Update4: Nagi is One. Cool. Cat. Another picture.
Update3: Met Nagi and Richard’s friend who was taking care of Nagi. What a lovely person. She was moved to emotion sending Nagi off to his new home. I see why she and Richard were friends.
Update2: Landed in Tampa and plan to meet Nagi and his companion at noon. Will try to link pictures.
Update1: About to take off from JFK to Tampa. 3 hour flight.
As many here know, when our friend SouthernDragon passed away, he left behind a houseful of pampered, privileged cats he chatted about every Sunday morning at Caturday. Several of those cats came to SouthernDragon as a last chance home after experiencing difficult conditions previously–homelessness, injury, etc.
OmAli has led the effort to safely relocate all the kitties to a local animal sanctuary for homeless furries and the FDL community joined together to raise the money to pay their way. All have arrived there except one: Nagi.
Nagi (pronounced Nah-GEE, he’s the sleek, confident one on the left) is a 4 year old, 9lb. 9oz. bundle of black fur and love known for his mischievous temperament. His name comes from the Lakota language and means “shadow”, no doubt chosen because of SouthernDragon’s interest in American Indian folklore and such. Hollywood was added by SD’s friend perhaps because he is California bound. SD noted many times on Caturday how Nagi knocked this or that off a shelf, broke a lamp here or a teacup there. I was smitten and fell in love with him from across the country.
Nagi will not be joining the other kitties at the animal sanctuary. Instead, he will be making his way across the United States from SouthernDragon’s old place in St. Petersburg, Florida all the way to California to his new forever home with my family here in the San Fransisco Bay Area. Welcome Nagi!
Thanks to the help of several pups (thanks again everyone), I am flying to Tampa to meet SouthernDragon’s friend who will deliver Nagi to me. Nagi and I will then fly home together, Nagi safely in a carrier in the cabin of the plane tucked in a nice comforting hidey-hole under the seat in front of me.
I’ve promised to blog Nagi’s trip and to add pictures of the trip. Check for updates above.

WooHoo! YSD! Will look for updates.
Excellent, ysd! Looking forward to reading about your and Nagi’s adventure!
Scritches to Hollywood Nagi and warm hugs to you and Nancy. You can probably see my smile all the way from the Tampa airport :)
This is excellent news, YSD. Once an FDL’er; always and FDL’er, Nagi.
Is Nagi going to put in “garden gnome”-like appearances at notable places from time-to-time?
May your travels be safe and your charge calm.
Pictures of Nagi above. I’m the goofy looking chick on the right in the other pic.
Nagi is a darling!
You are the cutest goofy chick in the world, and you look ecstatic. You look as mischievous as Nagi – Mister ysd, look out – you are going to have your hands full with these two :)
Nancy looks lovely, smiling through her tears. Not only is she seeing Nagi off to his new life but friends are getting together with Richard’s brother on the beach this afternoon for a memorial, so it is a really emotional day for her.
Can’t wait for updates about the rest of the trip, and Abner’s reaction to his new little brother *g*
You are the best
as are you!
Oh, ysd, I’ve been thinking about you all day! Dunno how I missed this post earlier.
So, so wonderful that you made it to pick up Nagi, and meet Nancy, and that apparently things are going well. May they continue so for both of you.
Oh, a memorial on the beach. Perfect. Smiling through tears, indeed.
It does sound perfect. There is a balance, isn’t there? Saying goodbye to Richard but at the same time being so happy for the beginning of Nagi and ysd’s new life together.
Hi, Omali! You have mail, btw.
I bet ysd and Hollywood are on the plane now, in radio silence. Wonder what time they’ll get home? They’ll both be tired, no doubt, and have the additional task of introducing Nagi to the new place. Poor guy will probably stay under the bed for a day or three….
This post brings renewed tears but they are tempered with joy for you and for Nagi. Maybe Om can give us an update on the status of the other kitties? I still miss SouthernDragon so. MUCH. But I guess the cats are still wondering what has happened to their world.
Thank you for the post.
I just tuned in and want to add my best to all concerned here. Nice pictures, keeping this window open. Thanks for letting us follow along ysd.
I didn’t realize that the memorial was today until I read Richard’s obit in the local paper that she gave me. Dang, my timing stinks. No wonder she was so weepy. Now I wish I could have taken a later flight and stayed for the memorial.
We’re on our layover in Las Vegas now. Nagi complained a bit on the descent, probably because the pressure change bothered him. Otherwise, Nagi is a better flyer than I am. He was chill. No need for the harness and leash I bought.
Glad he’s holding up well and that you’re holding up as well as can be expected. :)
What time are you due to be home? You must be exhausted. Is there any way for Nagi to have a potty break? Does he just have to wait until you’re leaving the airport? Guess you can’t let him go digging around in the potted plants in the concourse, can you?
I’ll stop by PUYC tomorrow with everything that I know about the kittehs. Think Gabby is actually still at the duplex, but need to check with Nancy if she feels up to talking this evening.
I don’t think that anyone had planned to do it so soon, but evidently Joe and Don decided to get people together while Don was there this weekend. I think it caught Nancy off guard, too.
Thanks Omi,
I don’t think any of us thought this was going to be anything less than at least a bit stressful for Nagi.
Trusting that good deeds will go unpunished in this instance. Looking forward to whatever you bring, tomorrow.
So glad that he is such a cool customer. It would be really tough on ysd (and the other passengers) if he was vocalizing the whole time. Pretty impressive little fellow, he is.
Hope you are having a good evening, see you tomorrow.
Thanks Om and maybe ysd will be able to give us a Nagi update there as well. I’m going to link back to this post of course.
LMAO! I had a German Shepherd that bolted out of his crate as soon as I opened it and made a b-line to the plants outside the building and urinated for what seemed like hours. I just shrugged at a security cop and he just smiled and shrugged back and pointedly looked the other way. Must have been a dog lover.
Sounds good, see you then. Scritches to Neko.
Scritches to everyone’s critters, and good night.
*G*
*G*
*G*. Good for him.
My computer is going crazy, night for real, this time :)
I had a very busy day so just got by to check on what’s up and saw this. Glad to hear you are about home, he is lovely, and you as well, a heart of gold. Thanks for everything.
Ooh, so glad to see an update.Love the comment, he “complained a bit” during the descent. There have been babies “complaining a bit” on descents on the last two flights I’ve been on. *g*
What a trouper Nagi is. Not to mention our yellowsnapdragon. Kudos to you both!
Looking forward to following the rest of your saga together.
Fantastic….Thanks Om and Good Luck, ysd, to the new family. SD is so with us…and I am so glad to have known him and his cat devotion and his wisdom. This feels like our own memorial and/or Reunion. I am so happy for Nagi and the new family. So well launched. Wow. What a great evening and start-of-a-new-thing to celebrate. Cheers. Life renewing itself.
I love your comment, and I think you articulated what we were all feeling but weren’t able to express. Maybe we weren’t even aware of what we were feeling, but we were longing for it, nonetheless. A beginning. A renewal. A reunion. It is a way to move forward, and I thank you for it.
Thank you for such dear words and for all your hard work.
My best. Thanks again. BL
‘snap and OmAli
no words, smilin’ through tears, I so f***ing LOVE y’all
More Nagi updates over at PUAC. Feather toy fun!
Great news, pics and updates, YSD! Thanks!
The feather toy fun pic shows how comfortable he is in his new home; now all he has to do is “train his people.” LOL
Mad, passionate kitteh love coming right back to you :)
They are so adept at that, aren’t they, lol! Must be a survival trait. We’d wring their scrawny little necks for being such tyrants, otherwise!!
