strange to watch Obama’s reaction to the unravelling of his so-called ‘recovery’. By Nate Silver’s model, he is now down to 25% chance of reelection unless the economy magically picks up (and unless it gets even worse). And his campaign decided the right move was to commission that NYT piece on him as a brave one-man drone-assassin, unshackled by law, alone with his conscience and his campaign manager…
The very idea of tacking left, offering solutions to the obvious hardships of ordinary Americans, seems totally anathema to the guy. Tool.
Thanks for the news. Hope all is well with Q&M!
As for your dream – you obviously are quite enamored of my oh-so-awesome posts. Yes?
Keep being busy with stuff and forgot to mention this to you:
Heard about the upcoming lunar eclipse?
herrrrrrmiiiit, hello. My stars, I had reckoned that I’d likely shown for years than I’m seriously obsessed by drones, and have written on the horrors and evils of robotic wars since the Cafe days; several years at least. I actually did find my Cafe archive, which had been imported to another site that I was subsequently pretty much banned from returning to unless…tra la la.. (no, thank you)…but flipping through the pages, I found an update to an earlier one, hit the link to it, and…got taken to a current TPM page. Sorry; can’t do it again.
But lately, my diaries have tended to personalize the horrors, what one sounds like, the lives of the murdered, the family pain, the recruiting tools they are for those who will hate us in perpetuity. To give face and life to the victims, IOW, even though it has to be a bit fictionalized on my part (and for some I’ve researched to discover what might be so in their lives, their village governments, their languages and customs, etc.)
Here’s one whose title I could remember; try not to mind Seaton, he was a bit deranged on the comment thread… lol.
But beyond giving the victims life, it’s hard to know what I might write that would make a case for the evil they are.
I did talk to the gallery owner about OBomba declaring his right to assassinate anyone, anywhere, even on American soil he wished to without trial, or anything resembling ‘due process’, which is not a concept that alleged Constitutional scholar seems to even consider. Fucked up as all giddy-up.
So anyway, the book salon was not a high priority for me, I guess, but I’m glad you attended, and hope it was good. Medea is pretty damned cool.
Oh, and this wasn’t an anti-OBomba post, as much as an indictment of the entire political class, punditry, etc. If he came into it, it was only because he’s another asshole politician who helped create this hell we are living in needlessly. IMO, of course. ;o)
“I’d likely shown for years than I’m seriously obsessed by drones” got me thinking of the definition for drone so here it is:
“n.
1.A male bee, especially a honeybee, that is characteristically stingless, performs no work, and produces no honey. Its only function is to mate with the queen bee.
2. An idle person who lives off others; a loafer.
3. A person who does tedious or menial work; a drudge: “undervalued drones who labored in obscurity” (Caroline Bates).
4. A pilotless aircraft operated by remote control.
Could it be that Obama ,as an example of definition 1, uses definition 4 because he himself is stingless?
It might be Zombie-viral, hermit, lol! That I photograph poorly is an understatement, mebbe it’s a ‘don’t steal mu soul’ thing, but even so…
And there’s the thing with my mouth. Mr. wendydavis says I’ve developed an evil laugh, and today…I used the term ‘asshole’ rather more loudly than I’d meant to, when describing our sole detractor, in answer to an erstwhile female friend who’d asked ‘if we get get any support for what we were doing’. And I was laughing about the chairman of the county Republicans who walked into the center of the intersection of (yes, indeed) Main and Grand to show us his disapproval with two sweeping, full-body thumbs-down gestures.
Now the gesture was so emphatic that it almost tipped his belly over his giant tribal bumper-sticker of a belt buckle, and he likely would have gone ass-over-tea-kettle were not for the points of his cowboy boots. I thanked him profusely for his support and manners, and tried a crutch-curtsy (not an easy maneuver)…and wondered about Arrested Development a bit more. I have garnered a certain amount of detractors over the decades in this small town, and more than a dozen times have been called a ‘lightning rod’, which appellation I seriously resent, of course.
I’m just a good citizen exercising my rights and wisdom in any and all venues that came before me as needing a bit of light and improvement, you see…. ;o)
Anyhoo, ‘asshole’ came floating out of my mouth before I had the sense to STFU. ;o)
Wendy; thanks for posting this. I was going to write some letters to the editors about the very same thing.
I can’t believe how the news media packages this stuff.
If the media would do as many stories about the people who are actually hurting this mess would be cleaned up real fast and Obama and this whole bunch of politicians would be thrown out of office.
The Main Stream Media has been packaging the news this way ever since I can remember— it is always about some politician’s being hurt with their standing in the polls and never about the people dying in these dirty wars or forced to live in poverty.
Again; thanks for setting the record straight.
Ha! I’d seen a link to Nate’s prediction, didn’t click into it. 25% *unless*…er…so unlikely that I’d think the distraction of War might be more likely. Fuck. Is Nate Still callin’ ‘em well? Hadn’t kept up as well since he went to the Times or wherever, I guess…
Shoot, I wish I could find the source, but Jack’s Liberty Underground News had a cartoon with Romney and OBomba with d*cks as missiles comin’ outta their trousers, with ‘Mine’s Bigger’ and ‘Mine’s Longer’ speech bubbles. Juuust about right. Twin Tools, Similar Testosterone-Pretenders? Or for real? Nightmarish.
More later; gotta go make some dinner, someone here is hungry…on accountta he does lots of the work here I used to do…lol!
Dang girl, I was in a good drone mood till I seen your slide show. I haven’t planted a garden in years but I got a hoe,… one w/ a wood handle, Ha.
But srsly, I’m country, can live off the land, etc. but if we do break though those bottoms the computer sell everything algorithms go out of control and there might not be a Keynes parachute big enough. Yano, 70trillion sounds big don’t it. We need to get Obey, and Ubetcha to recommend to us FDL pups how to get thru the money problem; after the mason jar stash runs out. heh, heh. Better yet, get about 10 or so long threads published and call it the “Depressions for Dummies”, take our royalties in gold, please! Ha
The “big reset” Pal calls it; reckon thats what the Mayan calendar was warnin’ about? Ha, but tell Mr WD to get that ol gun out; he may not have touched it in years, clean and oil it and buy some extra ammo. I’m an ol’ boy scout that still believes in “just in case.”
I know your hearts a pacifist an all but, heck ya’ll are in the sticks, it would be awhile b4 the fan threw it that far. Heck, I need to clean mine anyway too since you reminded me.
Yep. I am confronted by this on a daily basis.
Recommended. Tweeted. Liked.
And now that I’ve weighed in on your headline, I’m headed for the diary itself. :)
It seems ironic that you never asked if I read the ‘Like’ diary, Pug, lol! But…I’m sure it was a glorious diary.
But it seems almost silly to say that you remain one of my favorite blogger/diarists AND virtual friends of all time. And as I said on another post of mine, ‘even when ya kick my ass to Kingdom Come’, or something close.
That said, get some sleep darlin’ dear; it’s waaaay late in Sweezerland, and also: don’t be embarrassed when I say that you’re one of the finest people I’ve ever virtually known, Saudi Princes/banker’s daughters notwithstanding. ;o)
And: As Home is but a memory now, I am glad you’ve shown up here.
Sleep well; our National Guard is awake, and the NSA is protecting us…or is it the other guys they’re protecting from us? I allus ferget…
Tariq Aziz. Five star stuff wendy.
You used a whole different access point that doesn’t get used enough anymore, cept maybe at church, or a funeral. We regular thinking folks usually can detect someone using the side door to our emotions, but your plain sneeeky good at it.
David S., don’t have a clue about side door, he does front door news and opinion stuff and is good, but… he’s a photographer. Click, there it is. You paint; letting our imagination finish your feelings in our own unique way with our own sensitivities, makes for a more meaningful experience with prose. Whitman does it like that.
It would be neat if FDL had a “best of” archive for us new pups to get to know what yu ol’ dogs been doin over the years.
Great post.
‘Strawberry moon’; can anything be more romantic than that or the special circumstances of a ‘Blue Moon’?
Jayzus, ubetcha; thank you; we’ll be watchin’ for it, though the transit Venus will be tough to see. We have almost no light pollution here, and stargazing is one one of things that keeps us…moderately sane with the vast perspective it offers.
It’s such a lovely thing to greet the constellations seasonally, and grasp that even though all time may happen at once, but in different dimensions, there are seasons that turn…and turn. All my best love to you, dear, and for turning me on to things I miss.
LOL! Love that framing, ubetcha. How embarrassed would it be if that became a known, even speculated quality of his? ;o)

Welcome, Alan Maki; I was obviously seriously enraged by the lack of humanity it all portrayed.
MSN: Part of the Industrial/Military/Congressional/News-o-tainment Complex. Could we have ever imagined the blurred lines three decades ago? Remember when Mother Jones did serious investigative journalism?
My stars; some days it’s hard to grok the enormity of The Machine, even though we must have been collectively so asleep we allowed it to devolve to this extent. And imagine: Dwight D. gave us ample warning. Ay yi yi…
Did some hoein’ yesterday, though our smaller current gardens rarely call for it; a cool tool, as is a scythe, which was seriously hard work to use for very long. ;o) We have a gun, but only for emergencies such as putting deer who’ve been hit by cars or have gotten caught in fences and are dying out of their miseries. Used to have nightmares I’d be comin’ home from work at night and have to use my Swiss army knife instead.
I’d like to think one of us might shoot a deer or an elk if we were hungry enough, but…in 2008 I started stocking up with 25# bags of lentils, beans, dried peas, seeds, and other dried foods to get us through the lean times, and hopefully share with others.
We tithe food instead of money, and it works for us. ‘Keep stuff moving out’ is the hippie dictum, and ‘you’ll always have plenty’ is the intended karmic result. Seems to be so. ;o)
hallo, At; nice to see you. I hope all is well with you and your family, and hope you liked the video. Haven’t put it up, but I’m glad I got to give it to someone who’d appreciate it. We will need to put those ‘reclaiming the desert’ methods into practice very seriously soon.
New Mexico is starting on fire already (the Gila Forest), and here it’s dry dry dry.
Now that rec’ing on spec is a dangerous practice, Anthony Noel! ;o)
So glad you felt it, hermit. Personal stories often ARE political narratives, I think, even fictionalized ones. I was baffled by a few folks seeming outrages that I’d needed to do it that way.
Sleep well, dear. I’m almost 4 bed. ;o)
;o) Thanks for reading, econobuzz.
Nice memory; thank you. And for you.
Sleep well, may Morpheus be kind to you.
Goodnight all; stay strong and healthy and as loving as you can.
excellent post – and thread
I am seeing a media concerned with a horse race – and nothing else.
Tom, thank you so much for the Sirota piece. The comments there were amazing and brought several tears to my eyes. As one whose birthday occasionally falls on Memorial Day (as it did this year), it is repulsive to see what should be a remembrance of lives lost to the cruelty of war turned into a celebration of slaughter, led by a president who gladly repeats the Rambo lie: “Waaah! I didn’t get a pawade!! Daddy got a pawade, why can’t I get a pawade!! It’s not fair! Waaaaahhhhhhh!!!”
It’s sickening to think that I’m partially responsible for that slimebag’s murders, having worked for his election. And it’s depressing to think that I’ll probably have to kill myself before I get to see Obama torn limb-from-limb by a justly-enraged mob. (Non-fatally, of course! Death penalty bad! Save Obama’s limbless trunk!) Ah, well.
Wendy, thanks so much for the diary. As you probably know, those of us unemployed here in California lost our EB eligibility at the start of May, because unemployment is down to “only” “10.9%” in the state. Yes, we haven’t gotten worse than the worst, so back to work, slackers! Those non-existent job openings won’t fill themselves, you know!
Naturally, whenever I think about the economic situation, I am most concerned about what it means to Obama’s re-election prospects. After all, St. Barry the Helpless is all that stands between us and the Forces of Darkness, don’t you know?
(Of course, the reason he stands between us and the Forces is because he’s holding the door open for them, pointing us out to them, and going “sic ‘em, Forces!”. But still.)
Thank you. That’s what I was feeling too.
Handicapping; yep. Grrrrrrrrr.
Welcome, Socialist; I thought the date for the EB benefits to end was June, though, and for several other states as well. They are crazy, and when you think a dollar of UI returns $1.35, it’s even more insane.
This chart at zerohedge is so bleak; it’s comparing employment to the general population since 1984. Ordinarily it’s compared to the size of the labor force, but that number may have acquired tweaks over time like the U3 did.
‘…Opened the door’ at the very least. I can barely contain myself when OBomba’s loyal defenders claim he was hamstrung by…well, you know the drill. A man told us that yesterday while we were Occupying.
Welcome, kall; it’s heartening that so many of us saw it for what it was. I have some of the same feelings when our citizenry is called ‘consumers’, which is telling the truth about our purported function in the financial machine. Grrrrr.
(psst. Wendy. Sorry to go OT here. But could you tell me how to insert pictures in a blog? I’ve tried it before and they get deleted, presumably by management. I’m sure for quite good reasons, but I don’t know why. Or maybe I’m doing it wrong. I was thinking of inserting a chart I’d made – I.e. uploading it directly – and the blog really don’t work without it… Got any advice?)
Goodness, don’t worry about OT, Pug.
Do you have a flickr account? All images have to be funneled thru it or photobucket. It seems that those sites may have stronger safety features against hacking, or at least that’s what Brian or Kit said when I asked.
Anyhoo, like with my photos and Freda’s art (which permission to use I sent to My.fdl mods), I upload them, then grab the html code to lay into the diary. I’m trying to think if you don’t have an account, how you might send it to me, I could upload it, then you could access it and grab the code.
I’m still a little unclear if the images can be Private, or need to be marked as Anyone Can See, and I was about to try a Private one to check it out.
I’ll come back soon and see what you think. Have you already read the section on which image sources can be used?
Is the chart a jpeg image? Never made a chart. ;o)
flickr. Got it. I’ll sign up. Thank you ma’am.
Yes, should be a jpeg. I think. Some of these programs have a default file-type…
LOL! Er…uh…yes. Or you could get an account; so logical! I think it seemed monumentally hard to make one when I did it, so I passed over the fact you could create one. When ya figure out how it works, lemme know. I couldn’t even tell if I could give you a link to my photostream, lol!
I just remembered why getting an account was so hard: it was apparently due to the crap version of IE I have; now when I upload, I do it through Firefox, and it actually works.
Gah. between skitch for android on my phone, Evernote capture and Flickr and the Bureau of Labor stats, it’s all gone tits up. Oh well, thanks for the help. Will try another time…
Terrific post, Wendy. Now we have new ground to conquer as the effects of the Chinese downturn and the developing EU depression stimulate a free for all tumble of the North American economy.
My granma owned a small restaurant in Victor, a Colorado mining town, and went broke in 1936 trying feed out of work miners and then had to work as a kitchen servant for some rich people in Denver. She never again had a shred of faith in the ‘American Dream’ and tens of millions are now coming to the to the same conclusion in the biggest and deepest radicalization since the thirties. That development will give the left an opening to push for real change, and it won’t have anything to do with elections. Elections have been essentially closed to anyone but the rich by laws, beginning with the Electoral College, and a huge number of restrictive ballot laws. I expect our radicalization will bypass all the ‘reform’ bs and move directly towards the fight, based on mass actions, for the creation of a workers government.
Before and after November 6th build unions, the union left, the Occupiers movements and on November 6th vote socialist, write in Brad Manning or just stay home as a sign of our utter contempt for Obama, the Lap Dog in Chief, the Warmonger in Chief and the Bigot in Chief and for the his wannabe opponent as Lap Dog in Chief, Warmonger in Chief and Bigot in Chief, Romney.
Wish you could stop speaking in the original Klingon, but does all that mean you could send me the chart jpeg to upload to mine, and I’d give ya the code?
If not, I’m sorry you can’t pull it off, darlin’.
Sorry for the tech-jargon. So for clarification, “tits up”, I now see, might be taken to suggest something good.
Wonderful, even.
But, alas, it means there was some kind of malfunction between the various bits of software involved in annotating the chart I was working with. So no chart. no blog. Gotta figure it out when I have more time.
‘Tits up’ was the only portion I did understand, lol. But I see now that it was making the chart itself work; bummer.
Wendy, you’ll like this 4 hour BBC documentary if you haven’t already seen it. American culture used to be very, very different.
Century of The Self. Episode One: Happiness Machines

Note the ethnicity/religion of most all of the psychologists/bankers/media barons who executed this psy-op so successfully.
Does look like a global trainwreck coming.
Had to google Victor; it’s up by Cripple Creek. Interesting framing of you mother’s harsh life’s gaining her that perspective, Bill.
I share your perspective on electoral politics being useless now, reform impossible. But I do imagine that as the economic shit hits more fans, it won’t be just the left, but all who sense/know how rigged against them the system is, and how crucial it is to cast of the shackles of rule by corporate oligarchs, that it won’t be just a Left uprising, but all those who share that common understanding.
The only picture I can muster is that a time will come to hash through ideas for the future that would include a more horizontal form of democracy, just economics and business models, and a host of new and/or revamped old ways to feed ourselves, find better energy sources…all that, but never need to label the origins of the ideas as Left or Conservative. If they’re good, imo, they should win in the war of ideas, with statesman speaking for them in all sorts of policy areas.
But jayzus; rebuilding will take such effort and dedication, won’t it? So nice that there are so many GA’s working on so many solutions already.
Dunno if I’ll vote for Alexander; I’ve been pretty ambivalent about him in video presentations, but I’ll vote third party with an eye toward the future, and mainly support the democracy movement.
Thanks, gaza; it’s not at all familiar, but zounds: what dedication four hours is! I will sure try to at least start it; sounds interesting.
“Tits up” was the only portion I enjoyed. Oh, the disillusionment!
My family were mainly members or supporters of the Western Federation of Miners and the IWW, which later became the Mine/Mill union and later merged with the Steelworkers.
I think our victory in the US will be easier than expected because they’ve bottled up all the outlets so when the explosion, the social break, comes along the change from radicalization to revolution will be sudden and overwhelming.
The hardest problem with rebuilding will be facing what is now a lost battle to save the environment.
I wouldn’t vote for anyone who compromises with the .01% to any degree. The historical experience is that they won’t stop compromising.
Wendy, I guess watch the first 5 minutes of part four for a broad summary of the previous 3 hours, and an intro to Part 4, which is about Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, and applies to W Bush and Obama as well.
In previous episodes, Freud’s nephew Bernay’s led the propaganda effort during WW1, saying it was all about freedom of course. Then he taught big business how to turn thoughtful, community minded citizens into selfish, shallow, conformist consumers.
Then these same forces prodded along the Boomer kids into being hedonistic “Me generation” hippies. When the backlash came and the kids started organizing against war and materialism, being a hippie then became uncool in the media, and the boomer kids were groomed into future Regan voters. Literally. Regan was all about personal responsibility, getting government off your back, and not worrying about the less fortunate. This played right into what the marketers had been programming Americans to embrace for decades.

Worth watching the first 5 minutes
side notes, my opinions, but I think the whole diversity emphasis and diversification of US and European communities has been a program by the Powers to weaken community and community action against the 1%.
There are pograms going on in Israel right now against African holocaust refugees, and it doesn’t even get mentioned in the press. If any other group was resisting diversification, they would be shamed in our media.
I’m still learning about the right wing in France, but it sounds like Le Penn has some pretty reasonable points about resisting the program to make France a lot less French, and to resist the Euro and globalization anyway. She said that globalization is the idea of having slaves in other countries make things to sell to unemployed people here.
Civic responsibility is a big threat to the occupying powers, so they try to groom us into mindless, narcissistic sociopaths.
Hence, jobs report bad for Obama.
I’m starting to think there’s nothing wrong with strong communities and pride in the group, even if ethnicity or heritage is what holds those communities together.
It’s good enough for the Jewish international community, and they seem to be doing pretty darn well for themselves, looking after their own.
LOL! You may just have convinced me to vote for Alexander, Bill. It really is a fair point you make.
Great family roots legacy; you must have loved the Billy Bragg video above. No other workers were more fucked over by Plutocrats than miners, and no other group was punished so thoroughly and cravenly than miners organizing to fight back. My guess is you’ve developed a pretty damned strong character, dear.
Please do say more about what you mean here, esp the bold?
“…because they’ve bottled up all the outlets so when the explosion, the social break, comes along the change from radicalization to revolution will be sudden and overwhelming.
Sorry to be in and out, but Sunday’s a big chore day for me, and I have another more humorous diary up (blog whore by mistake…)
Oh, I thought this was supposed to be the funny one . . . :-(
‘Supposed to be’; well, never know where comments go, but one the day before…what…oh, at the bottom: the Facebook cuts costs for CIA sure was hilarious. Yes, the Euroboys have been such a ___ influence on me!
But no: today you’re the funny one. But please make sure Obey throws me offa that post, okay? But he’ll have to host…
It’s bad for my brother who’s long-term jobless and get real if you think that plays no role in divorce stats.
Good grief, I’m so sorry to hear that, and of course it can strain a marriage so harshly. And jobless who lose their houses with no help from any of the crap programs like HAMP which were pretty much designed to only help the people…who didn’t need much help.
My best heart energy and thoughts of better fortune for him and his family, sweetie.
Thank you! And thanks for the cute pony on your myfdl homepage.
Yves Smith always has an animal ‘antidote of the day’ photo or video up; I confess I jacked it from her. I thinks it’s a miniature burro, and it looks so dear snugged up to the daffodils.
Your bro’s situation made me think of the long video I watch a year or more ago in which Liz Warren was giving an in-depth talk about the horrors of debt and foreclosure. She said that interviews had shown that so many of those in foreclosure were so ashamed, that they most often never told friends and family it was happening. Therefore: no means of emotional support, or even possible offers of financial support.
I know in this society we don’t talk intimately to one another often, but it’s a terrible pity that we don’t. Might put shrinks outta business. Nice of you to friend me; hope it’s okay, but I haven’t done all that. But I do like your posts, even when I just stealth rec them, and have used a couple of your quotes in my diaries. ;o)
My best, and love,
wd
Thanks, gaza; these threads start confusing me; can’t get used to the un-nested comment streams.
Will do. ;o)
Hey Wendy,
“I know in this society we don’t talk intimately to one another often, but it’s a terrible pity that we don’t. Might put shrinks outta business.”

They’ve turned us into selfish happiness seeking machines that are never happy. IDEAL consumers, ideal political cattle for the 2 party dictatorship.

When the anger builds to a boil, whites, blacks, Hispanics, will be turned against each other by our Media/CIA/Mossad information control cabal.
From a supposedly fraudulent text I will refrain from naming, written at the turn of the last century:
Whether the text is authentic or not, when the public snaps, they may not care very much whether the targets of their rage are actually responsible for their plight.
Kinda like how cops get pressured to arrest anybody after a grizzly murder infuriates a community, or how small asian shopkeepers in LA were targeted in the LA riots in “retaliation” for the Rodney King verdict.
The moment the public snaps is the moment they will be least rational. Kinda like how the US public didn’t really care if Iraq had something to do with 9/11, they just wanted somebody to pay.
Our media cabal will create scapegoats, and mafiosos like Tom Friedman will tell the new scapegoats to “suck. on. this.”

The masses, contented with some blood, will go back to watching Adam Sandler movies from the FEMA trailer parks.
All this number talk has got me to remembering when I use to read dream rants from ye ole WD.
Don’t ever forget about that other side that is silently awaiting your wave to rush over….your silence within.
Glad to see so many comments and the truth be told, yet again.
End of the Road documentary, interviews by a few CEOs and the author who covered Jekeyll Island…..first 15 are a must….

All in all, have an understanding that the people in the know, who can change this world, will when they are asked. The waiting is the hard part, but believe me, there are many WDs out there, the more the merrier, and the fact that we are talking about this, is further proof that there are more out there….waiting….and we will know when.
All the love to you WD, what are you dreaming these days?!?!
Shoot, chebetts; the mystic comes unbidden. It also comes often with some pretty unwelcome mental and physical symptoms, and those I haven’t been missing. ;o)
But really, all the voices are part of me, the posts choose themselves.
I’m not remembering all my dreams, often just stills, but often there are children in them. No big surprise, as the children are active in both the personal and global spheres of my awareness.
Heh. During the few days I spent on The Children of Fallujah, I dreamt of spiders, and again, no surprise, as they represent some pretty malign forces. One night I managed to kill one in a tissue, and awoke glad as hell of it. ;o)
To me, this seems to be another time of waiting, as though we can feel and smell a tempest brewing, with no knowledge of what’s at the center.
We’re starting to get smoke from the Gila fire in SW New Mexico, and when I woke from a nap a bit ago, the winds were high, the skies dark, almost like a solar eclipse. Not from clouds, so I couldn’t understand it. It’s not as apparent now, but it did make my antennae quiver a bit. ;o)
I’ll try to watch the video when I have time, dear, and meanwhile I promise I’ll try to be a more conscious ws.
love to you and your family,
wd
Yes, children. I dream of children.
Is that excerpt from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion?
Thank you Wendy! Times are changing a bit for me, and, who knows, maybe in a couple of years I’ll lift my veil of as-strict-as-possible anonymity.
(wendydavis grins)
By my reckoning, there is no real way to be anonymous from the security state, though I understand people fearing for their jobs if their political/social opinions were brought to light. And that degree of anonymity might still be useful.
2014:’Fairleft Unmasks’, lol!
Dunno what it is, guess I didn’t want to. Plus it’s not altogether polite, imo, to paste so much into a comment stream.
