In 2000 Volusia County, Fl. played an important role in the neoliberalization of America. While there are many on the so-called “left” who would have you believe that George W. Bush took office because of Ralph Nader, the fact is, the fix was in, the dice were loaded, and the financial and corporate elites who run this country were going to get the 3rd World America they had been planning on for decades. The tool of choice then, just as it is now, is the direct response electronic (DRE) voting machine and it’s sister in crime, the optical scan voting machine. Both are ultimately tabulated via computer and a proprietary software system that is kept secret by law.
“DELAND, Fla., Nov. 11 – Something very strange happened on election night to Deborah Tannenbaum, a Democratic Party official in Volusia County. At 10 p.m., she called the county elections department and learned that Al Gore was leading George W. Bush 83,000 votes to 62,000. But when she checked the county’s Web site for an update half an hour later, she found a startling development: Gore’s count had dropped by 16,000 votes, while an obscure Socialist candidate had picked up 10,000–all because of a single precinct with only 600 voters.” – Washington Post Sunday , November 12, 2000 ; Page A22
In the above report ( click for full version), written days after the election, hotshot Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank goes on to attribute the strange 16,022 negative vote tally from Volusia’s precinct 216 to an apparently innocent cause. “…. faulty ‘memory cards’ in the machines caused the 16,000-vote disappearance on election night. The glitch was soon fixed,” he wrote. A. Thompson
In 2005, after Bev Harris and BlackBoxVoting.org had already run several successful tests demonstrating how electronic voting machines could be hacked, she got a man by the name of Harri Hursti to assist her and her team in demonstrating that all they needed to hack an election was the memory card used to store the actual votes. The memory card is supposed to be a blank slate but Hursti found a sub-routine on them and determined that they were the most likely way to hack an election at the time. He proved his point. A test was set up and filmed for the final segment of Harris’ Hacking Democracy (a film any politically aware American should watch). The test was simple: take an actual electronic voting machine, set it up for a simple “election”, put in a certain number of votes pre-determined and video recorded as they were cast, and see if the memory card hack that Hursti created works. It did. All Hursti touched was the memory card, he never had access to the machine itself and this is was the outcome…

In 2002 the Bush Administration helped push through the Orwellian named Help America Vote Act which promised to “fix” the problem of the punch-card system of voting (hanging chads.. remember that joke?) by having the federal government mandate all states use the electronic voting machines. It was a payoff to the electronic voting machines companies for helping to steal the 2000 elections and it was a guarantee of future control. Interestingly, if you read the text of the HAVA or if you go to the official government website or even Wikipedia there is one thing you won’t find in any of them… the names of the people who wrote it or submitted it for votes. Obviously no one wanted to go down in history as the congressman who killed democracy in America.
In Dec. of 2008, Mike Connell died in a plane crash along with his family. In July of 2008, the lead attorney in the King Lincoln Bronzeville Neighborhood Association v. Blackwell case sent a letter to Michael Mukasey requested protection for his key witness in an investigation of electronic vote hacking in the 2004 presidential election. Mike Connell was that witness.
We have been confidentially informed by a source we believe to be credible that Karl Rove has threatened Michael Connell, a principal witness we have identified in our King Lincoln case in federal court in Columbus, Ohio, that if he does not agree to “take the fall” for election fraud in Ohio, his wife Heather will be prosecuted for supposed lobby law violations. Ohio News
Mike Connell was ”a long-time GOP operative, had provided web services for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s 2004 reelection campaign, and had also had provided IT services to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Republican National Committee and many Republican candidates, in addition to creating Ohio’s official, real-time state election website“. SourceWatch
In 2004 and in 2006, Mike Connell’s company, SmartTec, served as a kind of “hub” for election night vote tabulations. In effect they compiled all the votes and sent them to be officially recorded; it was a “man in the middle” scam. Raw Story picked up on this as well during the missing White House emails scandal. Ohio was one of the last, if not THE LAST state to report in on election night 2004. Discrepancies in the numbers were reported from all over the state of Ohio and voting problems were being reported that night, yet John Kerry, after having promised to ensure the vote was honest after the debacle of 2000, conceded the election in record time – thus preventing any official investigation. Of course Kerry married into one of the elite families in America and it certainly wouldn’t do for him to upset the apple cart so to speak.
The lesson the neoliberals learned in 2000, 2004, and 2006 was that if they are going to be able to use their magical electronic voting machine tool to steal democracy from the people, what they had to do was use it in such a way as to control who won the primaries and thus they could control who won the elections. Case in point, 2008. In early 2008 John McCain was running dead last in the primaries but then all of a sudden, with almost no money and right after a scandal involving one of his chair people, McCain staged a dramatic turn-around and secured the nomination in near record time. The fix was in; the neoliberal party needed a democrat in the White House to validate all the corruption that had occurred during the Bush/Cheney years and so they took the least viable republican candidate and flipped the electronic voting machine tallies so that he became the offering to run against Obama. McCain then ran around with Joe Liebermann whispering in his ear while Liebermann was hated by the republicans, and McCain picked an idiot of a vice-presidential candidate.
All of these things the McCain camp had done people wondered about at the time. They said it was stupid and it was bad choices and bad campaign decisions all around. But it wasn’t. It was by design. And the whole thing was set up during the primaries with the electronic voting machines. Of course, in the general election they didn’t need to hack the presidential race numbers because they had already controlled the outcome by controlling the narrative of the script. The neoliberal choice won, Barack Obama, and he immediately started on a course that had many “progressives” baffled. Well, it makes perfect sense if you understand how he got to where he is.
Fast forward to South Carolina 2010…
South Carolina, thanks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and their Help America Vote Act, is 100% electronic voting machines. Even the absentee ballots are run on the optical scan system.
All 46 South Carolina counties use direct recording electronic voting machines. The voter makes his/her selections by pressing a button beside a party, candidate or issue displayed on the direct recording electronic (DRE) voting machine. After all selections have been made, the voter presses a VOTE button to cast his/her ballot. Vote South Carolina
Serious problems are arising in early investigations into the numbers from the Alvin Greene vs. Vic Rawls race. Remember, Vic Rawls is a democrat, but he is a populist democrat meaning he is opposed to NAFTA, neoliberal economic policies, bailouts, and attacking the social safety net that is all the rage right now in the DLC / Clinton “New Dems” neoliberal congress and White House. However, Jim DeMint is a big-time supporter of the neoliberalization of America and has been serving big business for many years as a loyal neoliberal servant in the Senate.
In order to ensure that the Chamber of Commerce and the rest of the Neoliberal Party get the candidate they want and avoid messy debates with Vic Rawls that could breach topics the elites don’t want discussed in public, Vic Rawls was weeded out of the picture by hacking the electronic voting machines during the primary and a paid loser, Alvin Greene, stepped up to the plate to “win” the nomination and then go on to make a complete fool of himself prior to the general election, ensuring Jim DeMint keeps his seat in the senate.
One potential red flag: A significant difference between the results of absentee and election day ballots….“The election day ballots all favor Mr. Greene. We don’t know what it means,” Ludwig said in an interview. “We did significantly better on absentees than Election Day, which is according to the mathematicians, quite significant. The other reason is, it didn’t happen in any other races on the ballot.”
In Spartanburg County, Ludwig said there are 25 precincts in which Greene received more votes than were actually cast and 50 other precincts where votes appeared to be missing from the final count.
“In only two of 88 precincts, do the number of votes Greene got plus the number we got equal the total cast,” Ludwig said.
Greene also racked up a 75 percent or greater margin in one-seventh of all precincts statewide, a mark that Ludwig notes is even difficult for an incumbent to reach. Politico
The hack was set and the game was rigged. A real populist candidate was nudged out of the political arena in favor of a pro-corporate neoliberal sell-out like Jim DeMint.
The problem is going to be that the Chamber of Commerce is going to eventually step-up and get some local area businessman to come forward and claim he paid Alvin Greene’s filing fee and the investigation will ultimately boil down to people looking in the wrong direction.
They will continue to promote the false “left/right” narrative while people like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow hypothesis that the republicans set this all in motion to keep DeMint in power.
It’s a lie.
The Neoliberal Party as represented now by the Rahm Emanuels and the Hillary Clintons in the White House as well as the majority power structure in congress like Pelosi and Reed, have conspired to keep pro-business corrupt cronies littered in our political structure. Just look at what the White House did to help one of their own Blanche Lincoln.
This is how they work. You will also notice that the left blogosphere will avoid this issue as much as possible. Many of the leaders of the so-called “liberal blogs” are nothing more than servants to the neoliberal power structure in that they furiously advocate certain “safe” topics while actively discouraging more taboo ones. Daily Kos is a fine example of this and Think Progress is actually a focus group website designed and run by a former and current advisor to the neoliberal Clintons from their corporate friendly think-tank The Center for American Progress (Podesta).
This topic won’t be handled much in the liberal blogs except maybe to implicate the evil republicans as some kind of “get out the vote” motivational propaganda. But the fact is, the vote doesn’t matter as long as we allow the elites in this country and their servants in politics and the PR firms to control the narrative and use the electronic voting machines against us.
Alvin Greene is just the latest example and his behavior since coming into the spotlight just makes it more obvious. We had better start talking about this issue and we had better get angry about it.
All we have in this country to hold our representatives accountable is the vote yet more and more those same representatives, though paying lipservice to our collective wishes, are voting on key issues in ways completely contradictory to the wishes of the vast majority of American. Look at the FISA Bill and the TARP Bill and the GM Bailout Bill and the Stimulus Package and the Insurance Bailout / mandatory Coverage Bill…. all of these things, even after very expensive PR campaigns (which you paid for by the way) were opposed by the majority of the population… yet they passed anyway. Why is that?
The answer is simple; your vote doesn’t count anymore. The only thing that counts is service to the corporate industries and the banks that rule over us all. They don’t need to serve you, they just have to LOOK like they care about your wishes… they have to campaign and go through the motions, but in the end it’s their service to the Neoliberal Party that matters.
This is becoming a farce ladies and gentlemen with us in the role of the Stupid slave – servus stultus.

This is a bit too much of a conspiracy theory for me to believe, mostly because Rawls was a long shot candidate anyway, even if he did win the nomination.
What part of that is “conspiracy theory”?
the proven memory card hack verified by UC Berkeley?
perhaps it was the investigation into Mike Connell and the 2004 rigged elections?
Maybe the proven discrepencies that are already begining to show up in the South Carolina primaries?
There is already a very strong anti-encumbant atmosphere growing in America right now. DeMint is obviously part of the crony system and Rawls planned his campaign around addressing that issue directly. Now those commercials won’t be run, that topic won’t come up in the debates and the lathargic republican community will come out in droves to vote against the idiot from the Democrats.
Look at it in terms of cost management… the republican party and the Neoliberal Party can now save money in this race…
and we don’t find ourselves in another situation like the one with the Lincoln primary where the New Dems and the White House are embarrased for not supporting a progressive candidate….
this is well supported by all the facts. The fact is, some people would rather believe this is “conspiracy theory” because the alternative is quite depressing. I agree, it is depressing.
How about this analysis, plus the lack of motivation – if Rawls wasn’t going to win the general, why take him out like this in the primary?

Read through it and tell me if you’re still so sure it’s the voting machines. Because to me it seems a lot more gray.
Demint isn’t like a peppermint patty, and if anyone belives He isn’t behind this, “your a sick puppy,” as G.Bush Senior would say, to quote A Republican
The people of this Country are so stupid it amazes me.
When I was young, and we had the old voting machines that people went in the curtained both and pulled levers, everybody said there was no way for people to know who you voted for. HEY!
Well every lever was connect to a totalasator, and when a person pulled a lever it added a vote.
When I was old enough to end up working for a very political State entity, I saw people behind the machines marking down who people voted for by watching the little totalasators click.
All of our voting systems are made so they can be crooked, and we are to dumb to relize it.
If You don’t believe that. Then ask Yourself with all of todays technology why we don’t have a Country wide voting system untouched by human hands?
Let me see if I got this… one theory is that since black people put an “E” at the end of the name Greene, it was “code” for “this guy is black”.. that’s one theory listed in this article… but at least they acknowledge that no balck candidate for Senate has won for a 100 years and the fact that Rawls won the absentee ballots (where Greene was still spelled with an “E” on the end) 2 to 1…
and of course the ultimate “conspiracy theory” catch-all debunker.. it would have taken “thousands” of programers to run the scam so it would have been “too big” of a conspiracy to have worked…
the problem with that is three-fold.
One: I just showed you how the memory cards can be used to hack the system and one or two people program the “blank” memory cards.
two: I just showed you that the tabulating computer system is a proven back-door hack
three: the notion that the larger the size of a conspiracy automatically means it can’t happen is not supported by logic or history. Take the run-up to the Iraq War for instance. How many people were involved in the “conspiracy” to promote lies to the American people to justify the war? 1000? 2000? How about the “conspiracy” to demonize Arabs? How about the “conspiracy” to silence the suffering of the Palestinian people? How many people are involved in promoting misinformation and outright lies that end in the suffering and death of tens of thousands of innocent people?
How many people were involved in the CIA secret wars for corporate America over the years? How many people are involved in illegal activities right now that undermine our constitution?
All of these things you KNOW to be true and yet somehow the notion that a few people would conspire to hack an election to make sure those with the “right” ideology stay in power is too much for you to believe?
there is no logic in that. It is a form of double-think… you know these other conspiracies are real and yet certain theories you dismiss off hand because they are “conspiracy theories”.
think about it and check my references as I did yours
now, let me also address the issue of Rawls probably losing in the general election… this comes from a front page FireDogLake story up right now by Jon Walker…
Now what exactly is it that makes you think that DeMint would have been expected to be in the cat-bird seat with a feeling in Washington like this going around?
I think DeMint got scared, and I know that American elections, including the South, have a proud tradition of the party in power running a ‘ringer’ in the opposite party’s primaries. Not sure I buy into the overarching neoliberal conspiracy, but here’s what we do know: DeMint was looking at public polls (perhaps his private polling looked even worse) that showed him at or below fifty percent, not a pretty place for any incumbent in any year, especially this one. Lots of SCarolinians are already mad at incumbent Lindsay Graham (who had a ringer opponent last cycle, iirc) and might have wanted to take their anger out at the incumbent on the ballot.
Do I think the Rockefellers and Clintons were involved, along with Cuban exiles? No, but I do see the possibility that, suddenly, Jim DeMint felt the need for an easy race this fall — he does plan to campaign largely out of state for his tea-party favorites, so he doesn’t need to be tied down at home tending to his own re-election. And here was a police department, probably in friendly hands, with a black man on the hook for a felony: showing porn to a white college co-ed.
Could that police department — which still hasn’t filed charges or indicted Alvin Greene seven months after the incident — have alerted the state party to their prize? Could some state party types have paid Greene’s filing fee after he had claimed indigence to earn a state public defender? Could there be a DeMint scandal ready to pop in the fall that Vic Rawl or his team knows about?
C’mon, Jake, it’s Chinatown.
This set of circumstances will stand up without any need to appeal to larger forces at work in our culture: a potentially endangered incumbent in an anti-incumbent year with larger ambitions and a busy out-of-state fall travel schedule wants a cakewalk. Friends provide the means.
And, finally, won’t a significant proportion of low-information Democratic voters be turned off by the Democratic party establishment removing an African-American primary ‘winner’ from the ballot, come November, only to replace him with Vic Rawl?
Excellent post Willy. We used to laugh at Russians voting under one party rule. Now its us. Even if you still believe in Democrats and Republicans, the vote itself is rigged. Rigged just like the stock market and the justice system. Our political and financial institutions are irredeemable. Our constitution is an exhibit in a museum. Soon our gulf coast and eastern seaboard will be uninhabitable and our money will be worthless.
heh – I could go on.
Since we are totally screwed we might as well have some fun. Lets rally behind Alvin Greene (with an “e”). Lets send Obama’s homey to the senate (that sink hole of corruption and depravity) from South Carolina, the state that started the civil war. A fitting parting gesture to our former republic.
I’d believe the GOP helped out Greene before I’d go for the voting machine theory, that’s for sure.
I think the absentee issue actually helps prove the Free Times theory. Anyone who votes absntee is a motivated and educated voter. They know who Rawls is. But on election day, given that Rawls didn’t push up his name ID, low information voters walking into the booth chose Greene.
To add, I’m not saying voting machines aren’t hackable, just that it doesn’t seem likely here to me.
Also, d-day has more plausible theories other than voting machine conspiracy:
http://news.firedoglake.com/2010/06/11/maybe-alvin-greene-is-just-alvin-greene/
except for the fact that David’s theory is based on the idea that the republicans crossed over…
there is no supporting evidence for that. No robocalls… no mass emails
nothing to show the republicans knew anything more about Greene than the democrats knew. Plus he asserts that Rawls didn’t even run a campaign.
I can’t believe you wrote “Anyone who votes absntee is a motivated and educated voter.”; please say your kidding.
1. Anyone who votes ‘absentee’ )mail in ballot) is subverting the idea of a secret ballot.
2. Most of those I know who do such voting are what I would consider more lazy than motivated and certainly NOT more educated.
3. The lack of a paper trail ‘should’ tell you something about the integrity of elections in SC and Georgia.
4, The ES+S machines used are KNOWN TO BE PIECES OF SHIT that flip votes even when not hacked.
5. Look at who the sponsors of HAVA were and what has occurred since; you are way out of your depth in researching and realizing the fraud associated with electronic voting. Go have a sit down with Brad and get up to speed.
6. As I wrote in a previous ‘willyloman’ diary on this issue:
”
SC uses the ES+S DRE’s without any paper trail and Georgia does as well ,except they use the Diebold machines without a paper trail.
And after ES+S had bought Diebold(now renamed Premier), DOJ stepped in and forced ES+S to sell Premier as not doing so would have reduced ‘competition’ in the electronic voting machine industry.
Of course Germany and Ireland have banned such machines, the German Supreme Court saying “The principle of the public nature of elections, which results from the fundamental decisions of constitutional law in favour of
democracy, the republic and the rule of law prescribes that all
essential steps of an election are subject to the possibility of
public scrutiny unless other constitutional interests justify an
exception. Here, the examination of the voting and of the
ascertainment of the election result attains special significance.
The use of voting machines which electronically record the voters’
votes and electronically ascertain the election result only meets
the constitutional requirements if the essential steps of the
voting and of the ascertainment of the result can be examined
reliably and without any specialist knowledge of the subject.”
But U.S. citizen’s can’t know how their votes are counted because such is a ‘trade secret’, just another example of our corporate rule.
I’ve got nothing to say in favor of electronic voting machines, but your objections make little sense. In order to get an absentee ballot you need to request one, involving finding a form, filling it out, and mailing it in, meaning you’ve got a decent motivation to vote.
Like I said, I believe electronic voting machines are prone to fraud, but I don’t think that’s what happened here.
How about the 100,000 of thousands of people in 2000 and 2004, who got off work, rushed to the polling places, then had to stand in line for hours on end because there were only 2 machines that “were working”? Many of them standing… in the rain.
How motivated were they to vote?
I can’t speak to other States but in CA the Registrar of Voters(or County Clerk) sends out a pre-stamped,pre-addressed sample ballot that allows one to simply check a box and mail it back to become a ‘permanent mail ballot voter’.
There is no ‘form to find’ as a ballot is sent to the person and all they have to do is drop it in a mail box.
And most absentee ballots are sent in quite awhile BEFORE the actual election
AND the Registrars are allowed to start counting such ballots a week before the election.
And this point ‘makes little sense’? “1. Anyone who votes ‘absentee’ )mail in ballot) is subverting the idea of a secret ballot.”
They know from the ballot and registration who is sending in the ballot and who/what they are voting for; simply contrast that with what occurs at a polling place.
BUT it is about MORE than just being a machine (I’ve no problems with electronic machines that have source code available to the public for examination and testing and provide an easily readable paper trail and audit record), it’s the point made by the German Supreme Court.
Just for an experiment Jason, try and get an audit record of the Premier machines GEMS database and figure out what it is recording and when (I have BTW). And that doesn’t even begin to address all of the issues associated with such machines.
That’s not the case in SC.
Like I said, I’m not trying to argue that electronic voting machines aren’t hackable. I’m just asking folks to look at the facts and factors involved in this particular race. No need to drown out the facts to prove a point.
willyloman, Iremember54, Teddy, FWIW, I’m willing to bet you guys are wrong, in the spirit of “No need to suspect conspiracy when incompetence explains it.” I’m with Jason and d-day. I don’t defend the voting machines. I just know from personal experience how often crazy stuff happens in SC. ;-)
The voting machines are a disgrace, but this race is not the one to challenge them on. It’s far easier to believe that in an open primary, Rs voted en masse on the D ticket for the worst candidate.
sure sounds like that’s part of Greene’s “success” – obviously the SC R’s got the word out for this
you might want to believe that… but there is no evidence of it. The republicans didn’t send out any mass emails that mentioned Greene nor did they do any robocalls about him. no mention of him on the republican talk shows or radio shows prior to the election either.
the large number of votes for Greene suggests there was some kind of whisper campaign, I don’t buy that it happened spontaneously. And I’m not surprised that you report no above-the-surface mention of such over the air or in print, thank you for that information.
The White candidate with only 4^% name recognition in South Carolina lost to the Black candidate who is an unknown. You basically had two unrecognizable candidates running for the nomination, and the Black candidate won. White Democrats/Liberals can’t look past their racist tinted views, so Alvin Greene’s win must be a result of voter fraud, machine tampering, name placement on the ballot, or a republican plant(say what?)..The new comer on the ballot beat out the cadidate with party money behind him. It’s called an upset. Shame on Black Democratic leadership for asking Alvin Greene to step down instead of providing him the tools needed to make him a viable candidate.
ah, so we are just all racists? is that the new meme out there in the PR world right now? what about Clyburn? Is he a “self-hating blackman”? Is that really what you PR Tru-Cast shills are reduced to; calling people racist because they look at the facts? that’s pretty pathetic you know
a previous article on this subject got a mention in a Raw Story article…
