It’s likely they need no introduction or explanations of their proven credibility as dedicated and brave journalists. If you seriously can’t afford to take the twenty-nine minutes to watch, here is a very abbreviated version.
On Feb. 3 at The Guardian, Naomi Wolf published ‘JSOC: Obama’s Secret Assassins’. She writes that ‘The President has a clandestine network targeting a ‘kill list’ justified by secret laws. How is that different than a death squad?’ She praises ‘Dirty Wars’, and calls the shadow CIA/JSOC/mercenary armies operating with impunity and virtually no accountability ‘the biggest story in our nation’s contemporary history.
From the Guardian:
US news organisations are facing accusations of complicity after it emerged that they bowed to pressure from the Obama administration not to disclose the existence of a secret drone base in Saudi Arabia despite knowing about it for a year.
Glen Ford at Black Agenda Report ‘Fleets of Drones Descend on Africa’ lists far more drone bases on the continent than I’d known.
In the very heart of the African continent, the 17,000-man United Nations peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Congo wants to use U.S. drones to monitor armed groups in the region, where U.S. Special Forces are also operating. Those drones would be deployed under much the same UN Security Council language that NATO used to launch its war against Libya, in 2011, allowing “all necessary measures…to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack.”
At the same time, another section of the United Nations is about to launch an investigation into the legality of U.S. drone warfare in Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan. Thus, it is possible that the United Nations Security Council could wind up calling in American drones to attack people in the Congo region, while the U.N.’s special rapporteur for human rights and counterterrorism is investigating whether U.S. drone warfare violates international law.
How ironic.
And of course, now that President Obomba has felt a bit of heat from Ron Wyden and ten other Senators generated by his ‘white paper memo’, the White House says it will ‘share’ classified information to members of the Senate and House Intelligence committees as to his Office of Legal Counsel’s ‘interpretation of federal law that are binding on all executive branch agencies’. Obomba doesn’t say ‘all of the legal twistings’ will be shown to them, however.
Oy; in reaction to the fairly strong kerfuffle generated by the ‘white paper’, according to AP:
Earlier Wednesday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama was engaged in an internal process deliberation to determine how to balance the nation’s security needs with its values (sic). He said Obama was committed to providing more information to Congress, even as he refused to acknowledge whether the drone memo even existed.
Diane Feinstein’s apparently giddy as a schoolgirl about the news, but Holy Gatekeepers, Batman! Bring on the Next Senate Dog and Pony Show! Feinstein has announced that no one will be allowed to testify against John Brennan at his Senate confirmation hearing today: he’ll be the only witness. In reaction, Bruce Fein and Ralph Nader penned a letter to her. From Corporate Crime Reporter:
“Brennan is unfit for office because he’s the brainchild behind unconstitutional and secret predator drone killings — both targeted and signature — in violation of due process,” Fein told Corporate Crime Reporter.
“What he’s doing is more egregious in the eyes of the law than the CIA assassination attempts revealed in Church hearings — Castro, Lumumba, Trujillo — that provoked an executive order prohibiting CIA assassinations,” Fein said.
“In secret organizations like the CIA, leaders unflaggingly devoted to the rule of law are urgently needed because customary checks and balances are at their low water mark. Brennan cannot be trusted to adhere to rule of law.”
So naturally Our Emperor would triple down on Bush’s UE and nominate Brennan to head the CIA.
(C-span will broadcast Brennan’s hearing at 2:30 EST. ‘Several committee members are vowing to ask Brennan “tough questions” including questions on the use of American drones overseas and the Obama administration’s drone strike program.’)
Please get this story out. That ‘Dirty Wars’ may be in some theaters soon is monumental; when it’s available for sale or rent…spread it around. We have to stop this if we can. And we can, if there is the will do it.
Every single empire, in its official discourse, has said that it is not like all the others, that its circumstances are special, that it has a mission to enlighten, civilize, bring order and democracy, and that it has a mission to enlighten, civilize, bring order and democracy, and that it uses force only as a last resort.
~ Edward Said

Rowley, “There were thirty thousand other nights raids in Afghanistan…and we know nothing about them.”
a mobias quip:
We’re the good guys
Murdering people…
like us?
no, not like us.
they murder people
like us
because we’re good
which side are you on?
the good side
where we murder people
because we’re afraid
of the bad people
who murder people
like us
rec’d Wendy
Thank you hotdog; all rec’s will go to Scahill and Crowley (and Amy). Not to mention Anthony Freda.
My guess is that you wrote the mobias (mobius?) poem. So easy to picture the twists as we read, very nicely crafted, my friend.
Q: I assume that we might be able to make the longitudinal (?) scissor cut that will cause the strip to become two hoops…two circles…?
Rec’d. Glad the scope of the discussion is beginning to expand. When Jon Stewart’s on your case, you better backpedal. Now the task is persistence because the media and the CIA/DoD/WH propaganda machine is going to want to change the subject quickly. This story, like the Watergate breakin, must not go away. There was a lot of effort from the alternative newspapers that keep the Watergate story alive enough until a couple of young ambitious WaPo reporters saw a career-booster. You saw a glimmer of that career-boosting gleam in the eyes of the folks in the SpinCycle clip that CTuttle put up a couple of nights ago.
Thanks for keeping this story going. IMO it’s a good lever to use right now. Most people are not buying the “senior al Qua’ida commander” story especially after they read how many drone attacks have been used. The old vets who think they know what is going on still trot out the “we’re responding to IEDs in a war theater” rationale–and it’s hard to shake them out of the self-defense nonsense. Most of my Obama-supporting friends are in the Jon Stewart camp; most of my righty friends have not commented on this. They’re still running with the “Obama’s gonna take away your guns” meme.
Guess I won’t have any other thoughts until after the dog show (DiFi ain’t allowing no ponies). SSCI has a (one?) memo. Now the rest of Congress must pressure to see the memos. Blumenthal thinks he should see them (folks from his state, call him up and encourage him.) And he’s not on the SSCI.
Didn’t know Jon Stewart was playing the story, but no, I couldn’t get those videos. MSNBC is too heavy for my laptop, especially later in the day, so I’ll just take your word for it.
This film could be a game-changer for waking up the sleeping public. Glenn Greenwald keep asking: ‘What’s it gonna take for Americans to get on the streets again?’
I’m glad you’ll watch The Show; I’m gonna wait for the Libretto…
Arise! ;~)
Added: just saw the Stewart vid on Kevin’s piece. I swear it wasn’t there earlier. Mainly I could hear it, frozen images. A couple years ago friends kept telling me that Jon was down with torture. I dunno.
…May 2nd, 2011, the night Bin Ladin was assassinated, that same night…
Just adding the story we all go to your quote above from Mr. Rowley.
Thank you, wendydavis for this excellent preparation for the hearings, along with all who have provided the background information here for public enlightenment. I noted in particular the excellent description in your video clip of what has been happening in Yemen – my daughter was there years back on a medical mission and had a wonderful experience with charming hospital connected families. She even went out into the desert to see the ruins of the palace of the Queen of Sheba under excavation, so I was particularly struck by Mr. Scahill’s remark that ‘rolling around with security would actually make it more dangerous for us.’
My daughter rolled around the desert with security, took photos of the lovely little kids and beautiful old buildings. This stuff breaks my heart.
Recommended.
Got my notepad ready, wendydavis.
The unmanned aircraft (drones) fire the Hellfire missile as seen here. If they can that to a tank, imagine what they can do to a house.
From the Guardian:
Glenn Greenwald ✔ @ggreenwald
The Nobel Peace Prize Committee should frame a copy of the DOJ assassination white paper and then hang it on its wall. #DroneLaureate
Brennan’s been on C-span extolling the virtues of his/their program ahead of the hearing.
It’s crushing, juliania; I watched a few other videos this morning that left me (again) sick at what we’re foisting upon the world. Death, destruction, diaspora, starvation and disease. We have to stop them.
Thanks for telling about your daughter’s being in Yemen. I forget how long Scahill reported from there recently. A year?
I keep looking on the front page to see if they’ll live blog the hearings; I’d figured Kevin would. I haven’t a clue how to embed c-span, or I put it up for folks to comment on…
And so frequently do.
Thanks, donbacon. Hard that I can imagine a few folks who should by all rights be in the tank. Oopsie; One Love. Shhhhh.
Heh. the Guardian:
Obomba apparently asked for it back, but said they didn’t bring it down…it failed. Okay.
Kevin commented @12 DSWright will probably be liveblogging or posting regular updates.
And so he is; I just checked and found it. Thank you, marym in IL. Hope you can keep your breakfast down. ;D
I see they’ve gotten off to a
greattypically disgraceful start. You probably missed this photo at the one Guardian link. I’ll try not to mention how badly I want to wipe that smirk off her face. (oopsie)
Was there any indication as to the identities of the protesters? At least Code Pink; Medea had ten good questions they should ask Brennan.
Sounds like there were more protesters still in the room, and now their clearing codepink.
Thanks, wendy. Praying this is some sort of tipping point. Will go no to check on the hearing reporting, however, I expect NOTHING helpful from Senator Feinstein. She and Pelosi bot knew about the torture from the beginning. They had to study the matter for YEARS and then prepare reports for YEARS. Brennan’s lies about being humane and killing fewer than thought remind me of the lie that only 2 or 3 detainees were water boarded 2 or 3 times. We know the pattern from both ends now. We have studied all this for years and worse than our worst fears are where the truth is now found. I believe the worst and more all the time now. I am a rational woman.
I can’t wait to see the whole movie. Maybe this is a tipping point or maybe there will be some false flag event to scare us all back into submission so we stop asking inconvenient questions. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this statement from the FDL live blog:
Another superb diary wd … recommended
So much of what these warmongers/warmonsters/warcriminals have to say or want to claim is “humane” and “dramatically reduces the danger to innocent civilians” or severe circles of harm /danger/death and innocents/children being killed took place/happened “despite our best effort(s)” flunks this test –
>>> How would they like it being done to them?
>>> How would Barack Obama and Michelle like it being done to them and their family? Would they view it as being humane and understand it was done with great care and precision?
>>> How would John Brennan like it being done to him and his family? Would John be so sanquine about the intention(s) to implement best efforts were it being done to him and his family?
>>> How would Senator Diane Feintstein like it being done to her?
I sincerely doubt any of the these examples were to actually take place / happen would be given the benefit of the doubt as to what was being done and how. Yet this is what Obama WH and American Empire are claiming to be good, solid ethical and legal policies. It all flunks the most basic of tests — would they accept and tolerate it being done to them? Not be driven to deep despair and feelings of loss and anger? All this based on notion they were still alive after Killer Drone flew over, fired the weapon and showed via video what followed.Dead is dead.
Of course at this point in 2013 American Empire is largely the sole inflicter of unlimited Killer Drone Attacks on whoever American Empire deigns to inflict it on.
It is factually correct and realistic to state that at some point it will not be only American Empire conducting Killer Drone Attacks. Then all this case policy and sense of “what is ethical and lawful” as being peddled by Obama WH and American Empire is going to come crashing down and American Empire will look absolutely hypocritical ( as it so often does ) getting and being all indignant about and doing the Kabuki Show ” how dare they attack us?!” junk.
Now *that video* I’ll watch, marym in IL. Last hearing Medea was torn out of bodily, with her clinging hand and foot to fight her extradition…was seriously awesome.
Welcome, and moi aussi, reader. Just a post by way of a PSA, really.
Yeah, the Gang of Eight has known so much for so many years…and either tacitly approved or actively supported. Assholes. I used to pour over Congressional reports on ‘Contract forces’, etc. for posts, and would find so much damning stuff…but after awhile ya get to know that Congressional Reports are where the Truth goes to die.
As is so with many others, drones haunt me, and mercenaries twine with CIA and Special Forces…speak to me of fascism and inverted totalitarianism.
… imagine that … The Red Queen Doing What Red Queens Do
” Clear this room of these rabble — this is My Room — off with them!”
What the hell? Do Americans think this really is a Democracy?
Senator Feinstein is not going to have American Empire questioned or mocked. Such reveals of what and who is behind the curtain tell much.
ROTFLMAO! Did the liveblogger get the double negative right…or wrong.
Either way it’s too funny. Grin, DiFi, Grin.
Wouldn’t it be great if they release it on DVD soon, and discount the hell outta it? Stocking Stuffers is what I’m thinking.
Great questions, arrow. And of course they or their families would want revenge, and might just join a group…yada, yada. Their sociopathic narcissism means that they can’t even imagine that those they murder are even fellow human beings, much less worthy of life or due process.
Drone orders at the defense industry’s largest and finest have been backed up for years. The one Guardian link about Iran releasing the video footage spoke of them becoming drone armed soon. Why not?
The short response I could make to your long comment to THD on my Afrcom post was going to be a distillation (I hope) to much of what you said:
We everyday Americans have almost no recourse against most of the perfidious wrongs done to us every day now, and it will arguably get worse. Solidarity and community will soon be crucial to surviving it. It’s hard to know that a not insignificant number of people at this site still can’t comprehend it.
You take care too, amigo.
Gonna go get some rest; see you soon.
FWIW, Jim White at emptywheel debunks the idea that Iran has succeeded in decoding the data.
Argument goes to picture quality for a drone that is known to deliver very high resolution images. (1) Iran has not decoded the pictures or (2) Iran is holding on to the good pictures.
There were initially some reports that Iran had hacked the drone control in order to divert it. I’m not sure if those reports every were validated.
Thanks for the information. More feints, I guess. I was wrong, though: Iran is claiming that *it’s* developing 20 different drone types.
I heard some of Brennan’s blather. He said drones are used “only as a last resort” quite a bit. Some Administration spokescritter said it was “understandable” that people would be “concerned” about the use of drones to, you know, take out people.
IOW, we understand your concerns. Now STFU or we’ll send a drone up your ass. Traitor.
Jay Carney had said yesterday that the assassination program is ‘safe, wise, and legal’. Three Bags Full o’ Wrong.
Yeah, I almost used this quote, but it wasn’t quite targeted enough, though it fit for the lot of them executing the program, including the paramilitary forces in the ‘Dirty Wars’ film:
No doubt Iran is developing drones. I bet Vanuatu and Academi and Halliburton and WalMart are developing drones or thinking of applications of drones. According to one of my online friends, the optics and communications on US military drones are complex, expensive, closely held (by a contractor) and difficult to reverse engineer. I’m doubtful, but Iran is a good test case to watch.
And joy of joys, there is a Second Amendment group in Texas who has developed 3-D printed guns and gun parts. Moreover they’ve testfired one of the guns that they printed. So our grandchildren can look forward to open source weaponry in which the designs are downloaded from the internet (or created in CAD tools) and by using multimaterial printing, a complex weapon is extruded in one pass. No assembly required. Ain’t that just peachy.
Reverse engineering would seem difficult, but I dunno anything about it. As I remember, many ‘defense’ are making them, but…I have looked into it recently.
I’ve only scanned pieces about 3-d printing, so this one isn’t quite what I’d recollected, but I thought I remembered there were some difficulties in doing it at home. Surprised to hear they’ve perfected it. But do google ‘aeronautics’ and ’3-D printing’. I’ve seen headlines, but blew past them as beyond my ken.
It’s gettin’ weird out there, there’s no doubt about it. Those teensy ones the Brits ‘r usin’ in Afghanistan (sending intel to their notebooks) seemed to be the ‘battlefield’ wave of the future. Good grief.
The comments about kids and homes lead me to believe that there will be a lot of Darwin Awards resulting from the first introduction of this idea among the Second Amendment fetishists and clueless parents of mischievous kids. Parents will look back fondly to the days they worried their kids were looking at porn.
We have a huge culture issue to deal with. There is an interesting tweet conversation going on between Dicey Troop and Richie Machado of Occupy Wall Street about the dangers of power and how to deal with those dangers. A sort of “power co-opts”; “absolute power co-opts you to power absolutely” sort of discussion. A personal is political comment from Machado:
There’s some resurrected Yippie philosophy in there.
I apologize, THD; it seems I just hit the wall past the point of being able to comprehend what I’m reading.
I did muse once again that the only thing that will decrease the need for arms and associated power is a true spiritual revolution that I hope and (atheistically) pray is beginning. We may be one of the last societies to feel it, but…nonetheless.
If I can manage it yet this evening, I’ll peek in again. ;~)
See the report “Untold myths of the underwear bomber” appeared Sept. 2012 on tv news WXYZ Detroit.
interview with FBI agents Peisig and Mcdonald who interrogated Abdulmuttalab and traveled to nigeria for investigation. These agents were awarded DOJ medal for their service in the prosecution of Abdulmuttulab.
These FBI agents provide statements which materially revise and oontradict the facts originally provided the public on X-Mas day bomber and make statements not consistent with critical information provided in Abdulmuttulab’s Federal trial.
The F.B.I.s own agents have destroyed their own credibility on Abdulmuttalab.
If F.B.I. info was relied upon for Obama decision to green light drone kill of U.S. citizen anwar al-awlaki -
then president obama needs to go up for impeachment vote today.
So many lies; the many discoveries of Scahill and Crowley were revelatory as to specifics, but hardly shocking.
The lies about Raymond Davies: the same.
Dave Lindorff (thiscantbehappening.net) has a piece up on the reasons Obomba should be impeached…but won’t be.
